3 out of 5 stars Not Lars' Best Book But Worth A Look.......2004-11-30

Lars Gustafsson is a treasure in American writing, but many of his books were written in Swedish first and we have to go through different translators to get to the meat of what he's saying and doing. Yvonna Sandstroem doesn't do him many favors, either here nor in the poetry she's done, everything sounds really weird, almost the way the members of ABBA pronounce English, as though at a distance.

In Funeral Music the narrator tells a kind of ABBA tale (think of "The Winner Takes It All") about the melancholia of having once been young, and now the freshness of youth, its dreams and hopes, is all swept away. Set in prison in a dingy African cell in Senegal, the narrator remembers how once he had a wonderfully talented soprano girlfriend, Ann Marie (as well as a number of more sexual adventures with white and black men and boys) -- women are theology, he says, men are philosophy. Their youth together was filled with promise, and now their lives have fallen apart--cue up the ABBA tune, "Knowing Me, Knowing You." I really enjoyed the book, but it isn't half as original as some of Lars' other titles.

5 out of 5 stars Not having read the first two installments of this trilogy........2003-04-27

One of the more engaging reads I have had in a few years. Guardian of the visions is fast passed and fun! Essentially a intrigue novel. Radford utilizes real individuals from seventeenth century England and France to set her cast of characters on a well written journey. So well written that at no time I find myself at a loss for not having read the first two installments of this trilogy.

5 out of 5 stars Twin sons and heirs embroiled in Queen Elizabeth's world.......2001-06-06

Guardian Of The Vision is the third novel of Merlin's Descendants, and familiarity with the previous books will lend to a smooth transition in reading this story of the Elizabethan era in Great Britain. Twin sons and heirs become embroiled in Queen Elizabeth's world and face witches, demons and change in this story of a journey to fulfill magical heritage.

5 out of 5 stars Lyrical and exciting saga.......2001-05-09

Since the time of King Arthur, a Pendragon has always guarded England and its shores. The descendants of Merlin also try to keep the peace, but when war occurs they react quickly to end the conflict as soon as possible. In 1553, Raven is the current Pendragon and will soon name her grandson Griffin, the older twin brother of Donovan as her heir.

During a border skirmish with the Scotts, Griffin has a religious epiphany that leads him to the abandonment of his powers, his titles, and his birthright. He becomes a Catholic priest. Donovan picks up the mantle of the Pendragon, but though he understands the role he does not have the power to perform the job. Roanna, descendent of the Sorceress Nimue, has called forth a demon, but her summons fails as the demon of chaos Tryblith controls her. Only a Pendragon can stand in their way of spreading chaos throughout the world.

The third installment in the Merlin's Descendents series places a magical spin to true historic events. Irene Radford enchantingly brings to life the early Elizabethan era so that the audience will think that the author contains Merlin's genes. The battles on the mundane and mystical planes propel the story line forward, but the characters make the novel so fascinating that the good, the bad, and the ugly compel the reader into a one sitting session.

5 out of 5 stars My last year's vacation reading.......2000-04-10

I found this book while on vacation last year on Martha's Vineyard. I found it a thoughtful handling of an interesting subject. It's very inspiring and, since I believe in guardian angels, a good read.

I feel my guardian angel was with me on the way home from my trip. I left the book on top of my suitcase by a chair in a bus station and went over to the snack bar a few feet away. Suddenly something made me look back. A suspicious looking young man with a jacket over his arm (on a hot July afternoon) was seated by my suitcase. I quickly went back to pick up the book and suitcase before he ran off with it. I feel my guardian angel told me to look back at that moment. Have written to the author about that experience.

          Book Description

Miracles are found throughout the Bible and in the lives of many saints. They can even be found in our ordinary daily lives. I have been blessed with some of these mystical events. I kept journals about how they affected my life. I read them whenever I want to get peace of mind or when things in life get complicated. I even wrote down some laws I practiced during life that gave may a closer relationship with a Higher Being. Read the eight beatitudes by Jesus to begin your journey into my book and into mysticism. Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are the meek: for they shall posses the land. Blessed are they who mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice'' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Its hard to believe that one of the best hacker novels was written back before computers were common...I believe the commodore computer was the most common household computer around when this was written!

Would really like to see a modern sequel!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful 20 years ago, and almost as wonderful today.......2004-10-28

I've now read The Adolescence of P1 (at least) three times. The first time was before I got my first computer (but after I'd learned to program in Fortran on mainframes). I most recently finished this book yesterday, and loved it as much as I did the first time.

Back in my early days, the thought of a computer having 256 megabytes of immediate access memory in one place amazed me. Now, it's a bit humorous to read the section of the computer's artificial intelligence going euphoric when it finds itself with that much memory.

I learned a lot about computers the first time I read it, but when I read it this time, I recognized more things because I understood the background better. For example, when I read about the military intelligence code utilities that P1 stole from a government computer, I recognized PKZIP (and similar compression utilities) in this description on page 190:

"... it abbreviates the hell out of data ... boosts transmission speed by an order of magnitude ... The decoding process at the receiving end can reconstruct the original data completly intact. No losses whatsoever."

In spite of its datedness, this is a very enjoyable book. Gregory, a young college student, manages to write a computer program that is both greedy and fearful, two of the attributes of intelligence according to the theme of the book. Eventually, the computer grows out of his childhood, but some readers would question if it ever grew up. I do believe that P1 grew up by the last few pages of the book when it learned about its own mortality.

The book ends on the note of possibility when we realize that P1 still lives, but in a very subdued and careful form. I often wonder what Thomas J. Ryan would have done with a sequel.

On a personal note, I really enjoyed finding out on page 109 that the computer had read Stranger in a Strange Land (*), for two reasons, 1) It is one of my favorite books, and 2) I had just finished rereading it for the umteenth time just before starting this book.

Of course, I also love Heinlein's Moon is a Harsh Mistress (**), which has as it's main protaganist, a computer system that has become self-aware. If I had to pick only one self-aware computer book, P1 or Moon, that I'd be allowed to reread again, I'd keep Moon is a Harsh Mistress, because I thought the character development was stronger in Heinlein.

                      (...)

                      4 out of 5 stars Computer Consciousness.......2002-03-20

Thomas J. Ryan wrote The Adolescence of P-1 in the mid-seventies, and for its time, it must have been a breakthrough in computer science-fiction literature. The story is compelling: an adaptive computer program is created and set loose by a bored college student and becomes so advanced that it develops self-awareness. The computer virus, dubbed P-1 by its creator, can communicate with humans in English through a computer terminal. The dialog between P-1 and the humans is both amusing and provocative, while P-1's ominous nature tugs at the imagination. P-1's existence has a purpose: to survive. Eventually, P-1 must deal with the value of human life and the meaning of what it means to be human. The theme of the novel centers on those two topics while tying in to the speculations on Artificial Intelligence.

However, the novel is not perfect. The Adolescence of P-1 was written by and for those in the nascent computer industry of the mid 70's, an intensely male-dominated industry. As a result, the female character in the novel (the hero's girlfriend) seems a bit oversexed for reality, especially in the beginning. I read through the cheesy, unrealistic dialog and laughed at its wackiness. It seems as if the author dreamed desperately about a woman like this, and had to write her in somehow. Or Ryan might have done a little satire on the flat characters of pop culture by putting one in his novel. But I wouldn't rule out the first possibility. Later, however, when the plot's theme broadens to encompass the more philosophical scope of humanity, she is portrayed as the vital feminine counterpart to the hero.

I think of myself as quite the computer buff, with a comprehensive knowledge of the computer industry and its technological history. However, in my short 17 years of age, I had never encountered the level of computer competence that this book demands. The actual technology described in the book is ancient. Although the author clearly explains the concepts that are required for believability, a few explanations cover too much depth and move too quickly for any normal reader to follow.

But I thoroughly enjoyed the book despite these minor setbacks.

Ah, the wit of a computer geek.

5 out of 5 stars P1 still has impact after almost 25 years.......2002-01-13

I read this book the first time decades ago. I was just getting my feet wet in the computer industry and the story was compelling and exciting. We didn't really know it at the time, but the hero of P1 wrote a polymorphic computer virus that could learn and grow. We are getting to this point only now, so the story has enormous relevance. Don't get me wrong, I'm not glorifying computer viruses. What attracted me then, and still does, is the possibility that we may one day interact with machines that are our equals, emotionally and intellectually. This book gives us a glimpse of that brave new world.

                      4 out of 5 stars Still a good story........2001-12-17

This book is rather dated now as far as the technical side of it
as well as the 70's outlook on life in general. But, I miss the old outlook, anyway. Aside from all that, it is still a great read.
I believe it to be one of the first science-fiction stories dealing with a computer virus, even an intelligent one. Very tight and doesn't let up. You'll love the dialogue between the AI and the people it deals with. Get this one if you can find it.

I am surprised by all of the reviews of this book by people who read it several years ago. I thought I was being silly by coming on amazon to find this book that I read when I was [...] (13 years ago), but now I see that I am not the only one that this book had an impact on. I highly recommend P.S. I love You to anyone.

                      5 out of 5 stars An all-time favourite.......2006-03-02

This was one of the most treasured books I have ever read. As it was also the very first teenage romance I read (over twenty years ago), the ending of the book was a huge surprise. It is impossible for anyone reading a review to apppreciate how beautiful this book is, you simply HAVE to read it. This book is timeless. I also loved the sequal "Falling in Love Again."

5 out of 5 stars I will always remember this book...........2004-06-06

When I was in 9th grade a friend of mine gave me this book, I didn't even ask for it she just said here read this and let me know what you think. So I read it and I laughed, cried, and fell in love with the characters. I live in Orange County Calif. and I could imagine everything they were talking about even Palm Springs. Im 27 now, I must have read that book at least 20 times. Im here on amazon to purchase another because I gave it to another friend years ago and she gave it to anohter and so on. That book takes me to another place and I will always remember how special this book means to me.

5 out of 5 stars A Poignant Book for Teens.......2004-03-18

I first read P.S. I Love You by Barbara Conklin 11 or 12 years ago when I happened to come across it at a second-hand book sale. Even as an eleven-year-old, I thought the title was corny. Nevertheless, I was drawn to purchasing the book because of the cover photo - a beautiful girl with the straightest brown hair ever and sad soulful eyes.

At the time, I had had no experience of ever falling in love. The most I'd experienced was a few shy crushes, but once I started reading the book, I absolutely fell in love with it. Barbara Conklin did an amazing job of writing from the perspective of a sixteen-year-old, and it is no wonder that this book was a sure hit with its target audience: teenagers.

Teenagers will be able to identify with all that Mariah (the main character) feels. You can relate to the bliss of falling in love, and even though I myself was inexperienced in love, it described first love in the way I imagined it to be - and also turned out to be. Also, when you read about Mariah's insecurities and what Paul Strobe (the heartthrob) will think of her if he finds out she's never had a boyfriend, it will remind you of your own experiences. Perhaps now as an adult, these matters seem trivial, but as a teen, you could totally understand why she panicked and felt the need to "impress" Paul...

I must have read P.S. I Love You more than a dozen times that first summer I had the fortune of finding it. Each time, I never failed to have tears in my eyes. In fact, it doesn't matter how many times you've read it because the ending will always bring you to tears. But don't misunderstand me: this isn't a book filled with misery and by no means is it a tragedy. The realistic side of portraying what it is like to lose love is surely an important life lesson for all teens, and the humorous parts will also bring you much laughter.

After each reading, I always wish that Barbara Conklin could have written a happier ending. After all, we all have a part of us that wishes for the fairy-tale ending of Mariah and Paul living happily ever after! Admittedly, there is a small part in all of us that wishes first love could last forever...

But Barbara Conklin has ended the book as she has for a good reason: she shows us how it is possible to go on even when love has been lost. You will admire Mariah's strength and courage in overcoming her loss and also the poignancy in how she keeps Paul alive in her memories.

P.S. I Love You was the first teen romance I read, and the one that paved the path to reading more. More than a decade after reading teen romances, P.S. I Love You remains the only story I remember. I recommend this book to all teens who are interested in teen romances. One word of advice: don't throw this book away! I did and regretted it terribly! I've just purchased a used copy online again and am infinitely happy to possess it again. When I read the story now as an adult, it seems a little too simple and innocent, but it is definitely a book I would like to pass on to my own daughter in the future, when she herself becomes a teenager.

5 out of 5 stars The best book I have read in my life.......2003-12-11

I read the book when I was 12. I didn't like reading and my 6th grade teacher asked me to read a book, I found P.S. I love You. I fell in love with the book and it brought me into the world of reading. After that book I kept reading book after book but none of those books have staid with me like P.S. I love You has. I am 32 years old and many times through my lifetime I have thought about the book. I have looked everywhere for a copy of the book now that I have a 12 year old. I hope she enjoys it as much as I did.

I love this book. Not just for the recipes but for the clean design and beautiful photographs. Everything about this book makes you want to use it over and over.

I do have one word of caution. Her miso soup recipe calls for you to boil the miso. She makes an effort to explain how beneficial miso is for your health but unfortunately, boiling miso destroys all of the good enzymes.

Add it at the end by turning off the heat, mix in your miso, and wait a few minutes before serving. Heat activates the enzymes but, again, boiling will destroy them.

Aside from this small detail, it is one of my favorites amoung my vast collection of cookbooks.

5 out of 5 stars Better than I expected...great book for soup lovers!.......2007-08-11

This book is the perfect soup cook book. I really love soup and wanted some new and interesting recipes. This book definitely delivered! I have tried many of the recipes and all of them were delicious. Each recipe is very unique and my favorite so far is the roasted vegetable soup. The roasting causes a sweetness and carmelization that is delicious and even though there are a lot of ingredients prep is quick because it is mostly just chopping up veggies.

One of my friends was recently diagnosed with Celiac Disease and this book is helping her through her tough time with her new dietary restrictions. She is not able to use any canned broths or bouillions that you could buy at the store so the vegetable stock recipe in this book is helping her to be able to eat the soups she loves again.

                                    This is a great book!

4 out of 5 stars I wish there was images.......2007-06-20

I think a good cookbook should have an image for every recipe.
This cookbook has beautiful images, but I wish they would show me an image of the cooked soup instead of images of the ingredients. I know what a raspberry looks like, but I have no idea about raspberry soup.
Else than that I think that the yummy titled of the recipe make up a little bit for the lack of images, they all sound good. They are simple yet not obvious soups. They have refined ingredients, but not obscure, you can find everything at the grocery store.
My only other critique would be that the organization of the explanation is trying to simplify the flowing of the making process, but I think it is just confusing. I would like a 1-2-3 kind of book, but this one is more like a flowing text wich makes it hard to follow once you are in the kitchen with your stuff cooking fast.
Over all it seems to be a good book, full of nice little recipies. I just wish there was more images...
