5 out of 5 stars Can you hear that lonesome whistle?.......2004-11-11

I found this a very good book, even though I skipped through several selections.First of all, this is not a book about the lore of Railroading. If it were, it would have been about the people who operated and serviced these wonderful trains.I knew many Railroaders and their jobs were much more than a job,it was a passion with them.My father was a Railroader and I grew up listening to all the stories about storms, accidents, breakdowns, late arrivals, special customers, hobo's, union strikes, and on and on.I can remember during WW11,the troop trains going through my town with all the windows covered.I also remember the company rounding up all available men to take "down the line" to help dig out by shovel the train stuck in a 20 foot deep cutting filled with snow.I made dozens of trips by rail in Nova Scotia;but none compared with the three return trips I made from NS to British Columbia ;particularly in the dome car. This book relates experiences these writers had in travelling by rail and while reading them;many similar memories were brought back to me.
About the time I was finishing High School,my father asked me what I would like to do.Living in a small Railway town ;two "high tech" jobs were Dispatcher (Morse Code and all) and the Watchmaker who checked and repaired the Railroader's watches. My Dad said I should give it a little more thought. One day the watches won't need repairs and one day Morse Code will be replaced.Little did he know that not only are those jobs gone;but so is the Railway, trains, tracks, stations and people now say my town "used to be a railway town."
Overall this book has a large variety of stories ,by many well known writers and thoroughly enjoyable.

    Book Description

This volume is an updated and internationalised English language version of the successful Dutch text. Land Observation by Remote Sensing: Theory and Applications focuses on earth-surface objects and describes both the theory of remote sensing and the applications of irrigation, nature conservation and environmental pollution control. Its purpose is to provide a systematically structured survey of the theory behind the applications described, and also covers the fundamentals of electromagnetic waves and sensor instrumentation formulated at university level. The textbook is divided into nine topics with special consideration given to the ''object'' approach, leaving the ''sensor'' approach in the background, though the historical gap that exists between these concepts in the respective fields of the optical and microwave wavelength regions is bridged.

4 out of 5 stars Great story, good artwork........2005-08-14

A serial murderer is on the loose (maybe), a killer clown (or is it clowns), who has killed and plans to kill again. In fact, he even leaves clues and if the police are smart enough they might just stop him (or them).
Officer Kurumi Ayaki was going to leave the force to get married, but she REALLY needs moeny and ends up trying to get back into her old position. But she is given another posting - in the Unsolved Crimes Division, also known as The Crypt, where her new boss is a young genius who refuses to step one foot outside his office. Now she has a cell phone, a gun and a series of horrific crimes.
The bodies are piling up and she is in way over her head. How long can she last as a remote?
    Great, twisted story. So-so artwork.

5 out of 5 stars Great start to a police thriller series.......2004-12-27

The discovery of a murdered woman and someone dressed up as a clown near the site of the murder, kicks off the police thriller manga series Remote by Seimaru Amagi. A floppy disc is discovered by the corpse, and the police decide to hand the case over to brooding and calm but taciturn Inspector Kozaburo Himuro, head of the Unsolved Crimes Division, Unit A. He is stationed in "the Crypt," his personal house far away from the Criminal Investigation Division's headquarters.

Joining him as his put-upon and sometimes reluctant partner is Kurumi Ayaki, a stunning 23 year old in the traffic division who was planning to retire so she could get married to her wimpy car salesman fiancé, Shingo. Unfortunately, the recession puts paid Shingo's expected promotion, where his salary might get halved. Kurumi, who has already handed in her resignation, is forced to retract it, and hence assigned to Himuro. As he is unable to leave due to an accident the previous year, Kurumi is forced to become his eyes and ears, with a cellphone with which the two can communicate. Despite his apparent coldness and the way he pushes Kurumi, I tend to like him better for his use of logic and intelligence. Kurumi is thus on 24 hour call. As Himuro tells her at one point, "you belong to a unit now. The only time you're off duty is when you're dead. If you can't deal with that, then maybe I should find someone who can."

However, while discussing matters at the Central Towers Hotel, Kurumi unexpected sees a man dressed in a clown suit singing a nursery rhyme, and moments later, takes charge in the lobby where a man is found dead with a floppy disc in his pocket. Her ability for recall gives Himuro more to go on with, which makes him believe that maybe she is of good use after all.

The clown has been leaving messages that serves as a password with which to open the floppy disc's files. The clue in the first murder is the message "SEND MORE MONEY." While Kurumi sees it as it is, Himuro recognizes it as a mathematical equation, SEND+MORE=MONEY, with each letter being a number. The files then reveal the location of each planned murder.

The best scene involves Himuro sending Kurumi to a dark abandoned warehouse at night, where he expects her to find "one psychotic bozo." In other words, a clown, and Kurumi is forced to defend herself. However, two more killings occur, at which point it becomes clear that there have been different killers.

Kurumi isn't exactly that well gifted in the brain department, and is a bit of a ditz, making up for it in her figure. However, she is a complement to the more logical and intelligent Himuro. At one point, while running to prevent another murder, she stops to help an injured boy, which enrages Himuro because she will be too late. And she is liked by two of Himuro's assistants, the hulking behemoth Bob Kato, nicknamed the Bobhemoth, and whose lunch consists of a tray full of hamburgers, and the older woman Hanae, who thinks Kurumi will be the person to bring Himuro out of his shell. Apparently, the accident he was involved in left him with the inability to feel anything emotionally.

As for Tetsuya Koshiba, the artist, his hands do justice to the main characters. Kurumi is drawn as a typical manga/anime bimbo, wide eyes, great figure, nice legs, and some shots of her can be gratuitous, such as the scene where she has fallen on the floor, and her undies can be seen beneath her mini. Kurumi's close and faraway nude scenes in one section does justify the OT (16+) rating. Even though she complains and is a bit irritating at times, at least she's nice to look at.

The ending does not end the case, which is continued in Episode 2. Great start-off to a promising series.

    4 out of 5 stars Solid mystery/thriller.......2004-07-12

First of all, i'm not sure how this book came to be labeled "ultra violent" in the Publishers Information section at Amazon - there is violence - this is a murder mystery thriller after all, but it's very much rated R stuff.
Our heroine Kurumi Ayaki is a meter maid who retired to marry. Finding out that her fiance didn't get the raise he was promised, she is forced to beg her boss to give her back her old job. Instead, he reassigns her to the unsolved crimes homicide division. She is made partners with a genius investigator who cannot leave his house, for reasons hinted at but not explained in this volume. She must act as his eyes, ears and hands, getting directions from him on her cell phone, which she must keep on her day or night.
One thing that impressed me right away about this manga - the killer leaves a riddle at the crime scene in the form of a phrase. The detective solves this riddle, and I was impressed by the way he solves it - this is a legitimate math puzzle of moderate complexity - if I had to solve it on my own it would probably take at least several hours. No shortcut is taken - he solves it right in front of you in the manga, which takes several pages and some concentration on the readers part to follow the logic. I just can't imagine something like this being put in a movie for instance, or an american comic - the assumption would be that the reader is too "dumb" for something like this, and would be bored by the math.
I didn't like the art much - it is serviceable, and the author is pretty good at building tension and suspense where needed, but in other scenes it seems a bit sketchy and a little ugly.
Overall, a good mystery/thriller title for an older audience (although not necessary adult - I think teenagers would enjoy this as well).

This third book in the GISDATA series focuses on the widespread use of geographical information systems GIS in European local government. The editors include a wide range of applications carried out by different professional groups, and offer the opportunity of studying the extent to which diffusion of innovations like GIS are sensitive to national issues such as cultural context, institutional setup and the availability of data.; The book answers key questions such as: what can be learnt from research on organizational behaviour in relation to technological innovation?; what are the classical features of the GIS diffusion process?; to what extent is the adoption and utilization of GIS facilitated - or impeded - by the organizational culture within which it takes place?; and what mechanisms can be applied to enhance the diffusion of GIS? The book covers aspects of diffusion in the following European countries: UK, France, Italy, Poland, Denmark, The Netherlands, Germany, Greece and Portugal.

      Book Description

In this hardcover edition, the author develops the background and fundamental theory of inversion processes used in remote sensing (e.g. atmospheric temperature structure measurements from satellites), starting at an elementary level. The book opens with a number of examples of inversion problems from a wide variety of disciplines and it is shown that mathematically the same problem--solution of a Fredholm linear integral equation of the first kind--is involved in every instance. The reduction of such integral equations to a system of linear algebraic equations is then discussed. Methods for obtaining stable solutions at the expense of introducing constraints in the solutions are discussed and illustrated and the last three chapters elaborate and extend the material developed in preceding chapters. Other inversion procedures are derived, with examples, and a method for detailed analysis of the information content of indirect measurements is provided. Unabridged, corrected Dover republication of the work published as Volume 3 of Developments in Geomathematics by Elsevier Scientific Publishing Company, Amsterdam, 1977. Preface. Suggestions for Further Reading. Name Index. Subject Index. 42 text figures.

5 out of 5 stars Cherryh short stories.......2006-11-26

Cherryh is a well-known name on the sci-fi shelves, so I was intrigued when I read a short story in a collection of Great Short Stories. I am very glad I looked further for the rest. Short stories are to literature what creme brulee is to dessert- only the finest can pull it off- as did the author of these very disparate stories with great range and storytelling skill.

                  5 out of 5 stars A collected treat!.......2005-02-05

If you love the work of Ms Cherryh, this is a book for you. If, like I did, you already had the three books of short fiction contained in this volume it is still a book for you. First of all it is bound up in one beautiful hardback volume, so it looks a lot nicer in your library(not to mention the three have become valuable as collector items, so you can protect them and put them away). But it also has the advantage of some additional insights of the author as well as a story made especially for this edition. Lastly, if you don't have these stories in some other form you are missing a real treat. Ms. Cherryh's multi level writing style is always rewarding, and if you like I do have made an effort to own everything she has written will give you essential, parts of stories that you may have missed, (for example, Faery In Shadow, would be a head scratcher with out reading the first half of the story only available in the short story collections. Hint, Hint Publisher... Why don't you publish that Story in one volume for collectors? This is a great Airport Book, as it short stories and has natural breaks, but also the author, has set the book up as a story teller speaking to a traveler. Excellent!

                  C. J. Cherryh is mostly known for her fantasy novels; the Collected Short Fiction Of C.J. Cherryh features the first comprehensive collection of her short fiction, and provides a range of satisfyingly complex stories marked with the Cherryh fondness for alien/human relationships. From Cassandra, about a woman cursed with prophecy and madness, to a story set in the far future where a dying sun dictates a world's moves, Collected Short Fiction Of C.J. Cherryh is filled with strong plots and varied settings. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great sf anthology.......2004-02-04

This is an interesting collection that is divided into three categories: Sunfall, Visible Light, and other stories. Fans of the author will appreciate that her talent with short stories matches that of her novels. Newcomers will gain a wonderful taste of one of the best speculative fiction authors of the past two plus decades.

The Sunfall tales were mostly published in the early 1980s collection with one new one never seen before this addition. These nine fabulous stories focus on life in the cities as the sun begins to cool.

The eight wonderful tales that make up the Visible Light anthology were released in the mid 1980s. These delightful stories focus on individuals who in many cases could be you or me overwhelmed by external conflict often outside their control.

The other section is more of a potpourri that contains fifteen interesting contributions, but though each one is well written, they also feel like fill-in material at least in this anthology. Even the strongest tale of the book, Pots in which archeological truths fail to stand up to political realities, seems out of place.

To overcome that feeling of displacement, this reviewer read the collected short fiction as if there were three short story books. Each one provides plenty of enjoyment to readers.

Garde manger refers to the restaurant kitchen area where cold dishes, including soups, salads, sandwiches, sauces, cheeses, sausages, and pâtés, as well as hors d'oeuvres and the condiments used to garnish them, are prepared. The book Garde Manger is a teaching text for food professionals, updated from a 1973 edition by a team of chefs from the Culinary Institute of America. Home cooks, as well as students and professional cooks, will enjoy the chapters on preparing dressings, cold soups, salads, and sandwiches in this clearly, concisely written book, which is illustrated with hundreds of color photos. More serious home cooks will also appreciate the chapters that delve into making sausages, smoked foods, terrines, and other charcuterie. Here you'll learn to prepare and smoke old-fashioned, lusty French Garlic Sausage or a Pheasant Galantine enriched with pork fat and Madeira.

Intermediate cooks comfortable with terms such as chiffonade (leafy vegetables cut into very thin strips) will appreciate composed salads like simple Italian Shaved Fennel with Parmesan and heat-spiked Buffalo Chicken Salad, in addition to such soups as Cold Carrot Bisque sparked with ginger, tangy orange juice, and yogurt.

Noncooks interested in food will find Garde Manger fascinating too. How better to appreciate the Roasted Vegetable Terrine, layered with eggplant, squash, mushrooms, and goat cheese and served at your favorite restaurant, than by understanding how it is made? Home cooks who entertain will appreciate Garde Manger's recipes, as they produce quarts of sauce, gallons of soup, and canapés by the dozen. For the rest, when you can't modify the recipe, there is always the freezer. --Dana Jacobi

                    .

This is another great TEXT from the CIA. As with all good textbooks, the focus is on the how and why rather than on the what. The recipes are to illustrate lesson points rather than be the focus of the book.

If you want to improve you cold kitchen skills, buy this book.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent base book.......2007-01-18

This publication provides a broad range of basic and advanced techniques for the cold kitchen. We used this book in the culinary arts program at the college I attend and I have made many of the recipe's successfully. I withheld one star because I found that universally the recipe's lack proper seasoning. It's a great book for anyone needing real working recipe's and techniques for salads, dressings, hors d hovres, canapes, taurine, sausage making, smoking, and other detail cold kitchen work.

While I attended The Illinois Institute of Culinary Arts, this book was required for our Garde Manger class.
During the time I attended school, I was unable to purchase the book, and had to reserve it from my local library.
I was most delighted when I found it on Amazon.com, and I highly recommend it for schools, personal use etc.
The book was in excellent condition and arrived much faster than I had anticipated.

                    Sincerely,
                    Vatania

I recently completed my 4th Quarter as a Culinary Student at the Art Institute. Using the book "Garde Manger, The Art and Craft of the Cold Kitchen" was great text used in our course of Garde Manger. The recipes easy to understand and the outcome of each dish had great results. This book is a great addition to my library as i will refer back to it frequently.
