5 out of 5 stars Terrific volume!.......2004-01-25

The only problem I can see in this volume is the fight at the beginning. It is a little hard to read. The panels don't seem flipped right in a few instances. Manji, though, fights his toughest opponent yet. There are quite a few badguys in the itto-ryu that have a reputation besides Anotsu. Higa is one of those guys who has his own personality. I noticed one faded drawing in BOTI a while back. It was suppose to be kinda hard to see, but you can make out some of the people. I think it was DREAMSONG. The itto-ryu were all standing and you saw Anotsu in the center. To the right are Magatsu, and others who are too hard to define. To his left are what I think to be Higa, and, again, others who are too hard to define. Higa definietly earns a spot next to Anotsu seeing as how Manji can NOT keep up with him.

Hyakurin and Shinriji have some parts. I never read the first volume, but there is a guy who knows Manji. I am not quite familiar with him. Anywho, this novel is pretty cool. there are a lot of fights, a really cool badguy, and a neat segment on weapons at the end. Great book! Get volume one first. Next is SECRETS if my memory serves me correct.

5 out of 5 stars The Unkindest Cuts.......2002-10-01

Readers please note that this review is specific to Part Two of the 'The Gathering.' [online store] has decided to treat the two volumes as if they were the same, which is unfortunate. While nothing written here really reveals and significant plot details that would hurt your enjoyment of the first volume, I do suggest you read my previous review first.

Having managed to get over my confusion at finding myself directly in the middle of the action in the previous volume, I somehow expected that its sequel would be easier to manage. After all, I had done my homework and discovered what Hiroaki Samura's real story arcs were, and I had even stolen a few peeks at the first few manage. I allowed this to give me a sense of false confidence as I picked up this volume.

What I was unprepared for was that fully on half of this volume is a detailed study of a fight between Manji and three opponents. This battle started in the previous volume and reaches genuinely heroic proportions as Manji is slowly chopped to bits. Apparently, this is standard operating procedure for the immortal samurai, who manages to survive injuries that would have made short work of a vampire. Since we know Manji will survive - the manga is his story - we are pushed right up to the point where all the hacking and slashing seems a bit funny.

The story of Rin's own efforts to get to Kaga and seek vengeance for her father's death is far less violent. The swordswoman seeks the aid of an innkeeper and his wife, hoping that she may masquerade as a relative in order to pass through the control point between Edo and Kaga. She discovers that this will take more than simple subterfuge and must use all her resources of courage to make her way.

While I cannot help but pick on a series of extraordinarily violent episodes, but the truth is that Samura's art remains at a consistently high level, regardless of subject matter. In addition, he displays a great depth of knowledge of 18th century Japan. I find the subtext of the competition between sword schools and the stratification of Japanese society eye opening, much more vivid than what the history books provide. While the story is uniquely Japanese in its telling it appeals to values of indomitable will and courage which are admirable anywhere. This continues to be a masterful series.

if you are jus getting into this series u need to start from the begining. with a glance of the first paperback edition it might seem like a manga with lots of violence and gore, which is what got me into this manga. however, as you progress into the manga many characters began to take form and start to develope in the most interesting way.

the manga delve into human perceptions, at times the bad guys seems good, and the good guys are just bad. i feel its a great representation of our society as it is.

the drawing is done in rough lines, but with that it makes the characters to seems alive. espiecially in a fight sequence it adds the feeling of motion to it. there is also couple superbe drawing of finishing moves, quite dramatic.

overall this manga is a most have, even my girlfriend who is not into manga enjoy reading it. right now im waiting for the next installment, whihc is a drawback cause u gota wait for the new installments.

A rising young attorney has everything going for him, until he makes one small mistake and covers it up with one small white lie. But that's only the beginning of one the most addictive novels of psychological suspense in years, as a decent man is driven deeper and deeper into the quicksand of his own deception...

            Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Too Much Fat.......2004-12-05

There's a blurb on the hardcover jacket that says "...The Immortal Part is that rare thing--a genuine literary thriller." Yes, you could say this has literary qualities. It definitely aspires to be more than a straight suspense novel. Unfortunately, in doing so, it loses the qualities that make for an exciting, page-turning read. Oh, I was turning pages all right--mostly to skip over extraneous descriptions, flashbacks, unnecessary character studies, and, worst of all, dream sequences. If there's anything more annoying than listening to a real person tell you their dreams (well, unless it's about you), it's reading a fictitious character's dreams. Okay, once maybe, briefly. But repeatedly and at length? I skipped over every one of those and didn't miss anything in the plot.

I do like the premise: The private and professional worlds of an ambitious, though rather ordinary, young lawyer intersect and ultimately collide in a strange and unexpected way. It's about character flaws, the law of unintended consequence, and the eerie power of coincidence.

Wakling begins the story promisingly enough. The hero's minor missteps that lead into an ever deepening quagmire are human and believable. We can all identify with making a mistake and then foolishly trying to fix it, rather than simply coming clean. As the old saw goes, "what a tangled web, etc."

However, this is not a unique concept on it's own. So what Wakling does is create a second web that by sheer chance becomes entangled with the first. There's a symbolism here along the lines of Greek tragedy, but I don't know that drama is served. The more he cuts back and forth between the two worlds, the more the story loses its momentum. Wakling wants to immerse us in the psychology of his characters, so we end up with a lot of scenes that do little to move the plot forward--scenes from the protagonist's childhood, scenes with his parents, scenes from his unconscious. At the same time, he leaves out information that would hint at the eventual outcome. In fact, the ending is a bit disappointing, given the possibilities.

Christopher Wakling has considerable talent, and this is an admirable debut, but next time, buddy, try to keep it leaner and meaner. Less portraiture, more story.

4 out of 5 stars out of the blocks.......2004-04-21

I have to be honest here and declare that I would normally avoid anything that might be, even remotely, touched with the 'corporate' or 'legal' thriller tag. I just think eek! Grisham and go into shutdown mode. Not my thang, not my thang at all. Still, I came to 'The Immortal Part' by a slightly odd route and after a little investigation became intrigued, and so it found itself at the top of my list. And a jolly good thing too.

Intentions are trumpeted from the first lines, the now well-quoted "Thirteen days ago I made a mistake. A momentary slip, but enough to launch me into freefall, a life unravelling in my wake."

Indeed, we're given a sketch of our narrator before we even turn that first page: Lewis Penn, mid-twenties, successful business lawyer with ginormous London law firm Madison & Vere, a penchant for detail; a deal striker, a note-taker, a pen pusher, a man taking the middle ground to get to the higher plains the conventional way. Half a dozen pages later and the 'momentary slip' happens. Entrusted with a file of confidential papers, Lewis loses them and tries to cover his tracks rather than admit his error.

And essentially that's all you need to know, because the details of circumstance are ultimately of little importance. All you really need to be aware of is that Lewis has mucked up, and royally. Every step he takes bounces him further and further into touch, but our interest - and this is where Wakling diverts smartly away from the roller coaster ride of your ten-a-penny-dreadful first novel tyros - relies less and less on events and much more critically on the moral and psychological rewiring his fallible protagonist is forced to undertake. It also helps that what we have here is good writing, neat turns of phrase and something with substantial literary merit behind it. Wakling a) knows what he's talking about and b) enjoys describing it.

Anyway ... increasingly, steadily, Lewis's paranoia begins to take hold. He can only confide in one person, his dying brother, Dan, but as Lewis's life begins to fall apart, it appears that Dan's is also coloured by deception. The graceless, faltering arc takes Lewis from London to Washington DC and back to London, but every move he makes, every decision he reaches is the wrong one, and when his home is turned upside down, he becomes convinced he is being pursued.

Lewis, a man keen on detail, is following a career path that makes (...) retention a godly virtue. One tiny step outside the circle and the architecture creaks. One further step, and another, and it crumbles. In a way it reminded me of the best of Cronenberg, a man also keen to prove that beneath a tiny veneer of skin there's a world of horror waiting for us. As a study of human foibles, with an all too imperfect hero at its core, a clever take on identity and something significantly removed from what you might expect, 'The Immortal Part' is a considerable achievement.

5 out of 5 stars Danger High Voltage Fiction.......2003-05-31

An aromatic crispy duck of a debut novel from this promising new talent. A young British lawyer wades into moral quicksand when advising Eastern European mafia on the finer aspects of international tax law. A simple mistake and the rolling stone is gathering more moss than you would find in the most unkempt of English Country gardens.

'Serves you right for being a self-serving amoral greed-bucket', one is tempted to think...but doesn't everyone deserve just a little redemption? Fortunately, fate steps in to deal a lesson in the futility of struggle against the better self.

Amidst the money, power and beautiful Ukrainian ladies, Wakling has delivered a novel of sharp psychological and moral insight that makes you want to quit your job in the city and take up writing.

A great book and an even better read.

5 out of 5 stars The Immortal Part.......2003-05-14

Excellent read - beautifully written and a thrilling plot. The new Ernest Hemmingway.

5 out of 5 stars masterful work of psychological suspense.......2003-04-14

He is a junior lawyer at Madison & Vane, a very prominent English firm, helping one of the senior attorneys working on a brief that would advise UKI on the refinancing of two of its subsidiaries through U.S. investors. Lewis Penn is a very methodical, by the book lawyer who is successful because he doesn't make mistakes. At the meeting, he makes a very good impression but he makes what will ultimately prove to be a fatal error when he walks out without taking the file.

Instead of admitting his blunder, he sneaks back into the meeting room and takes the file and makes a copy to be sent to his counterpart in the United States. When he gets a chance to look at the file, he realizes it is the wrong one. It contains criminal information that the client would never give away and when they learn of the error they make it plain to Lewis that he must return the file or suffer the very real consequences.

THE IMMORTAL PART is the story of a decent man who makes the wrong decision to keep from getting into trouble with his company. One small error in judgment plunges him into a whirlpool leading to additional poor indiscretions and the comission of some criminal acts. The protagonist learns too late that every action has its consequences that often can't be fixed or changed. Christopher Wakling has written a masterful work of psychological suspense.

I like this character in the first book and am glad she wrote the sequel about her. The history of the Harvey Houses is incredible! This is a well written story with romance and intrigue, just the way I like it!

                  4 out of 5 stars A wonderful book.......2001-11-17

I finished this book in only a few hours because it was so good. Ms. Peterson is able to draw you into her characters' lives from the beginning. In this book, Rachel (from a "Shelter of Hope") is faced with the trial of working with the man she was engaged to six years ago. With the added frustration of missing inventory, a scheming girl, and an overbearing landlady, Rachel has her hands full. However, by learning to trust again and not giving in when things look their worst, Rachel is able to move forward with her life.

Simone & Jeffrey O'Donnell, the main characters in "Shelter of Hope" play only minor roles in this novel, but the reader is given a look into their life--allowing for the first story to come to its full conclusion.

Hidden in a Whisper is a great book. I read the entire thing in one day. Never a dull moment. Along with the main plot, there is a mystery too, which makes it even more enjoyable!

Rachel is secure in her job as manager of the new Casa Grande Resort and Harvey House, yet she is empty and unfulfilled. She always wanted to be married, have kids and be a devoted wife. But, 6 yrs. ago she gave up that dream after her one and only love, Braedon, was seen in a compromising spot. She never forgot him and never loved again. How is she supposed to react when she learns she will work closely with HIM again? Old feelings come to the surface - doubts remain intact. Unable to believe, not daring to trust, she almost misses what God has planned for her benefit. As often occurs, there is one person who seems to be at the center of every catastrophe, every scene, and this employee is bent on winning Braedon's heart. It looks for a time that the world will crush down on Rachel before she learns to trust God and Braedon. Will their love withstand tragedy, heartbreak and treachery? This book is a continuation of the same characters in the first book, with emphasis away from Simone and Jeffery and featuring Rachel.

From the Gamma quadrant they came -- hordes of fierce Jem'Hadar warriors commanded by the mysterious Changelings, who will stop at nothing to achieve victory over both the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon™ Empire. Now that the Dominion has entered into an unholy alliance with the Cardassian military regime and seized control of Deep Space Nine™, Starfleet finds itself fighting a losing war against unbeatable odds. As mighty fleets clash in the deadly battleground of space, the fate of the entire Alpha Quadrant hangs in the balance.

The Enterprise-E is patrolling the Cardassian border, bracing for the joint Dominion-Cardassian offensive that Starfleet knows will come soon, when Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his crew are reunited with a former crewmate, friend, and enemy: Ro Laren. The onetime officer, who defected from Starfleet to join the rebel Maquis, brings disturbing news. Deep behind enemy lines, the Dominion is attempting to build an artificial wormhole that will allow them to bypass the mined Bajoran wormhole and bring fresh reinforcements into the Alpha Quadrant, altering the balance of power irrevocably. If Captain Picard cannot stop the project, the new wormhole will guarantee the ultimate victory of the Dominion!

4 out of 5 stars Good book, well-written........2004-05-02

This book succeeds at what it sets out to be: an excellent action-based story set during the Dominion War against the Cardassians and the Founders. It makes little to no attempt to be more than that, so if you're in the mood for something more than a good action story, this isn't what you're looking for. But if that's what you're in the mood for, this will do just fine.

4 out of 5 stars Picard and Ro reunited? It worked for me........2003-12-25

First, books 1 and 3 should really be part 1 of the Dominion War, and books 2 and 4, part 2 (or vice-versa) since there is no overlap between the two whatsoever. I agree that it was a little questionable of Picard to let Ro off so easily and 'welcome' her back, but it is understandable given the context of the Dominion War and the Federation losing thus far. Crusher and Troi are virtually ignored. Riker is his typical self, macking on a woman. Data kicks ass alone, though I wish more of his inner thoughts were explored. Geordi is good, but Ro and Picard and Sam Lavelle steal the show. Grof's character is well written and evokes an emotional response. Picard is his usual brilliant self and Ro evokes the same strong character as on the series. The cover of the books (all four) are rather misleading (esp. the 4th), but I don't agree that books 1 and 3 are lacking when viewed in the context of the Dominion War. Books 2 and 4 are where the gusto is, where we see some of the Federation Fleet attack some of the Dominion fleet. Books 1 and 3 are the small scale level of undercover ops about what has to be done to save the quadrant. Both series (1&3, 2&4) are essential turning points in the War, and I'm very glad to see that Picard was his usual brilliant self saving the entire Quadrant... yet again. If either Sisko or Picard had failed, while the other succeeded, it would all be for nought, which makes this 4 part series somewhat intertwined. Personally I prefered books 1&3 to 2&4 since 2&4 were for the most part taken straight from the TV show. My only complaint, why does the Enterprise drop shields to fire her quantum torpedoes? Answer: she doesn't, or at least she shouldn't!

                                  4 out of 5 stars In For A Penny..........2003-08-03

As one of the first novels by John Vornholt, I really enjoyed the start of this adventure. This is the first review I will write after completing this book, but will come back and revise it after I have completed the series.

I was overjoyed to see the return of some of my favorite minor characters. The return of Sam Lavelle and Taurik from the Next Generation Episode "Lower Decks" as prisoners of war fighting for their lives and their freedom. We also see Ro Laren return to the Federation to continue on with the good fight.

The development of Data and Riker in this novel showed unexpected twists and turns. The loneliness of duty and the personal losses people suffer during tragic times played a wonderful but somber reprieve from the action filled development of Picard and Ro.

Going back after the completion of the Next Generation movies, the finale of Deep Space Nine, and the re-launch of the Deep Space Nine novels, I question where the development of characters should be. The expansion of the Ro character in this story arc has been well done but I reserve how well the transition from the end of this arc to the beginning of Avatar by S.D. Perry. To read my final say on the matter, jump over to the review of the final novel in this arc.

3 out of 5 stars Books were not as important as I thought they would be........2003-05-26

When I saw this seies I bought all the books. The dominion war is referred to a number of Star Trek books with little detail. The 2 Shatner Trilogies refer to it as well. And, of course the TV shows dealt with it.

I figured that with four books to accomplish to job, I would get a "full" understanding and description of the Dominion war. It doesn't happen. These books offer little and are not important to the Star Trek story.

Books one and three are with the TNG characters. I don't care for TNG books that have little or no participation of my second favorite character DATA. (guess how i feel about nemesis?) Books 2 and 4 are with the DS9 characters and seem to offer little that you haven't seen.

Riker spends the entire book in space dock romancing a lunatic bureaucrat. Data sits on a lifeless planet doing nothing.

Worf still hasn't married Jax or whoever she is this week. Ron Laran falls for a guy named Sam?

Books 1 and 3 rate a 3.5 star and books 2 and 4 rate a 2.5 for an average of 3. But if you are interested in buying books to fill in fun details about the dominion war, they haven't been written yet.

Maybe Michael Stackpole and Aaron Allston can get together and write a good series about the Dominion War.

4 out of 5 stars Finally the Dominion.......2003-03-02

Since I began reading a variety of Star Trek Books it became clear that The Dominion War was a central event. Virtually all of the books I had read referred to the war with The Dominion, so it was clear this 4 part series was important to putting many other books in their proper perspective,

The second in the series is going to switch to the setting of Deep Space 9 but this first book spends its time initially with The Enterprise TNG crew and then introduces many characters from episodes of The Next Generation television series. Many of these players have become slaves constructing a weapon that is arguably the most lethal of any man-made object imaginable when used by a species like the Jem-Hadar. The device can also be harmless and productive, think of an airport or interstate highway, hard to do without but when turned in to transport for weapons and destruction their function can be even more powerful for evil than good.

Ro Laren was always one of my favorite characters that disappeared from the television series never to return. She is back in this book, and judging from the storyline she will play a prominent role in his story arc. She has also appeared in the Deep Space 9 series Avatar, so I hope she has made a more or less permanent return.

The Federation is in the midst of a war and a pretty severe beating when Ro Laren once again finds herself face to face with the captain she once betrayed. Captain Picard makes decisions that are would be unique if made by other captains, but he tends to make decisions despite, in this case, his second officer Riker all but physically restraining him. And thus begins one of the most motley crews ever to man any transport and to take it to the most forbidding areas of a war, and then to an area behind enemy lines.

An interesting side story is the mission that Data takes on his own, a task that no conventional life form could ever fulfill. Data has plenty of work but he also finds he has plenty of time to reflect and philosophize on how he deals with war versus his human counterparts. His emotion chip is at his control, and he constantly makes evaluations as to whether or not it should be on or off. One of the questions he arrives at is how do his friends remain sane during war? Again an interesting time for Data and while not a major portion of the book, a storyline that is sure to be continued.

This is a nice cookbook, but more for looks than for novice to close to chef status.....very hard and long recipes. The food looks great, but coming from the restaurants and with the list of restaurants, you may as well just fly there and visit the place and eat at them, than try to cook them.
