Jo Miles has a nice London home, a lawyer husband, two lovely children, and a thriving part-time career as an interior decorator. In the world of contemporary women's fiction, she's clearly due for some kind of disaster. In Fourplay, disaster comes as divorce. Jo's husband leaves her for a creature Jo comes to refer to as "the Cliché," a 23-year-old blond secretary. After hubby's departure, Fourplay becomes an extended bout of frog-kissing as Jo, clearly much too saucy and adorable for a lifetime of singleness, entertains four different suitors. Sean is an irresistible cameraman, about whose sexual proclivities we hear far too much; Martin is a millionaire record exec; Conor is a steadfast old friend; and Jeff, her ex, of course comes crawling back. Throughout, Jo is supported and nurtured by her chubby, hilarious, less adorable best friend Rosie. On the whole, the book is ridden with clichés, but here's the funny thing: those very stereotypes make Fourplay a pleasant--even a compulsive--read. We know all will be right for Jo; we know Rosie will never let her down, yet never be prettier than her, either; we know true love will descend on all like a wet, inevitable London fog. Jane Moore's writing is just funny enough, just edgy enough, and just true enough to make us revel in these clichés rather than resist them. --Claire Dederer

Book Description

At age thirty-three, Josephine Miles is forced to come up with a brand-new life when her husband leaves her for "the cliche"--his very young, very pretty secretary. Suddenly she's single and back in the dating game with the added complication of children in tow. But Jo's no wallflower, and she soon finds herself with not one but four eligible bachelors vying for her time and affections. Add her two kids and her now booming interior design business to the mix, and she winds up with a nightmarish schedule but a dreamy love life.

So who are the contestants? There's Sean, the sexy foreign affairs correspondent who sweeps Jo off her feet and proves to be masterful in bed; Martin, the music industry mogul who offers luxury, stability, and a glamorous lifestyle; and Conor, Jo's trusted confidant, who knows just what to say to make her smile (why hadn't she noticed his irresistible smile until now?). Then there's Jeff, her ex-husband: she wouldn't consider hooking up with him again, would she? It could happen--especially when Jeff's romance with the sweet young thing sours and he launches a full-scale campaign to win Jo back.

Sophisticated, spirited, and as compulsive as a box of bonbons, Fourplay offers a new take on the single-girl life perfect for the thirty-something audience. Fourplay--what a position to be in...

5 out of 5 stars great chick-lit.......2007-02-03

lately I have been reading a lot of bummer chick-lit but this one was a winner!! It was a clever plot and easy to follow. Definitly a great book if you just want something fun on an airplane or over vacation!

3 out of 5 stars A light read, but full of cliches.......2005-08-21

These books about women finding love are some of my favorites because they are easy entertainment, but I grew bored with it by the end. There wasn't much depth to the characters such as with Rosie, Jo's best friend. She was the stereotypical plain, chubby sidekick with low self-esteem. The men that are vying for Jo's affection weren't that great either. Martin seemed dry and humorless and I was left wondering why Jo would even consider him. Sean seemed to have the most personality out of all four men except for his "flaw." Jeff was infuriating and Conor seemed too perfect to be true. I think there could have been more development between Jo and the men, especially Conor. The characters and their dialogue seemed too perfect too; everyone was so..."nice." I didn't expect too much from this book, but I've read better "chick-lit" and this one was disappointing.

3 out of 5 stars America or London?.......2005-08-05

I really enjoyed this book, but the one thing that drove me out of my mind was the currency in the book was dollars. In one particularly infuriating sentence, Jo's son, Thomas, says, "Mummy, the machine swallowed my last quarter." Now, the use of the word 'Mummy' tells me the book is set in England, the use of the word 'quarter' suggests to me that the local currency is US dollars. I found that 'mix' to be insulting, quite honestly. The change in currency is unnecessary.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2005-07-18

I found this book very entertaining to read. I have grown fond of all the red dress ink books.

5 out of 5 stars Almost too addictive.......2005-06-18

I started this book out of curiosity. It belonged to my mother and has been sitting on the bookshelf for over a year. With little else to do but study, I started Fourplay to relieve the boredom.

By the third page I was hooked. With her rollercoaster of emotions and events, Jo Miles provided me with the ultimate distraction from revision.

I strongly reccommend this book to anyone who has ever been remotely interested in what makes relationships work. But make sure you have enough free time when you start it, or the other things will get ignored.

    Book Description

There are those who live extraordinary lives, and there are those who tell the stories. Award-winning author Theodore Taylor is that rarest of combinations: he does both.

Having spent a lifetime creating characters, writing novels, and recounting the tales of others' noteworthy acts, Theodore Taylor finally tells his own story in his new autobiography, "Making Love to Typewriters." His is a story worth telling, too, for in between the hours spent at his beloved typewriter enthralling audiences with his words, Theodore Taylor lived a life full of adventure, excitement and characters, the likes of which are hard to find today.

From his humble beginnings in Statesville, North Carolina, to his rise to one of the country's most prolific and bestselling authors, Theodore Taylor shares the stories behind his stories. He remembers his days as a child in the South, where the memories of simple pleasures became the backdrop of future novels such as "The Weirdo," winner of the 1992 Mystery Writers of America "Edgar" award. He tells of his time as a Merchant Marine in the Caribbean, the eventual setting of his award-winning classic, "The Cay." He recounts his time as a Hollywood scriptwriter, where he lived and worked with screen legends as a means of supporting his own passion. He did it all with aplomb, taking the exceptional in stride as he created fifty-nine books for adults, children and young adults alike.

A master at his craft, Theodore Taylor has created countless memorable characters throughout his career as an author. In "Making Love to Typewriters," his fans finally learn the stories of who and what inspired the man who has spent a lifetime inspiring others.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This Author's Life Story is Fascinating.......2007-02-11

Theodore Taylor died in late 2006, so his Making Love to Typewriters, in which he shares his life's writing and employment experiences and his deep, deep connection to the craft, is especially meaningful and poignant. Taylor was born to write and he does it extremely well. Reading of his love for writing and his experience feels to this reader as if Taylor is sitting in that upholstered chair across the room from me, speaking from his heart about using the Statesville Public Library as a child, driving to the Outer Banks in the old Chevy truck with his dad, covering major stories as a newspaper journalist, sailing on a geodetic survey ship in the Bikini Atolls - and the ideas for novels and books that evolved from those and other experiences. What wonderful reading! The reader lives Taylor's experiences so clearly, in all their excitement and color. More than worth the purchase price! An experience to last a llifetime.

    Book Description

A stark, ultramodern novel of an affair's disintegration.

An immediate bestseller in France, Making Love is an original and daring retelling of a classic theme: the end of an affair. As much an exploration of setting and place as it is of the affair that comes apart in them, Making Love follows a couple's final days together in Japan. Toussaint writes with an economy and restraint that evoke the distinct imagery of film while allowing a startling proximity to the feelings of his characters. The result is vertiginous, standing traditional images on their head and transposing the conflict and confusion of lost intimacy onto the labyrinthine ultramodernism of Tokyo and Kyoto. Brilliantly written and strikingly original, this is a stunning work of new fiction from one of Europe's most promising authors.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars End of an affair.......2004-10-19

In Jean-Phillippe Toussaint's world, the details matter. The author of _Monsieur_ as well as _The Bathroom_, Toussaint excels when cleverly describing situations in agonizing detail, with all the skill of an artful rendering or a classic oil painting. There are no whirlwhinds of action, barroom brawls or car chases. The action in _Making Love_ occurs in scenes involving dropped umbrellas, inconvenient faxes, and missed taxis. A couple has drifted apart, and their relationship will apparently end in Japan. An ultramodern Tokyo provides the sterile spaces against which the drama is played out. The narrator carries a bottle of hydrochloric acid with him at all times. What will he do? Will he toss it in the face of a stranger? His girlfriend? The female protagonist, a prickly conundrum, cries and sulks. As their worlds seem to crumble around them, the couple tumbles through a landscape of outer calm and inner turmoil. As the reader comes to finish the novel, he realizes that Toussaint has made himself a hero of sorts, simply through the molding of his bleakly wonderful creation.

What a marvelous novel. While _Making Love_ has none of the humor of _The Bathroom_ or _Monsieur_ (both are recommended), it remains a worthwhile read for Toussaint's gifted description of lives coming apart.

4 out of 5 stars lovely and bittersweet.......2007-09-11

The author did a fabulous job reminding the reader of a time of seductive innocence. The protangonists were sincere, patient and genuine. I would reccomend this book to any person who is seeking a world of tolerance and understanding. There is no sex or disrobing. The kids made me want to go back in time. I found this a touching, emotional novel. Read it!

    5 out of 5 stars Sweet Book.......2007-08-01

Its been a long while since I was in high school and this story really took me back to those times. It wasn't a very long book, but it still took the time to let Ivy and Zak to get to know each other. It was a story about growing feelings between two kids in high school, but it didn't talk down to the reader. There could have been more time for character development, but the guts of the story - the heart of the story - was very sweet. I'm a big fan of interracial romances with BW/WM and I recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for teenagers and anyone who loves teenagers!.......2007-03-18

This is a gem of a book! David Updike has created two wonderful young characters who are not afraid to break barriers as they explore their feelings for each other and their emerging young adulthood. Their story will gladden the heart of any teenager looking for a good read by a writer who clearly believes young people deserve excellent writing. David Updike is a master observer of the heart - and does so with memorable prose that will interest young and old. I highly recommend this book and hope parents, teachers and therapists will also take notice of IVY's TURN.

1 out of 5 stars A totally implausable account of a Doctor "coming out"........1999-06-17

I have read many books on this subject both fiction and non and this is one of the worst. I think it takes a man to write about such an intensely masculine experience. No one can write effectively about feelings and actions that are impossibly out of ones own realm.

The dissolution of a marriage is the main thrust of the book and only incidently is the growing cravings of the Doctor for male companionship and sex.

Other than the predictable story the book is filled with so many cliches and tired phrases it makes one wonder why anyone would make a movie of this piece of junk.

    Book Description

A novel of love, ambition, poetry, and nuclear waste.

The Yucca Mountain Project deep in the Nevada desert is the first planned long-term nuclear storage facility. The project is designed to contain nuclear waste for ten thousand years, the amount of time it will take for the waste to no longer be radioactive. It is an ambitious project, especially in light of the fact that in this country alone we lacked the foresight to anticipate Y2K. Given this daunting responsibility, the project employs an artist, a botanist, and an architect to contribute visual warnings to the site, in a manner decipherable to future generations.

Conrad imagines an influential poetry professor who insists that the project include a poem--a great poem, an epic poem. It is this poem that brings us to the center of an extended circle of minor poets who are continually upstaging, back-stabbing, and falling in and out of love with one another. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Chicago, this is a story of science and poetry, manipulation and intrigue, and the lengths to which people will go for their passions.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Needed an editor.......2005-05-23

I saw hints of good writing hidden beneath a lot of drivel in this book. Conrad really really needed someone to objectively edit this novel - it would have been so much better. I felt that the book really lacked any definite structure and that superfluous descriptions dragged on for pages. I was bored and frustrated for most of the novel. Good title, though.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime, brilliant, funny.......2001-11-30

Conrad's debut has the confidence and steady prose of someone writing a fiftieth, not a first, novel. The story is a timeless one, however - the debut meets the mogul - in this case poet, in the academic world. The book is rich with taut, lively characters, who inhabit a world so many of us have traveled, trying not to choke as we did. This is a can't put down sort of book, and Conrad the most promising and delicious sort of writer. Get it and crawl into a big chair somewhere. I did, and didn't get up until I was through.

4 out of 5 stars Impressive First Novel.......2000-10-24

Good work, James. An impressive first novel, but it could have been tightened up a bit. The story is in slight danger of bogging down under too many details. Still, a good, fast read with an interesting premise.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Book!.......2000-08-01

Once I started reading this book, I had trouble putting it down. The plot is intricate, but engrossing. It appeals to a very wide audience, from gay to straight, old to young, poets to fiction writers. It is extraordinarily well written, and I enjoyed the characters until the very last page. I wish that it had never ended!

    5 out of 5 stars Loved It!.......2000-08-01

This book was fabulous! I couldn't put it down, loved every character and particularly the way all the stories intersected. Conrad reminds me of Armisted Maupin, an author whom I adore.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting beginning, but is it worth it to continue?.......2003-02-18

I managed to find the first volume of Whittemore's "Sinai Tapestry" at our local public library. True to form, it has the same weird touch that characterized his first novel (Quin's Shanghai Circus), but lingers more on each of its characters. Whittemore is writing for the long haul, and what may look like a singular book on the surface is obviously only part of the whole. This, I think, is my problem with it. I was so amazed by Quin's Shanghai Circus, that I expected more of the same here. The ingredients are the same; the cake tastes different.

This volume introduces the characters, including: Skanderberg Wallenstein, who discovers the original Bible and a disturbing secret about it, and so decides to write his own; Haj Harun, antiquities dealer who has been alive for over three-thousand years, and sometimes having trouble keeping his centuries straight; O'Sullivan Beare, the umptiumpth son of a poor Irish fisherman, caught up in another war in the Middle East; and Stern, son of Strongbow, who feels it is his destiny to try to build a new world in a land that fiercely resists anything but tradition. Whittemore's trademark method of interweaving the background of his characters while continuing an overall plot puts all these characters in touch with each other, sometimes working together, sometimes at ends.

The details and some sections here are as good as anything I've ever read, but the novel didn't congeal for me, and I was disappointed. Maybe I had expected too much. I'll still finish off the series, as I find the books, but unless the succeeding books somehow cast new light on the first volume, this one was a wash for me.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Woven of Magic and Dreams.......2002-01-26

What can anyone say about a book like this, except that it is too short and ends too quickly for my taste. A wondrous, whirling, spinning dream that takes you into a world that is at once fictional and all to real to anybody with an imagination and the good sense to use it. I've been through numerous copies,( and lent not a few of them out to friends, never to see them again), but that's what a great book like this does, makes the rounds and gives so much to those who have the good fortune to chance upon it. The people who inhabit the world of Strongbow, O'Sullivan Beare,Haj Harun and the rest are so alive with their dreams that they can make a lesser man feel mundane and useless. Edward Whittemore is most definitely one of, if not THE, greatest storytellers of this century. Get this book.

5 out of 5 stars An old favorite and an enthralling reading experience.......2001-08-15

Edward Whittemore wrote five novels between the years 1974 and 1987. His most important work is the Jerusalem Quartet of which Sinai Tapestry is the first volume. I first read this novel in 1979 or thereabouts and was instantly infatuated by the setting of the novels, the eccentric characters and the unusual writing style of the author. The four books which make up the Quartet treat the reader to a rather bizarre history of the Middle East.

I have re-read all of Whittemore's novels several times over the years and still find them an enjoyable and unusual reading experience. Edward Whittemore has been sadly neglected for many years and has never really received the acclaim he deserves.

Many of the other reviewers of Whittemore's novels on Amazon have bemoaned the fact that these books have been out of print for many years, hard to come by and expensive secondhand. The good news is that all of his books are about to be reissued by Old Earth Books. I have created a web page devoted to Edward Whittemore's life and work....

4 out of 5 stars A haj through desert dreams.......1999-12-16

Sinai tapestry is a dream work with very real characters. People driven by strange desires weave their lives together through two thousand years of biblical myth. Contemporory events become the fulfillment of ancient prophecies and obsessions.

I am delighted to find that Edward Whittemore finished the quartet, of which I have only read the first book. As a work of bold imagination it ranks with the best while being far more earthy than Lawrence Durrell's Alexander Quartet. I am disappointed that his books are OOP -- he is vastly under-appreciated.

                Book Description

If you like coconut, you will love this book. It's written for coconut lovers as well as for the growing number of health conscious individuals who recognize coconut as a marvelous health food.

Every recipe contains coconut in one form or another. Some recipes such as Coconut Battered Shrimp and Coconut Macaroons use shredded or flaked coconut. Others such as Chicken A La King and Strawberry Chiffon Pie use coconut milk or cream in place of dairy. The salad dressings and mayonnaise recipes are based on coconut milk and oil.

This book contains nearly 450 recipes with a mixture of both vegetarian and nonvegetarian dishes to choose from. You will find recipes for creating savory main dishes, appetizing side dishes, satisfying snacks, and nutritious beverages. You will find recipes for dairy-free smoothies and blender drinks, creamy soups and hearty chowders, delicious curries, stews, and casseroles. If you like desserts, you will find plenty here to choose from, including German Chocolate Cake, Coconut Pecan Pie, and Chocolate Almond Ice Cream.

Concerned about sugar? No problem. Every sweet or dessert recipe includes a low sugar version. These recipes use very little sugar or none at all.

Coconut is ideal for low-carbohydrate diets because it contains very little effective (i.e., digestible) carbohydrate. It consists primarily of indigestible fiber and, therefore, is a healthy and tasty low-carbohydrate, high-fiber food. The milk, cream, and oil are also low in carbohydrate and give foods a rich creamy taste and texture that is both healthy and delicious.

                3 out of 5 stars coconut lover's cookbook.......2007-02-15

I was looking for recipes using coconut flour. So I was disappointed that all the bakegoods used mostly whole wheat flour. There was not even one recipe using the coconut flour. I bought this book instead of the "cooking with coconut flour" because I thought it would have a mixture of recipes. The other recipes looked very good and I am looking forward to trying them.

                5 out of 5 stars Great recipes!.......2006-02-07

I wrote a review for his book, "cooking with coconut flour" and I had to write one for this book also. The recipes are great, easy to understand and even easier to prepare. I really enjoy his recipes and am looking foward to future cookbooks using coconut products, especially coconut flour. I love this way of eating and am happy to have recipes to make life that much easier for me.

                5 out of 5 stars Simply Delicious.......2004-11-13

I am not a gourmet cook. I like recipes without exotic ingredients and complicated processes. But I also like food that tastes GOOD. This book has it covered! If you're looking for ways to get more coconut products into your diet, this book is the one to do it. I've bought a number of other books with that purpose in mind, but the recipes called for ingredients I'd never heard of and couldn't find even in health food stores. Just as Bruce Fife has made complicated concepts on nutrition easy to understand in his other books, so he has made cooking with coconut easy for those of us who are not skilled in culinary arts. Thank you, Bruce Fife.

5 out of 5 stars Packs in both sweet and savory recipes.......2004-04-04

Fans of coconut will find Coconut Lover's Cookbook by Bruce Fife to be a compelling little guide which packs in both sweet and savory recipes for use of the coconut, from healthy blender drinks to main courses, biscuits and breads, and desserts. No photos, but the easy dishes don't require them, while the range and variety of coconut dishes will delight coconut enthusiasts.
