From the looks of her debut novel, Girl Anatomy, Rebecca Bloom at least seems to have a functioning sense of humor. When her narrator, Lilly, talks about getting over a guy, she describes trying to lose him like a dieter's last five pounds, those ones that "attach to your inner thighs and warble 'Hot Lunch' every time you take a step." Lilly is a twentysomething Los Angeles mess, unable to find love and underappreciated at work. When her best friend gets engaged, Lilly decides it's time to stop whining and pull herself together. The novel follows her as she parties, shops, and smooches her way to self-empowerment. Lilly has a sunny optimism about the perfectibility of human nature that suggests her author is a perfectly lovely person. Unfortunately, her author also happens to write like an illiterate teenager. The book reads as though Bloom kept a personal diary, changed the names, and called it fiction. To wit: "I always have and will love cute boys. Actors usually happen to be cute, and although lately I have moved on to musicians like Jonah, I still have a soft spot in my heart for film stars. John Cusack, are you listening?" She'd better hope not. --Claire Dederer
Book Description
The hip and heart–warming story of what it means to be a girl and what it takes to become a woman.
When Lilly's best friend, Maya, gets engaged, the tenuous peace treaty Lilly thought she had finally established with her perennially single self shows itself to be as long–lasting as shoulder pads and frozen yoghurt. Wavering wildly between ecstasy and envy, serial dater and retail–therapy shopper, Lilly vows to get her life together.
While sipping lattes from the Coffee Bean and planning forever with Maya, Lilly embarks on an uproariously comical and strikingly poignant ride of transformation, told through a series of delightfully engaging interior monologues. Travelling the byways of her own past, Lilly learns to be optimistic about her future and relish her new–found 'chic–dom'. In a voice that grows stronger, louder and more articulate than she ever imagined, Lilly ultimately comes to embrace her on–the–verge–of–womanhood status in all its uncertain yet exciting glory.
Depicting the comic adventures of being a grown–up still coming of age, Rebecca Bloom evocatively and enthusiastically reveals tender truths about friendship and true love.
Customer Reviews:
Irritating Style.......2007-06-27
I agree with most of the negative reviews. The story is fine for light-hearted chick lit, but the writing is incredibly sloppy and makes reading more of a chore than a pleasure (which defeats the purpose of escapist fiction). I kept tripping over the clunky sentences. Bloom has an irritating habit of describing action ("ing" ing) while writing dialogue.
Here's an example:
"I don't know." Rolling to face him. "I do, but we haven't, and I'm leaving."
"I know, but does all that matter?" Caressing my face.
"Maybe, yes...I mean, what would it mean?" Running my fingers over his lips.
"Mean in what sense? Sex can't change our relationship even if we wanted it to." Pulling me closer to him.
The entire book is written in this fashion. I don't know whether this is a new technique they teach in writers class, but wherever Bloom learnt this she should know that it's extremely irritating and has caused me to throw the book down on a number of occasions.
Definitely a "don't recommend", there are much better examples of chick lit out there.
good book that many can relate to........2006-01-25
overall, this book was not at all boring. there was always something going on with the main character, lilly, whether she was reminicsing about ex lovers or impulse shopping out of unhappiness. interesting book, said a lot of things that made sense that just about any person could relate to when it comes to love.
it did have its cheesy moments and a few cliches, but its a solid book and you do see that lilly does mature and grows stronger as it goes on.
Girl Anatomy is a smash hit!.......2005-04-29
In the phenomenal novel Girl Anatomy, Rebecca Bloom artfully presents the story of a young woman yearning to discover her true love, but on the way she uncovers the beauty within herself. Throughout the novel, Lilly constantly takes part in interior monologues, revealing the inner struggle of who she is versus who she wants to be. Flashbacks are also extremely important in the characterization of those in the novel, helping the reader understand why a character acts a certain way. The plot seems to progress slowly due to the numerous flashbacks; however, without the history behind the characters to provide a sound foundation, the reader would not be able to appreciate Lilly's life changing transformation from a boy crazy college girl into a mature woman who experiences true, lasting love for the first time.
Lilly's insecurities are evident through her interior monologues. Her mind engages in battles over what she should do versus what she wishes she had never done. In the first half of the novel, these inner conversations are harsh and lengthy; however, as the story progresses and Lilly grows in confidence, she begins to agree more with her actions. There seems to be less arguments taking place in her mind. She is startled at first when she agrees with herself, but eventually her inner monologues disappear altogether. Lilly no longer needs the extra voice inside her head. She grows up and becomes comfortable in her own skin, ready to embrace her newfound chickdom.
While still on her path to self-discovery, Lilly's memories often surface to enlighten the reader's understanding of her character. These flashbacks occur at extremely odd times whenever something in Lilly's present sparks an incident from her past. Without the flashbacks in the novel, the reader would never have understood the great leap Lilly takes from her days of obsessing over boys to her reunion with Jonah. The reader learns through many flashbacks throughout the novel that Lilly goes through boy after boy, only to end up broken-hearted and alone. Thank goodness she has loving friends who are always there to cheer her up and give her good advice. Lilly realizes she has transformed into a mature adult when she herself gives Maya excellent marital advice. Lilly falls in love with her first love, Jonah, all over again. Yet this time, she and Jonah are mature enough to engage in a serious relationship. They are both ready to commit to one another; this doesn't immediately mean marriage, but they are both comfortable with being a "we" while still retaining their individual personalities.
The interior monologues and flashbacks present in Girl Anatomy effectively reveal Lilly Abrams's troubled nature. As the two devices decrease in usage, the author subtly portrays Lilly's growing maturity. She eventually is able to break free from her insecurities because of her loving relationship with Jonah. She learns that true love cannot be put on a schedule; it will happen when she least expects it. Being in a relationship does not mean losing her individuality; rather, she and Jonah feel more like themselves when they are together. She decides that in life, there is no such thing as a sure thing, but one must be willing to take a risk and pray for the best in order to truly live. Lilly Abrams experiences pure happiness when she can finally be with another person and not have to fight for peace within her own mind.
Nice escapist read.......2003-11-04
With the weather getting colder, its great to pick up a book that reminds you of summer. Girl Anatomy is quick, clever, shiny, and most of all, quite funny. Lilly is the voice inside all our heads no matter how old we get and how mature we think we are. Enjoy!!!
Alternatingly funny and idiotic.......2003-09-22
At 1st I really liked this book. I related to the main character's feelings towards men and love. But then she was smoking pot & talking about how great it felt. She said she thought sex was special, but she went into detail about her 2 one-night stands. While it had it's good moments, the book was basically plotless & talked way too much about drugging & partying, and not enough about how she "changed" from the time the book began untill when it finally ended.

Impressive Sequel to 'The Tempest'.......2005-10-11
Williams is best known for sprawling multi-volume SF and Fantasy sagas, but here has written a very brief work of only 200 pages that is quite successful. (It's amusing that even at this brief length, Williams still feels a bit wordy. This very short book has a few passages that could have been cut with no real loss.) Caliban has, many years later, finally found his way off the island where Prospero left him and, cheated of revenge by Prospero's death, has instead sought out Miranda to tell his story to, after which he intends to kill her.
From this device, Williams gives another perspective on the events of 'The Tempest', as well as the earlier story of Caliban and Sycorax arriving on the island, Caliban's life alone after the death of Sycorax, and Caliban's early encounters with Prospero and Miranda. The story is nicely told, with language that feels appropriate to the character. This is a Caliban who does indeed know how to curse, but also how to explain why his curses are justified by what he sees as betrayal from both Prospero and Miranda.
The ending is a bit weak, with a clever, but not really persuasive, device used to prevent the promised final and fatal confrontation. The book is still, overall, a genuine pleasure to read.
Caliban's Side of the Story.......2001-08-20
This is my first Tad Williams novel, and I have to say that I'm pretty impressed. When my friend thrust this slim volume into my hands, I confess, I had my doubts. Not another entry in the "two-sides-to-every-story" genre. I have to admit that there are some very good novels that fall into this category -- Rys's Wide Sargasso Sea and Maguire's Wicked, to name two -- but there are some very bad novels that fall into this category as well. Caliban's Hour, I'm happy to say, falls into the former category.
Particularly impressive is the way Williams managed to catch the cadences of Shakespeare's Caliban. I had recently finished teaching Shakespeare's The Tempest in a World Literature class prior to picking up this novel, so Shakespeare's Caliban was fresh in my mind. While Williams has a decidedly different approach to the character of Caliban (and, indeed, Ariel), he captures the rhythm and poetry of Shakespeare's character.
At the beginning of Williams's tale, Caliban is a character bent on revenge, and the object of his vengeance is Miranda. It soon becomes clear, however, that what Caliban really wants is a chance to tell his side of the story, to make Miranda understand him. Over the course of one night, he unfolds the story of his life on the island, beginning with his life with Sycorax, his mother, and culminating in the irrevocable changing of his life with the coming of Prospero and Miranda.
True to Caliban's promise that his story will only take one evening, this novel can, indeed, be read in one evening. It's short -- 201 pages -- and the story is compelling enough to keep you turning pages until the story is complete. It does, however, take more than one hour to read!
The audio version of this book as narrated by Ron Perlman........1998-04-15
The audio version of Tad William's book as narrated by Ron Perlman (of television's "Beauty and the Beast") is absolutely wonderful. The tale is told, for the most part, in Cailban's "voice." Ron Perlman gives Caliban the same sort of realism and pathos that he gave to his television role. William's Caliban, however, is no "Vincent." He has his own agenda to fulfill with Prospero's daughter 20 years after she has left the island. Mr. Perlman's voice is mezmerizing and he gives Caliban the perfect voice with which to tell his tale.
Unknown and brilliant!.......1998-03-04
Caliban's Hour is a well-written, moving, and ultimately magical re-writing of _The Tempest_ (in the same basic genre as R+G Are Dead and Grendal). Like many of us (or at least like me), Williams read Shakespeare's play and found himself most attracted to Caliban, the "savage" native who's love for Miranda is brutally refused and who is generally mistreated by Prospero et al. So he decided to re-tell the story from Caliban's point of view, adding in some key background (like scenes with Cicatrix, C's mom) and, of course, the present-day "sequel" elements which make up the book's action. And it works! William's Caliban, like Gardner's Grendal, is an epic, tragic, wonderful character whose story cannot help but enthrall and move. The prose is top-notch (no suprise for anyone familiar with Williams' other works). The debt to Shakespeare, while obvious and intentional, is not over-played, as Williams clearly stakes out his own ground apart from the master. And the ending is both surprising and awesome! All in all, this is one of the better, most underread and -rated books of the last ten years. For anyone who loved Tailchaster, MS&T, or Otherland, anyone who loves Shakespeare, and anyone who appreciates classic literature that reinterprets classic literature, Caliban's Hour is a must read.

For single and married women.......2007-04-06
"New light continually beams from this source of heavenly knowledge, to direct the conduct and illustrate the work of God and the ways of (wo-)man."
-- Walter Scott
Michelle Hammond fulfills God's promise of enlightening, freeing and healing women by sharing her experiences, discoveries, and insights, laced thoroughly with scripture and sprinkled with modern song fragments. Michelle's writing style is conversational, and easy to read and absorb.
The author invites readers to examine our feelings and past with thought-provoking questions in nine sections, ending each chapter with encouragement for effort and progress. Each builds on the next, so reading, thinking and writing in sequence is more productive, but gems and nuggets are found just by dipping. The final chapter helps us put the process into action.
What we learn about ourselves and our relationships are a gift from God sent through this author. She chose well her Proverbs for wisdom, Psalms for comfort and numerous others for guidance.
Although the author's ministry focuses on single women, this workbook also offers hope to women in troubled marriages. Please accept Michelle's valuable offer of hope NOW to "discover the ability to celebrate Love all over again" and "reach out to the One who holds the answer to YOUR situation."
I suggest clergy and counselors check this out as a resource to recommend.

The Hard Questions

Book Description
Heart traces the arc from heartbreak to wholeness, with powerfully insightful selections drawn from such masters as Marcel Proust, Thomas Hardy, and Vladimir Nabokov, as well as contemporary luminaries ranging from Anne Tyler to Banana Yoshimoto. Readers can shed the incredible weight that a broken heart leaves behind via a selection from Alain de Botton’s wittily perceptive On Love, and then go on to Anita Brookner’s delightful revelations about love and loss, Alice Munro’s quietly uplifting portrait of a rejected woman finding new strength on a seaside holiday, and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s depiction of the unexpected liberation of a tortured young lover in Paris.
Book Description
Undergoing a mastectomy is a devastating experience. This unique and hopeful coping guide fills a gap in women's health literature. While there are many fine books on breast cancer, none deal with the very real, and very practical issues facing a woman who is about to undergo a mastectomy and who then must deal with the challenges of living in the post-mastectomy body. Written from a professional and personal experience, Zuckweiler covers the practical, physcial, psychological, social and sexual aspects of recovery. And, she provides advice for every day life, like buying and altering clothes, choosing a prosthesis, treatments for phantom pain, and new exercises she has developed to deal with the pain and special needs of mastectomy patients.
Customer Reviews:
Response to earlier review.......2000-06-23
This is a very helpful, caring, and complete guide for women. Contrary to an earlier review, the author DID NOT have a double mastectomy for cosmetic reasons. If that person had read the author's story, she/he would know that the author lost 3 generations of the women in her family to breast cancer and had a mastectomy as a preventative measure. That might be controversial, but it sure isn't cosmetic! This book will be helpful to anyone who has to deal with the surgery or its aftermath.
What to expect after a mastectomy........2000-04-23
The authors choice to have bi-lateral prophylactic mastectomies in no way diminishes the value this book has to offer breast cancer patients. It provides a wealth of information regarding what to expect, post-operative care and reconstruction options. I found it informative and comforting.
breast cancer survivor advocate.......2000-03-18
The book is about a person that had a mastectomy because of an elective cosmetic surgery ,cancer patients did not elect to have cancer the issues are VERY diferent: like life and death.I DO NOT RECOMEND IT IF YOU ARE A CANCER PATIENT.
Book Description
The Crimes of Children is the horrific journey of Charles A. Morgan. It is the true story of a mentally-ill child, compounded by severe abuse by his classmates. He was left un-medicated and untreated for almost 3 decades. This story unfolds as his behavior and decision-making get to the point where he tries to take his life many times, through overdoses, even to the point of jumping-off a major interstate bridge into the Ohio River. He wanders through life, with no friends and countless jobs, only to be hospitalized several times. Then, as a child, begins to learn how to walk. Chuck learns how to live after a near-successful suicide attempt. He was able to find his heart and his soul and, like a miracle, found forgiveness for those who hurt him so much - finding his heart, when most would have perished.
Customer Reviews:
Touching and informative.......2006-05-22
This true story really touched my heart. Written in the form of a dislexic without editing, it shows the result of childhood abuse by peers that is so common today yet usually kept hidden from parents and other adults due to embarrassment or feeling of fault. This book helped me see what my own daughter has been going through by recognizing similar behavior patterns shown by the author and my child. I was able to see her plight at school and take action to correct the situation.
This is a quick read and able to capture your heart and attention. Most of us can relate Mr. Morgans story to some extent or other with our own past. I recommend this to anyone interested in knowing what goes on in schools and how to protect your children. A must read for all parents, teachers, or anyone involved with children. Hats off to Mr. Morgan for coming forward with the truth!

I really enjoyed reading this book by one of my previous teachers.
testimony to love.......2004-10-19
this true story proves that if you lose the love of your life and life has no meaning for you anymore, despite the heartbreaking event....circumstances can happen (i believe made possible by God) and put someone in your life - not to take the place of the person who was lost - but to give life meaning once more...to mend a broken heart...and make possible happiness and love once again.....
Book Description

Are you having trouble finding the "right" man or woman? Are you afraid of making another "mistake"? Do you keep getting involved in short-term relationships? Are you beginning to think finding love is a matter of luck?

Customer Reviews:
A must-read if you're dating someone divorced.......2002-07-15
For 10 months, I've been dating a not-so-recently divorced man (over 3 1/2 years ago) and this book has helped me understand him more than any other book or person. When we met, he apparently thought he was in Stage 4 (Ready for Commitment) but it turns out he's in Stage 3 (Come Closer/Go Away). If not for Learning to Love Again, I probably would have written him off months ago but the book really helped me understand what's going through his head. I just wish the book were longer!!
Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, this Book is Gray.......1999-06-02
Hello! Well this book was ok, an average book. However, not being divorced myself I may not appreciate the wisdom here fully. I believe in life long commitments and I don't believe in easy divorce. But this is more about life AFTER divorce, for those of you who have been through divorce whether out of stupidity or wisdom, out of selfishness or generosity, evil or good. Here, you get some tips to get your life back together. Although the casual attitude toward sex in this book may be a reflection of its time (the eighties before AIDS and HIV). So folks, if you have been divorced and still feel like living this may make the rolling Sisiphus ball more bearable for you. I would put my own advice: Never take marriage casually.
Before you take another mate-You've got to read this book!!.......1998-09-18
Mel Krantzler explains in detail, and with humor, the phases the human goes through after a divorce, to get them to a point of re-connecting again in an intimate relationship. I found myself (as he explains) bouncing back and forth between phases, each time I had another breakup..This book is a must read for the person (either male or female), who's found themselves alone again after divorce, break-up, or death of a life partner; before you even consider a new relationship..

Super Entertaining Ideas.......2007-04-17
I've been entertaining for over 20 years for family and friends and was looking for some new ideas. I tried some of the recipes in this book for my last Christmas party and they were a huge success. I can't wait to try some of the other seasonal ideas in this book.
This cookbook exists to make you look good.......2006-08-21
Although I have never done an entire menu from this book, every recipe I've tried from here has been delicious, super-easy and perfect, and I've tried several for my dinner parties. The desserts, especially, are delicious, impressive and simple.
I love how the menus are all arranged seasonally, taking advantage of appropriate ingredients and cooking methods. Stick to the season you're in, and you can't go wrong. The author's suggestions for making a party special are fun to read, too. Admittedly, I am from San Francisco, and so is she, so she mentions foods and places that are near and dear to my heart. Her food sensibilities are right up my alley.
If you're a Saveur reader, a couple of these menus will look familiar, as they are from articles she's written for them (the Gnafrons and the Old Stoves Dinner).
i love this book.......2006-07-25
Simple Soirees is my new favorite cookbook. In December I lugged it to New Zealand to bring as gift to our hostess. After she opened it; I snuck it off to my room to read at night. It distinguishes itself by being the first cookbook that I have read cover to cover. It read like a novel. We spent the rest of our stay making many of the dishes. Our favorite was the whole fish wrapped in herbs for Christmas Eve...it was extraordinary. My daughter and I have made several of the sweet things together like the heavenly fragrant geranium ice cream and the lavander and cardamom cookies. Everything we have made has turned out delicious.
I think Peggy Knickerbocker is a genuis. It is not only my favorite cookbook, but it is my favorite gift to give as well.
Great ideas--delicious food.......2006-04-06
Lovely ideas, encouraging, and full of do-able advice.
And notice on the flap of the book--NO author's face, only a photo of lovely legs. Hmm, little ego and lots of advice--Cheers.
inspiring & easy to use.......2005-12-06
I like to have people over for dinner but I'm never sure what makes a good menu. This book takes the worry out of entertaining. The tone is accessible and reassuring, the recipes are great and not hard to follow. Now I feel confident enough to mix and match some of the menus and I know everything will come out alright.
