Book Description

Set in the projects of Los Angeles, California, Edgewater Angels chronicles the adolescence of Sunny Toomer, a streetwise young man endlessly sandwiched between the right and wrong thing to do. In a neighborhood where an absentminded stare might be mistaken for a silent challenge for turf, and asking someone if they have a problem may cost you your life, Sunny ekes out survival amidst an incomparable cast of characters, including a husbandless mother, violence-prone uncles, and a cadre of strangely endearing men either headed for jail or out on parole. Written in original riff-like prose, Meallet gives us a unique story that is serious yet playful, daring in aim, and absolutely captivating.

a tale about boys for a new era-- true, funny, gripping

4 out of 5 stars A Must Read for people who grew up in the ghetto.......2004-09-16

I read Edgewater Angels for my college english class and was surprised by how good it was. The book was written with a sincere tone. The character Sunny is a boy who becomes a man by entering a series of rites of passages the "ghetto" way. From violence to learning about the birds and the bees, Toomer experiences everything. In the end, he learns the true meaning of life.

I highly recommend this book to everyone.

4 out of 5 stars The Good and the Bad of Edgewater Angels.......2004-01-28

Edgewater Angels, the novel of Sunny Toomer tells of his life experiences at the age of about 12. Toomer lives in the projects of San Pedro, and this is where he evolves from a boy to a man. His expereines such as watching a murder, or living with a trouble family make Sunny strong and realize that the things that others tell you, are not always right. The bad thing of the novel would be its overuse of hyphenated adjectives, but from there on, everything is all good. Good Novel.

4 out of 5 stars Edgewater Angels.......2004-01-20

I was very excited to read Edgewater Angels because I enjoy reading fiction novels that relate to kids my age. I was also excited because the story took place in Pedro. I recommend Edgewater Angels to all high school students because it will give them a chance to see how hard life was growing up in Pedro. Before I read this book, I really didn't care about what happens or goes on in Pedro. I just thought half of it was a very wealthy neighborhood where I attended school. Edgewater Angels made me see how hard life can be as a child growing up in a bad neighborhood. And it made me realize that my life compared to Sonny's isn't that hard. I now appreciate my surroundings more because now I see how it is to not have them.

4 out of 5 stars Disturbing yet accurate.......2004-01-14

It is hard to believe that a child can go through so many dramas at such a young age. Sunny Toomer witnessed a tremendous amount of violence that no one should have to experience. I never knew San Pedro had that much violence. Even though some of the stories in the book were disturbing, like the one where Angel and Yancey cut the hitchhikers finger off, the book was still really good. He had an interesting life. My favorite story was the last story when Sunny helped deliever the baby. I felt that the birth of the child was a great way to end the novel.

Book Description

This is the third volume of the History of Middle-earth, which comprises here-tofore unpublished manuscripts that were written over a period of many years before Tolkien's Simlarillion was published. Volumes 1 and 2 were the Book of Lost Tales, Part One and The Book of Lost Tales, Part Two. Together, these volumes encompass an extraordinarily extensive body of material ornamenting and buttressing what must be the most fully realized world ever to spring from a single author's imagination.
"I write alliterative verse with pleasure," wrote J.R.R. Tolkien in 1955, "though I have published little beyond the fragments in The Lord of the Rings, except The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth." The first of the poems in The Lays of Beleriand is the previously unpublished Lay of the Children of Hurin, his early but most sustained work in the ancient English meter, intended to narrate on a grand scale the tragedy of Turin Turambar. It was account of the killing by Turin of his friend Beleg, as well as a unique description of the great redoubt of Nargothrond.
The Lay of the Children of Hurin was supplanted by the Lay of Leithian, "Release from Bondage", in which another major legend of the Elder Days received poetic form, in this case in rhyme. The chief source of the short prose tale of Beren and Luthien is The Silmarillion.
This, too, was not completed, but the whole Quest of the Silmaril is told, and the poem breaks off only after the encounter with Morgoth in his subterranean fortress. Many years later, when The Lord of the rings was finished, J.R.R. Tolkien returned to the Lay of Leithian and started on a new version, which is also given in this book.
Accompanying the poems are commentaries on the evolution of the history of the Elder Days, which was much developed during the years of the composition of the two Lays. Also included is the notable criticism in detail of the Lay of Lethian by C.S. Lewis, Tolkien's friend and colleague, who read the poem in 1929. By assuming that this poem is actually a fragment from a past lost in history, Lewis underlined the remarkable power of its author's imaginative talents and academic competence.

More dull Tolkienness. Fairly obvious attempt at publishing
commercialism. However, the author put a ton of work into his
background, history, languages, songs, poetry, and other works to do
with his books, so if any of those worlds are deserving of having their
backstory detailed in excruciating detail and 400 volumes, this is
probably one.

5 out of 5 stars Not just poetry, but an epic saga.......2006-08-25

When I read LotR, or The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, Tolkien's poetry didn't seem to me good enough. That is, I liked those verses, but I thought them too plain for those from an epic saga. Now this book is quite another. The Lay of Leithian is a most romantic story of love-and-adventure (the corresponding chapter in the Silmarillion describes the same events much simpler), and in the poem about Thurin, we get to know some missing details of his story. So, if you're interested in the First Age events and personalities, this book is a very good reading for you.

If you are a tolkien lover, poetry lover, or both like me then you will get the awesome experience of reading some of the origins of turin, beren, etc. There are not a lot of poems and they are all unfinished. But there are things in this book which you will treasure forever like the hate filled words spoken to eachother by morgoth and hurin. Just like tolkiens original writings in book 1 and 2, # 3 will show you more of the origins of where his silmarillion derived from. Christopher explains later in the series of these books on how he used the lost tales, lays, and annals to finish the silmarillion for his father. Let me explain that the lost tales came 1st, lays 2nd, and then the annals. Since these are all different versions of ALL the tales Christopher would be the judge of what parts of what tale or lay would be published in the silmarillion. So essentially just to use turin as an example, Christopher is telling one tale, but basically trying to put a puzzle together mxing AND matching different parts of different versions of the tale. It sounds like an extremely difficult process.

Everybody gives credit to tolkien for making the lord of the rings his lifes work, but his son seeds to be equally credited for putting the time in to analyze and even try to think for his father, adn since Christopher was the main reviewer of the pre-published lord, I am very, very appreciative of the fact that he decided to make this his lifes work.

Again thank you Christopher tolkien for making all of your father's works available.

4 out of 5 stars Fantasy for Adults! Poetry Corner. .......2005-06-22

`The Lays of Beleriand' by J. R. R. Tolkien, edited by son, Christopher Tolkien is by far the most obscure and difficult yet of the postumous volumes starting with `The Silmarillion' and continuing with `Unfinished Stories' and `The Book of Lost Tales'. This is Volume III of `The History of Middle Earth' which will grow to twelve (12) volumes, to be completed by the editor, after almost twenty years, just before the release of the first of the three `The Lord of the Rings' movies in 2001.

From my brief examination of later `History' volumes, I suspect this may actually be the most difficult of them all. For starters, all the original material is in verse. And, with a very few exceptions, Tolkien was not a very good poet. I am not an accomplished critic of poetry, but my exposure to the epic verse of the ancients, Shakespeare, and modern `epic' poets such as Ezra Pound (`The Cantos') leads me to say that Tolkien, in these works, was primarily writing for himself and a very small circle of philologists and colleagues such as C. S. Lewis, with whom Tolkien created the club, The Inklings, who dwelled on such writings.

Even an ardent Tolkien fan could be excused for passing by this volume, as most of the substance of the long poems is repeated in prose, primarily in `The Silmarillion'. However, before giving up on it entirely, I suggest the reader sample some of the Cantos herein to see if the sense they give of the magical elven land of Beleriand may just be a bit more than what you get in the prose stories.

I am constantly amazed, in looking through this history, at how much of this was written in the 1920s and early 1930s, before even starting on `The Hobbit'. I am also thankful to Tolkien's primary publisher, Stanley Unwin, for pushing for another work including hobbits. Of all of Tolkien's writings, the tales in this book and all the stories between the time the Noldor left the undying lands and the sinking of Beleriand after the last battle with Morgoth tend to leave me pretty cold. They just seem to have none of the zip of the story beginning with the founding of Numenor. Leading to the wars against Sauron and the stories surrounding the rings of power.

This volume is composed of multiple versions of two major poems, `The Lay of the Children of Hurin' and `The Lay of Leithian', both of which involve the conflict between the elves of Beleriand and Morgoth. I have read both and find little about which to get excited unless you are a serious language junkie. Unfortunately, my interest in language is based more on semantics than on philology, so I am more in tune to the linguistic tricks of Lewis Carroll than to Tolkien's inventions.

But, if you love invented languages or you are a serious Tolkien trivia maven, this book is definitely for you.

David Drake writes military science fiction like no one else, and this novel is one of the best examples of why. It has large quantities of intense action, character development under fire, and a mass of memorable characters.

In many ways the book is what a Slammers' story would be like if you boiled it down to the essentials and then escalated the action another notch.

I am a big fan of the Hammer's Slammers series and have enjoyed some of Mr. Drake's other books, but this was not his best effort. The premise was good but the book never grabbed me. It was a Fair book at best.

Of all the Drake books, this one is 2nd only to Redliners, in showing the spirit of a unit that has endured danger, hardship and boredom and responds with courage and ingenuity when faced with a desparate situation. The state employing the unit is losing to the other side, and plans to sell them out. They are trapped, all hands are turning against them, and their captain has been betrayed and murdered. A young officer of the local army, unpopular with his own brass due to his distain of corruption, joins the unit. His leadership and the unit's deadly skills give them a fighting chance to survive.

David Drake is justly famous for his Hammer's Slammers stories, but this one-off novel dealing with another mercenary company is actually his best work of military SF. With enough hard-core action to satisfy anyone, it also manages to probe the question of what it means to be REALLY, REALLY good at killing people.

                                Book Description

"Forlorn Hope" is a term that dates to the Revolutionary War or earlier. It means to send a small group of men, usually soldiers, on a desperate, possibly suicidal, mission.

On a June morning in 1877, 109 soldiers and civilian volunteers rode into White Bird Canyon in the Idaho Territory. They planned to launch a surprise attack on a band of Nez Perce Indians camped in the canyon. In the encounter that followed, a numerically inferior force of Nez Perce warriors inflicted a defeat on the soldiers more complete than the one suffered the previous year by the Seventh Cavalry at the Little Bighorn. The battle at White Bird Canyon was the spark that ignited a four-month, 1,200-mile trek that ended in tragedy for the tribe that only seventy years earlier had saved Lewis and Clark from starvation.

Published in a limited edition in 1978, Forlorn Hope was named by Indian wars historians as one of the best books ever written on the Nez Perce War. It provides an easy-to-read snapshot of the politics and people involved in a unique chapter in the history of Idaho and the American West.

The story opens almost like a typical western movie where a tribe of Indians is wronged by whites and retaliation starts slow by a few angry young men who turn vengeance into a small scale war. The author tells the story of the Nez Perce and the ranchers who live side by side so well that the reader literally cringes when three young tribes men decide to retaliate against any white that mistreated them as they are being forced to accept another move off of their land. The initial phase of the book tells a thrilling and frightening story as each ranch or store is subject to attack as each set of occupants is isolated. After securing more tribesmen, the young Nez Perce drive most of the whites to the frayed security of small towns. Requiring a demonstration of force, General Howard sends an ill prepared set of cavalry companies in pursuit of the Nez Perce along with civilian volunteers. the result is a force of over 100 men meeting the Nez Perce in a rugged canyon that causes a total loss of coordination between the two companies particularly after the civilians give way. The battle quickly turns into a route with a series of short and isolated rallies resulting in one officer abandoning the field, one leading a platoon into a ravine of death and the commander doing his best to stem the tide of panic but eventually giving up the field. The terrain and the riding and fighting ability of the Nez Perce successfully defends Chief Joseph's initial flight. The small book does not complete the campaign but familiarizes the reader with one of the greatest plains disaster for the US Military after Little Big Horn and the Fetterman Massacre. The book includes a transcript of the investigative hearing which is interesting since the officer that abandoned the field attempts to press charges of incompetence against his field commander. I only wish the lone battle map was clearer since the terrain is confusing and the battle description could utilize a more simple map to show movements on the field. The author gives you a good feel for what the conditions and participants were like using first hand testimonies that start each new chapter and you experience the story unfolding virtually as the ranchers saw it and as the soldiers and participants may have seen it from their own point of view.

Forlorn Hope: The Nez Perce Victory At White Bird Canyon is the true story of one of the worst defeats that the American military encountered during the Indian wars. The Nez Perce won a victory at White Bird Canyon that raised their hopes of keeping their homeland, and led to a four-month, 1,000-mile running battle that came to an end with Chief Joseph's surrender at Bear Paw, Montana, only 100 miles from safety. Presenting the White Bird Canyon battle from both Indian and white points of view, Forlorn Hope is a well-researched, riveting account of a landmark event of the western Indian wars.

The Battle of White Bird Canyon at the beginning of the Nez Perce War ("Chief Joseph's War") was an intense and unusual fight that confounded the U.S. Army's expectations of how Indians fought. McDermott's _Forlorn Hope_ was a thorough and perceptive study of the battle that did and can serve as a model for writing on Indian wars engagements. The style is clear, the subject interesting, and the maps are unusually good. Unfortunately, the old hardcover edition has been getting harder and harder to locate. Having this reprint come out--and at an affordable price--is very good news. Dr. Michael A. Hughes, Founding Editor, Journal of the Indian Wars.

John McDermott's FORLORN HOPE on the White Bird Canyon battle was originally published in 1978 by the Idaho Historical Society, 101 years after the battle. McDermott does an excellent job of recounting in an engaging way the events prior to the battle, the actual engagement itself, and its aftermath. Each chapter is preceded by a page entitled "What They Said" that contains direct quotes from participants in the events subsequently described. Indeed, this reliance on original sources throughout is a noteworthy attribute of this fine book.

The battle at White Bird Canyon heralded the opening of the Nez Perce War, resulting in a stunning defeat for two companies of the First cavalry sent out to interdict the Nez Perce, some of whom had killed white men, women, and children as the result of rising tensions described in the first chapter of the book. The military was totally unprepared for the fighting ability of their foe. The author examines the charges of cowardice leveled at Captain David Perry of the First Cavalry but personally feels there were other factors at work in the defeat other than the perceived failing of the senior officer in charge. These reasons are described in a chapter near the end of the book that I found to be most useful in their application to not only this battle but other engagments in the Indian Wars. Among his conclusions:
*The loss of trumpets left the cavalry companies unable to communicate effectively in a way that would have stemmed the panic retreat of many of the enlisted men (A similar problem beset G Troop of the 7th Cavalry when Reno ordered their departure from the Valley fight portion of the Little Big Horn battle).
*Judgment-Perry allowed armed citizen volunteers to occupy a piece of high ground guarding his flank. When these citizens quickly fled the fight, the Indians began to outflank the troops, contributing to their fearful and disorganized retreat.
*The troopers (many were urban recruits) were poorly trained in both horsemanship and marksmanship, unlike their Nez Perce foe to whom using guns and horses came quite naturally. It should be noted that the 1873 Springfield Trapdoor carbine (the same weapon that many like to blame for Custer's defeat the preceding year) is described by the author as "the best military rifle in the world." The problem with the weapon was that those who were trying to use it did not know how to do so effectively. One non-commissioned officer who survived the White Bird Canyon recalled that many of the pieces were rusty and foul, thereby degrading their effectiveness before the poorly trained troopers could even attempt to fire them. Furthermore, at one point in the battle, the troopers attempted to fire their weapons while MOUNTED, a difficult proposition for the even the best trained troopers, which these men were not.
*Perry underestimated the ability of his foe. It must be remembered that in this battle, as well as those such as the Little Big Horn, the soldiers lost in large measure due to the fighting ability of their foes.

The author has included thirty pages of the 1878 Court of Inquiry testimony from the inquiry convened to investigate Perry. The court ruled in his favor, that no further adjudication (i.e.,a court-martial) was necessary. This section will be very helpful to those who thrive on unedited first hand accounts. In all, an excellent book that includes numerous photographs of battle participants.

Forlorn Hope is a remarkable narrative of a single man's voyage of discovery. It chronicles the intriguing life of Adam Elesko, a one time university professor, who is dragged into a war of ideologies and ignorance. While straining to uphold his own nation's ideological dogma, he fights across a continent of desolate and bloody battlefields in a war of impossibilities. After his first experience in battle, it becomes clear that this is not simply a war of conflicted adversaries, but one of contrasted ideas and segregated thoughts, and Adam finds himself in the center of it all. He is a man whose destiny is tenuously balanced between his sense of loyalty and his demons, both of which eat away at his soul and begin to destroy not only him but those who he loves. This is a tale of a crusade, of human nature and those conflicted ideologies that rule us all, and is set across an inspired landscape of adventure, hatred, insanity and devotion.

As an individual who loves to read a good book, I sometimes find it difficult to discover a new and or unusual tale. Many of todays books seem to be no more than old stories rewritten for today's audience. I have a hard time finding those either interesting or worth my time and money. A friend suggested that I try this novel. I had never heard of the author but she said it would be worth my time and she gave me a copy. She said she knew the author and he was looking for individuals to read and give feed back.
I took the novel, spent a few days reading and a few more trying to figure out what I had read and discovered that this story is both complex and wonderful. there are some many things happening on so many levels that I was blown away. The imagery was the most amazing part. Each scene was a picture in words and I found myself more than once caught up imagining the view in my head and not reading the page.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in something new and different.

(note: rating is actually 4.5) I absolutely fell in love with Forlorn Hope when I first read it several years. It is such a hard to book to find, probably due to a lack of popularity. But, as a "spare time writer", I can tell you that many books go that route. You miss out on a lot of golden books in stores by going for big name authors (i.e. Michael Crichton and Stephen King). This is one of those books. It absolutely was a blast, and I've gotten many of my friends to read it. They enjoyed it as well. (another note: it's only 4.5 because he hasn't written the sequels to Forlorn Hope!)

Nigella Bites--the title is taken from Nigella Lawson's Style Network cooking show of the same name--is the third book from British Vogue food editor and New York Times food columnist Nigella Lawson, a force of nature all her own. Her other books include How to Eat and How to Be a Domestic Goddess. Fans of the TV show will find all these easy-to-follow recipes familiar, and the book is even designed with pages for note taking at the end of each section.

Nigella Bites is divided into chapters that include "All-Day Breakfast," "Comfort Food," "TV Dinners," "Party Girl," "Rainy Days," "Trashy," "Legacy," "Suppertime," "Slow-Cooked Weekend," and "Templefood." "Templefood" refers to the "body as a temple," and Lawson shares what she calls "restorative" recipes, like the raw egg and brandy hangover cure called Prairie Oyster. Hot and Sour Soup and Gingery Hot Duck Salad are also present and accounted for.

It's all self-referential. Lawson (her chapter introductions are printed in 26-point type for the hard of seeing) holds nothing back about what she likes, how she overindulges, how she works her lifestyle into the kitchen and onto the table. It's encouragement by example, with a practical twist. You aren't going to spend hours in the kitchen midweek. That's a reward you save for the weekend. But there's plenty of deliciousness to be had midweek as well, and Lawson's there to help you along your way. --Schuyler Ingle

I own several of Nigella's cookbooks and this one has some great recipes, like the chocolate cloud cake, ham and coca-cola and chocolate-lime cheesecake. But I have had really bad luck with some too. The Southern Style Fried Chicken recipe calls for you to poach the chicken first, which I found overcooks it and leaves you with soggy not crispy chicken in the end. A lot of the desserts are overly sweetened with sugar and I had to cut back on it. Some of the cakes are dry too. I am happy that there are so many gorgeous pics of the dishes so I know what the end result should be. Icould live without the multiple pics of her, though I know that helps the books sell. I also enjoyed reading her short little introductions to almost each recipe. I'd recommend this, but only as a used item to save some $ for more consistently good cookbooks.

3 out of 5 stars Love Nigella but..........2007-05-12

I own almost every one of her books, all have decent recipes, some more than others. You either love her writing style or you don't. I do. Much is left to your own interpretations. If I were to recommend a Nigella must have it would be Feast and Domestic Goddess. I cannot count the times I have made the granola and fairy cakes recipes from those volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Fun recipes to share with friends & family, esp if you love Nigella.......2006-12-15

If you're a fan of Nigella's show, either the British version, or the American import, you will love this cookbook. A lot of the recipes come directly from the tv episodes. The cookbook is lined with great chapter intros that share a bit more about what makes Nigella tick.

I think I speak for all Nigella fans when I say we are 50% drawn to her recipes, and 50% drawn to Nigella herself, the way she cooks effortlessly, without worry or want, or her perspectives in life, which remind us to cherish time with friends and family, and not to sweat it in the kitchen.

I've purchased a number of Nigella cookbooks, and this one has the most post-it sticky notes coming out of it!

I know you'll enjoy this cookbook as much as me!

                                4 out of 5 stars Comfort Cooking........2006-10-20

I love to cook and I have an absolute fetish for cookbooks. This one satisfied those loves perfectly. I've tried about five of the recipes so far and they are wonderful, probably because her recipes make no attempts at being low-fat or healthy. I love her writing about the food--it's down-to-earth, sexy, and practical. The photography is gorgeous and the layout of the book into categories like "Party Girl," "Comfort Food", etc give the book added character instead of the regular divisions like "Starters," "Desserts," etc. This book isn't for the constant health food fiend, or even for the beginning cook (though the recipes really aren't difficult, some are quite involved).
