this story revives the character Peter Macklin-detroit hitman. Pete Macklin now lives in Los Angeles California and has married a young lady in her twenties,he is now 44 years old. He has given up the world of organized crime and is attempting to lead a clean Married life. Charles Maggiore former acting head of Detroit's Mafia has been released from prison and warned to stay out of detroit but he has scoped out a new potential base of operation in San Antonio Texas which has a weak mafia. He has tracked Pete Macklin to California and knows of his marriage, and laid out an elaborate plan to use Macklin in helping him set up his texas base. He invites Macklin to a meal and at the same time has his wife held hostage and forces Macklin who hates his guts to Asassinate two key San Antonio racketeers setting the stage for a hostile takeover in San Antonio. Charles Maggiore kept up to date about Macklin's targets in texas and was ready to move in when Macklin is finally able to cut his ambitions short with a knife across his throat. Pete macklin's wife was able to kill her kidnapper and Pete finds her safe at an agreed rendesvous.

5 out of 5 stars Hopefully, It Won't Be Another 10 Years Before The Next One!.......2002-05-02

This book chronicles the welcome and overdue return of Estleman's character Peter Macklin, here a retired hitman for the Detroit mob. A newlywed on his honeymoon, Macklin is spotted by an associate of Carlo Maggiore, "Carl Major", an old acquaintance and onetime target, who presses him into doing one more job. Macklin's young bride is monitored by Abilene, a pseudo-cowboy associate of Maggiore's and during the course of his duties, he lets slip who Macklin is and also shows off his own psycho tendencies, leading Laurie Macklin to attempt to slip his clutches.

The book switches back and forth from San Antonio, the site of Macklin's hit, to Los Angeles, and is very effective in building suspense, and supplying the viewpoints of several characters, including a detective transplanted to Texas from the Midwest and concerned about becoming too much of a Texan.

Macklin is a hard, tough character who previously appeared in Estleman's _Kill Zone_, _Any Man's Death_, and _Roses Are Dead_. He's reminiscent of Richard Stark's tough guy, Parker, though Parker is a thief who only kills when he has to, while Macklin is a killer, first and foremost. Hopefully, we won't have to wait another 10 years or more for the next Macklin book.

5 out of 5 stars exciting crime thriller.......2002-04-12

In his mid forties, Peter Macklin retired several years ago as a hit man and recently married the much younger Laurie. They are enjoying their honeymoon in Los Angeles when crime boss Carlo Maggiore spots Peter. Though Macklin tried to kill Carlo years ago, business is business so the mobster "hires" Peter to complete a hit that one of his thugs messed up. The fee is fifty large ones plus the safe return of his wife if he kills San Antonio bookie Johns Davis.

Peter hides what he is doing from Laurie, insisting he is going to Sacramento on business. Instead Peter goes to Texas to complete the job. Though out of practice, a hit feels like riding a bike to the retired professional. As Peter works on the details of how he will execute the assignment, Laurie realizes that her "baby-sitter" is no friend of her spouse. She knows that she must depend on herself to remain safe from this goon, while patiently waiting until Peter returns to force the truth from him.

The latest Macklin tale is an exciting crime thriller that showcases the talent of award-winning Loren D. Estleman and demonstrates why the antihero is so popular. The story line is loaded with action whether Peter is the focus or Laurie takes center stage. Though the tale fails to provide Laurie's reactions to Peter's former profession (stay tuned for that in the next novel), fans of the author, especially of Macklin, will appreciate this gratifying thriller.

5 out of 5 stars I Love the Little Sisters.......2006-10-10

I adore all the Little Sisters series - every one is a delightful romantic-comedy-mystery. They are very much of their time and I like reading about these independent young woman during WWII and knowing that this was my grandmothers' generation ( and that these are from the time, not some retro-feminized take on the past. The Black Honeymoon first came out in 1944 ). The Little Books are slight and very formulaic, so if you like your books thick and emotionally deep, they are probably not for you. But truly, if you're a fan of films like "The Thin Man" and "Arsenic and Old Lace" it's almost a guarentee that you'll enjoy these.

5 out of 5 stars Like Watching a Good Old Movie.......2001-08-15

This was my first exposure to the Little sisters, and I'm a definite fan. I couldn't put the book down; it was like watching a good old black-and-white movie set in the 40s. It has a cast of great characters (the batty old aunt, the young lovers, the pompous older relatives and a smart-alecky detective), and lots of humor. I'm so glad the sisters wrote many of these mysteries!

5 out of 5 stars A memorable and clever comic mystery.......2000-12-08

Young nurse Miriel Mason marries Ian, an army officer on leave. who she's known less than a week. His gravely ill Uncle Richard is one of her patients, and she's soon to meet the rest of her husband's family because their honeymoon (to her surprise) is to be spent in the old family mansion, already filled with assorted relatives. Almost immediately Miriel is given reason to doubt Ian's motives for marrying her. She decides he'll have to court her during their honeymoon. When Uncle Richard dies under extremely unusual circumstances, Miriel asks her father's friend and P.I. Montgomery Kelly for help. Kelly gets himself hired as a butler to find out who might have killed Richard, and might be trying to frame Miriel. Unfortunately, Kelly says he can't think and work at the same time, and he's not too interested in serving others anyway. He tells Ian's Aunt Mabel that serving breakfast before 10 a.m. would be beneath his dignity, and he has Miriel doing his job, along with her own. Due to a shortage of nurses, she's working overtime at the hospital, cooking and cleaning at home, and trying to figure out which of her new relatives might be her enemies.

Not quite as delightful as the Little sisters' THE GREAT BLANK KANBA. Indeed, there are some dark, creepy goings-on in that mansion. Still, there's much to like here. The main trio of characters are wonderful. Miriel is a clever, independent, hard-working nurse, whose supply of sarcastic remarks is apparently inexhaustible. Ian gains sympathy as the put-upon husband, despite his murky motivations. Ian and Kelly of course take an instant dislike to each-other and it's a tribute to the authors' writing that their animosity never feels forced, and their verbal jousting is fresh and funny. Hilarious dialogue and great characters make this book an entertaining read. Sometimes, Kelly and Miriel behave foolishly, in seemingly self-destructive ways. I wasn't too annoyed by that because the book had so many good qualities.

5 out of 5 stars The Black Honeymoon.......2000-11-29

This is a Golden Age mystery written in the 1930's. The story is of a young man and a young woman who get married and plan to spend their honeymoon in the young man's family mansion. When they arrive, they find that his whole family is staying at the mansion, much to their chagrin, and because of an old aunt who is very ill. There are several murders, husband and wife try to find the murderer, and at the very end, surprisingly, we find out who did it. And it is a surprise ending!

I really liked this book because it gives a certain flavor of the 1930's and how people lived and spoke, etc. Very well written! It's funny and also keeps you on the edge of your seat.

4 out of 5 stars A good story but not for fans of hack and slash.......2001-06-29

This is a very good read if you are not looking for a hack and slash adventure. The characters are all well defined, the book reads easily, and is well structured. The characters are not superhuman, which is a nice change of pace and adds a pleasant flavor to the story. The ending becomes apparent in mid-story but this does not detract from the quality of the tale. I would say that anyone that enjoyed the Cleric Quintet, by R.A. Salvatore, would also enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars An epic story of adventure, tragedy and renewal........1999-09-30

This is one of the better FR books that I've read. I enjoyed the characters and was able to empathize with them (important point). Although I figured out how the story would end (for the most part), I found it to be no less tragic and moving. Although I don't think a sequel is viable, this is one of those books where you're left wondering what happened next to the characters. This is a TSR book that I expect to read again!

                5 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking novel.......1999-03-18

Star of Cursrah is without a doubt Clayton Emery's best work to date. A truly original idea from an up-and-coming author. The adventures of Amenstar and her companions are not easily forgotten. A very haunting tale. 5 stars!!!

                    Book Description

For twenty-eight years Sandra Oaks taught five, six, and seven year olds. She laughed with them; she cried with them; she prayed for them; and she kept a journal of her experiences. PLEASE DON'T EAT THE CRABAPPLES is a reflection of the laughter, tears and prayers reflected in her journal. These wonderfully poignant vignettes vividly portray one kindergarten teacher's interactions with a wide diversity of students. At times you will laugh and at times you will cry as her experiences find their ways into your heart. This book gives a realistic look at both the difficulties and joys teachers of young children deal with on a daily basis. Teachers are caregivers who impart not only knowledge, but who also nurture those given to their care according to their personal needs. It is one of the most important tasks any adult can aspire to achieve. Here is a inside view at how a praying teacher gets through the day with her twenty-five plus students while maintaining not only her sanity, but her sense of humor as well. Once you begin reading, you won't put the book down until you are finished.

                    Book Description

For nearly a century, Neiman Marcus has epitomized luxury—urbane merchandise in an elegant ambience. Neiman Marcus is also famous for the extraordinary food it serves at its restaurants and cafés across the country. Now, at long last, the renowned institution shares more than fifty years’ worth of legendary dishes in this lavishly illustrated cookbook.

From the flagship store in Dallas, featuring the Zodiac Restaurant, to its landmark Rotunda restaurant overlooking Union Square in San Francisco and its newest restaurant, Mariposa, in Coral Gables, Florida, there are forty-two Neiman Marcus restaurants in stores across the country. The first one opened in 1953, and in the last half century Neiman Marcus has become almost as well known for its fresh and delicious cuisine as it is for its fashion.

Neiman Marcus Cookbook will delight the store’s loyal fans and food connoisseurs alike, with more than 160 delectable recipes. The exquisite dishes range from simple soups and salads such as Summer Tomato Soup with Basil and Ricotta and Mediterranean Fattoush Salad to more ambitious entrées like Burnt Honey-Orange Chicken and Soy-Glazed Farm-Raised Trout. Longtime fans will be delighted to find recipes for Neiman Marcus’s famous Strawberry Butter, Mandarin Orange Soufflé Salad, Popovers, and Chicken Salad—not to mention their legendary Chocolate Chip Cookie.

Neiman Marcus Cookbook is a celebration of a store that has been a trusted institution for nearly a century, and of a cuisine that’s been the favorite of discerning Americans for generations.

My wife is an accomplished cook. Like another reviewer from Va - She could not get the Monkey Bread and a few other Recipes to work. She only prepares food from 'scratch' and is very well versed in technique. The book is beautiful but!!!

This is one of the best cookbooks I have ever read through and used. The recipe instructions are very clear and concise, and the ingredients used are readily available. When making any one of the recipes in this book - from Turkey Meatloaf to Jambalaya to Chocolate Chip Cookies- you can be assured that you are making the very best, if not the most traditional.

This book is truly a gift to share with others. [...]

I wanted this cookbook just for the Monkey Bread recipe; they're not really popovers, you know. I am a fairly experienced cook but I could not make them work. They came out heavy and flat--tasted okay but definitely not what I expected. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?
In any case, I put the book aside after being disappointed twice. After reading your reviews, maybe I better go back and give it another chance.

                    5 out of 5 stars Truly A Classy Cookbook.......2004-04-26

NM is always been the brand that had class. Its restaurants exude this same characteristic, and as the Foreword proclaims, the brand is about: taste, elegance and flair. These three describe this recipe collection perfectly.

Do not skip the delight of reading the Foreword and Introduction which make place these recipes in the rich history of Mr. Marcus starting and coaxing on the branches restaurant's to their current rich status. Here the branches provide classic and new recipes from ten categories: Soups, Starter Salads, Small Plates, Sandwiches, Salad Entrees, Main Courses, Sides and Condiments, Desserts, Drinks, and Basics.

My actual sampling over time at their instore restaurants has been concentrated on soups, salads and small plates. This has been mainstay of their biz, so it is exciting to see the main courses added. I can tell you firsthand that the likes of the Steak Soup with Tobasco Onions and the Duke of Windsor or Rainbow Trout Sandwiches are just outstanding, as are the salads like the Tuna Pecan Salad.

Again the class they exude in taste, elegance and flair is trademark in each recipe offering. They have been perfected and thus here we receive classics like the Chocolate Chip Cookie, which contrary to all rumors is never sold or refused to be given out.

This is a marvelous, well rounded collection of various world cusines from southwestern to Middle Eastern to French to Asian, with all the trimming and condiments included. The Boursin laced Mashed Potatoes are incredible and the Apple-Red Onion Compote is a phenomenal companion to all kinds of dishes, e.g. chicken, game birds and roasts. Try their tip of using bacon fat rather than olive oil and it will render even superior taste.

This is rich, class cookbook due to unique items, spectacular layout and rich color photos and historic text. Truly a keeper and gift giving item superb worthy of the name Neiman Marcus.

                    5 out of 5 stars My all-time favorite cookbook!.......2007-05-18

A friend of mine contributed one of the recipes to this book, and gave me a copy. Upon discovering it on Amazon, I ordered copies for many friends -- all of whom love it as much as I do.

This book is a collection of recipes from Neiman-Marcus's In Circle customers -- all of which were then carefully tested in Neiman-Marcus's renowned restaurant kitchens. As a result, everything is delectable and virtually fail-safe. I have tried many of the recipes, and have been unfailingly thrilled with the results.

Best of all, most of the contributors wrote brief descriptions of what makes their recipes so special and popular -- so the book is as much fun to read as to cook from, and virtually guarantees stellar results.

Although I own well over a thousand cookbooks, this remains my number one favorite. HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATION!

This has been my favorite cookbook for a long time! Every dish Ihave made from this book has been excellent and is easy to prepare. Party Steaks are the only way to cook fillets...it's a foolproof recipe and very impressive!! Party Ryes are a fav appetizer...everyone always asks for the recipe. I have so many cookbooks but this is always the one I go to. My sister has it too and we always compare notes.

5 out of 5 stars One of my top favorite cookbooks; absolutely wonderful!.......2001-02-21

Although I have almost 2,000 cookbooks, this remains one of my all-time favorites, to which I turn again and again. I received a copy from a friend whose recipe was included in it -- and have since give copies to my own favorite people. Everything I have tried has been outstanding. The recipes were contributed by members of Neiman-Marcus's InCircle group of customers from all over the country, and almost all of the contributors included brief descriptions of the dishes, how they acquired the recipes, etc. They were then tested before publication. And all proceeds go to charity. I can't think of anything else I'd want in a cookbook -- delicious recipes, well-tested, described by the contributors, and all proceeds go to charity. And it ia a beautiful, professionally-printed book, to boot. VERY highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Cookbook Ever.......2001-02-14

This is far and away the best cookbook I have ever had the pleasure of cooking from. I am serious when I say that every recipe is wonderful and easy to assemble. There are some that have even become family staples and are made frequently. Anyone who loves to cook should have this on their shelves.

5 out of 5 stars Chock full of wonderful recipes.......1999-04-06

Pure and Simple is full of great recipes. There are so many simple recipes in this book, as the title implies, yet many are also elegant dishes that are great for serving company. My shelves are full of cookbooks, but this one is the one I use the most!

5 out of 5 stars Every recipe is a winner and I totally recommend it!.......1999-04-05

I received this book as a wedding gift 8 years ago from my little sister in my soroity. Unfortunately, it sat on my shelf for two years until I finally got around to trying one out. Well, the first recipe was easy (Lemon bars) and a hit. (which built my confidence as I wouldn't call myself The "Galloping Gournet") Anyway, every recipe I've made has been great and I wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone...."seasoned or not" in the kitchen. I especially like the chicken recipes...and the Christmas Stew has become a family tradition each Christmas Eve. I think of my sorority sister Leslie, every time I use the book and consequently thank her again each year in my Christmas card for giving me such a wonderful gift that has lasted all these years. I'm only disappointed that Neiman Marcus never came out with another one! Cheers!

I was fortunate enough to get a copy of this book for a Christmas gift when it first came out. It's a collection of contributors' favorite family recipes, with the profits going to children's charities, and you can feel the generations of warmth and love that it represents. This is food that someone's kids loved, and there's a good chance you'll find something in here that yours will love. The recipes were tested by Four Seasons chefs for ease of preparation and taste, and they cover the whole gamut, from breakfast to lunch snacks to dinner and desserts. Needless to say, you don't have to be a kid to gobble it up, everybody knows this is the best kind of food.
