    Book Description

"...a moving study of post-vietnam voices and the spell of randomness and acceptable violence under which we've lately fallen. In all of his books Mr. Davis is a master of the quietly engineered sentence. His prose is a form of plainsong that disguises the sophistication of his method but never the breadth of his understanding and compassion."

An adventure story and a reflection of the experience of a generation, White Raven is a tale of childhood friends, cast adrift by the tide of change that swept through Poland during the 1980s. Following the accidental death of a policeman, the men go on the run. The urgent flight through the desolate winter mountains abruptly ends with a climax as shocking as it is symbolic. White Raven won the prestigious Fundacja Koscielskich Award.

          5 out of 5 stars Cold Prospects.......2007-05-09

This is an impressive book (indeed there is a lot of impressive literature coming out of Poland these days). The author manages to grip the reader's attention from the start and holds it, unwaveringly, to the very end. It is a tale of a group of misfits - almost social outcasts (except for the fact that these are Poles in the post-Communist era). Meaningless lives are anaesthetised by vodka and sex. Endless empty days merge into one - whether they are in the past or the present. It is a tale of an escape from reality that ends up being an escape from a threat that never really surfaces, is always there (is it real or is it imagined?). And all this takes place in a world devoid of colour, the white snowy landscape of the Carpathian mountains... It is an allegory of what happened after the Poles gained their "freedom" - and lost everything...

          4 out of 5 stars A side of Stasiuk..........2002-07-20

So this is the first of Stasiuk's books to be translated into English... it's a powerful novel, and beautifully written. Contrary to the Publishers' Weekly summary, it is not clear that an act of murder has indeed been comitted; the evidence in the book leans against it.

This story unfortunately doesn't showcase Stasiuk's greatest gift, which is his uncanny ability to be incredibly precise both in his introspection and his perceptions of the world. This sounds abstract, but think of Saul Bellow, except that Stasiuk is more immediate, and more respectful of the strangeness of the world. I am thinking of some of the essays in Tekturowy Samolot, or of the travel sketches he published recently in Rzeczpospolita. So far, only Polish readers have been able to enjoy these.

5 out of 5 stars The brilliance of Andrzej Stasiuk.......2001-08-23

White Raven is a beautiful introduction to the magnificent and charismatic writing of Andrzej Stasiuk, Poland's foremost writer of the modern day. The fact that he has written many books and has been steadily receiving recognition and acclaim throughout Poland and abroad should highlight the fact that his work has both appeal and importance. This book is one of the most profound works in which the characters live and experience their own lives, we are drawn to them as we begin to read for they are painted with feeling to the extent that we are transported into the story. The moment that we start to live in this story, we begin to stand next to the characters and seemingly we are also part of that group, part of that journey. The book is written in such a way as if our character could easily fit alongside, and our own thoughts and lives are integrated into the framework of that wonderful tale in the turn from adolescence to the beginnings of adulthood. Highlighted are the true fears, anxiety, anguish, doubt, and the fight to become for oneself, to discover oneself...and sometimes to be left without an answer to all of life's internal struggles and questions. There is no unnecessary materialistic decor, the book is strictly a journey of the spirit, of the unending questions in life...no matter the age of the individual, nor the place from which he comes. The book comes from a writer with a fantastic sensibility of emotion and experience. I would highly recommend this original work to anyone who truely loves great literature!

Black Tortoise, Red Raven, the compelling sequel to the novel White Tiger, Green Dragon, continues to weave a captivating tale as it follows the courageous pilgrimage of a young woman scholar as she travels the length of the Yangtze River.

Scholar Li, the daughter of Tu Ming and Shen Tao, flees a revolution in eastern China and travels west with a caravan of rug merchants. A Taoist intellectual and master of the tantric arts, the teenager encounters spiritual masters from unfamiliar traditions during her 1,500-mile expedition toward the foothills of the Himalayas. As she journeys to the Red Raven Temple, her spiritual understanding grows and she learns important life lessons from yogis, “crazy Zen” practitioners, Muslims, Buddhists, and Jews. Just as she is about to reach her final destination, Li's life is forever changed when she encounters an extraordinary stranger who bears an uncanny resemblance to a historical figure.

Black Tortoise, Red Raven not only opens the doors to personal growth and spiritual understanding for Li; it will also lead anyone who has a receptive spirit, open mind, and loving heart on the same journey to finding their true purpose in life.

This is the fourth volume in Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling's ongoing anthology series that invites modern authors to rewrite classic fairy tales. Like many of the original stories themselves, these retellings are often dark, and many contain erotic subtexts. While some of the authors choose to stick to the more traditional aspects of folklore, others reinvent their tales entirely, such as the seven dwarfs who turn into "Three Dwarfs and 2000 Maniacs" at the hands of author Don Webb. As usual, Datlow and Windling have managed to enlist an impressive roster of professional writers for their project, with headliners such as Joyce Carol Oates, John Crowley, and Jane Yolen. These seasoned veterans are mixed in with some relative newcomers to create a collection that is as diverse as it is unique. --Craig E. Engler

              Book Description

A stellar assymbly of many of today's most creative and accomplished storytellers has gathered around the tribal fire to embroider well-worn yearns with new golden thread. BLACK SWAN, WHITE RAVEN revisits the tales that charmed, enthralled and terrified us in our early youth--carrying us aloft into the healthy, beating heart of cherished myth to tell once again the stories of Rumpelstiltskins and sleeping beauties, only this time from an edgy, provocative and distinctly adult perspective. The themes and archetypes of our beloved childhood fiction are reexamined in a darker light by tweny-one superb teller of tales who deftly uncover the ironic, the outrageous, the enigmatic and the erotic at the core of the world's best-known fables, while revealing the sobering truths and lies behind "happily ever after."

4 out of 5 stars Better Than SNOW WHITE, BLOOD RED.......2003-02-20

Why is this fairy tale anthology out of print? It's got a great collection of stories! I liked practically everything that was in here. SNOW WHITE, BLOOD RED may have been the first volume in editors Datlow and Windling's series of such books, but this fourth one is hands-down more gripping... the stories are better written, in my opinion.

Among my favorite selections from this volume are:
SNOW IN DIRT by Michael Blumlein
              SPARKS by Gregory Frost
THE REVEREND's WIFE by Midori Snyder
THE TRUE STORY by Pat Murphy, and
              GODMOTHER DEATH by Jane Yolen

I hope BLACK SWAN, WHITE RAVEN is published once more so I can grab my own copy. I have the first three anthologies and haven't read number 2 and number 3 yet, but that was only because I had to finish this one in time to return it to the library. Thank goodness they have it!

If you like this series, then I definitely recommend getting your hands on this one.

              4 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2001-05-26

Black Swan, White Raven is an excellent anthology of new fairy tales based on the traditional stories. In this series, all the stories are dark, based on the fact that fairy tales were originally written/told for adults, and their relegation to the the nursery occurred with the Victorian era. Particularly strong and memorable stories are the Rapunzel one by Anne Bishop, the Snow White one by Pat Murphy, and the Tin Soldier one by Nancy Kress.

              5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2000-05-13

This is the first book that I have read in the series. Outstanding collection of short stories! These stories bring to light different aspects of the fairy tales we all grew up with. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars a brilliant series keeps getting better.......1999-04-01

The team of Datlow & Windling have put in their 4th collection of adult retellings of classic fairy tales, and this is the best yet. Strong, haunting tales that are truly not the Disney fluff we grew up on are what this collection is made of. Stories are drawn from many different cultures, not just the familiar Brothers' Grimm type; they also end up in many times/places, not just the dragons and castles type. The entire series is well worth your time.

3 out of 5 stars Odd perspective on this classic tale.......2006-04-11

The White Raven is the classic love story of Tristan and Isolde, but it is told by someone who was slightly outside of the story. Her name is Branwen and she is Isolde's (spelled differently in the book: Esseilte) cousin and best friend and they were raised as sisters.

As the author points out in her ending authors note Branwen is essential to this love story. Esseilte is married to Tristan's (in this novel Drustan) uncle, the high king of Cornwall. But on the voyage from Ireland to Cornwall Esseilte and Drustan manage to drink a love potion accidentally and are forever entwined. (In this version Esseilte was trying to poison Drustan and herself because he killed her uncle, Branwen's father.) Anyway, the point is, none of it would have worked without Branwen to stand guard and make us excuses for the sometimes absent queen of Cornwall. She even has to take her cousins place on her wedding night so that the king, Mark, will think he married a virgin.

Only something happens. Branwen and Mark don't just consummate his marriage to Esseilte, they make the great marriage and become in a sense the green king and queen-living representations of the land and its forever servants. Of course, Esseilte doesn't know that. Branwen is also in love with Mark, but he doesn't know it wasn't Esseilte on his wedding night. And Esseilte and Drustan can't keep their hands off each other.

The situation is a mess and Branwen has to clean it up again and again. So her point of view is interesting, but I feel a little cheated on the romance-you get nothing really of Tristan and Isolde in this book because Branwen is telling the story. Her own love life is interesting-but this is one of the greatest love stories of all time and we get so little of it in this book.

Other than the political mish-mash in this book is impossible to follow. Too many old names that are hard to remember and track. The genealogy charts are no help what so ever.

Basically, three stars. Nice writing, but I'm still looking for a really good retelling of the tale.

5 out of 5 stars By Far the best telling of this classic myth.......2006-03-22

This is a must for any helpless romantics out there.
I believe its the best telling of this myth by far. There is not only one romance, but two..and both are told beautifully and with their own complications and twists.

Everyone should read it!! one of my favourite books of all time, and just simply stunning

              Simply beautiful.
no other version ends it better... i dislike the movie ending, and many other endings dont have such a powerdul impact and leave me upset.

it's a must readdd for lovers of this tale!!!

              **Spoilers about the beautiful ending**
i love how isolde (( named Esseilte in this book))
dies after finding tristan (( named drunstan in this book)) dead. It shows how deep their love was for each other. Although Drunstan remarried another woman, he never loved the other woman and when severely wounded called for Esseilte to come back to him. His wife, also name Essilte, lies to him about what colour the sails of the boat are ((indicating whether essielte of ireland (his true love) has agreed to come to him)) his wife is jelous of tristans love for essilte so she lies to him about the colour of the sails, and he dies of dispiar...she dies once she finds him dead. and this version goes on to discribe them being burried together and even a glimpse of them as spirits together.

Diana Paxson writes so eloquently of Branwen's story against the backdrop of Tristan and Isault's. Her presentation of Branwen's sacrifices in the face of Isault and Tristan's somewhat selfish love affair made compelling reading! Far from being a soft love story, Paxson's tale gives a fascinating account of relationships, unrequited love and selfless/selfish ambitions. I have read this years ago and still do re-read it occasionally...and the magic is still there! Highly recommended.

              4 out of 5 stars Fairly Good.......1999-06-26

Anyone who believes this book to be about the romance of Trystan and Iseult has missed the point of this book entirely. The legend only provides the base for the events in the story. The real heroine in the book is Branwen who growns from maidenhood to adulthood with Iseult and learns to tap into the power of the Goddess. The book in itself is good, but not for its Arthurian content. Some scenes of pagan worship may disturb the quesy reader.

1 out of 5 stars Understanding Prehistoric Iconography in 174 Pages or less.......2001-04-11

Talking Pots is a book with an aggressive scope, suggesting that the deciphering of the meanings of prehistoric pottery can be made clear in 174 pages. Of course the stated purpose is to alert ceramicists to the potentials of symbols and symbol combinations (page 18), but ceramicists already know this. The book then proceeds to provide interpretations for many bowls and provide definitions of symbols so that apparently any layman picking up the book may use it to gain an understanding of the intended messaging within the bowl. No doubt prehistoric Puebloan bowls contained symbols and complex messaging, but there is no way that outsiders to those cultures are going to be able to actually determine the intended meanings and know the interpretations are even remotely correct from this book, but the fact that no one is around to debate you makes it seem easy. This assumes, of course, that Cunckle's identification of the symbols is correct in the first place. Identifying iconography is one thing and often dubious with prehistoric icons, but understanding the iconology, the beliefs associated with the images, is a whole other matter. It is interesting to note how easily we can apparently decipher prehistoric images, the images of a culture totally unlike our own, of a culture whose language we don't know and most assuredly do not speak. And then of course Cunckle shows how easily the same rules and symbols to interpret White Mountain wares can be carried other to interpret other types of pottery from other groups such as the Mimbres - as if all Puebloan peoples conveyed information in the same manner and used the same symbols. A brief look at Hopi, Zuni, and Eastern Pueblos' works clearly shows this is not the case, that Hopi symbolism does not translate directly into Zuni such that a Zuni could look at a Hopi bowl and ever actually understand it without first knowing Hopi culture inherently. Buy the book and enjoy it for what it is, a fun read. Do not take the interpretations too seriously. Many of the whimsical and crudely drawn cartoons should alert readers to the lack of seriousness of the addressed issues.

                    Book Description

Sixty years after Irma Rombauer advised new cooks to "Stand facing the stove," America's love affair with Joy of Cooking continues unabated. And why not? Joy in hand, tens of millions of people -- from novices to professionals -- have learned to do everything from make a meat loaf to clean a squid to frost a wedding cake. For decades, Joy of Cooking has taught America how to cook, serving as the standard against which all other cookbooks are judged.

All About Salads & Dressings upholds that standard. While keeping the conversational and instructional manner of the flagship book, All About Salads & Dressings is organized by salad type including green; vegetable and savory fruit; bean and grain; fish and shellfish; meat and poultry -- with such delicious classics and exciting innovations as Caesar Salad; Thai Beef Salad; Grilled Swordfish, Tangerine, and Jícama Salad; Tomato and Mozzarella Salad; Hot Apple Slaw; and Three-Bean Salad. And don't forget the dressings: everything from Basic Vinaigrette to creamy Green Goddess Dressing is covered. With a full primer on varieties of lettuce and suggestions for garnishing, All About Salads & Dressings illustrates how much more there is to salad than just lettuce.

Whether you belong to one of the millions of American households that already own a copy (or two) of Joy, or you have never cracked the spine of a cookbook before, Joy of Cooking: All About Salads & Dressings is for you. It is a spectacular achievement, worthy of its name. Joy has never been more beautiful.

                    Amazon.com

You know to first consult The Joy of Cooking for the perfect recipe for salads like caesar, cobb, Waldorf, or three-bean, but what about Pasta Salad with Shrimp, Roasted Red Peppers, and Black Olives, Hot Apple Slaw, or Bread and Tomato Salad? For more than 60 years, home cooks have turned to that beloved cookbook for classic recipes, definitions, and instructions for cooking techniques, but when looking for something new and different, full of spice, or slightly exotic, we tend to go elsewhere. So Ethan Becker is retraining us with The Joy of Cooking: All About Salads and Dressings. Becker--Irma S. Rombauer's grandson and Marion Rombauer Becker's son--continues the family tradition of sharing foolproof recipes for everyday cooking in everyday kitchens. But this new All About series is also beautifully illustrated, filled with brilliant color photographs, and the flavors and techniques have been updated to reflect the way we cook and eat today. Tunisian-Style Carrot Salad glows orange, gold, and red in a full-page photo across from the recipe. Flavored with lemon and orange, coriander, cumin, cinnamon, and chili, it's warm and bright, crisp and fresh. Tzatziki Potato Salad is light and tangy, well dressed with fresh mint and dill, cucumber, garlic, and yogurt. A chapter on dressings includes an exciting collection of vinaigrettes--everything from Basic to Tomato Mint and Fennel Parmesan to creative dressings like Tangerine Shallot and Chipotle Pepper Mayonnaise.

Becker's new Joy is as essential as ever. It still includes old favorites like Green Goddess dressing and molded gelatin salads, and walks us through tasks like how to cook and peel beets. But it's the new illustrations and photographs, and recipes like Quinoa Salad with Pine Nuts and Raisins and Sautéed Veal Medallions on Arugula Tomato Salad, that make you want to renew your old friendship with Joy. --Leora Y.
