Book Description

Impressionistic and bold, the nine stories in this collection frame the middle period of Chekhov's career. Exploring both complicated and intense emotions, Chekhov presents a world without simple answers or universal truths. "Ward No. 6" is a savage indictment of the medical profession. "The Black Monk," the story of a scholar who has strange hallucinations, explores ideas of genius and insanity. "A Woman's Kingdom" and "Three Years" show women discovering that money, marriage, and choices do not necessarily bring happiness. In "Murder" religious fervor leads to violence, while in "The Student" a young man recounts a tale from the gospels and undergoes a sudden spiritual epiphany. Also in this volume are "The Grasshopper," "Adriana," and "The Two Volodyas."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest of all storytellers.......2005-10-31

Chekhov is one of the greatest of all storytellers. His love of his characters and his love of life pervade his writing. In two of the stories here a major theme is illness. This is a subject Chekhov not only as a physician but as someone long ill with tuberculosis understood extremely well.
In the title story of the collection, one of the main characters Gromov has a persecution mania and is incarcerated in a horrific asylum, where Doctor Ragin becomes interested in his case." Their relationship attracts attention and the doctor is tricked into becoming a patient in his own ward. He dies after being beaten by a charge hand."(Spark Notes)
Human devastation and disaster, unremitting tragedy is a strong part of Chekhov's universe also.
In his writing he presents an immense variety of character and situation, and a primarily sympathetic approach to most people. And this when there are strong elements of cruelty in the stories.
For the reader the Chekhov story as I understand it has a kind of magical strength. It gives a sense of being firmly rooted in Reality while that Reality itself can often have the most surprising and lyrical nature.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully crafted.......2004-03-09

With great skill Chekhov describes grotesque and pathetic characters, and uses them to formulate subtle yet powerful satires of the less noble aspects of human nature such as egocentrism and sophistry. Good translation with a decent (but short and therefore superficial) introduction.

    Book Description

Anton Chekhov invented the modern short story. With writing that is concise, realistic, and evocative, he became a sort of photographer in words, less interested in plot than in the subtleties of mood and atmosphere, and the telling detail. His characters, always vividly drawn, come from all walks of life and often seem to be caught up in a world they don’t quite understand.

Early in his brief literary career, Chekhov outlined in a letter to his brother his idea of the ingredients of a good short story. Arguing against moral judgments and political, economic, or social commentary, he wrote, “To describe . . . you need . . . to free yourself from the personal expression. . . . Subjectivity is a terrible thing.” Instead, he favored objectivity, truthfulness, originality, compassion, and brevity. Although his writing developed and matured, he remained largely faithful to these principles.

This new selection of twenty-three stories explores the entire range of Chekhov’s short fiction, from early sketches, such as “The Cook’s Wedding” (1885) and “On the Road” (1886) to late works, such as “In the Ravine” (1900) and “The Bishop" (1902). Ward No. 6 and Other Stories includes some of his most popular tales, such as the title story and “The Lady with the Dog” (1899), as well as several lesser-known works, no less masterful in their composition.

4 out of 5 stars Before the Mask .......2007-01-11

An Excellent series to begin for Dragon Lance. This is Book 1. I enjoyed it alot. There is action, corrruption and so much going on. I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I have.

2 out of 5 stars Just Not Interesting.......2006-07-06

This is the story of Verminaard, unloved [...] son of Solamnic Knights, and his road to evil. Though far from being a bad book, it just didn't draw me in. Verminaard's evilness seems to be inborne rather than reactionary, to the point that the supposed contributing factors - the unloving father, the loss of the beloved brother - seem more like asides and much less sympathetic. Likewise with his half-brother Aglaca, who is unfailingly upbeat and loyal for no apparent reason. I understand the story the Williamses were trying to tell, and it took a while to put my finger on what was wrong. Then I realized it was missing a vital element of all great drama: levity. The human experience is not serious all the time. Even in the grimmest tales there is laughter. The unrelenting depression of this book left me frankly unmoved.

            2 out of 5 stars What a disappointment!.......2001-10-22

I'm not the kind of person who watches a movie or reads a book based on the actors in it or who wrote it. A good actor can make a horrible movie just as easily as a bad actor can & vice verca.

Same goes for writers - although I haven't read a bad Weis & Hickman book yet. However, Micheal Williams has butchered every DL book he has ever written. He absolutely bores me to death.

I couldn't wait to read this book because I loved Emperor Of Ansalon & Black Wing. I thought this was going to be another good villian based book. Even though I hadn't liked any of the other Williams books, I thought this was a can't miss. Unfortunately, I was bored by page 130.

I have to add this one to Weasel's Luck,Galen Beknighted,The Companions,Darkness & Light and Kendermore as DL books to skip.

4 out of 5 stars It is a wonderful book, but sad........2000-09-26

I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone. It was sad for me though because it didn't turn out the way I wanted it too but it turned out the way it had to. If you can get this book, get it ASAP!

3 out of 5 stars Not the greatest, but not bad........1999-09-22

This book really didn't get going. It seemed things were just thrown on top of each other. It is an acceptable boog for the begning of Vermnard's life, but it could have been alot better. Plus, It is kind of hard to get into a character if you know he is going to fail and die.

5 out of 5 stars An Actor's Journey of Self-Discovery.......2002-05-13

It's the early 1950s at the dawn of the modern civil rights era. "Amos 'n' Andy" and "Beulah" are on television. Except for a few film roles (including those performed by a young actor named Sidney Poitier), opportunities for black actors are rather limited. James Wheaton, another young actor (who would later work with Poitier) is working long hours at the post office between intermittent radio assignments to support his wife and infant son. One day he gets a call to audition for a new repertory theatre company that plans to present quality plays to churches around the country. As a PK (or preacher's kid), he finds the concept intrigiung. The Bishop's Company as it is called, selects James Wheaton to join the company. He will be it's only black member. However, except for one play, he will be cast in roles not specifically written for blacks.

MASKS BEFORE THE ALTAR explores James Wheaton's first months with the Bishop's Company. In this fascinating memoir, Wheaton examines his many feelings regarding his participation with the group. In addition to relaying the struggles of a new theatre company, the book also gives one a glimpse of the state of race relations at the time.

Keep in mind that the book takes place right before sweeping changes in the United States that would end legal segregation. Although he was an army veteran and the graduate of a major institution in the North (Columbia University), Wheaton was not prepared for the daily interaction with whites that he faced with the Bishop's Company. As a result, he was forced to confront issues regarding race in a way that he had never experienced before. It must have been quite trying at times for the PK from Mississippi.

The book also explores key aspects of his life before joining the Bishop's Company. This includes an example of how black southerners used theatre in the church. It also gives one a sense of what it was like to be brought up in the black church in the first half of the twentieth century.

After participating in the Bishop's Company, James Wheaton would work frequently with the Ebony Showcase Theatre in Los Angeles as both actor and director. The theatre was founded by the late actor Nick Stewart specifically to provide opportunities for black actors. Ironically, Stewart is perhaps best known for his role as Lightnin' on the TV series, "Amos 'n' Andy." Later, James Wheaton would add television and film credits to his resume, working with people like Bill Cosby, Lloyd Bridges, Redd Foxx and George Lucas. Perhaps that'll be the subject of another book.

Whether you're familiar with Wheaton's extensive acting work or not, this book gives you a good sense of the time as it relates to both the struggles of black actors and community theatre in general. The book is also filled with interesting tidbits about entertainment and literary figures of the day. For example, at one point of the tour, the late child actor Bobby Driscoll performed with the Company.

Overall, MASKS BEFORE THE ALTAR is an intriguing book. At only 179 pages, it is also a quick read. It should be required reading for actors just starting out in the business. It's also for anyone interested in the ins and outs of repertory theatre. Another reason would be to discover what it was like to be an educated black man living and working among whites in the early 1950s. If any of these areas strike your interest, you owe it to yourself to check out this book.

                            Book Description

As we now sit on the brink of Armageddon, it just could be that WE are under threat of an invasion — not as a country, but as a planet. And our weapons of mass destruction would be no match for what THEY could undoubtedly bring to the show. If we are clear on nothing else, the many theories of alien invasions all seem to agree on one thing — WE can't beat THEM. At least, not technologically.

"The Riddle of Cthulhu," by Ray Emerson, offers a neo-classical odyssey in which humanity must determine who or what the aliens are, and then come to grips with the most serious problem Man has yet faced — how to avoid total annihilation. Two young lovers and their companions are at the heart of this tale of bravery, adventure, and an insidious alien invasion.

The ancient myth of the devil, Cthulhu, and the Necronomicon of the Abdul al-Hazred have long gripped science fiction and fantasy readers with the sheer horror of the unknowable. In this story, Cthulhu has reoccupied the Earth with his evil "Old Ones" and is bent on destroying Mankind. Emerson explores the eternal battle between the forces of good and evil, and further intertwines this clash with the age-old mystery: "Where did we come from and why are we here?" And we are left with one final question of our own: "Could WE actually pull this thing off and beat THEM?"

                            2 out of 5 stars Not a satisfying read.......2005-12-30

My experience with this book was frustrating. I knew not to expect a traditional Lovecraft story, but was still unsatisfied. The characters came across as fake and soulless, while their dialogue and actions sometimes made no sense. The characters motivations seemed to materialize out of thin air, all of which did not help me to relate to the characters at all.

The story itself was less interesting than one would hope for with such a promising premise. The introduction really captured my imagination, but once we join the main characters, disappointment ensues. I found myself pushing through most pages, giving the author the benefit of the doubt until Ulysses and Cybele finished their adventure. I did appreciate attempts to mix Greek mythology with the Cthulhu universe, but overall, I feel dumber for having read this book.

3 out of 5 stars Not for Lovecraft purists.......2005-08-30

This is not a bad book, but it's not good Lovecraft. Yog-Sothoth has now become an "extension" of Cthulhu(?), and this whole story is definitely not in any Lovecraft, or Derleth, or any follower of Lovecraft, mold. With that out of the way, it's not a bad story. A little too much emphasis on sex, but that's not unusual for today's writers. The characters are a little two dimensional and just slightly too "heroic" for their own good. If you love Lovecraft, don't even think of reading or buying this book.

3 out of 5 stars Time, the Forth Dimension.......2005-02-07

I don't generally dwell on typos in a vanity press book. Accidents happen, and when you are doing most of the work yourself, they seem to happen more often. But in this case the misspelling of 'fourth' turns out to be one of the highlights of the book. And it does make a peculiar kind of sense.

Ray Emerson's freshman novel is and adaption of Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos into the context of an attack in the genetic structure of the human race. Somewhere out in space, the Elder Gods (also known as 'good old squid-face') have devised a plan to take over the earth by using a comet to sprinkle us with alien DNA. Now, faced with the sudden appearance of beautiful blond vampires who eat sailors, the secret agencies of the free world unite to stave of this horrific invasion.

It's up to Detective Ulysses Martini and beautiful psychic Cybele Sikorsky to solve a string of ugly murders and chase the cause into the dark caverns and oceans beneath New Hampshire. Or rather, that's what their doing when they're not in the bedroom. Lovecraft, who I believe was something of a prude, will be turning over in his grave.

What is interesting about this book is Emerson's efforts to develop scientific explanations for Lovecraft's evil creations. He also tries to fit Cthulhu into Judeo-Christian mythology. In neither case does he succeed well, since Lovecraft intended his creations to be just what they were - mysterious and terrifying denizens of a world gone dark. Explanations will always ring false because they are never more than one person's opinion. That Emerson has to modify Lovecraft a bit to make everything work doesn't help.

The book is a little too roughly written, a little too focused on sex, and a little too prone to overblown language to be a success. On the other hand, Emerson demonstrates a unique ability to explain the scientific complexities behind his story making. There is potential here and the book does have it's moments. My feeling is that, if Emerson were to learn how to flesh out his characters and build up his narrative, he could very easily be an entertaining writer.

Be warned that the more you like Lovecraft, the more you are likely to be irritated by some of Emerson's reinterpretations. The book lacks what we like best about Lovecraft, the brooding sense of doom that inhabits his horror stories. If on the other hand you are looking for a breezy bit of heroic sci-fi you might very well like this story.

5 out of 5 stars Curled Up With a Good Book.......2004-10-16

The Riddle of Cthulhu is a mix of ancient mythology, science fact and science fiction combined to form a mesmerizing tale that is hard to put down.

The cast of characters includes aliens who manifest themselves in a beguiling manner, protagonists who are named for Homeric heroes, manufactured critters beyond grotesque and enough seesaws between good battling evil to please the most discriminating reader.

The plot moves along steadily and is assisted by well-drawn characters whose personal foibles are believable. The science facts that are utilized so effectively give the whole book a ring of authenticity even in the face of the most outlandish "special effects". The science fiction becomes believable mostly because everything else is so recognizable and familiar.

Cybele calls to mind Ripley of Alien fame. She is a strong female character who manages to stand up very nicely against the boys, both human and otherwise. Some of the varmints she battles would give most anyone nightmares. It is refreshing to see a female hero for a change. The conflicts between Cybele and the men of the group provide a telling glance into the psyche of men faced with a strong, independent woman.

The Riddle of Cthulhu is the kind of book that, if you have to put it down before you finish it, keeps you wondering what comes next. That is the hallmark of a truly good book.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Read But Totally Unlovecraftian.......2004-08-09

The author's style doesn't bother me much, the plot made sense and even involved me a little, and the romance was amusing, bordering on titillating. However, as usual, the author has adopted the Derlethian heresy of good vs. evil, meaning that the story cannot be lovecraftian in any way.

                            Book Description

Colette peters, the celebrated queen of the confectionary arts, unveils an inspiring resource for serious home bakers, professional chefs, and aficionados of Colette's incredible edible architecture. The ingenious cake decorator - whose miraculous and luscious concoctions have appeared everywhere from White House Christmases to royal weddings - presents a master class in cake design and decoration, alongside an all-new selection of her own cake designs. With Cakes to Dream On, Colette's inspired creations can now be rendered into show-stopping cakes of your own.

Cakes to Dream On reveals the secrets to fashioning gorgeous and utterly distinctive cakes for all occasions - whether it's an opulent marriage reception (the majestic Ivory Wedding Cake) or a fanciful children's party (the whimsical Homage to Dr. Seuss). Colette presents designs for cake architecture ranging from the imperial splendor of Dolce de Medici, to the elegant grace of Bride's Vintage Cameo, to the topsy-turvy daydream of Mad Tea Party.

Colette begins with the foundations: she illuminates step by step the process of constructing a multitiered cake, from determining serving sizes and choosing appropriate cake pans to making fillings, and ultimately stacking layers so they don't tumble off the table. Cakes to Dream On also discloses insider tricks of the trade: Colette's easy-to-follow instructions in techniques such as sugarwork, gumpaste, brush embroidery, and piping will help readers recreate the spectacular effects of this singular confectioner's toolbox.

Bakers - and their enthusiastic audiences - will discover that these sensual masterpieces tantalize the palate as much as they do the eye. Colette's cake recipes include the Coco-Loco Cake, an alluring marriage of coconut and coffee; the Meringue Buttercream and its luscious lemon, raspberry, and mocha variants; and the ambrosial caramel-tinged Heavenly White Cake.

As breathtaking as Colette's cake works appear, her clear explanations of technique are meant to stimulate readers' creative instincts and give them ideas for crafting their own distinctive confections. With more than 150 dazzling full-color photographs illustrating both processes and finished presentations, and more detailed instruction than ever before, Cakes to Dream On will inspire readers to create their own mouthwatering masterpieces. Colette's master class is truly a launchpad for cake lovers' own confectionary visions.

When I bought this book,I knew it would be very advanced, but I was very wrong. This book is a cake catalog of the things that Colette Peters can do. The pictures are great, and there are a lot of ideas, but very little explaining and how-to photos. I thought I would learn how to make crooked cakes, but it turns out I learned more from a blog than this book.If you want ideas,it's great,if you want directions, search somewhere else.

I bought this book for my mom for mother's day and asked her to make me the seashell shaped cake for my birthday yesterday and she was pretty intimidated at first not thinking she'd be able to pull off such a realistic work of art..especially because she had never even used fondant before...but she soon found out it was WAYYY EASIER than she ever imagined! :) Collette really breaks down the process for the common kitchen dweller. You don't have to be Picasso to create these masterpieces. This book provides excellent descriptions, precise illustrations and absolutely gorgeous photographs! 5stars!! :)

I had bought all of her cake books except this one and "Colette's Christmas" (going for $200 now as opposed to the usual $30+-... what does that tell you about her popularity??) (YOU GO GIRL) However, I just received Colette's Cakes and am a little disappointed. This must be one of Colette's 1st books. These cakes offered no real challenge at all for me. Hey, I guess you have to start somewhere. Colette has grown and developed so much!! I really am one of her biggest fans!! Just thought you might want to know this book is a little light on the creative side, compared to Colette's work we know and love today!! :) P.S. - Her Chocolate Bourbon Cake Recipe in her book "Colette's Birthday Cakes" is UNBELIEVABLY delicious!!! I made the cover cake and was SO "THE HERO" at that party!! Thanks Colette!! :D

                            3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2005-09-07

This book gives a lot of information on how to do the cakes and the necessary tools needed, but some of the cakes were just, my daughter's view "just awful!"

5 out of 5 stars Great book for the beginner ready to delve into cake deco!.......2004-07-15

I would have to say that this book may not be nearly as good as Colette's Christmas book, but it still gets a well deserved 5 stars!!!! The cakes are realistic for someone to make with a little skill in cake decorating and a willingness to "get over themselves" on whether or not they're able to do it. Even if one has never worked with fondant before, the books explanations are easy to follow. I especially like the incorporation of tools from around the house that can be used for cake decorating. This book is very good for the beginner ready to delve into cake decorating because it covers basic techniques in a simple to use format.
