--Endearing story--.......2004-04-12
FRESH FROM THE COUNTRY is the story of Anna Lacey a charming young woman who is filled with anticipation as she is assigned to her very first teaching position. The story is set in England and takes place in the late 1940's or early 1950's.
Nothing is quite what Anna expected. The cozy school of her dreams turns out to be large and located in an ugly urban area. Her class is filled with 46 students, so many that a teacher has barely the time to get to know the individual children. Keeping order among the students is another difficult issue for the young teacher. Anna's other big problem is housing. Rooms to let are not abundant and she's forced to move in with Mr. & Mrs. Flynn. Her bedroom is tiny and the overall accommodations leave a lot to be desired. Mrs. Flynn is ill spirited and the meals given to Anna are miserly and tasteless. Anna does befriend two other young teachers who often invite her to tea and add a little color to her otherwise regulated life. Just getting out of Mrs. Flynn's dreary house for a few hours makes her feel better.
As the year progresses Anna learns that there is a lot more to being a teacher than she had guessed. She also realizes that she really loves teaching, but knows that she will be happiest living in the country and working in a small school. The year ends with Anna anticipating the next year, a possible romance and life in general.
There are quite a few books written by Miss Read. She has the most wonderful knack of taking what might seem a rather bland scenario and turning it into a most interesting and satisfying story. Miss Read's real name is Mrs. Dora Saint. I recommend this book for anyone, but I think it would be especially interesting for a young person who is considering a teaching career.
My absolute favorite "Miss Read" book...........2000-10-10
Culture shock was not something I'd expected to read about in this gentle story, written probably around the era of 1940s. A young girl moves from her country home to begin the life of a school teacher in a new suburb. However, her sense of fun and country standards bring her through to a new understanding at the end of her first term. Absolutely and quite simply lovely. I wish her story could go on and on.

Customer Reviews:
Hemry is Quite a Story Teller!!.......2007-07-31
As I stated in a previous review, I was introduced to Hemry's writing when I bought the first two books in his "Lost Fleet" series (under the pen name Jack Campbell) and enjoyed them so much that I had to go out and find some of his previous works. I've never been a huge fan of military science fiction, with the exception of Haldeman's books. But, I've been enjoying myself getting to know Hemry's writing. My only disappointment is that I am now finished with the "Sgt Stark" series and have to wait until later in the year for the next "Lost Fleet" installment. Overall, I'd say that each book in the "Stark" series was an improvement over the last. The final installment was a definite page-turner and the best written of the three books in the series. Well worth the time spent reading it. Highly recommend all three books.
A pleasant story.......2003-12-30
A good friend loaned me the book. At first I didn't plan to read it. The cover and comments on the back of the book indicated it was just one more book with a focus on lots of fighting. I ended up being pleasantly surprised.
This is the third and final book in a series about some Americans up on the moon. Stark leads the military and is working with American colonists. Some nasty things have been happening to them. There is lots of excitement. There is lots, and lots of fighting. We have a sneak raid, a double cross, a threat from a new deadly weapon, and an internal rebellion.
In some ways this book is similar to the Moon is a Harsh Mistress, but much more emphasis on lots of fighting, with less details about the politics and other issues of a colony on the moon.
The "lieutenant"?.......2003-01-09
Stark is a character that is tough to forget. I read this series about one year ago and was just checking for an update to see if Stark would fight again. (See, I can't forget him).
His unswerving sense of ethics and ability to keep his troops together is reminiscient of L. Ron Hubbard's Lieutenant in Final Blackout. Great characterization and a fascinating story. I will read anything that comes out by John Hemry in the future.

Hemry has what it takes to keep you glued!.......2002-05-21
I started with Stark's War, chheezy cover art and all. The story itself kept my nose glued to the book all evening. I couldn't put it down if I tried. The Third one was a fitting end to the trilogy. The storyline and plot were good, and Hemry gave his characters flesh and personality. It was more enjoyable than Tom Clancy. I am really sorry to see it end.

Yeah, what they said..........2006-03-25
A quick update for anyone interested:
This baby will probably set you back $100+, but it's included in Jeff's 'City of Saints and Madmen' for a much more reasonable price.
Illusions shattered.......1999-07-09
Dradin in love is a profoundly disturbing excavation into the destruction of one man's desires. Dradin finds more about himself than he wishes to know, with unforeseen results. The victorian ouvre of the story gives the beginning a kind of naivete, and the deconstruction of that naivete through startling revelations seems to be the driving force behind the plot. This is an excellent read, written in a style largely indistinguishable from Victorian/Edwardian novellas. The internal illustrations are excellent and add to the surreality of the story, rather than diverting attention away from the plot.
A sensitive, thoughtful and delirious fantasy........1998-06-19
I'm quite a jaded fellow when it comes to reading fantasy. I read too much of it when I was a lad. So now something has to be really special to invoke the same sense of wonder I felt as a hearty youth. Milorad Pavic can still do it, always; Italo Calvino, mostly; Jack Vance, often; Fritz Leiber, sometimes; maybe a few other names -- James Branch Cabell, Mervyn Peake, Clark Ashton Smith... and Jeff VanderMeer. He's one of the few bright lights currently burning in fantasy writing. And he's young, so whereas I'm enjoying the grave-lights or sunsets of the other figures on my list, VanderMeer is providing me with a dawn. Dradin, In Love is a superbly atmospheric work which succeeds in mapping a shadowy, almost Kafkaesque city landscape which has expelled cliche beyond the furthest suburbs. VanderMeer pulls off what I see many fantasy writers (especially here in the UK) failing to do. Yes, he's one to watch out for, and he deserves to be more widely read.
An under-read gem--You won't be disappointed.......1998-05-28
What I loved most about this short novel was not the lifelike main character or the fascinating world in which he lives, but the writing itself. The author Jeff Vandermeer is obviously a lover of words and you can tell that he pined over every one in this book. I often found myself re-reading whole sentences and paragraphs just for the appreciation. Keep an eye out for this guy.

Book Description
As Mahmood approached them, Jimmy saw what was in Mahmood's good hand. He knew what it was. Mahmood used such devices frequently on his captives and had used such a device on Jimmy before. Jimmy screamed louder in rage and frustration. I do not want that on my head. He tried to move away from Mahmood but made little progress because of the handcuffs. Mahmood reached over to try to put the device on. Jimmy bent his head away from Mahmood in order to avoid the device. Jimmy was unsuccessful and the device went on. When the sphere touched the top of his head, it flowed out in all directions, assuming a more flattened shape. It stuck to his head despite the fact that he used his free hand to try to pull it off. He started sobbing. All his movements gradually started getting slower and slower. He appeared to get weaker and weaker, which he was. The violent emotions shown on his face became more subdued. He began to get lethargic. He slowly sank to the floor.

Book Description
This comprehensive guide to farmstead cheese explains the diversity of cheeses in terms of historical animal husbandry, pastures, climate, preservation, and transport-all of which still contribute to the uniqueness of farm cheeses today. Discover the composition of milk (and its seasonal variations), starter cultures, and the chemistry of cheese. The book includes:
A fully illustrated guide to basic cheesemaking
Discussions on the effects of calcium, pH, salt, and moisture on the process
Ways to ensure safety and quality through sampling and risk reduction
Methods for analyzing the resulting composition
... The Vermont Cheese Council is a nonprofit organization whose support of more than dozen Vermont cheesemakers contributes to a vision for continued agricultural practices and the preservation of Vermont's rural landscape. For those who want to quit their boring jobs and do something that will make their lives meaningful, here's the book. Paul Kindstedt must be considered an American treasure. Of all the books in my possession, this one is now the most important.
Customer Reviews:
Great overview of business and art.......2007-09-26
We bought this book to get a better understanding of the business side of making farmstead cheeses. The book is well written and answered questions we hadn't even thought of yet. I recommend it as a must read for any one thinking of going into farmstead or artisan cheese making.
The necessary science.......2007-01-19
I bought this book as a gift for my brother, who owns a small raw-milk dairy in California & is working on making cheese from his guernseys' milk. He says it is exactly what is needed to understand the process: the chemistry of cheese.
Very technical, but quite interesting.......2006-11-03
When this book says it's the complete guide, it's not kidding. It gets into every aspect of making cheese, even the chemical science behind it. I recommend it to anyone who is seriously going into cheese-making. For others, it just might not be an easy read. This is probably a text book in a university.
Not what I expected.......2006-06-08
This book is good for what it is, but not what I expected. I was expecting to buy this book and be able to make cheese, but that's not the case.
It will definitely help the start-up cheesemaker to manage the cheesemaking process, but it does NOT include any recipes. It does not include many specific techniques for particular cheese types. It is also not really geared for very small (home) cheesemakers, but it should be a good book for small commercial cheesemakers.
Karen Darbinyan.......2006-03-01
This book is a great asset for start-up cheesemakers. I am from Aremnia and I own small new cheesemaking business. Thanks to this book many things got clear for me and my business.
Good combinition of art and science.
