Book Description
From the award-winning author of A Student of Weather, a funny, sad-eyed novel about a woman caught between real love and movie love--and real love doesn't stand a chance.
This is a novel about movie love. Set in Ottawa in the 1990s, it is the quixotic tale of tall, thin Harriet Browning, inflamed by the movies she was deprived of as a child. Bent on seeing everything she has missed, she rapidly becomes so saturated with old movies, seen repeatedly and swallowed whole, that she no longer fits into this world. Equally addicted are her three companions-of-the-screen: a boy who loves Frank Sinatra, a girl with Bette Davis eyes, and an earthy sidekick named after Dinah Shore. Breaking in upon this quiet backwater, in time with the devastating ice storm of 1998, come two refugees from Hollywood, the jaded widow of a famous screenwriter and her movie-expert stepson. They are Harsh Reality. With them come blackouts, arguments, accidents, illness, and sudden death. But what chance does real life stand when we can watch movies instead? What hope does real love have when movie love, in all its brief intensity, is an easy option? In this brilliant and poignant comedy of secondhand desire, movies and movie lovers come first.

A memorable gift.......2007-04-14
I received this book as a gift for Christmas 2003 from Mrs R. First I should say that I have never been interested in movies, old or new, and a great many of the references made in the story were lost on me. Still I enjoyed this book as much as enjoying a book is possible, it has been the best read in the last several years. The fact that I am also a middle aged woman, and that at the time I lived Ottawa, in the Glebe, possibly contributed to this. Nevertheless, the writing is elegant, unpretentious, humorous and touching at times, terse and transparent in my interpretation. The narrative appealed to me on different levels - impeccable style, character development, the nostalgic overtones, the subtle and not at all subtle observations of deep seated human shortcomings and virtues. Harriet is a quirky woman, in her way, and possibly her experience speaks to readers who identify with her in her somewhat irrational defiance, in her refuge in movies. Garbo laughs is in the very small of books I have read twice, because I knew there would be still much to ponder and discover on the second take, after a few months, and still more to enjoy. I know this book does not appeal to everybody, probably not to fast readers. It did to me. Thank-you Mrs R.
Why did I bother?.......2005-06-19
I bought this book on the advice of a friend and forced myself to read it all. I have never read such a disjointed, uninteresting novel - and I'm a movie buff!!! The maneuvering of the plot in order to bring it around to the movies is contrived and boring. The constant change of point of view is distracting and the characters unbelievable. One of your reviewers compared Garbo Laughs to Margaret Atwood's work and Russo's Empire Falls...PLEASE...get real.

GARBO LAUGHS really got under my skin. And stayed there..........2004-07-02
Elizabeth Hay's GARBO LAUGHS really got under my skin. And stayed there. I swear I think of certain images from it at least once a day and I can't say that of any other book I've read in the last several years. She takes you right inside the scene and she understands so perfectly how to write about the quiet in the early morning in a house filled with people, how to make you really feel it, she never insists, she's never histrionic, she's never melodramatic, she trusts her best readers, and it all feels so effortless, it all so beautifully catches the ebb and flow of real life. And when she writes about Harriet (a great character) losing her temper, there's something so absolutely, so wonderfully comic and wild about it.
And here are just a few more of my favourite things:
She was a witness to the cozy hilarity on the sofa...
ankles touching, soul aghast...
Like a Huron she carried her coffee....
And the whole section that follows that, about being seriously underslept
The chapter called SHOCK. The way she does fire is amazing--that incendiary combination of fire and kimono--and I love the emotional complexity and humour of this whole section...
And the incredible description of the double ladder of slats (and the glass inserts) in the window of the hotel room in Havana, the part that goes "there was a whole world in the fittings of each window, the workings that allowed air without sun, light without wind or rain..."
Dinah Bloom being piggy-backed on Lew's back while still wearing her skates is also a great scene: medieval in a surreal way, like something out of a painting by Breughel.
(...) So painterly and human and shy and funny and warm and so exciting to read, it just soars above Carol Shield's cutely clinical and coy description (...).
Disappointing.......2004-06-18
I loved Hay's earlier novel, A Student of Weather but was extremely disappointed in this offering. The story is character driven, but the main characters aren't particulary interesting or believable. Their (endless) ruminations about films are so banal I kept wondering if the author was deliberately making fun of them. The fact that main character Harriet is supposed to be a writer is also hard to buy into, given her slightly creepy and thoroughly pedestrian missives to her idol, Pauline Kael. The setting is supposedly contemporary, but the characters' sensibilities and interests seem oddly constricted and old fashioned -- as when husband Lew flees the undercurrent of marital tensions by retreating to his room to play his mandolin. If you like to hang out with people who revere Guys and Dolls as one of the greatest films ever made, and consider the question "Sinatra or Astaire?" the height of probing film criticism, this book is for you.
Boring.......2004-04-02
I realized half way through the book that I just didn't care what happened to these people. The story line just dragged. I rarely don't finish a book but was glad to put this aside.

Marion Zimmer Bradley, one of the most beloved and praised fantasy storytellers of our time, has once again written a compelling and powerful novel with larger-than-life characters.Winter Musgrave's past is largely blank, her memories missing or tissue-thin. And she has the terrible feeling that something horrible happened in her empty past--results of which are now haunting her with unbridled fury.Seeking help, Winter turns to Truth Jourdemayne and learns that the key to unlocking her lost memories lies within herself--and in the magickal circle of friends in college. But the circle was broken long ago. Winter must reconstruct it is she is to save her life. Not just the story of a woman's search for her missing past, Witchlight is a powerful novel of contemporary fantasy that pulls readers in and hold them until the final page. Anyone who loves good contemporary fiction will devour Witchlight.

This story is crazy!.......2006-06-07
When I read this book I found it to be a little crazy. As a fan of zimmer I had decided to read most of her books. This story begins as a girl who cannot recall most of her life and is quite disterbed. In the beging I was "hooked" because I wondered Why. Well to my surprise the rest of the story was one that was so crazy that it remains in my memory till this day. Although I am writting this review today I in fact read the story about two years ago, and forgot alot about it. Even the author. But again the "story" has been with me ever since. It wasn't until today that I saw it was one of my "recommended" books. I read the brief explanation and the whole story came back! This is a great book if you are looking for somthing "diffrent" The story is one that it will be stick!
Not her best work.......2004-06-16
I read Witchlight over a weekend as a fill in and relaxation. The plot focuses on a woman "Winter" who lost her memory due to some psychological trauma, and is struggling to regain her memory before the evil demon becomes too strong. For me, that kind of plot is questionable at best and this one tries our imagination way beyond credibility. While I sympathize with authors who use common nouns for names, "Winter" was a name that was often confusing in context. In the plot, Winter and some college students began dabbling in dark magick some years ago and formed a magical group where they conjured an artificial elemental, but were too inexperienced to clean up after themselves. Winter gets pregnant, leaves her ne'er do well boyfriend and goes home to her abusive though rich parents. She forgets all about college (including the abortion and the magic) and becomes a successful Wall Street broker. Some years later her ex-boyfriend is almost killed in a motorcycle crash and is in a coma for years. Lost in limbo land between life and death he tries to make contact by summoning the artificial elemental which is still wandering aimlessly around the nether reaches of darkness. It begins to haunt the former members of the college circle, and Winter's torment begins. The book deals with how she tries to remember all that she's forgotten. Most of the other characters are cardboard, including the two professors at the psychic Institute where she turns for help, but rejects most of the help. Action is stilted and unnatural. Memory loss is treated in unrealistic ways. The artificial elemental is either very, very powerful or weak depending on plot at the time. Winter turns out to have psychokinetic power to destroy electric devices and other things. And after the long build up the ending is trivial. It just stops, the elemental goes away, and they live happily ever after. I was disappointed.
Slow starter, but keep reading.......2002-12-28
I've never been more tempted to put a book down after the first fifty pages as I was when I began reading this book. Bradley is one of my favorite authors and the biggest draw about her novels is their remarkable ability to keep you engrossed in the text. The beginning of this book, however is a completely different story. You go through the motions along with the main character, winding your way through the broken and patchy memories of an inconsistant past. Who wants to go through that? Even though you might be tempted to give up and move on to something else, stick with it. The end result will please you. As the memories slowly begin their emergence, the novel becomes more and more inticing, with the whispers of forgotten friends calling through the haze to reach you. Anyone who is a fan of Bradley's gothic storytelling will not be sorry that they read this. I know your not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but don't judge this one by the first fifty pages or so.
Not MZB's best..........2002-12-02
...but not her worst, either. I haven't read any of the other titles in this series, so I didn't know what to expect. MZB's output has varied wildly in quality from brilliant to disastrous, and I was ready for this to go either way. For me, this sat smack in the middle.
I wasn't overwhelmed by the characters. Perhaps it is that our main character, Winter Musgrave, is part-amnesiac and terrified through the first third of the book, but it was very difficult to get comfortable with her. Once we have some idea what is happening to her it is easier to dig in. I think that MZB has an interesting premise with this one, and I think the "why" of the mystery is well thought out. However, (note: I am trying to avoid any spoilers, otherwise this might be more coherent) I think Winter's eventual visit to her family serves only to introduce characters for another novel and doesn't seem structurally significant, and the ending did not satisfy.
Another excellent book from Bradley.......2002-10-06
I really liked this book. I got hooked on Bradley/books after reading Mists of Avalon, which in my opinion is the best book by Bradley. I really enjoyed this new series of books about magic and everyday life so to say. Enjoy!

night world books.......2006-08-04
I fell in love with the nightworld books a long time ago, and
bought each one when it came out and reread them over and over
again. When I got the internet I looked for strange fate with no
luck, now supposedly there is. I reordered used copies of two books because I lost them. I'm looking forward to rereading the
series which I haven't done in ages because I've been so annoyed
I couldn't find out what happens next. I only hope that there is
a U.S. release of strange fate, I hope both the publisher and L.J.Smith realizes that not to do so will be unfair to all U.S.
readers who bought her books and have been waiting so long for
the concludsion. It would be like J.K. Rowling saying I'm only
going to release the last Harry Potter book in these places the
rest of you too bad, you don't get to find out. And we all know
that isn't happening to the potter books so why should a publisher do it to a series which have been popular in the united states do it to strange fate now? we deserve to know the ending, we have been waiting just as long as eveyone else to read
the final tale. I would preorder it in a second if I saw the title on the booksite for release. I only hope that it will be
availble to me here in the U.S..
Update on Strange Fate!.......2005-09-22
First off I must say that this was the first of Smith's books that I picked up, and I have read it many times since then. The latest news on Strange Fate is that Smith has almost finished it, and is planning to release it to publishers soon. She is also looking at editing the rest of the books in the series. No definite dates set, but let's stay hopeful!
The Best!.......2005-05-17
This book is one of the best! The magical way LJSmith wrote drawn me into a magical world.A twine of magic, adventure and romance, you can hardly put this book down after you started. And I have been reading the same book for like 10 times! You should also check out ALL her books. They will draw you into suspense...
Wonderful as usual.......2004-05-10
This latest story set in the Night World is L.J. Smith at her best. Galen, the hero isn't the usual tough guy. He's kind and sweet without ever being wimpy. Keller and Iliana are amazing characters as well, even if Iliana does start a little ditzy. You (or at least I) can't help but care about the characters and hope that somehow everything works out at the end.
The back of the book is slightly misleading - Galen is NOT destined to be the Iliana's soulmate - he's destined to be her husband. As those familiar with the Night World know, that's a big difference. For those who aren't familiar with the Night World this book probably isn't the one to start with. If you don't want to start all with the first book in the series (Secret Vampire), which is also absolutely amazing, you might want to try Huntress (book 7)as that's the book where the concept of Wild Powers and the end of the world is first explained.
Lisa Jane Smith's Witchlight is great!.......2003-02-27
I liked Keller. I liked Galen. I even like Iliana. It was as usual a great story.
I just didn't think the romance was very well developed in this book but as usual the way Lisa Jane Smith writes draws me into the magical world she has created. I am desperate to read another book by her, having read every book she's written except Heart of Valor and that only was because I can't get my hands on it. If anyone else is looking for someone to read until L.J.'s next book here are some of my suggestions:Annette Kurtis Clause, Sweep series by Cate Tieran, Isobel Birds Circle of Three, Companions of the night (Vivian Vende Velde? I think that's how it's spelled) Christopher Pike and the daughters of the moon series.

Printed on jacket flap:.......2007-09-20
"Three children, out walking in the woods one day, are surprised to see a strange-looking person climb nimbly down through the branches of a beech tree. It is a little old woman with a shabby raincoat and a rosy, innocent face. To the children, it is soon apparent that their new friend is nothing less than a witch.
Mary has lived as a recluse for years and fears her powers are weakened, but hte children's belief in her encourages her to try out her old magic. For them, of course, it is wildly exciting when Lucy's first tooth is planted in the ground and grows into a pearl, when Sarah goes for a broomstick ride, and Christopher finds he has the strength of ten. But some of Mary's enterprises give them anxious moments - and it is not long before they discover that witchcraft has its dark and dangerous side, too. For Mary has an enemy who pracrices black magic, and all the children's courage and faith are brought to the test when the evil witch pits her strength against Mary's kindly, healing powers.
This first book, by a talented new English writer, is both funny and an exciting story, firmly rooted in an affectionate family setting. In Mary, Nina Beachcroft has created a comic and lovable character." (1973)

A Must-Read for Believers in Magic, Young and Old.......2005-10-13
I have checked out this book time and time again from the children's section of my hometown's library. This is really a tale for the ages, and it's better written than many of the fantasy books for children that are currently popular, such as Charlie Bone. There are some dark moments, but it's never unnecessarily rough on its audience. This is one of the few books I've read that doesn't lose its magic once the action begins. It's lovely and enchanting throughout.
A delightful tale of magic and adventure.......2000-01-25
It is a pity this book is out of print. If you are lucky enough to stumble on it in a library, or at a used book sale, it is a lovely tale.
Three children accidentally meet and befriend a sweet, strange little woman climbing a tree in the woods, and find that their new friend is just what they were guessing - a witch. Their friendship with Meg brings them a new perspective, and she is also a powerful ally. But by becoming her friend, they have also gained her enemy.
There are many adventures, and eventually, the children are swept into the age-old battle of good and evil, and discover that friendship isn't always easy and risk-free.
This is a light and lively story, with adventures in the woods, and lighthearted magic. But the book carries a gentle message about the need for loyalty to friends, and courage in the face of seductive evil. It is beautifully written, and very engaging. Its primary target audience would be children 8 - 13 years old.

Book Description
This book focuses on the formulation of mathematical models for the light curves of eclipsing binary stars, and on the algorithms for generating such models. Since information gained from binary systems provides much of what we know of the masses, luminosities, and radii of stars, such models are acquiring increasing importance in studies of stellar structure and evolution. As in other areas of science, the computer revolution has given many astronomers tools that previously only specialists could use; anyone with access to a set of data can now expect to be able to model it. This book will provide astronomers, both amateur and professional, with a guide for - specifying an astrophysical model for a set of observations - selecting an algorithm to determine the parameters of the model - estimating the errors of the parameters It is written for readers with knowledge of basic calculus and linear algebra; appendices cover mathematical details on such matters as optimization, coordinate systems, and specific models. While emphasizing the physical and mathematical framework, the discussion remains close to the problems if actual implementation. It begins with an overview of the problem and a discussion of the observational data that form the basis of any model. The treatment then turns to the direct problem (computing the light curve and other observables from the a given set of parameters) and then to the indirect problem (determining a best-fit set of parameters from the data). The book concludes with chapters on specific models and approaches and the authors' views on the structure of future light- curve programs.

Book Description
In the two decades since the development of the first eclipsing-binary modeling code, new analytic techniques and the availability of powerful, sometimes dedicated computing facilities have made possible vastly improved determinations of fundamental and even transient stellar parameters. The scale of these developments, of course, raises questions about modeling tools, techniques, and philosophies, such as: Who will maintain and upgrade the codes? Will the codes be open to improvement by outsiders, and if so, how? And, indeed, what should be the goals of a modeling program? Such questions had not been aired for a long time and, for this reason alone, deserved to be discussed in as general a forum as the community provides. This volume contains material presented by Commission 42 (Close Binary Stars) during the International Astronomical Union's XXI General Assembly in Argentina, July 1991, and during IAU Colloquium 151, Cordoba, Argentina, August 1991. The techniques discussed include simulations of stellar bright and dark spots, streams, partial and complete stellar disks, prominences, and other features characterizing active stars; modeling of polarization parameters; models that use radial velocities as well as line profile simulations to model velocity field variation across stellar disks; the weighted effects of brightness asymmetries; and models for translucent eclipsing agents such as stellar winds.

Customer Reviews:
Sushi for Dummies.......2007-09-22
Excellent detailed book. Best part was the details on making the best rice you can as that is the main ingrediant.
"For Dummies" marches on!.......2007-05-30
This is the first "For Dummies" book I've seen with pictures. It's a nice try, but I wouldn't make this my only sushi cookbook. The explanations are pretty good and well in keeping with the "for dummies" tradition. I think sometimes they waffle a little bit on principles (saying one thing, but then admitting that they do it another way).
After reading reviews for this rather unlikely book and for another book with reputedly superb photography, I elected to purchase both and I wasn't disappointed: the other book with the amazing illustrations wasn't expensive and the two really complement each other: The Complete Book Of Sushi! The price is right: buy both.
Perfect book for sushi beginners........2007-05-19
I read this book from cover to cover twice. It's well laid out and covers most of the aspects of sushi making. It was a very easy read.
I wish it had more pictures. Had lots of illustrations though.
Blessing from the gods.......2007-05-12
I had no idea how to prepare sushi before I got this book but i really wanted to learn how becuase i love the stuff and its to expensive at sushi bars. I was very impressed with this book. Its very simple to understand (hence the title!) and has a great layout with lots of superb recipes, enjoy!
Well-written and informative.......2007-04-03
I used this book to make sushi over the weekend and found it to be very instructive and simple to use (as well as humorous and pleasant to read). I followed the directions for making the rice on the stove top and it turned out perfect! The detailed maki-rolling instructions/diagrams were easy to follow, and my rolls ended up looking (and tasting) great! My friends were all impressed. I also learned a ton about the cultural aspects of sushi that I didn't know before, and I considered myself fairly knowledgable.
The only reason I give four stars instead of five is that I didn't feel there were enough recipes for different types of rolls, or nearly enough pictures. But the focus of this book is on technique and the process of making sushi (not necessarily recipes) and for that it was invaluable. I plan to purchase another book to use solely for recipes.
Side Note: The only other special equipment I purchased was the Joyce Chen Sushi Mat and Rice Paddle Set. You can make great sushi using the techniques in this book without buying a lot of extra kitchen gadgets. I turned my rice out onto a large plastic bowl and it worked great.
