    Book Description

J.M.W. Turner is one of the greatest artists the world has ever known. His output was prolific and astonishingly varied. Focusing on 125 paintings and drawings from the Tate, which owns the world's largest collection of Turner's work, this lavishly illustrated book provides a fresh and lively survey of his genius. Familiar masterpieces are reproduced along with less well-known prints and sheets from sketchbooks; subject matter ranges from landscapes and natural subjects to ancient and modern history; marine subjects; literary illustration; and images of contemporary life.

In his essay, David Blayney Brown reveals the paradoxes and contrasts that abound in Turner's life and work: as a painter he looked both backward and forward, bridging the gap between the 18th century and modernism, compelled constantly to reexamine and reinvent his own art, with astonishing success.

      Book Description

      J. M. W. Turner is one of the greatest artists the world has ever known. Both admired and ridiculed in his lifetime, his output was prolific and astonishingly varied. Focusing on 125 works, this book provides a fresh and lively survey of all aspects of the Tate Turner collections, introducing not only familiar masterpieces but many other works--such as sheets from sketchbooks and prints--that are less often seen. These highlight the extraordinary breadth of achievement of this great Romantic painter. In an extended introductory essay David Blayney Brown discusses Turner's life and work, revealing the contrasts and paradoxes that abound in both: as a painter he looked both backwards and forwards, bridging the gap between the 18th century and modernism, compelled constantly to reexamine and reinvent his own art.

Did you know that Turner invented many details that make its landscapes so impressive and picturesque? Let's take Nantes cathedral, for instance, when you look at the way Turner painted it you wander if it is the cathedral you go to every sunday morning. In fact, during the splendid exhibition of this Loire Valley sketches and paintings in Nantes in 1998, we discovered that a painter had no obligation to tell the true story about your home town... This book is full of sketches (Turner made a lot of them on the spot, then painted some of them when he was back in England). You will appreciate the exquisite colours palette and, if you plan to visit Loire Valley, you will bring this book with you.

                  Book Description

A book by kids to help your kids deal with cancer in the family

When Abigail and Adrienne’s mom told them she had cancer, they were afraid. When the two sisters (then ages 11 and 9) couldn’t find any books for kids that explained what might happen to their mother and what they might expect, they decided to write one themselves. The result? Our Mom Has Cancer, a humorous, honest, hopeful account of the year their mother underwent treatment for breast cancer, delightfully illustrated with drawings by Abigail and Adrienne.

“This is by far the best of several children’s picture books written about a parent with cancer. Because it is written and illustrated by two sisters, it conveys what kids want to know. It [shows] the passage of time during treatment, and it [shows] that people were loving and kind and hopeful in the midst of a rotten time . . . .This book is excellent, and I would recommend it to any parent who has been diagnosed with cancer.”
--a mom from Cedar Rapids, Iowa

My daughter is undergoing chemo. She was told she would lose her hair, so before she lost all of her hair I ordered this book for my grandson. It helped tremendously for him to understand why Mama was bald. I recommend this book highly to anyone who has a child whose parent is going through chemo.

5 out of 5 stars Best picture book about parental cancer.......2001-11-15

Many children's books about cancer in a parent treat it as movie disease: a convenient way to introduce mortality. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I needed a way to let my children know what they could expect as far as my therapy, and let them know what might happen emotionally.

This is by far the best of several children's picture books written about a parent with cancer. Because it is written and illustrated by two sisters, it conveys what kids want to know. It showed the passage of time during treatment, and it showed that people were loving and kind and hopeful in the midst of a rotten time.

This book is excellent, and I would recommend it to any parent who has been diagnosed with cancer as a way to open discussions with elementary-aged and younger children.

I go to school at Village Elementry in Coronado. Adrienne and Abigail are the cusins of a kid in my class named Paul. They got to come to our school and read the book to us. I think it was very good. It really is based on a true story! The book was about there mom who had breast cancer. They even wrote a hat song in the story! I give the book two thumbs up!

When Abigail and Adrienne's mom told them she had cancer, they were afraid. But when the girls couldn't find any books that explained what might happen to their mother and what they might expect, they wrote one themselves.

They tell readers when their mother was tired during treatment, friends and family pitched in to help cook and to push her in her wheelchair. When chemotherapy made their mom's hair fall out, friends and family threw a hat party for her and honored her with an original song.

Their mom's hair has grown back, and Abigail and Adrienne have found that their family is closer than ever. The girls' story will show other youngsters that they are not alone in their experience with a loved one's cancer.

                  Book Description

Each year, approximately 1.5 million people in the United States and Canada are diagnosed with cancer. This is one family's story.

Winner of the 2005 Eisner Award in the category of Best Digital Comic for the original Web version, Mom's Cancer is now available as a graphic novel. An honest, unflinching, and sometimes humorous look at the practical and emotional effect that serious illness can have on patients and their families, Mom's Cancer is a story of hope-uniquely told in words and illustrations.

Brian Fies is a freelance journalist whose mother was diagnosed with lung cancer. As he and his two sisters struggled with the effects of her illness and her ongoing recovery from treatment, Brian processed the experience in his journal, which took the form of words and pictures.

The story that came to be known as "Mom's Cancer" first gained notice on the internet. It was posted anonymously, with the intention of sharing information and insights gained from his family's experience. Thanks to the words and illustrations of Brian Fies, readers have already responded that they were surprised and gratified to realize that they weren't alone. Abrams Image is proud to bring this story to a whole new audience.

I'm a consumer health educator and lost my father to a very rare kind of cancer when he was 58, so this book hit me on more than one level of my life. Fies has done a wonderful job. What I find most impressive is that Fies doesn't shy away from discussing the "blame" aspect of a cancer diagnosis. The question of personal accountability for disease is very much part of the family conversation during a health crisis--whether there is scientific evidence for causality or not!--and it needs to be talked about. I'm hoping this graphic novel does make that conversation easier for all of us.

My family shared many of the experiences of the author's family during my mother's cancer. It's compelling, touching and hopeful.

5 out of 5 stars If someone in your family has cancer...........2006-04-19

It's less about Mom than her three adult children (pseudonymously portrayed here as the narrator, Nurse Sis, and Kid Sis) and how they cope with the news and subsequent treatment for Mom. Vivid visual metaphors (the Operation Game, superheroes, the "tightrope" of treatment) combine with heartfelt writing (smokers won't be pleased with how they're portrayed) for an unforgettable portrait of a family in crisis. It has a simple, clean graphic style that will appeal to readers who are not regular readers of graphic novels.

If your mother smokes, this, and and "the patch" would make an excellent present.

5 out of 5 stars A much needed book for a small child with a sick parent.......2001-09-27

I found this book for my four year-old son who is having difficulty coping with my serious illness. In this book, a little boy's mother fights breast cancer. When she goes to the hospital for operations or treatments, the boy stays with his grandma. The boy experiences a whole lot of anger, sadness, fear and frustrations. He asks some important questions which his father or grandma answer with wisdom and sensitivity. When the boy tries to engage his mother in an activity and his wiped out mother is short with him, grandma intervenes and explains. When the boy acts out because his mother cannot pay attention to him, his mother, grandma and father all deal with the problem compassionately.

When I read this book aloud to my son, he interrupts every few sentences of reading to tell me his own feelings and recount his own experiences. Although we're still struggling with some fear and worry, this book and a couple of others are helping us.

                        Book Description

In 1997, Shari Lichtenstein, M.S.W., a social worker at Loyola University Medical Center (Maywood, IL) authored a book entitled My Mom Has Cancer. This children's book has helped many families begin to cope with and understand the changes that a family undergoes when their mother is diagnosed with cancer. The book is written from the viewpoint of "Dan," a ten year old boy whose mother has cancer. Each page includes a drawing by a child of one of her patients. These drawings represent each child's strong feelings about the experience of having a mom with cancer. The drawings are uses as another way for children to see that there are, in fact, others whose mothers have cancer, and that the feelings they may be experiencing are similar to those of kids their own age. It is both educational and heartwarming, and with the emerging focus on the value of family and support systems, this is a much-needed book for both family members and health care professionals.

This is such a good book for anyone whose parent has been really sick. It is written by a mother and son and the emotions that go along with having cancer. This book can be applied to any extended illness. Read it, even if you've never been sick, you will understand the hardships of the illness through two different perspectives.
