In present day London, a rare, 17th-century violin is offered at auction. Two bidders in particular covet it, one of whom claims to know its "terrible story." So begins Canone Inverso, Paolo Maurensig's elliptical tale of two young men whose passion for music, and this fiddle in particular, converges in a crescendo of obsession, envy, and betrayal. Friends who meet at music school in prewar Austria, Jeno and Kuno come from very different worlds: one the illegitimate son of a sausage maker, and the other the heir to a baronetcy. But together they share an obsessive devotion to music. Alas, what begins as a dance of soul mates--"We were like brothers, not in flesh or blood, but in that part of the spirit where order, rhythm, and harmony are found"--ends badly, the brutal disintegration of their relationship eerily paralleling Germany's decent into Nazi madness. Maurensig offers up a mesmerizing allegory (good against evil, brother against brother), peeling away layer after layer, only to reveal yet another bizarre reality: "Behind the refined music we hear, performed with levity and perfection by and orchestra or a string quartet, there is the straining of nerves, the gushing of blood, the breaking of hearts." --Marianne Painter

Book Description

Canone Inverso has the structure and resonance of an intricate piece of music, leading up to a devastating finale. A strangely carved, beautiful violin accompanies two generations of artists from Hungary, torn by World War I, to Vienna awaiting the Nazi Anschluss. Mysteriously, the violin reappears in an auction at Christie's in present-day London.

Propelled by the prophecy that all musicians are the descendants of Cain, the story centers on two friends: a bastard peasant boy burdened with a great talent and the only heir to an Austrian aristocratic family desperately clinging to the prerogatives of noble birth. Theirs is the age-old tale of the doppelgnger reimagined: companions, perhaps brothers, and, inevitably, lethal enemies.

The lives of the main characters intertwine in a mysterious and magical fugue, in which music is at once threat and consolation. Immortality, history, and an all-consuming passion come to play in this artfully layered, erudite narrative. Maurensig's sensuous prose brings to life an age, an art, and the spirit of music.

4 out of 5 stars A bit frustrating..........2005-06-06

As a reader, I loved this book. I thought it was exciting, and the device of having the main story filter in through different narrators was ingenius. I was drawn to this book because there was a giant picture of a violin on the cover, and the inclusion of Bach's "Chaconne" for solo violin on the inside cover gave me further hope that this would be a book where the author acutally knew something about the "classical music" he was going to write about.

However, speaking as a musician, I have to say that I was frustrated, irritated and sometimes offended by the fact that Maurensig seemed to think he needed to include every negative stereotype against musicians in his narrative. From Jeno's inability to feel for his grieving stepfather because he can only think of practicing, to the baritone who was evicted from his apartment because he couldn't pay rent, to the boot-camp atmosphere in the conservatory he studied at, to the teachers there who were trapped in their own mediocrity...oh believe me, it's all there, and there's even more where that came from. As a warning to other musicians who want to read this book: keep a sense of humor!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Novels..........2004-02-08

This book is amazingly written with descriptions that will blow your mind. By the first chapter, I was completely enveloped into the story, and by the end I was completely floored by it. To Kill a Mockingbird USED to be my favorite book, but now, I'm not so sure. If you do not pick this one up - musician or not - you're missing out on something delicious.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, excellent novel about music.......2002-07-06

I've written very few reviews on Amazon only because I haven't felt that strongly about a book or CD. This one is different. It is a wonderful novel about two men and their passion for music. It reminded me of a music version of Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray," in its descriptions of the passion for music (as "Dorian" has passion for art.) The descriptions of music, immortality, friendship and the underlying theme of the coming of the Nazis are all very powerful. (I think kudos to the translator are appropriate.) I love books about music or art and the violin is my favorite instrument. I read it in two days, not able to put it down until I finished it in the wee hours of the morning. Maybe I should have figured it out, but the surprise ending was a surprise to me. If you are at all interested in classical music you must read this book. One of the best books I've read in a long time (and I've read some really good ones lately!)

5 out of 5 stars Exotic Clockwork, by fermed.......2002-05-07

My preference in novels is for books that are realistic and mirror the society in which they take place; I like to enter the universes created by writers, with the single proviso that such places must be believable enough to totally absorb me. So I was surprised by having to give (in all fairness) this novel its five stars despite its violation of my verisimilitude requirements.

But in truth, this is not a novel, but a carefully crafted mechanical device composed entirely of words, intricate and at times unfathomably complex, but one that moves and has rhythms, its gears engaged, every "tick" followed by its inevitable "tock;" a machine that works and is probably extremely accurate in what it does, even though, in the end, one is not sure what it is that it does.

I appreciated the warnings from other reviewers that the book may need to be read twice before it is fully grasped; a violation of general principles: the writer should have one chance to engage our attention, not two. Yet Canone Inverso was surely better in its re-reading.

It is a short book, consumable in one sitting. Its prose is exquisite, its translation so good that one does not notice it, and its effect on the reader's mind is galvanizing. Exotic, intricate, playing with dangerous themes of good and evil, of trust and hatred, of life and death, this confection is not a toy, but a serious intrument of reflection. A joy for seekers of word pleasures.

5 out of 5 stars AN ENGROSSING, HARD-TO-PUT-DOWN TALE.......2002-04-10

Paolo Maurensig's second novel, CANONE INVERSO, is told in the form of an oral history of an oral history -- it is a dark story, but a compelling and human one.

After purchasing an unusually beautiful antique violin at an auction, the buyer is visited in his hotel room by a mysterious stranger. The man tells him that he was planning to bid on the instrument himself, but was unable to arrive at the auction in time. Noticing a strangeness about the man, along with a seemingly emotional attachment to the instrument, the buyer inquires further, and the man begins to tell the story of the violin -- which involves his retelling of an older story, told to him by the instrument's former owner, sitting at a sidewalk cafe table in Vienna, long ago.

The story is an unusual and gripping one -- I found this novel especially hard to set aside, and finished it the day after I started it (I had to force myself to go to bed). The story told by the man in Vienna involves himself and another boy -- both musical prodigies -- who met while attending a prestigious musucal institute in Austria just before the outbreak of World War II. The talent that the two boys shared draws them together into a long and difficult friendship -- and the novel has much to say, cloaked within its gripping story, of the nature of friendship, its blessings as well as its pitfalls.

Maurensig's prose is liquid and beautiful, reproducing perfectly the sense of an oral history. As the story unfolds before the reader's eyes -- and into the listener's ears -- aspects of the boys' lives are revealed like new days dawning over time. This is some very effective storytelling. At the heart of their lives is their love of music -- and they each love it in different ways, for different reasons.

The conclusion of the story is not altogether unexpected, but neither is it telegraphed in an obvious way -- Maurensig's talents are obvious and formidable, making this book a great joy to experience. I look forward to reading his first novel, THE LUNEBERG VARIATIONS.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Dull as the "Gravelight".......2004-04-28

Don't expect anything original or unpredictable in Marion Zimmer Bradley's occult fantasy "Gravelight." It's strictly by-the-numbers, slow to action, repetitive and brimming over with characters either unsympathic or simply annoying. Sure she can turn a phrase, but she didn't stop turning.

Promising actress/telepath Sinah Dellon came to the tiny hick town of Morton's Fork looking for info on her birth mother. Not only does nobody want to admit her mother lived there, but Sinah becomes the local pariah. Elsewhere, rich-boy alcoholic Wycherly Musgrave crashes his car, and takes up temporary residence in Morton's Fork. The residents think he's a magical "conjureman," but all he wants to do is be left alone with his booze and nightmares.

Meanwhile, Truth Jourdemayne, her fiancee and a pair of psychics are coming to Morton's Fork, and Truth is getting a bad feeling about something to come. Sinah and Wycherly meet and explore a sanatorium that burned down in the early 1900s -- which is somehow connected to Sinah's ancestors. The problem is, sinister powers are starting to hijack their thoughts.

Bradley took a sloppy mishmash of occultism, mythology (such as her hideous misuse of "sidhe" mythos), and the a few of the flashier New Age trappings, and cooked them together into a half-baked fantasy novel. It's pretty much by-the-numbers -- here's the Mysterious Ancestry! The Hidden Chambers! The Magical Bloodline! The Sinister Cult! The Voices In Their Heads! The Evil Magic! The Good Magic! Even a quickie on an evil altar!

In "Gravelight," it feels like Bradley didn't have the slightest idea how to fill in the middle of the book. The character spend too much time wondering if they're crazy (or in Wycherly's case, thinking about booze). Bradley has a lovely writing style, but it becomes repetitive. For example, Wycherly has a recurring dream about the woman he accidently killed dragging him into the river. The first time, it's powerful. But she keeps reusing the dream so often that it loses its power.

And the characters aren't much better than the writing. Either they're good and dull (Sinah and Truth) or they are jerks (Wycherly) with no redeeming features. The Morton's Fork residents are portrayed as inbred rednecks, and Truth's coworkers have no personalities. It's hard to tell why we're supposed to care about any of these people.

"Gravelight" is a plodding, staggering piece of cliched occult fantasy. Like a balloon with a tear, it deflates as soon as it puffs itself up.

5 out of 5 stars Third Time is a Charmer.......2001-01-04

When I met Wycherly Musgrave, Winter's brother, in WITCHLIGHT, he seemed like just one more thoroughly unlikeable member of a unlikeable and dysfunctional family. In GRAVELIGHT I learned that he's probably the only other member of the family who's worthwhile. Unlike his sister's adventure of the mind, we don't have to wait three-quarters of the book to find out what he's running from. Yes, he has good reason for hating himself. It was interesting to find out what happened to the Musgraves. Too bad that Wycherly is the only other sibling to break away. Will he find the truth and shall it set him free? GRAVELIGHT starts out with a chapter that sets us up for what is to come. Quentin Blackburn certainly misjudged the will of his lover, Athanais Dellon. Unfortunately, Attie didn't succeed in wiping out his evil influence. Unlike the first two books, this one changes viewpoint from character to character before tying everything together. This enabled the author to accomplish more than she could have by sticking with any one character. I enjoyed learning about Athanais and present-day Melusine ("Sinah") Dellon's self-serving ancestress and the origin of the Dark Brooding Evil Menace in Morton's Fork [great name!]. I enjoyed seeing Truth Jourdemayne and Dylan Palmer again, although the reversal of their believer-skeptic roles made me worry that they wouldn't be together by the end. I think Ms. Bradley chose wisely in the manner in which she resolved the problem. However I didn't understand why there should be any trouble between Truth and another character in GHOSTLIGHT who makes an appearance here and I still don't. Little nugget of information: according to one of the many catalogs that clutter up my mailbox, those little bricks of Fels-Naptha that Truth wonders about in chapter five are heavy-duty laundry soap. Just as I found the climax of GRAVELIGHT more powerful and satisfying than that of its predecessors, I think this book has the most powerful and evocative cover. With the other two, I don't think it would matter much if the paperback cover doesn't include the entire wraparound design of the hardcover's dustjacket, but in this case it would. I love the glimpse of the ruined sanatorium with the light streaming through and around it!

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but clichéd.......2000-08-25

Bradley is undeniably one of the great craftspeople of fantastic settings; and her strong female characters are always a refereshing change from the status quo.

I would not, however, consider Gravelight to be one of her more stellar achievements. Although the story line is engrossing, the characters are just a little too stereotypical and the theology/magic system a tad too clichéd. The ending, likewise, is somewhat predictable and pat.

Were it most other author, this book would have received 3 stars. Nevertheless, the Bradley touches (particularly the emphasisi on the female characters) are sufficient to make this a respectable read for anyone who enjoys the genre. As always, Bradley manages to make you want to read to the end; even if you are pretty what that will be.

3 out of 5 stars Very Well Written With Great Characters But Same Old Plot.......1999-06-21

For some reason, all the MZB books I choose end up having the same plot: there's some dark underground sacrificial alter where dark forces are summoned & it's cramping the style of our heroines. Nevertheless I didn't mind as much this time because the main character's struggle with alcoholism and indulgent self-hatred was so brilliantly drawn. In fact, all of the characters and the way they related when they met were totally captivating. But like I've said before--oh no, not that whole lame devil worship plot again! This book would have deserved five stars had the supernatural possession happened more originally.

5 out of 5 stars captivating modern-day tale of magic and the tormented soul.......1999-01-20

winter musgrave's free-drinking brother makes his entrance driving as fast as he can from his dysfunctional family ,fears of a deceased girlfriend and his own guilty conscience...but he cannot escape the past or himself...he finds himself in a sinister small town living in the home of the local deceased witch, and is believed to be a "conjureman"...nearby a ruined sanitorium lures him to a legacy of evil...and he comes to face with an equally tormented actress who is in town to try to find her roots, which is difficult for her since the town is shunning her...was her family so evil??...the actress is also frightened by her own natural telepathic abilities...is this why her family was so hated no one will speak to her?...was her mother like this too???....anything you guess comes nowhere close to the frightening truth that awaits her and wycherly at the sanitorium...and truth jourdemayne and dylan palmer are in for it too as they take a couple of young psychics to the small town to investigate the large number of disappearances that seem to be centered around the crumbling sanitorium!...lots of chills await the reader with every turn of the "wheel"...awesome reading for a stormy night....enjoy!!!

4 out of 5 stars After all this build up, nothing really special.......2001-12-13

This final volume of the Mutant saga continues the story of Rick and Julian Akimura and their half-sister Alanna. Years have passed since Mutant Star, and Rick has spent this time living in the desert of America's Southwest, using his amazing powers to help ordinary people, and trying to atone for his father's death. Over time he has accumulated a cadre of devoted followers, and formed the quasi-religious service organization known as Better World. Rick's twin brother Julian is worried that Rick can't handle the pressures of fame, power, and success, while the Mutant Council fears a backlash against all who possess psychic abilities. Alanna is still trying to deal with her own frustrations, and finds solace in serving Rick, but finds him just as aloof as ever. Is Rick's utopian vision doomed to failure? Can Julian and Alanna accept their new positions in Rick's life? Will sinister forces at work within the Mutant Council put an end to Better World forever? Or will the non-mutant populace revolt against those who would manipulate their minds?

While less irritating than Mutant Star and more noteworthy than Mutant Prime, this book suffers from being rather slow. The flashback structure eliminates any real suspense the story might have had, so while the narrator tediously describes each minor event that builds up to the climax, the reader, who already knows what's going to happen, may be anxious to get on with it. A lot of space is devoted to Julian's ideological transformation, as might befit a novel of ideas; but instead of a clear discussion of the serious philosophical issues it raises, Haber gives us a star-crossed love story that ignores the very real objections one might have to allowing humanity to effectively become a subject race.

Certainly anyone who enjoyed the first three Mutant books should be happy enough with this conclusion; it has the same sharp characterizations leavened with internal turmoil and romantic sexuality, but readers who thought the original Mutant Season was 'just okay' won't find any great revelations that justify reading the whole series.

4 out of 5 stars Mutant teens face discrimination, family problems, too.......2001-08-17

In this, the first of a four volume series, we are introduced to an offshoot of the human race who are called the Mutants. Ostensibly hidden from the rest of humanity for centuries, the race of golden-eyed espers has finally chosen to reveal themselves. The story picks up several decades later, after the initial years of unrest and persecution have subsided somewhat; and while legal protections exist, prejudice against the mutants is still very strong in a populace that both envies and fears them. Against this backdrop Haber tells the story of one very active mutant family, the Rytons, and one "normal", Andie Greenberg, chief assistant to the only mutant Senator.

If you can swallow the outlandish premise (for which Silverberg must accept responsibility) Haber has written a fairly entertaining novel. The basic technique is a long series of short scenes from each of several subplots, some of which converge, and others of which will presumably be picked up later in the series, but which together paint a fairly credible portrait of life in a world with Mutants. The real strength of this book is the characterizations, which reflect a familiar variety of reactions to racial prejudice, but also show that life is pretty much the same even with telepathic or telekinetic powers. Young Michael Ryton struggles against his domineering father's conservative insularism, while his "null" sister Melanie feels ignored and uncared-for, and their cousin Skerry is

unattached, uncontrollable, and undependable. Andie Greenberg is the only normal who is followed closely, but in the end she proves to be the real hero, providing the key to defusing the crisis that evolves when the mutant Senator pushes for sweeping changes in mutant's rights.

While the round robin plot structure keeps the reader interested, there are spots where the plot advances very slowly. There are engaging characters of both sexes, but so much of the focus is on young people that boyfriends and girlfriends and sexual encounters and adolescent angst seem to fill most of the book. As a result, some adult readers might find this material difficult to relate to, while the fairly explicit sexuality makes it inappropriate for young readers. Young women interested in sci-fi fantasy should find this book especially appealing; the rest of us can hope that the next book in the series will be a little more grown up.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific science fiction!.......2000-04-06

The first of a promised four-book series, The Mutant Season is a recognizably traditional sf novel complete with heros, villains, civilizations to save and its own measure of triumphs and tragedies. It narrates the long-established theme of a point just past the introduction of mutant telepaths into the near future of earth as we know it. By the time of this first novel, mutants have transcended early persecution in the 1990s and come out guardedly to battle for acceptance and perhaps integration. The plot of the first novel depends on two alternate models of humanity's future as a mutant/non-mutant cooperation. Since the story is told mostly from the Mutant society's point of view, both models are theirs, although one is clearly unacceptable to non-mutants. Major players are both mutant and non-mutant. Andie is non-mutant assistant to the first mutant senator, Ms. Jacobsen. She and Senator Jacobsen are both striving to bring about peaceful integration of mutants into the dominant culture and this is the model of coexistence that is privileged in the novel, but is briefly subverted by the predictable mutant-supremacy group, some of whom also have hopes of creating a strain of super-mutants. Andie believes in and wants to assist the birth of cooperation model, so, when Senator Jacobsen is killed, she agrees to work with Jacobsen's mutant successor, Senator Jeffers, who becomes her lover. Yet she is able to transcend this seduction and unmask his unacceptable plans when necessary. Another mutant/non-mutant pair are lovers - Kelly, a talented non-mutant and Michael, scion of an important mutant family, are doomed to separation by social forces that will not countenance such a union. Michael is forced into a marriage with another mutant which he tries to appreciate but the novel leaves Kelly escaping into a military career as a pilot, and very much dissatisfied with the situation. Michael's sister and cousin present alternatives to his fate. While he allows himself to be incorporated into the mutant group's plans for the future, his multi-talented cousin, who has already left out of disgust, makes it clear that he scorns their plans. Michael's sister, although mutant in appearance, (they have gold eyes), is unable to use any psionic powers and escapes, through disguise, into the straight world. It is with this uneasy vacuum of futures that novel one ends. However, to reassure the reader that more threads will be tied together, a few pages of the next novel are included. The characters and plot of this novel are engaging, but the reader should be ready for and interested in the long haul which will take her/him through all four books.

I really enjoy reading Debbie Brown's book she has great ideas for any occasion. I also get a lot of great info from Vondre and Andreaetta from Sell Cakes Like Crazy on the Internet.

this book is so fun. i am not a cake baker(i plan to take a wilton class or two) but i like to craft. i bought the book for fimo clay ideas. it is wonderful. my daughters (8 and 14) and i have made some of the cakes into clay figurines. it's taken some creativity on our part but these are beautiful pictures and great instructions.

                        5 out of 5 stars great idea!!.......2007-03-26

This book has explained very well how to make it just like what in the book. I found one thing missing is it doesn't tell you about stroage.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and so much fun!.......2007-03-12

I adore this book and had such a hard time choosing which cake to make first. I am a hobby cake decorator and found the cakes reasonable to do. The directions are very clear, but if you are not familiar with some of the techniques, it will take some practice working with the fondant and cake to get the perfect looking cake. My children are constantly flipping through the pages and picking out their next Birthday cakes a year away.
