4 out of 5 stars Portrait of a Marriage.......2006-04-10

Despite her Poe-like title, Brookner is more like a compact Henry James. She writes novels about romance, but she is far from being a romance novelist. The two main characters in this story, as she points out in the very first chapter, do not quite live "happily ever after" but instead find stability, accommodation, and a kind of contentment. It is, in fact, the portrait of a marriage that lasts, deliberately contrasted with the torrid sexuality and unfocused idealism of youth. The "incidents" of the title refer to six weeks spent in a Paris apartment by Maud Gonthier, the refined and hitherto restrained product of a French convent school, David Tyler, her charismatic but amoral first lover, and Edward Harrison, his middle-of-the-road hanger-on. When Tyler splits, it is Harrison who picks up the pieces. The motives for his proposal of marriage and her acceptance of it are not entirely clear, though, and while these ambiguities may be the true subject of the book, they also make a curiously unstable foundation upon which to erect such a structure. But the people are very real, and their situation will speak to many of us looking back on our youth from later life.

5 out of 5 stars A woman looking for herself in all the wrong places.......2004-11-13

When your mother laments days of French aristocracy and raises you to respectability, you rebel by choosing an English cad. Meanwhile, a respectable, bookish man yearns for you. Maud Gonthier, like Emma Bovary, confuses respectability with boredom, but unlike Emma, Maud manages to survive the folly of her desires and whims. Maud is intensely likeable in this protrait told by her daughter.

5 out of 5 stars A Searingly Intense Love Story.......2002-04-20

Few writers ever attain the depth of character and emotion so succinctly captured by Anita Brookner. Her characters beckon us to read on for as we examine their lives, we find we cannot cannot help but be moved to investigate the deepest feelings and motivations in our own lives as well. Within the novel,Brookner herself becomes philosopher as she wonders about the mystery of our emotional desires and why the events of our lives turn out the way they do. Brookner captivates the reader with her own special magic; with prose that seems almost poetic and with characters so beautifully drawn they are unforgettable.

5 out of 5 stars Incidents in the Rue Laugier.......2001-08-06

For fans of Anita Brookner, this one is almost the best. Did not find it depressing at all, on the contrary. The elegance and persuasiveness of the language is sheer pleasure, not a single false note in the characters. Ms. Brookner is a genius, ranks up there with Virginia Woolf.

3 out of 5 stars A human tragedy........2001-05-11

This novel was truly depressing. It was all about the childhood dreams of the two main characters, Maud and Edward, and how their small dreams never came to fruition. Throughout the book the characters strive for and constantly fall short of what they desire, which in both cases is freedom and love. Neither can relate to the other which leaves them both emotionally stunted and unable to fully enjoy what should be a good life together. One of the biggest problems I had with the book was the timescale. It seemed to me that the dates given really didn't match with the attitudes or style of living described in the book. I fully believed that the book was taking place around the early 20th century and was shocked when it finally declared itself to be set in 1971. All in all this is not a bad book, although I myself did not really care for it. It is well written and the story is interesting, although depressing and tragic. Incidents in the Rue Laugier seems to me to be a bitter book written about lives lived in dissatisfaction and regret. By the end of this book, I have to admit that I was really depressed and disliked the characters intensely. I could not empathise with them at all. However, by the fact that it left me sad and angry it is clear that it certainly made an emotional impact on me.

5 out of 5 stars Better Taste, Less Gross.......2002-04-06

Let's pause briefly to remember the original CLANBOOK TZIMISCE. It had John Cobb's explicit, woodcut-like art, overly vivid fiction, pages designed to look like human skin. It was often sold shrink-wrapped and one place wouldn't let you see the back cover unless you were over 18. The book supposedly made someone's little sister vomit. It was quite an experience.

With the new CLANBOOK TZIMISCE, wiser heads have, fortunately or unfortunately, prevailed. There are few grotesque descriptions and only one truly extreme drawing. (The art is mostly just Vampire: Dark Ages creepy otherwise.) No "over 18" shrink wrap here but I still would caution those younger and more sensitive people, as with anything Tzimisce. There's lots of information, especially about Tzimisce Methuselahs like Yorak and the Dracon. It suggest that the Tzimisce Antediluvian somehow now exists in all Tzimisce and can't be destroyed because he always re-emerges from the collective ooze that is this clan. There's lots about ghouls and revenants (new family, creature templates, derangements), the Children of the Dracon, non-European Tzimisce, Koldunic sorcery (new path), the Path of Metamorphosis with related mysticism and some funny stuff written in the voice of a modern Tzimisce advising an elder emerging from torpor.

Still, like many new Clanbooks, this one assumes prior knowledge- here of characters like Yorak (and the Cathedral of Flesh from the TRANSYLVANIA CHRONICLES) and Dr. Totentanz (from the original CLANBOOK TZIMISCE.) Also, they've made Lambach Ruthven older and of lower generation than in other important sources.

There are many standard features including a sample pack and discipline variations. Character templates include embraced revenants and followers of various Paths of Enlightenment. (Some path follower templates have typos- name of path not specified, wrong virtues.) There's a glossary to help with exotic terminology and a list of Eastern European names.

5 out of 5 stars THE definitive work on the Fiends.......2001-07-12

I was impressed at the sheer depth of Clanbook: Tzimsce Revised. First of all, its history is so in-depth that it arguably has as much use to players of Vampire: The Dark Ages as it does to modern Masquerade players. The Tzimisce have gone through a number of growing pains from their original inception in the 1st edition Players Guide to the Sabbat, and this book serves to deal with most of the loose ends we've seen (including issues from Dirty Secrets of the Black Hand and their "Old Clan Tzimisce" and "Souleater" problems). The templates in the back of the book give a depth to the Tzimisce that genuinely impressed me, showing a lot of work. The treatment of the Revenant families (including a new family) is fairly solid, and the Discipline variations are enough to make any Storyteller or power-gamer drool in delight.

Honestly, I wish ALL of the Revised Clanbooks had been done with so much attention to detail. As with any truly great book for Vampire: The Masquerade, as many new questions are raised as old ones are answered, and the implications of information about the Tzimisce Methusalehs, and the clan founder itself, are enough to inspire a hundred plot threads. If you've been hungering for more information on the Fiends (both in and out of the Sabbat), and want something beyond the relatively sparse old Clanbook: Tzimisce, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the amount of work that went into this book.

              4 out of 5 stars disturbing.......2001-04-19

The clan book focuses more on the nature of the Beast (excuse the pun) then on giving the players more powers to pick from. This is a cultural and historical study of the clan, from the founder (new legends about him are in here) to being the "soul of the Sabbat." The reader sees quickly that this clan has rejected their humanity and has spent the centuries exploring what thier true nature is. It was a bit disturbing to read about a group so divorced from humanity. This book will help you with your role-playing, by giving you a guided tour into the differnces between humanity and the metamorphists. You will have the opportunity to play something which is alien from the way that you and I think.

The one draw back is that the short list of disciplines is mostly a reprint from previous Tzimsce books.

4 out of 5 stars This clanbook is full of information . . ........2001-04-07

The Fiends have long been a source of hardship to play, mainly because no one understood them. I think this book goes a long way in helping you get a total grasp on your character and it's clan. Personally, I have always liked to play the Tzimisce, even without insight from white wolf. I enjoyed this clanbook more than the first version they put out, it certainly seemed better thought out. I recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book, Bad Art.......2000-10-29

This is by far one of the most interesting WW books i've ever read. The characters are great and what the tzimisce powers allow you to do is excellent when you flesh out a character. The only flaw that I saw was the artist was terrible. The drawings were nothing but monsters, while many of the Tzimisce listed were intended to be strikingly beautiful. Where the Tzimisce are artists of the flesh as Toreador are artists of canvas, they are unfortunately portrayed as monsters throught the series. THe only things it needed was a real artist :(

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Star Trek #92 The Flaming Arrow - Salvation for the series!.......2003-10-27

After the disappointing first and third books in this series and the second book being only slightly better, Star Trek #92 "The Flaming Arrow," to me, provided some salvation for the series. This being only the second book by Jerry Oltion that I've read and, I believe, the first "full" story for his wife, Kathy Oltion, I can now say with a great amount of certainty that they're both excellent writers and their Star Trek tales are to be looked forward to.

They both have a very fluidic writing style and the pacing of the novel stays on an even keel the whole way through, making for a quick and compelling read. I especially like how they threw in little tidbits of Trek trivia without making them a focal point for pages and pages and without making them the "do you remember" kind of cliché's that so often pop up in Star Trek novels. They're characterizations are "dead on" good characterizations that don't leave you, the reader, questioning the responses by the characters.

The cover art for "The Flaming Arrow" is outstanding and it's good to see cover art that has gotten away from the "plaster a few character's faces on the cover and it'll be alright."

              The premise:

After facing an alien armada bent on destroying them on the way to Belle Terre; the near destruction of the entire planet due to their moon threatening to explode and a massive flood caused by greedy olivium miners, the Belle Terre colonist face their largest challenge yet, a massive, planet killing laser beam fired at them by the Kauld.

Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise, having been charged with the safety of the colony and then later, upon the discovery of the massive deposit of olivium on the Quake moon, charged with protecting the olivium at all costs, and has successfully defended both in all cases, must now come up with the impossible; how to stop a massive laser beam from destroying Belle Terre and its colonists, or evacuate them all and take their chances returning to Federation space.

              What follows from there, as stated above, is the best of the first four New Earth novels. I would definitely recommend this novel to any and all fans of the genre. Whether you choose to read the first three in the series is up to you though... {ssintrepid}

              4 out of 5 stars A Great Comeback.......2001-06-20

After the disappointing third book in this series (Rough Trails), this one is just great. The plot is thick, the characters are well developed and the story line keeps you hooked. Someone there says the average reader works up a way to cancel the effects of the laser faster than Spock. Well...I'm a 33 year old Computer Science Bachelor and I didn't work it out faster, so maybe there's still hope for you...

1 out of 5 stars In the future, cats are still aggravating.......2000-09-15

How much worse can the NEW EARTH series get? Scotty tries to fix a toaster. Kirk woos a schoolmarm. McCoy hunts for a missing cat. That's how much worse it can get.

Spock takes longer to think up a way to cancel out the effects of a laser than does the average reader. A little boy dreams up the concept of a starship holodeck. The authors have taken their space-battle imagery straight out of "Babylon 5," and their characterization of Kirk ("Report!") from "Voyager." Even by STAR TREK standards this is not a good book.

4 out of 5 stars Back on track.......2000-07-05

After the disappointing entry of Rough Trails, the New Earth series redeems itself well with an enjoyable story that is a brisk and relatively quick read. The Enterprise is forced into a difficult circumstance yet again as they are forced to fend off the Kauld--who want to the olivium mine that Belle Terre has rights to. Kirk is the only Starfleet captain in the area and faces the task of balance defending the colony with keeping the colonist's government happy with him and his actions. Add to it the Kauld have designed a weapon of devious proportions that will wipe out all life on Belle Terre if it suceeds and you've got a great Trek novel. The scope of the novel is great and we get some development of not only the crew of the Enterprise but also some of the supporting characters on Belle Terre. And the problem Kirk faces is interesting, even if the solution feels a bit like a cheat and a lot of technobabble.

However, if you're looking for some great summer Trek reading this is it. And it also ends on a cliffhanger which means that yet again we have to make the long wait to August.

              5 out of 5 stars Grand Epic.......2000-06-24

If you haven't been noticing these last few years, the true essence of Star Trek -- the grand scope, the hopefulness about the future, the genuine sense of humanity -- has been surviving on the printed page a lot more clearly than celluloid. This New Hope series is typical of the incredibly high quality writing that's been coming out lately: vast in scope, captivating, like a mini-serious you CAN'T miss an episode of. By all means, by the first two installments of the series, then come back and read the next two. If you're a current Star Trek reader, you already know what I'm talking about -- and if you're not, it will restore your faith in the possibilities of the genre.

2 out of 5 stars Excuse my snoring! Way too slow, unbelievable, and boring........2003-10-15

Cassie Edwards has written books that I have enjoyed. (Savage Embers is one of my all- time favorite romance novels.) But this one was awful.
This book was a disappointment on so many levels. The portrayal of the characters was totally off. (A real Blackfoot Chief would never have been this mushy in front of his whole tribe.) No true history was shown in storyline at all. There was no excitement... I found myself skimming through pages just to get it over with. The ending was a total bore. Every time it seemed like an exciting plot may finally be coming, it was ended before it began. Every conflict was sewn up neatly by solutions that were not at all believable. Far too many circumstances throughout the story were way too convenient to seem possible. (Family members showing up to save the day from out of no where. A deserted cabin in the woods that was full of food and clothing that happened to be the perfect size for the woman, and for her little brother as well????)
Cassie Edwards is famous for having her characters fall madly in love within 24 hours after first meeting one another. That has always been hard for me to take. This storyline was just not good enough to make me overlook that this time.
              BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!

              5 out of 5 stars Great Romance.......2001-12-08

Unlike Pontmarie I found the book enjoyable and a wonderful love story. I loved Flaming Arrow's character. This book is set in Montana Territory, 1875, just before the west completely tamed. Hard to put down.

1 out of 5 stars Historical accuracy? Ha!.......2000-05-02

There is little historical research in Cassie's books, aside from what might be found in an old Cowboys and Indians show from the 1950s where all the Indians were noble, all the whites were bad (except for the heroine, OF COURSE) and everyone understood everyone perfectly. Either all the whites speak the (insert tribe name here) language or the Indians speak perfect English.

The love scenes are laughable, there is no plot and the characters are barely two-dimensional.

I would like to know if Cassie answers any of her fan mail. I love reading about the Beautiful People of our time. My mother is part Cherokee and she is so beautiful. Where do you get these ideas from. Do you visit the location and then do your search for the authenicty of the book or tribe you are writing about. I have to check and see how many books I own by you. You are great. If you could, I would love to hear from you. Thanks for the wonderful reading material that you give to us readers.

4 out of 5 stars Book Review of Flaming Arrows.......2006-03-29

The book I am reviewing is Flaming Arrows. Flaming Arrows is about a boy named Chad Rabun who lived in Tennessee. He and his family lived near the Indian tribe, called the Chickamauga who are practically at war with them.
The Chickamauga were starting to attack the settlers, so everyone in the area went to the fort that would protect them. A family, the Logans, was not treated well because their dad was a friend with the Chickamaugas. Most of the people called them traitors. In the story a fire breaks out in the fort because the Chickamaugas shot flaming arrows toward it. One Chickamauga attacked Chad but the hoofs of the horses running through the fort trampled the Indian. Chad almost shot another Indian from the Chickamauga tribe, but he forgot to load the barrel of his musket with powder.
I liked it when the Indians chased Chad, how much detail and action were written into the story.
I disliked parts of the story because the settlers killed alot of Indians.
Of a rating of 1-5 I would give it a 4 because the author had a lot of detail and describe the setting really well.

4 out of 5 stars Old, but still a great read.......2000-04-06

I just finished re-reading this book after having read it when I was a child. It is one of William Steele's classic frontier stories. The dialog is rich, the action is fast paced, the characters are fairly well-constructed, and there is even a moral to this tale. Trapped by raiding Indians without much water in a small fort with his family and a few other frontier families, Chad's father stands up for the Logan family, a poor woman with a young son about Chad's age, and two smaller children. The woman's husband, called Traitor by the others who are sure that he is in cahoots with the Indians. The other settlers want to force the Logan family outside the fort but Chad's father, Raburn, won't allow it. At first Chad is repelled by his father's standing up for this family of a traitor, but through the book he learns that it's not fair to judge or blame someone for what another person does - even if it's that person's father. Chad learns to follow his father's advice given near the begging of the book and resolves to "think things through" before forming an opinion. Young readers might be forewarned that this book was written at a time when Indians were portrayed as enemies to the early settlers of the American wilderness. Violence and death are portrayed in the book, as well as, heroism and bravery. For older readers who read these books as youngsters, it's a very good read.

For me as a German "Dutch Oven Lover" this cookbook is an easy and efficient way of learning how to cook with a Dutch Oven; the recipes are explained in detail and easy to change with other ingredients that are handy.
The highlights of this book are the tales which are very amusing and informative at the same time. It gives this cookbook a touch of a Wild West story book, nicely to read and entertaining.
When did you read - really read - a cookbook last time?
This book was fun to read and I learned a lot of "handling" my Dutch Oven and outdoor cooking.

                            5 out of 5 stars Too Funny.......2002-02-08

I havn't had the opertunity to try the recipes yet but this cookbook is a great read. The recipes all look basic enough with a good mix of simple supermarket ingrediants as well as wild game recipes. I have about a 1/2 dozen dutch oven cookbooks and these are by far the best read so far. Unfortunatly despite the listing this is *not* spiral bound and wont stay open while cooking hands free. The second book, "more Cee dub's Dutch Oven and other camp cookin" is still spiral bound.

5 out of 5 stars Best ever cookbook!.......2001-08-02

Never have I laughed so much as I did reading this cookbook. The stories are great and the recipes are even better. I used this book extensively while camping this year and it was the first time I ever used a DO(dutch oven). When my very picky middle daughter started looking for seconds and thirds at our meals, I knew I had learned a good thing. If anyone is just starting out or even is already using a dutch oven, this book is a must have! (Try the blackberry dump cake, I had'em licking out the dutchy!!) You will enjoy and use this book again and again!

5 out of 5 stars This Book is EXCELLENT!.......2000-05-30

While not being much of a cook myself, I have found this book to be truly enlightening. (It helps to have a good cookbook for those of us who aren't blessed with the gifts of Cee Dub) It is not only filled with all kinds of great recipies, but they are organized in a way that makes it easy to find something interesting to make... whether cooking in the back yard or out camping with the whole family. I know that this book will be one that gets USED! Plus, it is full of great stories from an incredible person. I have to admit that this is the first cook book that I have been able to sit down and read for enjoyment as well as MUST HAVE Dutch Oven tips and recipies. A must have for the outdoorsman!

There are shortened sections pertaining to the history, selection, and care of DO's which provide a wealth of information for the beginner and the more experienced camp cook.

a few months ago i got on this cast iron kick, bought a couple skillets and a pair of dutch ovens and all the tools and was ready to be a camp cook, only problem was, I had no dutch oven recipes. I read a few reviews and decided that experience was the best teacher and Cee Dub seemed to fit the bill. I've gotta tell ya, ol Cee Dub puts it all together in a very easily understood cookbook that explains things in great detail, not to mention that the best parts may well be the stories he shares. if you want an education on how to cook with a DO, this book is the real deal. a word to the wise, dont buy junk iron, LODGE is the best of the best, bar none, remember, you're only going to buy it once so you might as well have the best.

The follow up of the first book is based on the same success recipe - easy to prepare, detailed cooking recipes for Dutch Oven's and entertained with amusing and entertaining Tall Tales.
I own both "Cee Dub's and other Camp Cookin'" books and the second book is not a refreshing of the first book, the recipes are different and it seems that Cee Dub is full of Tall Tales to make this cookbook an outdoor story novel.
This 2nd book is also like the 1st one highly recommended for lovers of outdoor and especially Dutch Oven cooking lovers.
I recently bought my second Duch Oven to get deeper into the described secrets of Duch Oven cooking.

5 out of 5 stars We want More Cee Dub.......2000-07-12

After reading Cee Dub's first book and then his new Second book, we can only conclude that it is a must for the camp cook. The recipes are delicious, healthy and easy to produce. Cee Dub also indicates how to spice each recipe up with our own preferred tastes. His tall tales make you want to read the book in one sitting. However the recipes make you want to start cooking. Having lived near the area Cee Dub refers to in his travels, I can imagine seeing him out there on the river and in the backcountry where I work and play. Cee Dub gives little tid- bits of hints to make every camp cook more seasoned and makes every upcoming trip a feat to look forward to. His stories of "pards" gone by touch the soul of anyone who enjoys good times, friends and family. I would like to know the "real story" behind some of the antics going on in Ceedub' s camps. I doubt people would ever want to leave with such a gracious host, great cook, and even better story teller. Keep up the great work, Cee Dub, we will never put you down!

5 out of 5 stars Great Camp Cookin! And only getting better!.......2000-06-12

Cee Dub's second Cookbook, More Dutch Oven Cooking, is a must for anyone interested in camping and social gatherings in the outdoor's. Cee Dub takes you through all the basics of beginning Dutch oven cooking mixing it with his colorful experiences in camps and wilderness all over Idaho. His down home manner of explaining his techniques is superb and easily understood by all. I didn't want his first two books to end and am looking forward to his next book. Not only for the recipes but for the creative stories of life while cooking for everyone in less than ideal conditions and places. I was able to follow his recipes easily and create wonderful meals not soon forgotten. Cee Dub's wit and humor of his experiences only adds to the deep appreciation of his book. Cee Dub's dedication to his craft shows us that we can all be excellent cooks with little effort. The best part of Cee Dub's book is the rewards after reading and creating some of his great dishes. The book is easy reading and can't be put down only to start cooking. Thanks, Cee Dub, for a most wonderful cookbook.
