5 out of 5 stars Good poetry and illustrations.......2000-05-08

This book has a lot of good poetry, suitable for young people to read. Some poems are by famous poets. All of the poems are lyrical, rich in imagery and wonderful for reading out loud. The poetry are complimented by beautiful oil paintings, some of which are by great artists like Renoir and Monet. An excellent poetry book for youngsters!

Book Description

When W.O. Mitchell died in 1998 he was described as “Canada's best-loved writer.” Every commentator agreed that his best – and his best-loved – book was Who Has Seen the Wind. Since it was first published in 1947, this book has sold almost a million copies in Canada.

As we enter the world of four-year-old Brian O’Connal, his father the druggist, his Uncle Sean, his mother, and his formidable Scotch grandmother (“she belshes…a lot”), it soon becomes clear that this is no ordinary book. As we watch Brian grow up, the prairie and its surprising inhabitants like the Ben and Saint Sammy – and the rich variety of small-town characters – become unforgettable. This book will be a delightful surprise for all those who are aware of it, but have never quite got around to reading it, till now.

4 out of 5 stars "Maybe God was in the bathroom and couldn't come to the door.".......2006-06-02

Brian Sean MacMurray O'Connal comes to his own conclusons when, at age four, he goes to the local church alone and no one answers his knock. After meeting the minister later, however, he thinks he hears the voice of God--"My name is R. W. God, BVD." Brian's search for answers to life's biggest questions takes him through ages four, six, eight, and ten in this 1947 novel set during the Depression on the plains of Saskatchewan. Focusing on the O'Connal family, and especially Brian--their friends, acquaintances, life crises, and search for harmony in nature--the novel glorifies small town life and the local residents' closeness to the soil.

Here Brian expresses the normal curiosity of young children his age as he tries to understand the life cycle of nature--why the baby pigeon died after he plucked it from its nest, how two-headed calves can develop, why his puppy died and what to do afterward, and how to deal with the sudden death of his father and the more predictable death of his grandmother. Each of these major events in his life brings him closer to understanding the ebb and flow of life, further emphasized by the author's choice of repeating imagery and symbols from nature--goshawks, meadowlarks, grass and flowers, an owl, the movement of poplar trees, and, of course, the wind. Biblical imagery permeates the novel, and the poetic language and style--filled with alliteration, internal rhymes, and onomatopoeia--create a lyrical celebration of life on the prairie.

Contrasting characters further illustrate the themes. The two Bens--Old and Young--and St. Sammy, a not-so-crazy man who lives in a piano box and has his own theology, prefer their free, unfettered life on the prairie. These contrast with characters like Miss MacDonald, Brian's cruelly insensitive first grade teacher who is dedicated to crushing the free spirits of her young charges. Other characters see their lives as falling somewhere between unrestricted freedom and social responsibility.

A book full of sweetness and nostalgia for childhood and its discoveries, Who Has Seen the Wind is beautifully constructed, resonant with life's themes conveyed in heady poetic language. It is so saccharine in its depiction of the sweetness of childhood and so removed from present day life, however, that it is difficult to imagine this book appealing to today's young pre-teens and teens. Their issues regarding life and death and their big questions about the value of life are far more complicated than life as seen in this period piece. n Mary Whipple

5 out of 5 stars It's not a fast read.......2006-03-08

There are books you can blast through, action packed where the story is all on the surface. Tom Clancy, for example. I love a read like that.

On the other hand, if you are looking for a book that will reward you on a quick read, this isn't it. Nor for that matter, are any other of W.O. Mitchell's works (with the possible exception of Jake and the Kid). This is a book that is better on the second reading than the first, and on the tenth than the eighth. Slow down and wallow in it. Soak up the images and let the alliteration create the sounds for you, and when you do, you will be transported into the world about which Mitchell writes. I grew up a couple of dozen miles from the town which he identifies as Crocus, and know real people with the surnames he uses in this book. When I slow down and spend time with Mitchell, it resonates - and evokes with remarkable accuracy the world I grew up in thirty years later. There is no excitement here, but if you have patience, the insight you gain can generate its own profound excitement.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful story about life.......2005-11-17

I was required to read this book as a rambunctious 15 year old. I hated the fact I was forced to read it, but loved the story as I had grown up on the prairies. Mitchell captures life on the prairie and the mind of an inquisitive boy like no other.

1 out of 5 stars boring boring boring.......2004-10-20

This is one of the most boring books i have ever read. There is no story. Nothing happens. Each sentence in this book is a long, drawn out, boring attempt to be profoundly creative. Do yourself a favour and just poke youself in the eye with a stick instead of reading this....

4 out of 5 stars the classic.......2003-09-23

I've read this about three times now, maybe more. What keeps taking me back is something like rain to the earth. These are indeed stories that are 'close to the earth' -- the human spirit, in all its simplicity, yet all its complexity. I read to a group of senior citizens and they often ask for more of this book. The stories read great aloud and I recommend it for anyone who enjoys an author who writes about the everyday, with a very deep insight into the human condition. Don't pass this one up.

I do not know who's sick, SICK idea it was to force grade elvens to read this but I personally would pay-- I would pay not to have this book put into print and for the board of education to find an actual book like Catcher in the Rye or the stranger DO NOT come close to this book, if you can help it. Book Description

This is a novel of small-town life. The town where roses are difficult is Shelby, in the Alberta foothills, and the time is the 1950s. Matt Stanley, the editor of the local paper, relishes the range of people he meets, from Willie MacCrimmon, the local shoemaker and demon curler, to the oldest resident, Daddy Sherry, all the way to the disreputable Rory Napoleon and his wife, Mame, who once conceived at the top of a ferris wheel “because there was nothing else to do.” But when a sociologist arrives to study the town, Matt takes her under his wing, which produces unexpected results. From scenes of high comedy (as when Santa comes to Shelby, or when Rory Napoleon’s goats invade the town) to gentle sadness, this 1990 novel shows W.O Mitchell at his traditional best.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Should have been a short story.......2001-07-09

This book is set in 1950s Alberta in a small town called Shelby. A sociologist arrives to research rural life and turns the little town upside down, starting with the weekly newspaper and its owner. It is basically a comedy so things end up better than when they started; but there isn't a lot of meat on this bone. Too much local color dialect is thrown in for show, and that takes away from the story. If I had been his editor I would have encouraged him to trim this 300 page book way, way, way down to a longish short story. It is full of quirky characters and is a fun read. The best of the characters (and the reason why this book gets 3 stars from me) is the town's garbage collector, Rory Napoleon. He falls off the wagon in a big way and it is incredibly funny. I took this book with me on vacation and I would recommend it to others who are going away and want a light read.

In A Secret History, the first of a four-volume series, Mary Gentle began the story of Ash, a mercenary captain, and her band of 800 veterans embroiled in a war in 15th-century Europe. As the war assumes epic proportions, Ash--who hears a tactically astute voice in her head--becomes a sought-after commodity. Gentle, a writer who delights in confounding reader expectations, used as a literary device the insertion of e-mail from a present-day scholar and his editor to set up a series of intriguing questions about the main narrative: Are the Carthaginians' stone golems fantastical, or explicable in terms of alternate history? Is the shocking dimming of the sun evidence of magic, or of technology impossible in that milieu? Is Ash touched by God, or the end result of a careful breeding program? In the second volume, the author grins impishly and replies, "Yes."

Gentle keeps the reader enthralled on two levels. In the main narrative, Ash's enforced sojourn in Carthage is described authoritatively and viscerally. We believe in Ash, in her shock and pain and denial when she finds herself a slave in enemy territory. We understand her occasional despair, cheer her final refusal to give up, and absolutely delight in her hard-won escape and her satisfaction at once again donning armor and taking up her sword. However, it is the secondary narrative that adds depth. Gentle gives us explanations with one hand and takes them away with the other, while simultaneously posing ever more fascinating questions. The intertwined narratives reflect and complement one another, adding layer upon layer--and the sheen of brilliance--to the series. --Luc Duplessis

              Book Description

In a brutal age of bloodshed and miracles where dark sorcery has extinguished the sun, the fate of Western Europe, Africa--and perhaps all the world--rests in the hands of a warrior woman named Ash.

The undefeated legions that are the army of Carthage rampage across the kingdoms of Europe. Beneath a sunless sky, Burgundy alone stands in the path of the Visigoth horde and their legendary slave general, the Faris. Deep in enemy territory lies a living stone idol of frightening power that must be destroyed if anyone is to survive, a being that whispers in Ash's soul, that has guided her through every military campaign, that only she and her enemy--her twin--can hear.

But there is an even greater evil that lurks at Carthage, one that created the stone idol and shaped Ash's existence. It plots with deadly purpose the final annihilation that will wipe Burgundy from the face of the earth. For Burgundy lies at the heart of it all--the richest prize in Europe and the key to the world--the jewel of the Carthaginian campaign.

3 out of 5 stars A detailed look at 15th century life, but slow at times.......2003-03-12

I like the series because it seems to be an accurate, gritty view of life in 15th century Europe. The author brings out little details that usually aren't found in period novels, like her men always cussing and "scratching under their codpeices". Now there's something I wouldn't have thought about...

And when Ash is commanding her men in battle, shouting orders, getting her men in position, I can almost smell the smoke from Angelotti's guns and hear the screams of the horses. These are the best parts of the book. The author definately knows how to present a battle scene from the perspective of a company captain.

Unfortunately, there is too little action in the first two books, and especially this book. Ash's long periods of self-examination really grow boring and add nothing to the story, except a feeling of "hey, no kidding Ash; you just figured that out?". This book is about 200 pages too long. And slow. And Ashes attraction to del Guiz makes her seems EXTREMELY shallow.

But despite all that, I'm still drawn to the story because, first, I keep waiting for a battle and second, I love the feeling of being dropped into the period. The author's research into battle tactics and the period itself really make the story come alive.

I would recommend the book to people who like historical novels or who might enjoy the medieval mercenary setting. The series is worth a look.

5 out of 5 stars Swords, and now some sorcery.......2002-10-09

Carthage Ascendent is the second Book of Ash, although this isn't a series but a tremendous novel published in four parts. It's the only one that takes place away from Ash's stomping grounds of western Europe, where the other three books are set. Here, our heroine, the leader of a mercenary company, is captured and taken prisoner, then returned to her birthplace of Carthage. She didn't know this was her birthplace, and this is not the Carthage you think it is. Oh, and she's got this twin who is the general of the Visigoth army. And if you think that isn't weird enough, there's no sun in Carthage. And now it's getting very cold.

Yes, things are defintely getting beyond a straight historical fiction, but it doesn't read like just fantasy either. The story of Ash is supposedly a manuscript translation, but the editor wants to yank the project because the manuscripts are disappearing from their supposed libraries. Meanwhile the translator has joined an archaelogical expedition and is finding evidence supporting the events in Ash's life.

This second book has a very different sense than the first one, since we meet her as a competent leader, and now she's reduced to a defeated slave. But with two more books to go, there are plenty more plot developments, and they are very surprising. The "voice" in Ash's head is not what she thought it was in Book 1, and dealing with it takes up a good deal of her worries (that is, when she isn't plotting her escape). Her husband shows up in Carthage, too, and she gets to watch the politics of the amirs here after handling European nobility in book 1. Have I mentioned that there is a lot going on here?

Keep at it and enjoy. Check out the reviews of Book 1: A Secret History if you haven't already.

2 out of 5 stars Mary Gentle's The Book of Ash - Part II.......2002-02-28

This is the conclusion of my review of the whole work. Part I is found under volume 1, A Secret History.

              NO LAUGHING MATTER
We would assume there would be some comic relief in so long and depressing a novel, yet we search for it in vain. Ash's sordid world is generally unrelieved by any humor. But every so often we are told that some characters chuckled, guffawed, or burst into laughter. It is fortunate that we are told this, because we can then re-read the text to try to find out why. The wit and humor in this book are so feeble and simple-minded that one is forced to conclude that the characters are the type of people who would convulse in laughter if somebody merely broke wind. While reading this interminable work we are usually in the company of simpletons (i.e., the men of the Lion Azure passant guardant affronte look-I-swear-I'm-a-lion-and-not-a-leopard, really.)

TWO HEARTS THAT BEAT AS ONE
Ash's love for Fernando del Guiz is even weirder that the alternate universe flapdoodle. She says she hates him (as well she should), he is a coward, a wimp, a swine....but Ash just loves him to pieces, because he's handsome. This must be a "woman thing." A man cannot understand it. It tends to destroy the whole feminist agenda of the book. It turns Ash into a giddy teen-age girl (instead of the homicidal, sociopathic teen-age girl we know and love.) But wait, wait--maybe this whole episode is the comic relief I thought wasn't there???

              PATTON--WHAT A GOOD MOVIE!
"I don't want you guys to die for your flag--I want the Visigoths to die for theirs." [II,80] I was disappointed that Ash didn't add something like, "And when your kids ask you what you did in the great Visigoth war, you won't have to say you shoveled muck in Antwerp." But at any rate, I then understood the earlier slapping incident. Could Ash be George Patton? (Considering that Old Blood and Guts believed in reincarnation, we may have a hook for a whole new series here.)

              DEUS EX MACHINA
An earthquake is a pretty feeble plot device to get characters out of a tight place.

              EXPLETIVE NOT DELETED, NOT EVER
Question: How many times is a certain four-letter profanity used in the book?
              Answer: 590
Question: How many times is it Ash who uses it?
              Answer: 373
              Question: Does this bother you?
              Answer: Yes
Question: Did you actually count the times?
              Answer: Yes
Question: Where is the editor when you need him?
              No Answer

The churls of Ash's world do not impress us by their mindless and repetitive profanity. Ash herself should have her mouth washed out with soap. (Too bad Leofric didn't think of that.)

              TO BATTLE! (WHAT'S HAPPENING?)
The fog of war never billows more thickly than when a battle occurs. From the first skirmish, which is so vaguely narrated as to seem surreal, to the Battle of Auxonne--a pitched battle if ever there was one, just begging for a map, an OB (order of battle, troop list), and clear prose, but which is instead described only from Ash's confused and incomplete viewpoint--we are usually unsure as to what is happening. We do not even get a map of Dijon, where we are stuck for two volumes.

              FINALLY
Anyone who has had the patience to read this whole review might well now ask why I read all four volumes when I found in them so much to dislike. I could take the easy way out and say it was because I had bought them and wanted a return for my money, but that is not the case. No, I finished them, and gave them 2 stars instead of 1, for several reasons. The main one is that, in spite of everything, I liked Ash--or at least I felt sorry for her. She never gives up, and is strong and brave. I kept hoping she would grow and show some recovery from her horrible past. I hoped she would give up on Fernando and turn to Floria. I wanted to see how it ended (as disappointing as that was to me.) I also have to admire an author who can write so long a story and get through the enormous task of seeing it into print. Ms. Gentle also never quits, and is strong and brave. But when all is said and done, I do feel that the limitations of this work far outweigh its virtues. Caveat lector (Let the reader beware.)

This is the second part of THE BOOK OF ASH (following A SECRET HISTORY), the story of a female mercenary captain in an alternate 15th century Europe. This main alternate history story is framed by the story of a historian in the early 21st century translating a manuscript of this history. He is trying to uncover why we have never heard any of this history as it is being told in the manuscript. This all makes for a very engaging read because, not only does it draw the reader into the mystery, but we also get an extremely well told and realistic tale of a mercenary band in war torn medieval Europe. As in the first book, the reader is again deeply immersed in this reality through the author's use of vivid description, brilliantly imagined characters, and engaging plot devices.

I was tempted to give this book only three stars. The first fifty pages of the book, as well as the last hundred, were exciting and very engaging reading. Unfortunately, the middle two hundred or so pages did not do much to advance the story. The problem was that not much really happened. Sure, we learn some important backstory and a lot of the relevant politics, but it was severely bogged down with superfluous scenes and interior monologues that could easily have been cut without losing anything from the story.

The main reason I didn't give it three stars was the fact that there were so many mysteries that were hinted at in the first book that were unearthed in this one that it made for some very interesting reading. We learn about Ash's past, what her voice really is, as well as more of the history of the world in which she lives. In addition, the final hundred pages were so full of action and military operations, that it was impossible to put the book down. This is the type of action that I had been expecting in a book about a mercenary captain that seemed so sorely lacking in the first book. The author also hits us with another revelation and an even bigger mystery in the last portion of the book. I couldn't wait to get to the next one in the series and see if we didn't find out what was truly going on.

Despite the shortcomings of the storytelling in the middle of the book, I still felt that this was a better than average fantasy story and, thus, felt compelled to give it a four star rating. If you enjoyed the first book in the series (and you'd better read it before trying this one), this one should also grab your attention. This is a must read series for any fantasy fan, especially for those who enjoy stories with a military bent.

              5 out of 5 stars Part 2 of a brilliant fantasy novel.......2001-07-22

This is part 2 of "Ash: A Secret History" - an excellent fantasy novel by UK author Mary Gentle. The novel describes the life of Ash, a Joan of Arc-like mercenary leader. Ash is a young teenager, living in mercenary army camps at the end of the 15th century. She starts hearing voices in her head, giving her tactical advice on battlefield situations. When she becomes a successful battlefield commander, she forms her own mercenary army and gets involved in the protection of Burgundy against an invasion.

This novel gives a very gritty, realistic view of life in the 15th century. Right from the start the reader is confronted with the mud, blood, sweat and pain of the life of a soldier. Gentle is not afraid to hurt or kill her characters. Even though the story is brutal and often horrifying, it is always a compelling read.

"Ash: A Secret History" is presented as the translation of a manuscript, complete with footnotes explaining some of the archaic terms. The correspondence between Pierce Ratcliff, the fictional scholar who is translating the work, and his editor Anna Longman, is inserted between the chapters of Ash's life. This correspondence adds an entirely new dimension to the story, explaining some of the anachronistic expressions and some of the differences between Ash's version of history and our own. Another reviewer called this novel a combination of fantasy and scholarly mistery.

Mary Gentle, an accomplished scholar herself, acquired an MA in War Studies as part of the writing process of this novel.

"Ash: A Secret History" was advertised in the UK as "the largest single-volume fantasy novel ever", which is quite possibly true at 1100 pages. In the US, however, the novel was split into 4 separate volumes: "A Secret History", "Carthage Ascendant", "The Wild Machines" and "Lost Burgundy".

After my diagnosis, I read countless books and cookbooks looking for things I could eat. Until I found this book, I was frustrated by the expensive, difficult to find ingredients in gluten-free recipes. This is a great cookbook -- simple recipes with common ingredients. A must for anyone with celiac disease.

I thought this book would give quick easy Gluten free meals....I gave me quick meals that were typical junk foods (Kids foods) that were Gluten free versions....thats not what I cook for my children. More pictures would have been nice too....Gluten free foods often look different than regluar foods....I guess thats why pictures were excluded!!!!!!!!!

                            3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-05-21

I was a little disappointed with this cookbook. I think most of the recipes are pretty generic as they call for all of the 'normal' ingredients of the recipes, but just add "gluten-free" to the title of the ingredient. It wouldn't take a genius to take already used recipes and convert them to GF just by substituting the ing. I don't know exactly what I was expecting but this wasn't it....
