5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-03-26

These two books in one hits a home run...It nails the topic and leaves the reader plenty to ponder and then hopefully to apply to their lives. This book could have huge impacts if applied to your life. The print, though small, is not so small that it can not be read. I would say it's just below average but hardly noticeable.

1 out of 5 stars Margin/Overload bargain?.......2006-04-04

This product is advertised with two titles combined into one book. To accomplish that and package it into a paperback sized book guess what they did ..... they made the font type very small (think legal documents). What I have read is facinating and I want to read the rest but, because of this format it is just too hard to read. It makes you wonder why a professional publisher would make such user-unfriendly product. A book is no good if you can't read it. Do read both titles but definately skip this version!!

4 out of 5 stars A solid collection of essays.......2001-11-16

The most valuable benefit of this book of several essays is its theme: those on the margins of the British Atlantic world. Covering such groups as the Irish, Scots, Canadians, Indians, slaves and planters of the West Indies, these authors explore peoples typically ignored by standard histories of the British American colonies. (Typically, most studies concentrate on the Puritans, Quakers and planters of the Low Country and the Chesapeake.)

      Book Description

Through focusing on the sexual politics that have emerged out of post-apartheid South Africa, Spurlin investigates textual and cultural representations of same-sex desire outside of the Euroamerican axes of queer culture and politics, and considers the ways in which queer cultural productions in southern Africa do not merely intersect with western queer identity politics and cultural representations but also resist them. Imperialism Within the Margins therefore provides an engaged and much-needed critique of the long-present heterosexist biases of postcolonial studies and the western biases of academic queer theory.

              Description:
A great effort has been undertaken to investigate potential geohazards in relation to the development of the Ormen Lange gas field offshore Mid-Norway. The field is located in the scar left after the giant, tsunami-generating Storegga Slide, which occurred roughly 8150 years ago, and the slide risk has consequently received particular focus. The studies have been multi-disciplinary in character, and have involved a number of companies, universities, and research institutions. The results of the project have lead to a significant advance in our understanding of the Storegga Slide in particular, and submarine slope instability in general, and played an important role in the approval of field development by Norwegian authorities. This special issue comprises 26 individual contributions in addition to this representing the wide span of topics addressed in the project, and this introductory paper gives a brief summary of their contents.

Far beneath the earth, a sinister ritual takes place. A corrupt cleric seeks the Eye of Gruumsh, a relic sacred to the hideous god of the orcs. Against him stand a scullery maid, a paladin, a priest of the god Pelor, and a half-orc barbarian.

                  Will they be enough?

                  Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Black Eye for the Series.......2004-01-04

This novel regresses to the level of the very poor first novel The Savage Caves. The writing is at times cringe inducing in its triteness, particularly the paragraph where Yddith swoons over Krusk.

In this book we have one new character as a hero, Yddith the tavern wench with a lot of moxy and an amazing talent for sorcery despite no real training. Jozan the cleric from the Savage Caves returns, and is relatively unchanged. Alhandra returns from the previous book and has changed from a compassionate, caring leader into a self-righteous black/white/no shades of grey prig of a paladin. She then whiplashes back and forth between being a prig and compassionate. Her back-story is "developed" with the lousy cliched tale of being wronged by her love. Krusk, the half-orc barbarian, returns from the previous book also. He now has been given a big i.q. upgrade and substantial leadership abilities.

Calmet, the main point of view character for the forces of badness is Jozan's old teacher and provides the most depth of the book as he wonders why his god Pelor abandoned him. Still though it is paper thin religious philosophy he thinks of and only deep in comparison to the awful portrayal that this "T.H. Lain" gives to the heroes.

The Black Carnival, a travelling show populated by the undead is also a high point, a neat idea that isn't given much play.

The dungeon crawl is average, but the horrible changes to the characters as well as Yddith's amazing magic abilities make this at best a 2 out of 5 stars.

A shame, the series was looking to develop quite well just 2 books ago.

4 out of 5 stars Bloody Eye is Bloody Good.......2003-04-13

T.H. Lain seems to improve with each new book in this series. The action sequences with the Half-Orc barbarian were some of the best I have ever read.

Though I know it is Dungeons and Dragons, the story seemed a bit magic heavy. It seemed as if every creature used magic the way some modern day folks use cell phones. After a bit, the creature summoning, telekinetic-type magic was just a bit silly. Even the scullery maid was emulating Obi Wan Kenobi's force tricks.

Still, the novel proved to work on more than one level. On one level, an action story that was paced quickly. On another, a theological allegory as one of the bad guys sought to determine why his god had forsaken him. The book was at its best when it struggled with some of life's most realistic theological dilemas.

T.H. Lain reaches into his bag of tricks and writes a darn good story that reaches a mountain top level of greatness, narrowly missing the summit, but providing the reader with an exhilarting ride.

3 out of 5 stars More "brain candy" from Lain for D&D Devotees.......2003-01-26

T.H. Lain has been crafting a series out of the iconic character written for the 3rd Edition release of Dungeons and Dragons, and Lain's latest, "The Bloody Eye," is a bit more gruesome than the previous offerings. Featuring Alhandra (the paladin), Jozan (the cleric), Krusk (the barbarian) and... a scullery maid... this one involves the plot of Jozan's former teacher to release an avatar of Gruumsh (think big bad evil one-eyed orc god) onto the land. Twisted beasts, gorey eye-mutilations, hack-n-slash, and, of course, a dungeon crawl make this one of the solid 'brain candy' works of D&D fiction that is just the right size to eat up and enjoy in the space of an afternoon or a long bus ride.

Can the heroes defeat the foul evil, and reclaim the land for goodness? Of course they can. Duh. But the fun is watching, not in guessing if they can...

What is frustrating is the 181 page length for the hefty $7.99 Canadian price - I'd rather the books be released in one volume of three tales for a higher price, if that means it would be of a more worthy length. Regardless, as far as brain-candy reading goes, this is a good quick reading experience.

2 out of 5 stars The Supposed 'Next' Travis McGee.......2000-08-11

I have read Clayton Douglas' monthly news magazine, The Free American, and I enjoy it very much. Mr. Douglas is a good writer. However, I can't say I like his book. It's about a guy whose name was originally Trevor Hamilton, but he changes it to Trevor McGee(sound familiar). It's quite obvious from reading The Free American magazine and webpage that Mr. Douglas is a big fan of John D. MacDonald, but in my humble opinion his character is a rip-off of Travis McGee. Just the similiarity in names tells you that. Both Trevor and Travis live on a boat in Floirda, and both embrace their beleifs passionately. Not to mention that "One Bloody Alabaster Eye" sounds alot like the Travis McGee title "One Fearful Yellow Eye". But the two also differ. They are like exact opposites. Travis clings to traditional morals and values no matter how modern the world gets. Trevor is more of a hippy. He smokes pot whenever he can get away with it, and sleeps with any woman he can get his hands onto. Not to mention that Travis is a private eye, and Trevor really doesn't have a job(he gave up his real-estate career). Mr. Douglas is a good writer when it comes to news articles but as a novelist, he kind of lacks.

                            Book Description

Now in paperback, the eye-opening book that was nominated for a 1998 James Beard Foundation award in the Writing on Food category. In the winter of 1996, Michael Ruhlman donned hounds-tooth-check pants and a chef's jacket and entered the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, to learn the art of cooking. His vivid and energetic record of that experience, The Making of a Chef, takes us to the heart of this food-knowledge mecca. Here we meet a coterie of talented chefs, an astonishing and driven breed. Ruhlman learns fundamental skills and information about the behavior of food that make cooking anything possible. Ultimately, he propels himself and his readers through a score of kitchens and classrooms, from Asian and American regional cuisines to lunch cookery and even table waiting, in search of the elusive, unnameable elements of great cooking.

                            Amazon.com

Journalist Michael Ruhlman talked his way into the CIA: the Culinary Institute of America, the Harvard of cooking schools. It had something to do with potatoes a grand-uncle had eaten deacades earlier, how the man could remember them so well for so long, buried as they had been in the middle of an elegant meal. Ruhlman wanted to learn how to cook potatoes like that--like an art--and the CIA seemed the place to go. The fun part of this book is that we all get to go along for the ride without having to endure the trauma of cooking school.

Ever wonder what goes on in a busy kitchen, why your meal comes late or shows up poorly cooked? The temptation is to blame the waiter, but there are a world of cooks behind those swinging doors, and Ruhlman marches you right into it. It's a world where, when everything is going right, time halts and consciousness expands. And when a few things go wrong, the earth begins to wobble on its axis. Ruhlamn has the writerly skills to make the education of a chef a visceral experience.

5 out of 5 stars Deft, knowledgeable, and well written.......2007-08-20

Michael Ruhlman has found his true calling. He's one of the best authors currently out there who writes culinaryeese ... not about recipes, but about the journey/experience itself. And he does it with the intimacy and sensitivity of someone who's been through the process himself.

In this book, the author takes the reader on a ride though what it's like to attend the Culinary Institute of America, from the perspective of an insider/student.

Wonderful book. Well written. Deft, and knowledgeable.

Highly recommended for self-taught cooking aficianados who love every aspect of their hobby, and also for people considering formalized culinary education and a career in the food industry.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting personal account on how one becomes a professional cook.......2007-08-12

I am an avid follower (hobbyist, not a professional) of all things culinary and my best friend is a CIA graduate, so I was very interested to get an objective view of what what goes on at CIA and to put some perspective around some of the stories he's told me thorugh the years. Ruhlman's story of his time at CIA was engaging and an overall good read, but two things left me a bit cold (hence the 4 vs. 5 stars).

                            1) I was quite disappointed to find no culinary glossary, dictionary, or reference to define the formal and informal terms he used with great frequency throughout the book. Given my interest in food and my many discussions w/my chef friend, I knew what "family meal" was, what he meant by "in the weeds," and was able to identify most culinary terms such as "bruinoise," "gallantine," and "pate a choux," but I suspect the casual reader was lost in that aspect and I've never enjoyed reading a book where I needed a dictionary to know what the writer was talking about.

                            2) I found the content of the story to be uneven throughout the book. What Ruhlman covered in depth, he REALLY covered in depth, i.e., the making of the mise en place or how to create a roux. In doing so, however, he glossed over or merely touched on many other potential areas of interest without further development, i.e., the culinary terminology (as mentioned above), the pain-staking planning and execution it must take to use the foods from one class in another, the inspiration and creation of class and restaurant menus, how CIA graduates (not just the famous ones) have influenced the world of food, cooking, restaurants, etc.

Ultimately, I think this story would have been better suited to being published as a multi-issue series in a foodie magazine like Food and Wine or Gourmet vs. as a stand-alone book. Nonetheless, and my comments above notwithstanding, I did enjoy the book and felt I learned a lot about the basics of becoming a chef.

4 out of 5 stars Effectively Translating the Language of Professional Cooks.......2007-07-30

The Making of a Chef: Mastering Heat at the Culinary Institute is a revelation to food-lovers and aspiring cooks of what goes on in a professional kitchen. Immersed in the Culinary Institute for six months, Michael Ruhlman effectively translates the cook's jargon of technique and skill into a language that everyone can understand. Ruhlman also touches upon the essential qualities beyond the cook's passion for food: consistency, curiosity and the capacity to evolve.

                            5 out of 5 stars Just Starting.......2007-02-10

I am almost 12 years old and am starting this book. I plan to become a chef when I'm an adult and I want to get a college education from the Culinary Instutute, being only 11, I want to see what the CIA will be like from a students perspective. I am almost at the chapter "Routine" and am enjoying this book so much. This book is for very serious chefs, who plan to be or are chefs. There are three books in the series so far and I have two. Michael Ruhlman talks about everything just right, like mirepoix (mero pwa), before reading this, I had no idea what mirepoix was, but learned that with the book. This book is a non-fiction book about Ruhlman's actual experience at the Institute. This book is so enjoyable. If you'd like to see more from the culinary, go to CIAchef.edu, for thier website. I plan to persue my career in Baking and Pastry Arts and own my own bakery. I will write a review for the whole book when I'm done. This is one of the best books to read for a chef.
I so far give this book 5 stars out of 5. IT is an enjoyable book.
You should get it if you are a serious chef, if not, I wouldn't, this book is all about the life of a chef.

I thought this was a creative look at the culinary world. It starts out from an outsider's perspective who is then transformed into an insider who views the world forever differently. I read this a while ago while I was still in culinary school and completely identified with his trials, failures, successes and discoveries. This was a very good read and I enjoyed it.
