Book Description
A classic novel of Vietnam and its aftermath from Philip Caputo, whose Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir
A Rumor of War is widely considered among the best ever written about the experience of war.
At thirty-three, Nick DelCorso is an award-winning war photographer who has seen action and dodged bullets all over the world–most notably in Vietnam, where he served as an Army photographer and recorded combat scenes whose horrors have not yet faded in his memory. When he is called back to Vietnam on assignment during a North Vietnamese attempt to take Saigon, he is faced with a defining choice: should he honor the commitment he has made to his wife not to place himself in any more danger for the sake of his career, or follow his ambition back to the war-torn land that still haunts his dreams? What follows is a riveting story of war on two fronts, Saigon and Beirut, that will test DelCorso’s faith not only in himself, but in the nobler instincts of men.

Not his usual high standard .......2007-05-13
Caputo, Philip....is repeating himself here. Or actually he's selling a rough draft. DelCorso's Gallery (published 1983) is Means of Escape (pub. 1991) in fictional form.
Instances in Rumors of War are repeated here too, as they also are in Means of Escape, sometimes word for word.
The quality of writing is subpar compared to Horn of Africa (fic), The Voyage (fic), Acts of Faith (fic), Means Of Escape (nf) even A Rumor of War (nf), In fact it's hard to believe that Delcorso's Gallery is his third book and not his very first. It's that poor.
The story is the life (including family) of a war photojournalist with a cast of war correspondents going from Vietnam to the mideast.
I recommend you skip this and go straight to the finished non-fiction version Means of Escape.

Awesome story of war and men........2004-06-25
Wow. Awesome story about war. Makes war more real than anything you see on tv or read in the news. A very personal story. Great psychological drama about the photographer and his conflicts.
A Must Read........1998-04-28
It is somewhat hard to describe this book in a few sentences. Even though mostly fiction, the main character plays an uncanny resemblance to the author himself. Something that is especially noticeable if you ever read Caputo's Autobiography "Means of Escape." The picture this book paints of Beirut is frighteningly realistic, something that even non-fiction books written about the War fail to achieve. Likewise, the portrayal of a photojournalist, one who is asked to risk his life "to beat AP by 5 min." is superb by any account. Anyone who is familiar with Caputo's literary work knows how good this man is at molding and developing complex, intelligent, and memorable characters. Delcorso's Gallery is a prime example of this. I urge anyone who at the least is curious about what happened in Beirut to read this novel in addition to the history books out there. I do not know if history will repeat itself somewhere else in the future, but it is important to be aware.

Casca lives on!
Customer Reviews:
More painful reading from Dengelegi.......2007-05-11
Better than Liberator but then that wasn't hard. The book cover had nothing to do with the contents of the book, always a sign nobody at the publisher cared jack about it. Maybe they read the start, gave up bored and sent it out. This guy would have ruined Casca if he'd carried on any longer. I can't believe anyone gave this 5 stars, they must be the writer's buddies.
Painful dialogue, it moved so slowly you were screaming at him to get on with it. [...]. The storyline went something like Casca is in Venice, saves Marco Polo from drowning, sits around saying little, gets dragged as passenger on some long journey, [...], has some buddies die on him. They then get stuck in a snowstorm that lasts for months (but the old guys in a tent survive - huh??). Casca dreams about his childhood. He gets to China, does the wild thing with some girl, sees lots of important guys and saves the empire from revolt.
He seems to accidentally fall into things and never plans anything. He's like some luggage carried around by everyone else. This isn't Barry Sadler's Casca. Its some hobo from the streets with a sword.
Better, but still a way to go.......2006-10-03
I have to admit that this is better than his original attempt at this series. The battles are much improved. The problem is that he is still overly descriptive of areas of the story that really does not require it. I found myself skipping pages again. When a reader has to skip pages for a lack of interest, you loose the reader's attention. Sadler had the ability to reach out and pull you into the story, and when you did come up for air or food you were ready to dive back in immediately. In this book, ofttimes I found myself on the outside looking in, and I really didn't care if I finished. The author also had a tendency to stray from the story and loose the plot for a while, which confused me at times.
I'm sorry but if this author makes another attempt at this series I doubt I will read it.
Defiant to the End!.......2006-07-20
This latest Casca novel, the 2nd in this new authors Casca tryout, is still unfortunately coming up short.
Barry Sadler's Casca novels were fantastic pulp hero type action novels, filling a groove for readers that loved such short novels like Conan the Barbarian could truly appreciate.
Out of all of Sadler's writing ventures, only Casca really shined like a well polished blade. I still own all of the series.
I am glad and humbled that someone has tried to take up the huge writing reins to continue this series. A solid writer could well take on this saga, giving hungry old readers of the series - as well as new ones - new adventures of Casca, the eternal mercenary. There are hundreds of untold times to pick and choose from.
As much as I admire someone making an attempt, this author has come up somewhat short of just making a Sadler pulp adventure story. He shows potential, however. Practice makes perfect.
Well, one hopes anyway.
Better but still not Sadler.......2005-02-05
Paul Denegelegi's second Casca book is markedly better than the first but still contains a little too much over descriptive passages, making the book a little heavy at times. This story has Casca meeting a young Marco Polo in Venice and then accompanying him to China and the court of Kubilai Khan and he enjoys many adventures there.
Dengelegi writes well when battles are decribed but all too often there seems to be a little wandering from the main plot which detracts from the storyline. Sadler wrote in an all-action mode and this is what Casca fans really want, not a ponderous storyline which is why Denegelegi attracts a lot of criticism.
One thing I particularly disliked was the final part where the writer attempted to connect this book's storyline with the beginning of his first book and in the process contradicted Sadler's storyline for the character. Careless and with a little more care this would have been avoided.
Not Even Close.......2002-08-18
Too bad Barry Sadler is dead.. I don't think he would approve of the way Casca is rewritten....

Book Description
Written with all the power and conviction that made THE FOUNTAINHEAD a classic of American letters, Ayn Rand's ANTHEM is a hymn to man's independent spirit and to the highest word in the human language - "Ego."
First written in 1937, ANTHEM was published in England, but was refused in publication in America, for reason which the reader might discover by reading it for himself. In 1946, it appeared as a pamphlet, issued by Pamphleteers, Inc., of Los Angeles. This is its first American publication in regular book form.
ANTHEM is one of the most beautiful prose poems ever written. Ruth Alexander, the great Libertarian lecturer and columnist, has said in her column that ANTHEM is "tender and terrific - the greatest novel I have ever read, and I have covered the literary water front in seven languages. You will think - you will weep - you will be inspired to new determination not to let the creeping evil of collectivism happen here." It is written with such power and sincerity and beauty that every thinking American should read it.
ANTHEM tells the story of a man who rediscovers the individualism and his own "I" - in a world of absolute collectivization, a world where sightless, joyless, selfless men exist for the sake of serving the State; where their work, their food and their mating are prescribed to them by order of the Collective's rulers in the name of society's welfare - a world which has lost all the achievements of science and civilization, when it lost their root, the independent mind, and has reverted to primitive savagery - a world where language contains no singular pronouns, where the "We" has replaced the "I," and where men are put to death for the crime of discovering and speaking the "unspeakable word."
The story tells of one man who rebelled, of his struggle and his victory. Assigned to the life work of street sweeper by the rulers who resented his brilliant, questioning, unsubmissive mind - he becomes a scientist, secretly, risking his life for the sake of his quest for knowledge. In the midst of collective stagnation, where men toil at manual labor by the light of candles - he discovers electricity. In the midst of eugenic planning and State-controlled Palaces of Mating - he discovers a personal love and a woman of his own choice. In the midst of brutal morality which proclaims that man is only a sacrificial animal to the needs of others - he discovers that man's greatest moral duty is the pursuit of his own happiness. He endures danger, denunciation, imprisonment, torture - but he breaks the chains of the Collective, he escapes with the woman he loves, to start a new life in an uncharted wilderness, and he reaches the day when he is able to predict that "my home will! become the capital of a world where each man will be free to exist for his own sake."
ANTHEM presents not merely a frightening projection of existing trends, but, more importantly, a positive answer to those trends and a weapon against them, a key to the world's moral crisis and to a new morality of individualism - a morality which, if accepted today, will save us from a future such as the one presented in this story.
Download Description
A stunning and brilliantly realized future world in which individuality has been crushed is the theme of Ayn Rand's bestselling masterpiece, "Anthem". Rand presents her tale of a man who dares to make individual choices, to seek knowledge in a dark age, to love the woman of his choice. In a society in which people have no name, no independence, and no values, he is hunted for the unpardonable crime: having the courage to stand above the crowd. Introduction by Leonard Peikoff.

great!.......2007-08-23
Of course the book is a little overdone. But I found it refreshing to read this that book celebrates individualism in a world that sometimes celebrates collectivism.
If I had my way EVERY high school student would read it.......2007-08-22
No other work I've ever come across can convey the importance of individuality and the threat it suffers from collectivism, or at least not in such a small format. This book had a profound effect on me when I first read it and it made me want to learn more.
A great message... with a meandering story.......2007-07-31
This is the first Ayn Rand book I've read, even though I was familiar with her philosophy of objectivism. The book itself is set in an alternate world, most likely during the 21st century. It is a backwards world completely controlled by the great "we" in which councils decide everything, and only the will of your "brothers" matters. It is an interesting, if at times confusing, world that she creates; but unfortunately she doesn't describe it enough to offer a firm foundation (however yes I know, it's just a novella). The main character shows great development which can be traced throughout the novel - a vivid, distinct transformation, which is wonderfully illustrated both mentally and physically by Rand.
The story, in the first three-quarters of the book, is particularly interesting, but unfortunately she wanders off-course, by forsaking the plot for the philosophical message she wishes to get across. While the philosophical message is important, as it is the basis of the book, I would've appreciated a more complete ending.
On the whole, Anthem seems to be a great introduction to Rand's philosophy and writing, but as a fictitious story it tends to fall off course. It's a short book though, so I would highly recommend it, as it offers interesting philosophical insight into the nature of individualism and collectivism.
Government.......2007-07-16
Being the normal high school slacker that I am, I chose to read this book and write a response to it, rather than read a book close to 400 pages long and give an oral response to it. And I will say at first I didn't understand anything that was going on. The writing is simple to almost the point that you see no point in reading it. The simplistic writing doesn't seem to shape up to anything. But by the time I got to the last page I couldn't believe what I had just read. It was incredible. I could have written endless pages for the school assignment. It leaves the audience with so many possiblities in the meaning of the book and it leaves you thinking. I'm off soon to purchase this book, every time I see it on the shelves at the book store I tell everyone how much I loved it, definately a reccommended read.
Not much to this one..........2007-07-13
I haven't read any of Ayn Rand's other books but this one was extremely dissapointing. The theme was very simple, and delivered so that the most simple minded would have difficulty not understanding it.
I just didn't feel like this was particularly creative, the worst part being that it is simply a poor piece of literature.
I hate to give one star but the story was seemed trite and simplistic and the writing was poor so I'm not sure if it had any redeeming factors that I could perceive.

Anthem- Rand's Best.......2003-04-26
I wouldn't exactly say that anthem is a book,it is more of a poem of man's search to rediscover what has been lost in his collectivist society. It was frightening to hear how individual's were described as "We," without a clear recognition of their own individual traits and characteristics. I personally, was overwhelmed with the realization, that maybe this could happen to us in the distant future. An extremely well written novel.
Powerful Novelette.......2000-01-11
Follow the struggle of a man as he finds the one word that his society has lost. And think about what your mental state would be if you did not have that word...
An unrealistic propaganda machine.......1999-05-26
In Anthem, Ayn Rand creates a society of collectivization that has no discernable basis for its power in the world. The book is a method of propagating atheism, self-worship, and anarchism.
A unique and intersting book........1999-05-12
I loved this book! i've never read a book like it befor
Similar to Atlas Shrugged. Pro Simplicity. Con Simplistic........1998-04-17
Ayn Rand in her crusade against collectivism continues her mono-chromatic portrait of a future (?) collectivist society. In order to describe the extremes of collectivism the settings are twisted to the underlying philosophy of Rand. For example, if it is that easy for the hero to escape the clutches of the collectivist society, why has'nt the men before him (those who were born in a free society). This book is extremely simplistic. Anthem is to Atlas Shrugged as Animal Farm is to 1984.

Reading about the ins and outs of baking the perfect, flaky pie crust is a little like reading about how to achieve the perfect golf swing: the proof is in the doing. And it often takes a remarkably intuitive reader to understand exactly what the author is getting at. Not so the work of Rose Levy Beranbaum, the author who gave us The Cake Bible. If ever there was a cookbook author who could place her hands on top of yours, putting you through the proper motions, helping you arrive at just the right touch, Beranbaum is the one.
The Pie and Pastry Bible begins with the crust. The author confesses right up front that 21 years ago, when she first began her quest for the perfect crust, "it was a complete mystery to me." She wasn't looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but something she could consistently turn out at a moment's notice. The ideal pie crust, she writes, "has light, flaky layers, but also ... is tender, and nicely browned, with a flavor good enough to eat by itself."
In a book that stretches to about 700 pages long, her favorite pie crust is the first recipe: Perfect Flaky and Tender Cream Cheese Pie Crust. Typically, Beranbaum lists the ingredients by measure and weight for three separate sizes of pies, then gives instructions for the food processor or by hand.
After 70 pages of pie crusts, tart crusts, and crumb pie crusts of every imaginable make and combination, Beranbaum starts with fruit pies. Her first (of many) detailed charts shows exactly what her ratios are of fruit to sugar to cornstarch. Then each recipe (start with The Best All American Apple Pie) includes pointers for success as well as several variations on the theme. Under the headline "Understanding," Beranbaum goes that extra mile by taking the trouble to explain just why something works the way it does.
If you are only going to own one cookbook for pie and pastry recipes of every imaginable stripe and combination, you can't go wrong with this one. It's the Bible, after all. --Schuyler Ingle
Customer Reviews:
awesome photos...awesome recipes.......2007-07-08
She is a master of baking. Have tried several recipes...turned out great. With the beautiful photos, I plan to be baking for a long time!
Pie is good.......2007-03-10
And the Lord did sayeth, "Let there be pie", and there was pie, and yea it was good. And the Lord did eateth all the pie, and that did maketh everyone else Angry, and it was all not that good, but nobody did sayeth anything to the Lord because they know that if they Did than the Lord would smiteth them with a Thunder-bolt, and believeth you and me a Thunder-bolt is not much fun.
The Pie Bible doesn't have phrases like that, but when you think about it, it really should. As long as you don't think about it that much.
Excellent resource.......2007-03-10
The flaky cream-cheese pie crust recipe alone is worth the price of the book. Additionally there are other excellent recipes and techniques. Everything is very clear and fail-proof. There are recipes for various types of pie, struedel, danish, and savory pastries like quiche and empanadas.
Perfect !.......2007-01-31
Mme Rose's book is one of the best cooking books around! All is complete: the details are absolutely incredible and all the tips are real and effective. Plus the section "understanding" gives an extra level of comprehension on what you're doing. No wonder why she spent all these years experimenting and trying all the possible ingredient combinations.
If you want to climb up to excellency in pie and pastry standards, it's the guide you need.
Not only HOW, but also WHY.......2006-12-31
I'm new to pastries and have been using this book for about 6 months. It's like having a graduate course in baking and I feel it's the book to buy if you're only going to buy one. And if you're going to buy more than one, it's still the book to buy. I've noticed that some of the reviewers complain that there's too much information. Difficult for me to understand how there can be too much information if your goal is how to make great pastries. The book is complete. You don't need anything else.
