Book Description
It is said that art reveals the heart of humankind, architecture the soul of civilization. This summer, heart and soul will merge in the new building for Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art. Designed by famous Berlin architect Josef Paul Kleihues (his first U.S. commission), the new MCA stands beside both celebrated Michigan Avenue and the city's stunning lake shore.
This book examines the entire process of starting and then dramatically expanding a contemporary art museum, from the tumultuous sixties to the cusp of a new century. The MCA's achievements, such as Christo's first wrapping of a public building (1969), Frida Kahlo's first U.S. exhibition (1978), and Jeff Koons's first full-scale museum exhibition (1988) are discussed, accompanied by historic photographs.
In his essay "Josef Paul Kleihues: Chicago and Berlin," art and architecture critic Franz Schulze considers the conceptual framework of Kleihues's design for the MCA, as well as the architect's adaptive reuse of the Hamburger Bahnhof train station to house Berlin's Museum of Contemporary Art.
Finally, color reproductions of 40 works from the vast MCA permanent collection are juxtaposed with informative text on more than 30 featured artists, including Francis Bacon, Leon Golub, Jasper Johns, Sol LeWitt, Bruce Nauman, Ad Reinhardt, Mark Rothko, Cindy Sherman, and Andy Warhol.
The sum of these parts is a fascinating volume that thoroughly examines the very idea of an art museum according to its corresponding ideal: presenting, interpreting, and collecting the art of our time for a diverse audience.
Book Description
Jewelry was one of the purest, and most successful, expressions of the Art Nouveau movement. It captured the atmosphere and the passion of the fin de sicle, as well as the moral and artistic freedom that characterized the period. Fresh designs and motifs were created with an intense excitement that was shared by artists all over the world. Sensuous animal and plant forms surged with new life; the female form struggled toward a new freedom, suggesting a long-hidden eroticism; and sunsets and changing seasons reflected the symbolic view of art in nature borrowed from the Japanese. This book deals with major jewelers in France--their inspirations, techniques, and themes--and then follows the parallel modern movement that spread through Europe and the United States. With a detailed reference section and a collection of dramatic photographs, this treasury will appeal to collectors and jewelry lovers alike.
Customer Reviews:
Impressive, comprehensive.......2007-01-10
A very good book about this period, no other one has covered the subject as this one.
complete but dissapointing.......2006-11-01
i wanted to know more about art nouveau jewelry and this book really helped me for that purpose.
it has lots of pictures and info about whatever there is to know and see.
the only dissapointment was that majority of the pics are in black and white. You miss out on all the enameling work colors..
also i expected to see more from lalique.
overall though its a good book for starters.
Beautiful and Informative Book.......2006-06-27
This book far exceeded my expectations for the price! The only minor criticism I have is that I wish ALL the photographs had been in color. A great deal......
FANTASTIC!!.......2006-04-12
Beautiful book, this book was much more than I expected. The pictures of jewellery and the information contained within was worth every penny.
Art Nouveau Jewelry.......2006-03-09
This is a gorgeous book with fine high quality photos and great history, but it lacks a price guide which would add greatly to the appeal.

Book Description
A completely new and faithful facsimile of the original 1906 WMF catalogue, now printed throughout in color for the very first time.
Book Description
After the extravagant forms of Art Nouveau, the Art Deco movement represented a return to simplicity and severity. As this book richly demonstrates, in that period jewelry found a virtually unlimited source of renewal. Designers drew inspiration from the entire vivid spectrum of the plastic arts: riotous colors in explosive combinations from the Ballets Russes and the Fauves, geometric shapes from Cubism and Suprematism, the contrast of black and white from Neo-Plasticism, and a fascination with the mechanical world from Futurism. Nor were its exponents confined to the modern European world: an Egyptian vogue was prompted by the 1922 discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, while other themes were borrowed from the Far East, Persia, and Africa.
Art Deco Jewelry displays through sumptuous illustrations, coupled with a lucid and informative text, the creations of the haute joaillerie (jewelers such as Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels) and of the avant-garde designersJean Fouquet, Raymond Templier, Gérard Sandoz, Jean Durand, and Paul Brandtto whom we owe some of the most daring and brilliant jewels of the period. There is also an exquisite range of accessories: dainty vanity cases fashioned with the maximum of detail in the minimum of space, boxes and cigarette cases, and a spectacular array of clocks.
With the addition of succinct biographies of the most innovative and influential jewelers of the day, a select bibliography, and a glossary, this book serves as an essential reference for anyone interested in the period or in superb examples of the jeweler's art. 792 illustrations and photographs, 261 in color.

Berlin chic of the 1930's.......2004-09-22
Probably the dawn of art deco fashion jewelry was the 16-28 May 1927 machine-age exposition in New York. This exposition showed how modern technology could be fused with the arts, bringing German bauhaus design to America's attention.
The prior year, 1926, saw the release of the silent film "Metropolis," Fritz Lang's anxious vision of a world demanding conformity in which "the masses" are controlled by machines and their owners. This film's art direction makes use of many art deco design elements which find their way into mainstream costume jewelry design. Geometric shapes and simplicity dominate costume jewelry in which new, inexpensive materials, such as bakelite and corolite could be incorporated, adding translucent and opaque color.
Fashion jewelry components in the 1930's were manufactured primarily in Bohemia so, when Jewish owners lost their factories in 1938, art deco costume jewelry also vanished from the fashion scene. This book gathers -- and preserves in photographs -- much of art deco jewelry's beauty within its pages.

Fun Art Deco Figurines.......2007-06-15
If you are looking for hundreds of pictures of figurines and statues from the art deco masters, then this book is for you. If you are looking for a lot of narration and information about this period and style of art, you may be disappointed. I enjoyed the book a great deal and the modest amount of text was enough for me.
Book Description
It’s elementary, Charlie Brown!
For Charlie Brown and friends it’s time to get on the bus and head back to school.
Sure, teachers can be hard to understand . . . but don’t worry, you have the whole
Peanuts gang to help you along. There’s Charlie Brown carrying his trusty apple,
Sally volunteering to bang erasers (with Linus, of course), Peppermint Patty sleeping
in the back of the classroom, and Lucy, as usual, having all the answers. Maybe the
most important lesson you’ll learn from this delightful new collection is the
importance of good friends!
Customer Reviews:
I absolutely love it!.......2006-07-21
As my title says, I love it so much! The comic strips are reasonabaly funny! Except for one thing...it's about school, right? They never actually show the characters IN school...all they show is maybe Sally and Charlie Brown at home talking about teachers, grades, tests, uh huh or maybe Linus and Charlie Brown walking to school together. Otherwise, it's a great collection!
Not as good as it could have been. . ........2004-04-16
A rather disappointing collection of strips, I'm afraid, the chief problem being that many of the strips are taken from longer sequences of strips, but without the rest of the story! Thus, for example, we see Lucy telling Linus that a study of him and his blanket will be her school science project; but where's the rest of the story?
Considering how much space is left empty on each page--half or more of each page instead is filled with lines to simulate notebook paper, and faces of Peanuts characters peeking out--it seems to me there is no reason this could not have been a much fuller collection.
Classroom Peanuts, a hardcover collection of school related Peanuts strips, did the job much better.
A Must-Have for the Peanuts Collector!!.......2003-09-20
This is another great collection of Peanuts strips from Ballantine. If you like the other Peanuts books by Ballantine, you will like this one. All of the strips pertain to, of course, school. The strips are in black and white (even Sunday strips), but there are color pictures of the Peanuts characters peeking out from the pages along with some colored backgrounds and even ruled backgrounds to look like notebook paper. Great book!!
