In 1988, French novelist Patrick Modiano happened upon a notice in a 1941 Paris newspaper placed by the parents of a 15-year-old Jewish girl, Dora Bruder, who had disappeared from the Catholic boarding school where she was being hidden. The notice stuck in Modiano's memory, and it launched him on a quest for information about the girl's life that resulted in Dora Bruder. Modiano's lengthy investigation turned up only tiny scraps of information about Dora--but every scrap made the mystery of her disappearance more haunting. Most strikingly, Modiano found her name on a list of Jews deported from Paris to Auschwitz in 1942. "It takes time for what has been erased to resurface," Modiano explains. "It took me four years to discover her exact date of birth: 25 February 1926. And a further two years to find out her place of birth: Paris, 12th arondissement. But I am a patient man. I can wait for hours in the rain." Eventually Modiano's search forces him to come to terms with his own difficult adolescence. Yet this book defies categorization in both history and memoir. It is something more complex, and harder--a poetic acknowledgment and a philosophical refutation of common and terrifying human fates: being isolated, forgotten, and lost. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
In 1988 Patrick Modiano stumbled across an ad between the stock market report and a story of a school visit to Maréchal Pétain in the personal columns of Paris Soir from December 31, 1941: "We are looking for a young girl, Dora Bruder, 15 years old, five feet tall, round face, gray-brown eyes, gray sportscoat, burgundy pullover, navy blue hat and skirt, brown athletic shoes. Send all information to Mr. and Mrs. Bruder, 41, Boulevard Ornano, Paris."
Placed by the parents of a 15-year-old Jewish girl who had run away from her convent school just before New Year's Eve, this ad set Modiano on a quest to find out everything he could about Dora Bruder and why she ran away from the Catholic boarding school that had been hiding her. He found only one other official mention of her name: on a list of Jews deported from Paris to Auschwitz in September 1942.
With no knowledge of Dora Bruder aside from these two records of disappearances, Modiano continued to dig for fragments from Dora's past. What little he found in official records or through remaining family members, Modiano transforms into a meditation on the immense losses of the period--lost people, lost stories, and lost history. As he tries to find connections to Dora, Modiano delivers a moving account of the ten-year investigation that took him back to the sights and sounds of Paris under the Occupation and the paranoia of the Pétain regime. In his efforts to exhume her from the past, Modiano realizes that he must come to terms with the specters of his own troubled adolescence. The result is a montage of creative and historical material that unfolds as a moving rumination on loss.
Customer Reviews:
it's not the best book Modiano wrote.......1999-06-18
Apparently "Dora Bruder" is the only novel by Patick Modiano available on your site. It's too bad because it's not, by far, his best book. If you haven't tried this author before you won't be too disappointed. Otherwise you'll probably have the feelind of reading something you've read before ! Anyway Modiano is a very good French writer. He's furthermore very easy to read in French. If you are interested, I would recommend "Rue des boutiques obscures" or the very poetic "Dimanches d'Aout" (sorry I don't know the their title in English).

Where's the plot?.......2004-11-08
This book, although it had some value, was somewhat confusing. You'd think if the book was entitled "Dora Bruder" there would be more information on her yet he spends much of his time talking about random aspects of World War II. For someone who maybe has an extensive knowledge or interest in the subject this book may have more value that it had to me. However, it was a fairly simple read and was interesting in the sense that you realize how many millions of untold stories of WWII there are. Other than that, I wouldn't really recommend this book.

More than believable.......2006-02-19
Set in a Norsh style ice age all three books just keep on giving. action ,adventure ,romance. plot twists. the setings and story lines are more believable than most ancient religons or mythology's. The characters will soon feel like you're best friends. seamless transitions between books . the longest I have ever gone without sleep was with my nose buried in this series.I have purchased all 3 twice in paperback (both covers).and hardback. have been told there is a 4th (prequel)(Castle of the wind?)there is the potential for many more if the legeds hinted at were explored .cant say enough about theese. Rohan has a masterwork here.
Where not in Tolkienville anymore..........2004-09-28
I have read this first book of his trillogy and it is a little rough but captivating enough. Lots of descritptions and little dialog. The concept is unique which makes it interesting to read. It may be offensive to Tolkien fans for looking like a knock off but if you can get by this it is quite a rewarding read compared to most fantasy books these days.
Great Read!!.......2003-12-13
Rating System:
1 star = abysmal; some books deserve to be forgotten
2 star = poor; a total waste of time
3 star = good; worth the effort
4 star = very good; what writing should be
5 star = fantastic; must own it and share it with others
STORY: When a coastal village is attacked by the seafaring, cannibalistic Ekwesh, a young thrall, Alv, is spared by their leader, Mylio the Mastersmith. In the shadow of the Great Ice, the sinister Mylio makes the boy his apprentice. Thus starts the journey for Alv (later named Elof) who discovers the ability within himself to smith items of power beyond what he or others imagine. His journeys take him to the deepest mountains of the duerger and to the lands of the children of the forest then to the battlements of the Southerners where he alone may have the ability to turn the tides of the coming Ice.
MY FEEDBACK:
Several series I read in High School I?ve hated later as an adult (i.e. Dragonlance). But this series still kept me turning page after page in anticipation of what will happen next. I have no complaints about the setting, characters, plot, sense of originality or overall writing.
The only complaint I have is that it seemed at a couple of points that a female duerger (dwarf in my mind and based on author?s descriptions) spoke in the exact same matter as a Southern Lord. This got a bit irritating for me, but the rest of the story allowed me to overlook this.
This is one of those well crafted stories that build up to a single climatic event vs. the current trend in media where every 15 minutes a climatic event occurs. But nowhere along the lines of building up to the event did I find the story slow, clich?, or boring. This is definitely up there in my top 5 series of all time. Get your hands on a copy ASAP. You won?t be disappointed.
Generic ho-hum fantasy.......2003-10-28
Low-grade Tolkien imitation. Feeble attempt at pretending to be some sort of pre-history epic. Laughable try at coming up with fantasy languages and names. Perhaps about the same level as David Eddings, a tad better than the D&D novel factories.
Great Book Bad Cover Art.......2002-05-15
This is a great book and a great series. I recently found the series in a box in my closet and I'm going to read them again. Why didn't these books sell better? Well...the cover art isn't attractive...that has always been my guess.

One of the better fantasy trilogies I've ever read.......2002-01-15
This is the first book of Rohan's trilogy. Like so many others, I can't believe this is out of print. It's easily in the top third of the trilogies/series I've read. As some others have said, this series has 'everything' you look for in good fantasy.
an excellent triology.......2000-04-25
I read a lot of fantasy and SF. This is one series that really stands out. It's a real mix of european and north american myth, set in an ice age. The end of an age of magic, gods and myth, but with a solid 'reality' base.
I've read this series more than once, and I still think it's great. Pick it up if you can and read it. It's worth it.
The glitter of ordinary fantasy transmuted by a master.......2000-03-03
Scott Rohan takes all the glitter of the ordinary fantasy novel and transmutes by solid smithcraft. This story starts with a thunderclap, storms off in fury and ends breathlessly, with the sequel looming like clouds in the distance. He is a very good writer with a style all his own, rich but not obscure, erudite but not pedantic. His hero becomes more appealing instead of more distant as his powers grow. The gods are truly fearful and unpredictable, playing and joking with destinies yet bound by destiny themselves. Of the vast and awesome landscapes, of the histories and myths, he shows us incredibly much in so few pages, and leaves us yearning for more. So: the Ice is advancing to blot all life off the face of the World. Neighbouring peoples, who could be brothers, wage war and do not see the freezing danger. Into these besieged lands is launched a young man to whom there is more than meets the eye. He has it in him to be a great hero, but he has also a fierce temper, plus impatience, foolishness, generosity and other faults in plenty to get him into trouble and to make him lovable. Don't wait: read it.
Simply the best FF you'll ever read.......1998-11-30
This trilogy is one of those rare things; a set of books you can laugh and cry at, and when you get to the end you just wan't more and more. I read the first book when it came out in the UK, and believe me when I say that waiting for each next book in the series was painfull, but when it came out.....you couldn't help but dance round the bookshop in joy.
I've never got so involved with a story that inspired me so much before. It's a cross between the dark side of Gormenghast and the scope of Lord of the Rings.
Only one other author has come close, Roger Taylor; the rest are way, way behind.
easily up there with eddings, jordan, feist and martin.......1998-10-07
back in the early 90's i unknowingly picked up this series in a used bookstore in san antonio texas. i have turned all of my friends who appreciate fantasy on to the series and will continue to do so. unfortunately, my copies are starting to look like one of jordan's early paperbacks, so i continue to look for them in used stores. tough to find, but if you do, snap it up and enjoy. i only wish his newer series was as good.

Customer Reviews:
Not a bad book for the casual chef.......2006-11-10
As a veteran food service professional and a devotee of the Food Lover's Companion i expected a little bit more from this book. It's full of fantastic tips and tricks, many known only in the food service industry, but i would be hard pressed to see this used as a reference book. It's interesting light reading. I expected more food science and chemistry and less 'Hints from Heloise'. The author's reliance on non-stick aerosol spray oil is a little unnerving.
It will certainly find a place in my chef's office, but more for the intersting tidbits of knowledge regarding beets than anything else.
Much of this information would be useful for the casual cook, but it lacks the 'must-have' draw of the Food Lover's Companion.
Always Find What I Want To Know.......2005-07-21
I got this book for a present about six months ago and can't stop picking it up. I heard this author on the radio recently and she was just as engaging and informative talking about burgers as she was about wine-and all the info she discussed is in this book, so I figure it's a darn good deal.
I've been cooking for a long time, but keep finding great info in The Food Lover's Tiptionary-whether for everyday cooking techniques (such as for subjects like corn, eggs, potatoes, tomatoes, etc.) or for tips for special event preparations (like how to handle caviar, or different ways to prepare risotto). There's even info on kitchenware and appliances-from knives to food processors.
Love the "tidbits" at the beginning of almost every listing-little informational "bites" (history, etymology, etc.) that add so much to the subject. In short, LOVE this handy, easy-to-read, exceedingly informative book!
Tips and Techniques to Boost Basic Cooking Skills........2004-11-05
"The Food Lover's Tiptionary" is a collection of tips and techniques on basic culinary subjects, organized alphabetically. I believe there are about 500 separate entries, but the book doesn't say. The 6,000 tips referred to on the book's cover fall under the entries. The book covers specific foods, general food categories, kitchen utensils, and culinary techniques. Food entries are presented in the following format: Tidbit (either a definition or food trivia), Purchasing, Equivalents, Storing, Preparing, Cooking, and/or Using. Some of the food entries are accompanied by short recipes. The formats of other types of entries vary, and may be best described by example: The entry for "Cookies" provides extensive instructions on making dough, preparing pans, baking, finishing, and storing. "Ice" gives general information and instructions for various ice cubes for different occasions. "Baked Goods" includes general baking tips. "Pasta Shapes" describes 65 shapes. Food quotes by recognizable names are scattered throughout the book, wherever the subject of the quote is found. There are several charts in the book, such as metric conversion, oven temperature equivalents, and pan sizes. And there is a Recipe Index in the back, for the over 100 short recipes found throughout the book.
Every cook could learn something from the "Tiptionary", but I think beginning or moderately experienced cooks will find it most useful. The subjects, themselves, are pretty basic. "Gourmet" subjects are few, and ethnic foods not at all. The entries are thorough, though, and would be helpful to an experienced chef if he/she doesn't happen to have experience with a particular food that is included. The emphasis is on instruction in "The Food Lover's Tiptionary", whereas the author's popular "Food Lover's Companion" emphasizes definitions. The "Food Lover's Companion" describes nearly 6,000 culinary terms -ethnic, gourmet, and obscure included.
Thanks again, Sharon Tyler Herbst.......2004-09-21
I've long been a fan of Sharon Tyler Herbst's books (have "The Ultimate A to Z Bar Guide," the "New Food Lover's Companion, the "Wine Lover's Companion" and "The Ultimate Guide to Pitcher Drinks"). So, when I recently received the new edition of her "Tiptionary" I eagerly started thumbing through it. This one's absolutely fabulous, and is also arranged in an easy A to Z format, which is one of the reasons I like this author's books so much! My new hubby's a hamburger fanatic (I'll convert him, yet;) so imagine my delight when I found over two pages of info on the subject. Now I cook his burgers just the way he likes them. Of course, I've found oodles of other subjects that make ME happy, like corn. The "Tiptionary" gave me dozens of hints on how to buy, store and cook it, and it has a super recipe for "Grilled Corn Off the Cob," which my spouse loves! And that brings me to another favorite feature of this book--it has dozens of short recipes scattered throughout. Not to mention that it tells you what to do with leftovers of whatever food you're looking up. Add to that loads of charts (temperature, measurements, pan sizes, pasta sizes, etc.), and you've got a book that every cook should have. Thank you, Sharon Tyler Herbst, for another great one!
Everything I wanted to know and more.......2004-08-12
Well, this book is certainly a winner. I LOVE to cook and know a lot about the subject, but a friend gave this to me for my birthday and I can't stop reading it. It's the little things that count for me, like information on pan substitutions (different sizes that will work for a pan you don't have) and temperature and measurement charts, and a pasta glossary. And I love the fabulous tips on all the foods. For instance, corn and tomato season is coming up and I've been buying a lot. This book gives me all kinds of tips on how to buy, store and prepare them, not to mention what to do with leftovers! I even learned how to make a juicier, more tender and less caloric hamburger. And I finally learned how to handle my microwave oven, which has been sitting unused for months. Need I say more? I LOVE THIS BOOK, and I think most people will, too.
