Brilliant.......2005-05-21
Halfway through this book, I knew I had to get my hands on anything by JPD out there. It is that good. Laugh out loud funny. IMO the gents will enjoy this more than their female counterparts. This book went down like a super fine singlemalt scotch on a warm fall evening. One of the finest works these eyeballs have viewed. And they have seen much. Not to be missed.

george smith is a lot like donleavy's other protagonists in that he seems to have the outer trappings of refinement and composure while actively unravelling from the inside out.
the book, for the most part, is entertaining, though donleavy does tend to dip into his flights of self-indulgent fancy a bit too often for my taste. still, donleavy has his chops and manages to make things funny along the way.
"the lady who liked clean restrooms" is much better--and, of course, "the ginger man." this new one "sunrise on moonville" reminds me of a leaner, snappier donleavy as well. it's a good read, too.

Having visciously ensnared every opinion as yet posted upon this board, I am inclined to agree.
I also am of the opinion that this is the greatest book that I have ever read only just after the beastly beatitudes (also by JPD). And, I too wanted to be like Mr Smith the thought that he can have everything that he wants was at first, inconcievable that JPD can have created a character who can be capable of all success and ambition, so unlike Balthazar B.
So I pondered, what does he want and can he have it?
What does he want? He wants Miss Tomson and gets her in a way. He wants to be able to handle himself and he gets this. He wants to feel power and will once he dies but until then, he has to make do with the sound of thirtyfive thousand cheers.
So, yes I now agree that he can have most all which he desires. Naturally one wants to feel welcome, now I feel awkward Sorry for spouting I feel;

Insanely Perfect.......2000-07-30
I wish I had written this book, but I didn't, so I'm glad he did. On the rare occasion I bring the title up I am not surprised to find that no one's ever even heard of it's author. I wish someone had so we could say to eachother "god, that's a freakin great book. Straight right man." and laugh inside our souls.
It's a perfect story, but not the kind I would read to my nieces or buy for my grandmother. I still recommend it to anyone who has ever thought that something's not quite right and they can't decide if the people they meet are really as convoluted and arrogant as they think, or if maybe it's just them.
Anyone wants to read the greatest book of their life, well this might be it, so don't think too hard and try it.

Donleavy's humor insists there is something to laugh about in this world, but then you realise that what you are laughing out-loud at is, at best, something disgusting, or rude, or utterly insane... chicken soup for the soul.

Chimney 25- a great comic.......2004-01-05
This comic is great, especially for the december time of year. The storys are a little hard to follow, but once you get the hang of them, and realize where one story ends and another begins, you're sure to enjoy the book. If you read Jhonen Vasquez or Roman Dirge you'll most likely enjoy

Earth men are wimps .......2007-03-18
In "Fighting Slave," John Norman pushes his theory that men of Earth have lost our manliness and succumbed to feminist domination. Earth women, he says, are "persons" rather than women. Earth men, are wimps who accept the domination of non-women dressed in pants. Norman uses the characters of an earth man and earth woman who are both captured and taken to Gor. The earth man becomes a "silk slave" for one of Gor's free woman but over time he learns do be dominant and manly. Eventually he turns the tables and makes a pleasure slave out of his mistress owner. As usual, earth women, are natural slaves, entirely satisfied when they have a strong man taking charge of their lives. Norman uses it to contrast with the unhappy women of earth who never know what they really want and have no strong dominant man willing to take charge of them.
The conversations about slavery weren't as tedious as some other of the Gor novels, although there isn't much for action and adventure. It was a pleasant afternoon's read with some real wisdom about the human condition which we could all learn from.
Slave Boy of Gor.......2001-06-22
The 14th Gor novel is the first in the Jason Marshall trilogy and like Captive of Gor and Slave Girl of Gor this one is pretty much for the bondage crowd. The perspective is from the viewpoint of a male slave; hence the title of the review. The story begins with 25 year old Jason in a cafe on Earth talking to Beverley Henderson, a classmate he is attracted to but has never dated. After a long and laughably unrealistic conversation about gender relationships, they go outside and are promptly kidnapped to Gor, parted, and enslaved. Jason finds himself the silk slave (i.e., boy toy) of the Lady Florence of Vonda, a city of the Salerian Confederation. After he has been defiled by Lady Melpomene, Lady Florence's archenemy, however, he is demoted to stable slave and makes a name for himself in the "stable bouts"; hence the title of the book. Despite the title it has very little fighting or action of any kind even after war breaks out between the Salerian Confederation and the city-state of Ar. Furthermore, the writing is self-indulgent to a fault. In one scene Jason is dragging a female prisoner behind him down a pitch black tunnel trying to escape from 4 trained warriors of Ar armed with swords. Jason also has a sword but no training with it and is aware that he has no chance whatsoever against them. Even though he can hear the soldiers searching for them, he nevertheless throws her to the ground and rapes her, no doubt to demonstrate his dominance and full Gorean "manhood" since they had had copious sex just prior to the escape scene. (It took Tarl Cabot 8 volumes to achieve this---it's not until he overcomes his paralytic conversion reaction in the opening chapter of Volume 9, Marauders of Gor, that he is fully Gorean---but Jason does it in less than one!) This scene is utterly unrealistic, utterly gratuitous, and utterly ridiculous. I understand that in his other career John Norman was a professor of philosophy at a New York college. I shouldn't have to tell him that in the hierarchy of human drives survival comes before sex and dominance.
The GOR Saga (25 novels by John Norman).......2001-01-29
I loved this one! It's what a Norman fan expects. Yes, I own and have read all 25 books of John Norman's GOR Saga and would love to read 25 more. John Norman is an extraordinary writer. So what if he makes slaves out of women. Hey! This is fiction, it hapens in GOR which is at the other side of the Sun and should not affect our planet. However, his books are controversial for those who would like to enslave the minds of everyone. They are anathema for those folks out there who can determine what we can, should, and want to read. Well, too bad. I always have read whatever I want and, if I don't like it, I will not read it. Isn't that the healthy way to be? Why should a well-intentioned person forbid a book to the rest of the country is something beyond my understanding. I guess those sick friends of systematic censorship believe they are God. Certainly they don't believe in the First Amendment to the Constitution. Well, they are not gods. Just very disturbed people and should be confined to special institutions. Rebel, readers! Buy John Norman books and demand that they are reprinted! Besides that, overlooking Norman's obsession with enlaving females, his books are extraordinary. How many authors have you read that depict a whole planet, including inhabitants, flora and fauna, plus language, traditions, etc. in such a way that it's believable? I know of only one: John Norman.
Fighting Slave of Gor.......2000-03-04
The whole trilogy within the 25 book epic series from 12.Beasts of Gor (1978) 13.Explorers of Gor (1979) all the way to 14.Fighting Slave of Gor (1980) were fantastic. I could not put them down. I highly recommend them all!
Fighting Slave of Gor is an excellent book!.......2000-01-20
I first found this book while in high school and was completely absorbed in the story. I was determined to read all the Gor books because of it...but have found it difficult because they are not readily available. It seems that John Norman was visualizing the typical Earth man of the last decade with the emphasis (and I believe OVER EMPHASIS) on "political correctness" and desexualizing human behavior. "Jason" is every bit the 90's type unisexually-seeming male but naturally and fortunately becomes the man he always wanted and feared to be.

Don't waste your money.......2007-02-18
If you're looking for low-cost, you can start by not buying this book. It's possibly the worst cookbook I've ever looked at.
The recipes are filled with errors. The nutrition information with each recipe is wildly inaccurate. Here's an example: The Stromboli recipe (p. 238). It says it makes 4 3-ounce servings. It starts with a "1-lb. loaf of French bread." Those of us who possess rudimentary math skills can see that that's 4 ounces of bread per 3-ounce serving. And that's before you add the ground beef, cheese and other ingredients. Furthermore, it claims each of the four servings will have 332 calories. I calculated it out and it's going to be over 500 (more like 600) calories per serving.
This is typical of the recipes in this book. Another example: Beefy Mushroom and Barley Soup (p. 167). If you made this by the directions in the book, it would be inedible. It has "lean stew beef" as one of the ingredients. The total cooking time is 30 minutes. I hope you're ready to chew for a LONG time.
Save your money and your time. Don't buy this book.
Disappointing.......2007-02-12
I found the structure of the book annoying - you constantly had to flip around to get menues and recipies and grocery lists, etc. Also, while the book description says it gives calorie amounts, it doesn't break down where the calories come from, so if you want to make substitutions or swap meals from one day to another, you don't know how that changes the calories.
old standby.......2007-02-07
I am online searching for a replacement book, because mine is so dog-eared. I've had this book for years, and I always go back to it. A lot of these recipes are definitely old standbys for my family. There is some prep time involved with chopping onions, peppers, etc. Veggies are cheap and healthy; therefore, they're in a lot of these recipes. Chop up a bunch at once and keep them in Baggies, ready for the next time.
Not That Good.......2007-01-12
I had high hopes for this book and was sadly mistaken, the food is mediocre at best, the portions are very small, i would recommend purchasing "The 1200-calorie-A-Day Menu Coobook" by Nancy Hughes if you really want good food with good portions!! i have also checked out other books by Ms. Smith and I was equally disappointed. I hope you have better luck than me.
