Book Description
To Lafcadio Hearn at the turn of the century, Japan's most priceless objets d'art were not the delicate masterpieces of its fine arts but its women. Today, the women of Japan are viewed with a mixture of old stereotypes and new misconceptions. The Mother of Dreams is an anthology of modern Japanese fiction portraying Japanese women, arranged according to five categories: the maiden, the mistress, the wife, the mother, and the working woman.
These short stories span a period that has seen great changes in the status of Japanese women. There has also been a transformation in women s expectations of themselves and of the people around them. Such changes are manifest in the treatment of the protagonists in this anthology, some of whom adhere to traditional roles while others seek to find new functions and attitudes.
The young maidens in the three short pieces by Nobel laureate Kawabata Yasunari contrast sharply with the contemporary women, such as the ordinary housewife and budding actress portrayed by Mori Yoko. But just as significant as change is continuity. The mistress-turned-stripper-turned-prostitute of Nagai Kafu's immediate postwar world has much in common with Kaiko Takeshi's virgin-whore from the period of the Korean War. Such images are in turn challenged by the middle-aged geisha portrayed by Enchi Fumiko and the young mother who abandons her child in Setouchi Harumi's piece, women whose depth of emotion defies the stereotypes assigned to them by their class and their occupation.
Professor Ueda's anthology presents some of the finest work of Japan's major writers, both male and male, on a subject of truly universal significance. At a time when change and continuity pose problems as well as solutions in the search for identity and meaning in our lives, The Mother of Dreams provides thought-provoking and meaningful material for us all.

Authors put you in the scenes while allowing you to imagine.......1998-06-29
Stories are beautifully written and give you a sense of Asian culture minus the stereotypes. The stories are often poetic. You are right there in the scenes, but authors are not so conscientious that they tell you everything. They sometimes write with a distant eye and allow you to use your imagination. Stories range from thirty-something married women being jelous of twenty-something married women to slick geisha girls. I am not Asian and enjoyed learning about the culture through the talented writers, who gave the stories a soul without having an agenda.

More fighting and fanservice fun from Battle Vixens.......2007-05-14
Those of you who are already following Yuji Shiozaki's intriguing, but sometimes convoluted story of professional fighting high schoolers, reincarnation, paranormal powers, and busty girls unable to keep their uniforms on for very long will find Volume 10 another funny, titillating, action-packed installment of BATTLE VIXENS. Those who haven't however, may not only have no idea what's going on, but could also be slightly offended by the high level of over-the-top, shameless fanservice and violence that's typical of both BATTLE VIXENS and Shiozaki's other popular manga, BATTLE CLUB. But amid the graphic gratutiousness, BATTLE VIXEN's biggest strengths are its characters and the dark and sexy world they live in. After nine volumes of character introductions, Volume 10 is the book in the series that events in the previous volumes begin to come together.
A manga that needs understanding........2006-07-19
For those that are truly confused in the story line. You should probably actually research the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It is quite interesting that a manga is actually based with fan service, as well as historical relevance. This is absolutely a great manga series to read. I still collect because of its historical relevence, and Hakafu :3. To actually understand this series you have to read into a bit more.
This series is unique to its type; a manga based with history, and fan service smothered on top of it. If you guys wanted an in depth series try Gunslinger Girl which I reccomend to anyone that enjoys espioniage stuff, and futuristic stuff. Battle Vixen, or Ikki Tousen is a wonderful series that I reccomend to those that enjoy combat babes, and comedy on the side. The story isn't met to be handled with serious thought, but rather handled in a light mood. So quit over analyzing stuff you fellow nerds and geeks, and you fan boys.
Hakafu Sonsaku is a unique character which I thouroughly enjoy, not because of her character design, but her personality. She may be a ditz, but her determination to become stronger, and fight the strongest no matter who it is absolutely beautiful. This is the greatest series to read, but an enjoyable series to just sit down and enjoy. Once again, if you guys want an in depth story line, stay far away from this. I still don't understand how people get confused over this manga. Just don't skip a book XD. I did that once... never again!
Flawless Art.......2006-07-12
I'm a manga artist, and I bought this book for the sole purpose of having a visual resource of busty female action scenes. The art in this series is consistent and masterfully executed. It also displays an extremely effective use of foreshortening.
However, the story is terribly confusing and hard to follow. I have up to book 6 and I still don't understand what's going on.
But if you just want it for the artwork, it's well worth it.
big breasts,expensive softporn........2005-07-13
The drawings are lovely and very pretty. Really sexy. Hmm. You can understand, that this novel is worth buying for a certain reason...but then again, worth buying? The price is a little bit high - you can better try `google~hooker` or anything like that and then it is free. Unless you are desperately fan of Hakufu, the main character, which I think is a chance of 0.9 % out of 100%.
Anyway,on to the story.
Hakufu, the girl with the ass and breasts, needs to fight to get the power of 1000 (as far as I think I get the story.) Her mother doesn't want that she fights...but she does it anyway. And then there is her cousin. Yes,he is her cousin, but he is looking at her breasts anyway. And then there are the enemies+ one of them has the same earring as Hakufu's mother (although I saw everybody else wearing it too? I don't know what it is supposed to mean, but I think we will get to know that in the next volume.)
There is also a black haired girl and I think (or what I got from the story) is that she gets sexual pleasure out of fighting. And she is really good at it,too.
Honestly, maybe I just didn't got this story. Maybe I just misunderstood it,something that happens a lot to me. But when I just read it without searching for hidden tragic plotlines,It just annoys me,everything from the ultra shy cousin to the black haired fightress but Hakufu wins the jackpot. I am still searching for tragic hidden plotlines, and I will definitialy give this book a second chance, not because I miss my money but because I think there has to be something good in anything and there must be a reason why people love this.
Not THAT Good, Not THAT Bad.......2005-04-29
When I bought the first and second volumes, I really was very disappointed and wished I never bought them. Besides the small funny moments with Hakufu and the Three Kingdoms plot, I just wanted to get my money back. The first two volumes were terribly plotless, with hard-to-understand slang and just boobs everywhere! Plus, a lot of the characters' personalities were getting me annoyed.
BUT...I proceeded to buy the third volume. By then, the plot, the slang, and the characters were beginning to grow on me. It could hardly be called "liking" the manga. I was merely putting up with it.
And then, I bought the fourth volume.
I think that's when I began to fall in love.
Unlike the first three volumes, the fourth actually gets somewhere. I began to get more of an emotional attachment to all the characters that use to annoy the heck outta me. The plot was introduced....Explaining the Magatamas....How all the characters were trying to break free of a destiny already pre-written for them to act on.
This I found very original, since with most other mangas I've read and animes I've watched, the characters are trying to FIND their destiny. In Battle Vixens, the characters want to MAKE their destiny.
The fact that it practically counts as softcore porn is just a bonus for the pervs ;)!
so, sure. this manga can seem not worth the money, but it deserves to be checked out. borrow it from a friend or something, or the library XD! i can definitely say this is one of my favorites.
even if Shimei gets annoying time to time.

And...?.......2006-09-25
You don't need this book to play ghouls or have them in your game. The book is based on 2nd edition, spends a lot of time talking about how little ghouls know about vamps, etc. Save your money and time by creating basic rules of your own.
Scary? Adult? I don't think so..........2001-11-25
This is a great book, but I wanted to comment that a lot of people read it and were scared by it. Some of it deals with rather adult content, but this is White Wolf we're talking about here: almost EVERYTHING in the World Of Darkness is adult, mature, scary, and...well, dark.
I didn't find it frightening at all. Then again, this comes from a guy who read Clanbook: Baali without batting an eyelid.
So if I had to "warn" others about the adult content of this book, I'd honestly say that it's nothing out of the ordinary in the World Of Darkness.
Great but scary, perhaps a bit too scary........2001-11-18
I love ghouls. When I'm the storyteller, I make sure we have ghouls in our games and I love when players are willing to take on ghouls as characters. Why? They are an interesting combination of vampire and human, a mixture of emotions, and far more powerful that most storytellers and players would like to believe. This book gives you some insights into ghouls though I've seen other passages in other "world of darkness" books which should have been included here. I was expecting a read guide to all ghouls you see so that did disappoint me greatly. The pictures are probably some of the scariest in the series and in fact have turned off one really great player from being a ghoul -- very sad because he was so talented and he had such potential as this character. I think another ghoul book perhaps modeled on the "Children of the Night" book would be a great aid. Surely there are very powerful and very important ghouls in the world of darkness too.
They love, they hate you, they are deadly........2001-10-04
Ghouls Fatal Addiction focuses the social interactions between ghouls and their respective domitors (masters), with special consideration of the various clan habits and the roles ghouls can play within and outside of kindred society. Unfortunately some chapters appear twice, first in the subjective view of an ghoul or vampire then described in an objective rules-style. This seems rather odd and makes reading a bit boring.
Though the book has many details about the ghoulsý anatomy, it lacks information on the perception of ghouls via disciplines such as Auspex, Thaumaturgy etc. Can you ýseeý only her or ever her domitor? Etc.
If you are a vampire, always remind every ghoul, even if she loves you, might be a threat and kill you one day without warning.
The Darkest World of 'Darkness' Supplement yet.......2000-11-27
This book, moreso than any other recently released WoD product places emphasis on just how sick, twisted ,and screwed up the World of Darkness is. Ghouls have always gotten the shaft, but now, the storyteller has the materials at hand to properly motivate that unrepetant bloodjunkie,or some smug Ghoul player who cops a quick fix,'lives forever', and moves along. Addiction, what happens to a ghoul feeding off Malkavians or Nosferatsu, Blood Bonds, Revanents, it's all covered. If you're a newer storyteller and are choosing books to purchase, pick up the two core books and Ghouls. HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECCOMENDATION.
Book Description
With Cover & Bake, the editors at Cook's Illustrated set out to revive the venerable casserole. From Turkey Tetrazzini and Chicken Divan to Crab Imperial and Hoppin' John, casserole cooking represents the ingenuity and practicality of the American cook. In Cover & Bake, the editors set out to investigate the old standards and in the process have re-imagined the art of the one-dish meal to meet the demands of today's cook.
Here you will find classic assemble and bake casseroles like Macaroni and Cheese and Creamy Chicken and Rice as well as more inventive dishes like Mediterranean Chicken Bake and Polenta Casserole with Italian Sausage. We've experimented with techniques that allow you to cook everything in just one pot where possible, avoiding the need for hours of preparation and clean up just to get a casserole in the oven. And nearly every recipe can be made ahead allowing busy cooks to serve these wholesome dishes on a busy weeknight.
Looking beyond what most people consider to be a casserole, the editors offer a rather original take on the subject with inventive skillet "casseroles," slow cooker meals that are really worth serving, pot pies with multiple topping options (many of which you can make ahead), oven braises and stews that cook in a low oven for hours so you won't have to stand over a hot stove, and breakfast and brunch dishes that can be assembled the night before.
In addition, this book contains all the relevant tastings and testings conducted in America's Test Kitchen. Learn which casserole dish is our hands-down favorite. Are all storage containers created the same? Want to know which slow cooker has the best combination of features?
In short, Cover & Bake is filled with 200 one-dish meals for everyday cooking. We've made these casseroles a whole lot better tasting while making sure that what everyone loves about casseroles remains - the fact that they are practical one-dish meals that require a minimum of fuss and last minute attention.

Good recipes.......2007-04-26
I have made several recipes from this book and they have been great and easy to follow. this is the first cookbook I own from Cook's Illustrated and I'm now adding one more to my collection.
My Favorite Cookbook.......2007-04-03
This is my favorite cookbook, and I use it often. It not only has wonderful recipes that I use often, but also features little snippets and articles such as which tomato paste is best, how to know if your eggs are fresh, and how to choose a dutch oven.
My favorite recipes are the Macaroni and Cheese, which is a favorite at pot luck dinners, the Beef Stroganoff, Beef and Guiness Stews, 4 cheese pasta with basil and tomatoes, and there are dozens more I haven't attempted yet.
This book is not about your mother's (or maybe just my mother's) casseroles. The ingredients are top notch and the result is fantastic. I've given it as a gift on several occasions and can't recommend it enough.
There is not, as another person mentioned, an abundance of photos, and I do wish there were more, but I'd prefer great recipes and fewer photos over fabulous glossy photos and lackluster recipes, which I've found in plenty of other books!
Hungry for more pictures.......2007-03-08
I am inspired by photos of the finished products in any cookbook. So, this one disappointed with only a handful of photos. I would pay a few $ more for an abundance of delicious looking pictures. Cook's Illustrated is very dependable for excellent recipes and continues to be in this book. They have ironed out the wrinkles and achieve perfection with these recipes.
Great recipes.......2007-02-05
When I look at reader reviews of cookbooks, I want to see names of specific recipes that were outstanding, so here's one I tried last night: page 61, Chicken Casserole with Spring Vegetables and Tarragon Cream Sauce (oh, gosh, I just noticed it says it's for 6-8 people, and my husband and I snarfed down half!) Any other recommendations out there??
SO GOOD I BOUGHT TWO.......2007-01-09
This is a great cookbook for anyone that has to cook for a group or just likes to cook dishes that can be enjoyed for the next few days. It is filled with warm and comforting recipes from a wide range of backrounds. Every recipe I have tried has come out as wonderfully as it was described. As is the case with all of the Best Recipe Classics cook books by the Cooks Illustrated editors this book includes comprehensive descriptions of the history of the recipes as well as the trial and error lessons that the test kitchen discovered in the process of perfecting the recipe. I have enjoyed this book so much that I gave it to a friend for Christmas.

The mysteries of cream of tartar revealed! How to make maximum use of blackening bananas! The hidden meaning of folding in dry ingredients until just blended! Perfect pie crusts for perfect fools! It's all here in Baking Illustrated, from banana bread to pecan bars, and everything imaginable in between--500-plus pages of densely packed, illustration rich, photo finished information all devoted to baking. Tools, techniques, ingredients, tips, and perfect, tested recipes.
There's cooking and there's baking, and the two should never be confused. Good cooks are ever commendable. Good bakers, on the other hand, have something about them bigger than skill or imagination, something that reaches back to the beginning of agriculture and the first inklings of civilization. Good bakers are their own mystic society. So hats off to Cook's Illustrated for throwing open the doors and sharing the mysteries with the rest of us. Baking Illustrated absolutely has it all. You'll find chapters devoted to "Quick Breads, Muffins, Biscuits, and Scones"; "Yeast Breads and Rolls"; "Pizza, Focaccia, and Flatbread"; "Pies and Tarts"; "Pastry"; "Crisps, Cobblers, and Other Fruit Desserts"; "Cakes"; and "Cookies, Brownies, and Bar Cookies". No mean undertaking, all that. Tools are tested and names are named. Techniques are stripped back then rebuilt. Cook's Illustrated carries all this off with a style and relish for inquiry and detail that sets a standard. Nothing is taken for granted because there's no fudge room with baking. It works or it doesn't. So trust is a big issue. And the end result of all the mighty labors of the Cook's Illustrated staff is text you can trust. This is a baking book that works.
And those blackening bananas? Simply keep adding them to a Ziplock bag you store in the freezer, then use them when you wish and as you like. --Schuyler Ingle
Book Description
Packed with 350 recipes and 500 illustrations, Baking Illustrated brings you inside America's Test Kitchen, where the test cooks and editors have exhaustively examined every ingredient, technique, and piece of equipment that is critical to your baking success. Have you ever wondered how long you can keep that can of baking powder in your cabinet or what brand of chocolate will yield the best brownies or flourless chocolate cake? Or puzzled over the key to making pizza crust that is thin and crisp or cookies that bake evenly? The editors at Cook's Illustrated have pulled back the curtain on the seemingly complex world of baking to give you the answers to these and thousands of other questions.
Recipes range from quick breads and yeast breads to pizza, cookies, cakes, pastry, crisps, and cobblers to all manner of pies and tarts. And they feature American home classics (including Southern Cornbread, Pecan Sandies, and Sour Cream Coffee-cake) as well as more contemporary favorites (such as Rosemary Focaccia, Orange-Almond Biscotti, and Chocolate Truffle Tart) and European baked goods (such as Brioche, Black Forest Cake, and Tarte Tatin). Every recipe has been exhaustively researched and tested to bring you the "best" recipe (we'll let you be the judge), along with detailed and precise explanations from everything from why you should use unsalted butter to what is the best oven temperature and why it all matters. We've also tested every kind of baking equipment available, from mixers and food processors to the humblest spatulas and loaf pans, and the results of our experiments are described throughout so you can benefit from our trial and error.
And because we know that good baking depends on understanding basic techniques, Baking Illustrated features a 16-page, full-color insert that shows you how to avoid some of the most common pitfalls in baking, such as overmixed egg whites, cheesecakes that crack, and bread dough that has overproofed. (We know a lot about mistakes - we've made them all.) We don't want you to take the time to bake a layer cake from scratch only to settle for the "homemade" look. The visuals in this insert show you how to do it right. Color photographs demonstrate good results as well as bad, and hand-drawn step-by-step illustrations help you to perfect your technique for fail-safe baking.
Baking Illustrated also gives you the handy tutorials on baking basics, including how to stock your pantry and how to store and measure ingredients, cream butter and roll out pie dough. A master baking class between two covers, Baking Illustrated takes the guesswork out of baking and will expand your repertoire without ever losing sight of your ultimate goal: making family favorites that taste better than ever.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for learning the ins and outs of WHY in baking.......2007-09-23
I just read through all the reviews and I have to say, some people don't make sense... wanting an ice cream recipe... it says BAKING Illustrated, Complaining that it is full of text when on the cover it says "The Practical Kitchen Companion for the Home Baker". I agree some more photos would be nice, but it does say "illustrated" not baking photographed.
Now, I don't own this book YET, but I have it checked out from the library and have been reading it cover to cover practically and as a pretty good home cook and as someone who is just starting a cake business from home, this book is EXCELLENT. Way too many books are just fancy photos, fancy ingredients that are hard to find and complicated beyond reason. They aren't things you can make from just opening your refrigerator and pantry. Too many books skimp on HOW to do things and WHY. Let's face it, most of us didn't have the opportunity to learn to bake at home with grandma or mom on a regular basis. We don't know what it really means when it says to roll out a dough in a certain way. Most of us don't have enough practice to know which flours are good for what and so on. This book really helps with TEACHING the basics and with introducing us to products that are better for this or this.
And, I have to agree with most of their evaluations. With my own learning of 14 years of baking, I too agree about the Rolling pin, the whole wheat flour, the way to cut in fat into dough, the type of measuring cups/spoons and so on. But, I'm also learning things I didn't know - about corn meal and protein content in leading flour brands - ALL good stuff.
I also like that these recipes are BASIC. I have an old Better Homes and Garden cookbook which is my go to cookbook for basics, but I was VERY dismayed that their newer cookbooks have gone all fancy. Gone are the simpler cobbler recipes. Now it's Polenta cobbler! We all need to START with the basics and only then move on to the "gourmet" stuff. Plus, at least for me and for my customers so far, it's the basics people like.
So... I'm buying this book. I've looked through a LOT of baking books and this is the best I've seen. I thought the Cake Bible would be the one for me, but that book stinks... Well, the cakes do. Some of those recipes are great, but in general the recipes in that book make DRY cakes and a lot of people in an online cake community say the same thing. Learned that the HARD way! Ugh!
I'm very excited about this book and can't wait to try most of the recipes. I'll update when I actually BAKE more from here. Right now I'm just excited from all the tips and new things I've learned from the text.
Baking Illustrated.......2007-08-03
I found this cookbook to be very interesting, and helpful. It explained a lot of techniques that were especially useful.
A little disappointing..........2007-04-24
As a beginner baker I found this book totally uninspiring; 500 pages thick without very many photos. Normally I would never buy cook books without beautiful illustrative photos, but because this one said "Baking Illustrated" with excellent ratings from other customers I assumed it would be wonderful. I'm not even motivated to try any recipes here because they are really text-heavy and written in such a complicated language like others previously commented. I am now further turned off by the fact that some of the reviews here say the recipes contained typos.
great baking guide.......2007-04-03
I got this book as a gift. It is really great for dessert, with a large variety of baking projects from blueberry cobbler to anise biscotti. The best part about it is that each recipe comes with a prologue where the writers describe in detail their process in choosing the recipe, so that you as a reader know what can go wrong.
The only problem I have with this book is that many recipes are very large, so I always have to halve them. When I halved the (extremely delicious) peanut butter cookie recipe, it still made two baking sheets full of cookies! The default quantity in here seems to be for huge parties, and sometimes the recipes don't divide easily (how do you split three eggs?). It would be nice if they were sized more appropriately for everyday use. A very minor complaint for a really great cook book.
I love this book!.......2007-03-16
I call it my baking bible, and I'm very protective of it. I'll gladly share my baked treats with friends and family, but I don't want to take away the magic of how I went form an average baker to having the confidence that everything coming out of my oven will be amazing. This book has also taken away my fear of trying new things. In the past if I found a good recipe I would hold on to it like glue, now I have a whole book full of them.
