Searching for truth and the meaning of frienship and life..........2005-01-22
This book was written by Sandor Marai more than 50 years ago, in Hungary, and was banned. It was then published in 1999, and in 2004, its 23rd edition was published. This itself made me pick it up. A book that has been edited 23 times in 5 years must have something.....
El Ultimo Encuentro deals with a couple of old men, who were absolutely inseparable during their younger years, and are now meeting again, after not seeing or hearing from each other in more than 40 years. The entire novel revolves around the mysterious reason why they separated.
Life, friendship, loyalty and truth are deeply explored in the meeting between these two men, who in spite of not having any type of contact in 40 years, have thought about each other every single day of their lives.
The book is beautifully written, and is very hard to put down. Two men are bearing their souls, dreams, and memories....
In some ways, El Ultimo Encuentro reminds me of Hermann Hesse's writings....
Definitely worth your time.

Book Description
The Sunderlies-for Doyce's and Jenret's sixteen-year-old twins, Jenneth and her brother Diccon, the very name is a summons to exotic adventure. So when Jenret proposes taking the family along on a business trip there, the twins can hardly contain their excitement. The only thing more thrilling is the newfound Bond Jenneth has made with the ghatten Pw'eek and Diccon with her sister ghatten Kwee. Yet, almost from the start, the journey seems overshadowed with bad luck-or evil intent. But the real disaster strikes at sea, when a storm sweeps Jenneth and Pw'eek overboard. Desperate to find his lost twin, Diccon has no way of knowing that the worst for all of them still lies ahead....
Customer Reviews:
Can't keep my interest.......2007-07-01
For some reason, Greeno starts this book off with 200 pages of complaining and self-pity that make you hate virtually every character. Well, what I imagine she's trying to do is show the tragic humanity of every character and how many complex problems they have, and the fact that they don't live happily ever after, but the effect is as I have described. Every book in the series thus far has started out this way, with Doyce feeling guilty over something stupid or being depressed or confused in some way. This is not the way to engage a reader's attention.
The action picks up a little as the book goes on, but I found myself skimming through the book to get to the dialogue and the occasional action sequences after I realized that 90 percent of the words add nothing to the story. I've read over a thousand books in my life and I've never done this before. I just can't get into the long descriptions and the narrated indecision as various characters consider whether or not they should act on information they have obtained, usually, of course, choosing not to and regretting it later.
I give this book three stars because it's not terrible but I wouldn't recommend it either. If you really like cats and own three or more, that might contribute to your enjoyment of this book. There are a lot of inside jokes for cat owners about how quirky cat personalities are. Some might find these cute; I don't.
Ghatti, continued.......2006-07-04
It starts off slowly as there's so much that has happened between the end of the last series and this one, but if you plough through it, it gets better. Not as good as the first three books, but still a worthwhile read as you are already involved with the characters.
Not as good as the rest of the series.......2005-11-30
Although I love the ghatti series, this generation of characters just isn't as interesting. Diccon doesn't seem to do much and Jenneth really annoyed me...having her lose her memory was also cliched and one would think her Bondmate would still be able to reach her. Let's hope the characters grow up a bit more and acquire some dimension in future books
The best of the series yet!.......2000-08-30
Gayle Greeno has outdone herself in this book. It is a real page-turner! We enjoyed the first three books, the Gatti trilogy, but the first Gatten book is the best yet of the series. Doyce has retired from position as Seeker General and accompanies her husband and children on a trip to the Sunderlies. On the way to the seaport to catch their ship to the Sunderlies, it becomes apparent that someone is trying to sabotage their trip. On the sea, there are further problems which include one of Doyce and Jenret's twins and her bond being swept off of the ship in a great storm. There is intrigue all through the book and the author doesn't give away who are the good guys and who are the bad guys until the end of the book.
Wonderfuld book and worthy successor to "The Ghatti's Tale".......2000-08-18
A must read for anyone who enjoyed "The Ghatti's Tale" trilogy or someone looking for something new and different.
Starting sixteen years after "Exiles' Return", Doyce Marborn's and Jenret Wycherley's marrage is on shakey ground. On their twins, Diccon and Jenneth, sixteeth birthday, Doyce resigns as Seeker General and announces she will join her husband and children on their trip to Sunderlies.
The Sunderlies: land of exiled outlaws and those seeking a new life. This land is very different from mainland Canderis.
As the large party travels to port to leave for the Sunderlies, there are mishaps. Accidents or sabotage? Questions abond. While waiting for the ship to be readied, the twins are Chosen by young twin Ghatten. Diccon by Kwee and Jenneth by fat, shy Pw'eek.
On the sea trip to the Sunderlies, trouble strikes. Jenneth and Pw'eek are sweept overboard during a storm.
But this is only the tip of Greeno's masterpiece. For the Whycherley trade in the Sunderlies is being drained, very slightly, of its funds. There are old wrongs that fanatics feel must be revenged. Plus, there is political intrique to boot. The question becomes who will survive the voyage.
Greeno does a wonderful job of filling story with familiar chacters from the first trilogy and a slew of new characters from the Sunderlies.

Love It!!.......2007-10-01
I first read this book when I was a child. I loved it. I checked it out of my schools library so many times they let me just keep it till the end of the school year. The story line and the people themselves are so hard to put down. The mythology in the book made me look into the shinto myths. I would recommend this book to anyone. I am twenty six now and still love this book!!
Finally we have the book in print........2007-07-10
I am so happy that the book was brought back in print by Viz. I have been waiting for this book for a really long time. After I saw it on an English book of literature I wanted to have it. But when I learned that it was out of print and that it was on Amazon for more than $3oo dollars I was devastated, and I hoped that some day it would be back in print. I had to settle for the copies that were on my public library. But I really wanted to have my very own copy as well as the sequels of the book. So I remained patient and waited and finally it was brought back. I cannot wait to get my copy and hopefully I will also see the sequels also translated. But in the mean time I will enjoy this book first.
definitely a must-read!.......2006-06-16
this book is amazing and i loved it! i read it in junior high, too, and i wish it would be back in print. i definitely cannot buy it for $200! this book is amazing with its details and dialogue and interesting adventures that happen! and the innocent mind of chihaya is definitely attractive and also his unknown power over the dragon sword is so alluring. this historical fairytale is the best i've ever read! it keeps you reading and your heart thumping in anxiety over what will occur next.
So Sad, yet Beautiful .......2006-01-26
I agree with the other reviewers, this book NEEDS to be back in print. I read it in junior high and was extremely enchanted! I quickly passed it to my mother and told friends about it; its just so lovely, though occassionally sad.
I really can't say much that hasn't been said, but if anyone who has power reads this- LET'S GET THIS BOOK BACK IN PRINT!! (I can't afford a $200 book on a college students pay...)
A book of transcendant beauty..........2005-08-24
I agree with one of the former reviewers here that it is indeed a tragedy that this book is out of print. It belongs with the other classics of high fantasy and allegory that have been reprinted thousands of times throughout the years.
The subtlety of the descriptions and development in this book is pure magic, the best I have ever seen. Everything moves so fluidly --the plot, the scenes, and the characters develop gradually but smoothly and completely-- that I can only think that if a beautiful water-color painting could have a written form, this would be it. This book must have been very skillfully translated from its original Japanese, because never in the English language have I found such images before. While this book does entertain as well, and ends, against all odds, happily, it transcends many other books because it does not simply touch the mind or emotions. There is something spiritual about it, something that touches that part of each of us that is truly alive and connected to the life all around us. Not only does it touch it, but it opens our eyes to that connection. That alone makes this book worth reading. I wish there were more books like it.

Fast-paced and exciting read.......2006-05-16
I really enjoyed this book -- reading it in 2 days. The message is worthwhile, and the plot moves along quickly.
Winds of Evil Review.......2005-08-04
I thought that Winds of Evil was really good. I liked the characters, they were interesting and all of them had some type of a dark past. I really enjoyed the plot, as well. It was a little scary thinking about demons really trying to take over the world, or even just a little town like Eden. But I like that this is a strong book of faith, and that the author shows that. No matter what happens, we must always trust in God. I give the book a three, because I like the characters and plot, though there are some parts that still confuse me.
No surprises here.......2005-05-15
Everything in the book is flat and over used. Characters lack any dimesion and are very predictable. Katherine returns to Eden after her aunt's unexpected death. She finds something evil had taken root in Eden. She accepts this very easily for someone that has "drifted" in her walk with God. Of course, you have your steadfast pastor, Enoch Jones. He remains faithful in situations that would send most quaking, where does his deep faith come from??? Only the author knows and she isn't telling. The bad people are bad and the good people are good. The story offers no twist or unexpected "gottcha's". Even the development of the romance between Katherine and her old college beau is flat.
Suspenseful and page-turning.......2005-02-21
Sharon Gilbert does an incredible job in developing this action-packed series (The Laodicea Chronicles) in book 1 'The Winds of Evil'. Like best-selling authors Frank Peretti or Stephen King, Sharon Gilbert unfolds this story in tangibly vivid detail.
Customer Reviews:
My favourite Bony book........1999-03-29
The Winds of Evil is Arthur Upfield at his best. We have Detective-Inspector Napolean Bonaparte using his bush skills and his brain. We have a plot where it isn't obvious "whodunnit". And we have the benefit of Upfield's gift for describing the town, the surroundings, and the winds of evil themselves, as evidenced in the opening pages. This is definitely my favourite so far of all of the Arthur Upfield books that I've read.
Book Description
The Dark Wind provides a survey of witches around the world, their prehistoric origin and how society has viewed them throughout history. Folklorist Gary R. Varner explores the use of magic, spells and curses among indigenous groups as well as state approved religions such as those observed in ancient Rome and Greece, and how even contemporary Christianity uses many of the same "magic" combinations. Also examined is the current "witch craze" in several countries where thousands are being killed as witches, the underlying reasons for this tragedy and the history of anti-witchcraft laws. The Dark Wind is a book for everyone interested in anthropology, archaeology, ancient history, religion and the occult. Illustrated with contemporary woodcuts and drawings. The author is a member of the American Folklore Society and the Foundation for Mythological Studies.

Book Description
Why does the gnostic Sophia appear so suddenly and gloriously in The Rebel Angels? Why is the portrait of the morphine-addicted pedophile in World of Wonders so convincing and chilling? From what source springs a notion of malice so deep that it presents a mother reaching beyond the grave to lay "the dead hand" on her dutiful son in A Mixture of Frailties? What accounts for the many happy outcomes in the novels of a man who portrays evil so uncompromisingly and unrelentingly? The answer to these questions lies in the unorthodox religious vision of Robertson Davies.
All of Davies's novels are redolent with ingeniously used biblical references and quotations. Catching the Wind in a Net traces the evolution of Davies's religious views and their influence on his novels. Dave Little's study examines Davies's provocative and sometimes conflicting notions of a supreme being. This book places Davies's frequent calls for self-exploration and self-discovery within a theological framework, and since we live in an age in which, according to Davies, "the biblical culture scarcely exists," Catching the Wind in a Net includes a useful appendix that identifies the biblical quotations and allusions present in his novels.

Customer Reviews:
my most-used cookbook........2007-08-23
We've all got a bunch of cookbooks, but how many do you keep coming back to? How many are getting so beat up from use that you've got to handle it carefully to keep it from falling apart? For me, it's this book. This is great food you can count on. Some reviewers seem to think it's too advanced or uses hard-to-find ingredients. Huh? I bought this book when it first came out and I'm telling you, it's never let me down - better structure than his next one, easier to get around in. We just made the chicken pot pies - my only criticism is Tyler's use of puff pastry - try using a lard/butter crust and you'll happier; more flavor - but his chicken tastes great.
While I love Tyler and his cooking..........2006-12-16
This book was a little too advanced for me. I enjoy all of Tyler's shows and the recipes he presents on the Food Network - I have made several. This book, while written beautifully, uses too many rare ingredients that I simply can't FIND in my town! The concept of the recipes is fine - he explains all techniques perfectly, but even at our "gourmet" supermarket here in town, I know I can't find lemon grass or foie gras.
However, like I said, this book is presented beautifully. The introduction alone would make a great book. Tyler goes through important cookware to have, different price ranges of said cookware, different spices that you should have to create Spanish, Italian, Asian, etc recipes and other very basic guidelines to get your kitchen stocked and ready to cook! So, he still deserves four stars for this part of the book.
This Book Is A Huge Surprise!.......2006-08-01
To me, next to Ina Garten's Barefoot Contessa, Tyler's Ultimate is the best show on FOOD NETWORK. Don't know why it took me so long to purchase one of his cookbooks. But really worth the wait! You see a young Tyler in the photos, but the recipes are mature, well thought out, and beautifully photographed. This little treasure has something for everyone's tastebuds. The beauty of this book is that almost every one of the recipes are easy enough for me to make. And believe me, that is saying something. While Mr. Florence and I hail from the South, I will never know my way around food, cooking and the kitchen the way he does. I wish I had purchased this book earlier. As soon as the temperature drops below 100 degrees this week here in NYC, (not soon it appears) I am hittin' the kitchin' (Southern for kitchen) for some terrific Tyler recipes! BUY THIS BOOK!!!
Reluctant to Try Another Recipe.......2006-04-23
I really enjoy watching Tyler Florence on the Food Network, and the other recipes of his that I've tried from the Food Network website have turned out well. However, I've just finished making the Arroz con Pollo recipe in this book, and I'm so annoyed that I had to write. The cookbook really could've used more careful editing. The rice to liquid ratio was so off that the rice ended up a gloppy mess. I know I shouldn't have followed the recipe blindly, since if I had stopped to think about it for a second, I would've realized that there was no way that the proportions were correct, especially when compared with the Arroz con Pollo recipe on Epicurious.com. What's even more frustrating is that the flavors of the dish were excellent, and the dish had the potential to be outstanding. Thus, I'm wary of trying another recipe in the book, but if I do, I'll be a lot less blindly trusting.
Inspiring, unpretentious cooking.......2005-11-29
Simply put, this book is the reason I enjoy cooking today.
Other reviewers have claimed, correctly, that the ingredients may be difficult to find for certain recipes, or that the instructions may occasionally be complicated, even confusing.
These claims are true, but I want to say as respectfully and humbly as I possibly can that these reviewers may be missing the point of Tyler's cooking, which is to create a child-like (and I mean that in a very positive way) curiosity and passion for food, and to make meals that are so delicious that you'll forget your own name while savoring the flavors.
Tyler cooks for excellence. He doesn't want to make just pork chops; he wants to make the best pork chops you've ever had in your life. And the recipe in this book, "Thick Pork Chops with Spiced Apples and Raisins," will make the best pork chops you've ever had in your life, guaranteed.
The recipes are hard but far from impossible; some of them are time-consuming, but over time they get easier and easier. I don't even need to look at the recipe for the pork chops any more, and considering how many ingredients there are, that's an accomplishment.
But that's the beauty of these recipes - they're so consistently excellent that you'll keep coming back for more, and as you do, you'll start picking up the little things that make up each flavor, and before you even realize it, you'll find yourself a better cook than you ever were before, excited about food rather than just stuffing something down your throat three times a day.
Before I read this book, I couldn't tell the difference between thyme and sage, or anything else leafy and green. Now I don't even have to look; my nose can tell the difference immediately.
Again, I don't mean any disrespect to the other reviewers who didn't care for this book, because it isn't for everybody. But if you want to be genuinely excited about dinner again, or if you want to inspire a really healthy love for food amongst your friends and family, then I recommend this book. Tyler loves food because he loves life, and it shows.
