Gilly Hopkins is a determined-to-be-unpleasant 11-year-old foster kid who the reader can't help but like by the end. Gilly has been in the foster system all her life, and she dreams of getting back to her (as she imagines) wonderful mother. (The mother makes these longings worse by writing the occasional letter.) Gilly is all the more determined to leave after she's placed in a new foster home with a "gross guardian and a freaky kid." But she soon learns about illusions--the hard way. This Newbery Honor Book manages to treat a somewhat grim, and definitely grown-up theme with love and humor, making it a terrific read for a young reader who's ready to learn that "happy" and "ending" don't always go together. (Ages 9 to 12) --Richard Farr
Book Description
Eleven-year-old Gilly has been stuck in more foster families than she can remember, and she's disliked them all. She has a county-wide reputation for being brash, brilliant, and completely unmanageable. So when she's sent to live with the Trotters -- by far the strangest family yet -- Gilly decides to put her sharp mind to work. Before long she's devised an elaborate scheme to get her real mother to come rescue her.
But the rescue doesn't work out, and the great Gilly Hopkins is left thinking that maybe life with the Trotters wasn't so bad ...

Sometimes it doesnt turn out to be what we want..............2007-03-25
....thats why I like this book. Everything we do isn't always happily ever after sometimes its just BLAH. You get pulled into this book and its hard to put it down. Even though its for young readers I still enjoy this book to this day. I remember my first time reading it and I still had a problem with having to stop.... must finish reading it. Katherine Paterson is a good author. Next stop Bridge to Terabithia.......*grin* Great Book!
An adult review.......2007-02-14
This book follows Gilly a foster child as she gorws up. Through her feeling of hate toward her foster mother and brother to her angst at school. Gilly learns that no matter how much anger, discomfort, and hardships you put people through the ones who really love you aren't going to stop because you did something bad.
The Great Gilly Hopkins.......2007-01-29
The book I read was called The Great Gilly Hopkins. It was written by Katherine Paterson. I would give this book a 4 in star rating. In this book the main character is Gadriel Hopkins, but people call her Gilly. I gave this book a 4 because it is basically all about giving people a chance and that they can change wants you give them that chance. He Great Gilly Hopkins is about a foster child named Gilly. She has been moving around a lot and she really doesnt like it. One day she moves to a house with a lady named Maime Trotter and her son Willam Earnest. She hates it at first and she wants to try to get out of there and try to get to California and move in with her mom. After a while of living with Maime Trotter she starts to really like it and have some fun. Then when she really doesnt want to move anymore her grandma comes and wants Gilly to come and live with her. Gilly is forced to move again. when she gets to her grandmas she hates it, but just like at Maime Trotter she gave it a chance and then she likes it. Something big happens next, but Im not going to say anymore. I guess you'll just have to read it yourself. I recommend you to read this book, Jacob have I loved, and The upstairs room. The are all very good books. I love to play basketball.
The Great Great Gilly Hopkins.......2006-12-21
Gilly is a foster child who moves from home to home. She's tough, loud, and hard to work with. She has a very strong personality. She'll scare you if you just look into her eyes. Gilly always wanted to see her mother. The book starts with Gilly going to a new home. There is Trotter, William Ernest, and Mr. Randolph. She's not so sure about her new home. She only wants to be with Courtney. (her mother)
The moral of the story is being loved by a family, not being independent. This is a heartwarming story about a girl, Gilly, who is first independent, then was part of a family.
This is a great story. I think it's great because I like Gilly's character. She's fun and tough at the same time. So if you like realistic fiction with toughness and silliness, you'll like this book!
the best of the "baddest".......2006-12-01
"Is there a book this good?" They would ask me. I don't think so! It is about a girl who has been to three different homes less than three years. Her name is Gilly, in this book she has to tendency to act as if she was the big bad wolf, Gilly notices that once she finally meets someone she really likes she has to go away, if only she was the smartest girl in the world she could stay in one place. Gilly has now met the best family ever and don't know what to do! So,read the book and find out what would be the right thing for her to accomplish. There is also neat stuff for you to read in this book, like Gilly entering a Kentucky derby, and the worlds uncombed hair. now, like i said just read the book and you could tell your friends about this amazing book.......

The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine Paterson.......2004-11-19
The Great Gilly Hopkins is a G-R-E-A-T book. Gilly is an orphan who is in foster care. She is sent to a woman named Trotter's house and has to put up with a freaky little adopted boy named William Earnest. Gilly is great, all right. A GREAT BIG BULLY. She meets a girl named Agnes, who she thinks is like Rumplestilstkin. She uses her to steal money from a scary little colored man named Mr. Randolph. She steals some from Trotter, too. She recieves a postcard from Courtney, her mother, who is as beatiful as a Princess. She Plans to run away and take the bus to Courtney. I love this book because it has a wonderful surprise ending.
The Great Great Gilly Hopkins.......2001-09-07
She's mean she's nasty and she's coming your way. She's the great Gilly Hopkins a girl who is 11 years old and really wants to live with her mother. But ends up living with wierd Mrs. Trotter and dum William Ernest. Gilly plans to go to her mother by herself but how was she going to do it with Mrs. Trotter and William Ernest in the way? I think you will love this book if you like realistic fiction books. I thought it was really good because of the action.

I have read better.......2001-09-18
I am a big fan of the Forgotten Realms and I have read most of the published novels and found the majority to be worth reading, but this particular novel was a little tiresome.
The story revolves around an accused thief who is given a second chance at life if he will find a certain noble who got lost in Undermountain. Artek The Knife is the thief's name and being boring is his game. Artek is half-orc on his father's side and this is the only interesting thing about him. The other characters fall short in most respects, except for Muragh the talking skull and Guss the Gargoyle. Muragh provides comic relief in the story and Guss shows great bravery. The noble and Beckla the mage are not that fascinating.
I believe if the characters were more developed this would have been a better read, but they were not and this is not.
An excellent addition to the Forgotten Realms saga.......2000-06-14
Mark Anthony has written an exciting chapter in the Forgotten Realms saga. The story of a thief who agrees to find a lost noble in the multi-level dungeon/labyrinth is one full of magic, monsters and mayhem. Once the character thinks he's found a way out of Undermountain, he's faced with a new set of obstacles.
This one will keep diehard readers of fantasy novels and new readers of fantasy novels entertained for hours. Of all the novels in the The Nobels series, this one is the best.
Also recommended is "Crypt of the Shadowking", a novel in The Harpers series, by the same author.
Unable to describe.......2000-04-16
No words for this book. So awesome and addicting, I had to read it in 1 night. it cost me a late day to work the next though. very good book. well written and very exciting
Awesome Action-Packed Adventure!!!!.......1999-06-25
This was one of the best Forgotten Realm books out there! A must-read for anyone interested in monsters, wizards, and heroes. It gives great detail on every character. I suggest every reader out there to pick this one up.
Very interesting.............1999-05-03
Book was well written...Story line flowed together...If you like any of the forgotten realms books, you ought to love this one.

Book Description
Remus -- mysterious sister world to Romulus. A planet where hope surrendered to darkness long ago. A planet whose inhabitants have been without a voice for generations. But that's about to change.
Earth -- home to Starfleet, where the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-E, gathers under the crystal blue skies of an Alaskan day to celebrate the wedding of Will Riker and Deanna Troi. The joy of the day is overshadowed only by the knowledge that this is the last time they will all be together, as soon-to-be Captain Riker and his ship's counselor, Deanna Troi, will soon be departing for their new ship.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the Enterprise crew are suddenly diverted for an unexpected diplomatic mission to the planet Romulus. Longtime enemies of the Federation, the Romulans have expressed their desire to initiate negotiations that will hopefully lead to a long-awaited unity in the galaxy. But upon their arrival on Romulus, the Enterprise crew is faced with a threat that could lead to the destruction of the planet Earth, and Picard comes face to face with a man who may prove to be his most dangerous adversary yet...and a surprisingly personal nemesis.

Children Or Young Adults Only!.......2005-08-20
Thought this book was an adult, paperback adaptation of this Star Trek Nemesis movie. If you aren't an adult, avoid this copy of the book!
Holds interest even if you remember the film in detail.......2005-02-26
There was never a happier time for the officers of Jean-Luc Picard's Enterprise, as Will Riker and Deanna Troi marry with their friends and colleagues surrounding them. Meanwhile, on far-off Romulus, the senate chamber lights with death planted by a saboteur - death that clears the way for a Human reared on Remus to take power there. Shinzon, the "Reman but not Reman" whom the long-enslaved inhabitants of that world claim as their prophesied savior, need Jean-Luc Picard in order to survive. Even though Picard, toasting Riker and Troi at their Alaskan wedding reception, doesn't yet know the much younger man exists.
J.M. Dillard's novelizations of the Star Trek films are always well done, and this book is no exception. It fills in much that the movie skimmed or skipped over entirely, and by so doing holds the reader's interest even if that reader recalls the film in detail. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
GREAT BOOK, LOVED IT!.......2005-01-25
I WOULD RECOMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO LIKES STAR TREK.
IT FALLOWES THE MOVIE, BUT GETS OFF THE SUBJECT SOMETIMES.
THE AUTHOR MAKES IT SOUND LIKE YOUR INSIDE THE CHARACTER, AS SOON
AS I STARTED READING THIS BOOK I DID NOT WANT TO PUT IT DOWN!

Customer Reviews:
I lap up all Food Network books..........2007-08-07
Or I should say I used to. I bought this one without really looking inside because I had had such good experiences in the past with FN books. I haven't made one recipe out of this book. I was also dismayed to find repeat recipes found in the other cookbooks by the same chefs (I already owned)! It was like a compilation of a few recipes from already published cookbooks.
If you want a good FN cookbook...buy the one that the people behind the scenes put together...it's called Food Network Kitchens Cookbook. It's much better than the celebrity chef compilation.
So-So.......2007-06-06
I got this book cus i am some what of a collector of cookbooks, and all I have to say is that it is so so. I own alot of the food netowrks chefs books, and i found that all the recipes that are in this book, are in the books i already own, so if u own Rachael Ray, or Giada, or Tyler, or Bobby, and Paula books I wouldnt buy this, it is nice to see all of them in one, but like i said it is so so.
Wonderful.......2007-02-18
I really enjoy this cookbook between the wonderful recipes & pictures. Had a dinner party last night & made the Corn Casserole. Its a keeper EVERYONE raved & it was soooooooooooo easy. I can't wait to try others.
Fun Recipes.......2007-02-14
This cookbook has very interesting, fun recipes and info about each celebrity chef. If you are a food network fan, I would definitely recommend it.
GREAT PURCHASE FOR GOOD FOOD.......2007-01-09
I BOUGHT 2 OF THESE BOOKS AND GAVE 1 AWAY AS A GIFT. I LOVE IT AND SO DOES THE PERSON I GAVE IT TO. EASY TO USE RECIPES FROM CHEF'S THAT WE JUST LOVE
