Book Description
In her first short story collection, Her Infinite Variety, Pamela Berkman captured the beauty and delicacy of Shakespearean women. Now, in this lovely new work, she turns her eye towards modernity and the women of today. Whether searching for someone to love, stuggling to find a sense of self, or striving to discover their own understanding of religious truth, these women are instantly recognizable and heartbreakingly easy to relate to. In the tradition of Amy Bloom's collection Come to Me, Berkman explores the inner workings of the human heart and spirit in these twelve stories:
Customer Reviews:
Tired of goofy chick lit?.......2003-04-22
This is a wonderful, beautifully written, thoughtful, sexy collection of short stories about young women. I found it a great antidote for all the silly lowest-common-denominator chick lit out there with the pictures of sexy legs on the covers. This is all about women of our generation, but it's told with intelligence, wit, a bit of darkness and a bit of humor. A wonderful collection--buy it!
Good NYC Subway Reading.......2003-02-24
Even though many of Berkman's stories are set in the SF Bay Area, they could just as easily take place in East Village tattoo parlors, cafes in SoHo, or grungy cold-water flats in Alphabet City. And even though this is an odd review, it's my genuine experience: Berkman's tales are a particularly delightful read on the New York City subway. Forget worrying about chemical attacks; just get a copy of this book and enjoy yourself! One can get on at 14th Street and finish a story before hitting Canal. Now that's a New York state of mind!
Daring and Insightful.......2003-02-14
This collection is a wonderful find. Sharply observed and elegantly written, Berkman's stories present the struggles of young urban women to develop social and sexual mores that they can believe in. The struggle is ultimately a hopeful one. Over and over again, in stories that are alternately gritty and graceful, the characters rediscover--or reaffirm--a fragile faith in the world. To renew your faith in contemporary fiction, buy this book.
Fascinating and provocative stories.......2003-02-12
This is one of the most original and daring short-story collections Iýve read in a long time. The stories are sexy and provocative but the characters are very real people, even when they are in extraordinary circumstances. Berkman challenges our assumptions about women and sexuality but does so by telling darn good stories. The characters have both a sense of youthful exploration and precocious maturity and the sleek writing style reminded me a lot of Alice Munro.
A constellation of clever short stories!.......2003-02-03
Ever read a collection of short stories whose female theme (office politics, dating, get-togethers with friends) is mixed with dark and gothic undertones (witchcraft, self-destruction, twisted religious themes)? In The Falling Nun, Pamela Rafael Berkman touches on some rather disturbing subjects in women's quest to find love, success and happiness. As a result, she conveys a profound message in the aforementioned struggles. My favorite stories are "Gold Glitter," "Snakes," Playing Crucifixion," and "Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown." If you're in the bargain for a literary and thought provoking collection of short stories, then I suggest you pick up The Falling Nun.

Book Description
Ra-ab, heir to the Nomarch of the Oryx, grows up in a corrupt Egypt devoted to the worship of Set, the Lord of Fear. When an adult, he joins a group called "the eyes of Horus," dedicated to ending the rule of terror and lifting the shadows of greed, lust, and cruelty from Egypt. Toward this end, he leads his followers into battle to depose the old regime and evil priests. This is one of the most exciting of all of the Joan Grant novels.
Customer Reviews:
A mediocre fantasy at best.......2006-04-23
Joan Grant's historical fantasy novels were based on her personal imaginings, which may have included vague recollections of former lives assuming reincarnation is a fact. Miss Grant apparently believed these mental impressions to be 100% accurate. As such, the books were poorly researched, and presented the cultures of ancient Egypt, pre-Columbian America, and ancient Greece and Rome with an overlay of the mores and ethics of her own middle-class England.
No such period as she describes existed in Ancient Egypt. The primary god was Amen-Ra, the creator of all things. Set was the villain of the Osiris story. Osiris was a fertility god and a relatively minor one at that. He only became important when somebody died. (A search on "Kemetic Orthodoxy" might be helpful for more detail.) If I remember right, Egypt was seriously threatened by civil war only at the end of the reign of Akhenaten, whose obsession with destroying the existing religious system and setting up Aten as the "One God" had more in common with Islamic extremism than it did with any sort of proto-Christianity, although it's constantly mistaken for same. The Egyptians did believe in life after death, with many rituals for ensuring a safe trip to the next world. That reincarnation was also a part of the established religion has not been documented through perusal of the literature available to us currently. Until said literature is discovered, an elaborate, New Age-like Egyptian belief in reincarnation remains a Victorian romantic fantasy.
Save your money. The works of Mary Renault (who also suspected she'd lived previous lifetimes in ancient Greece) are more grounded in reality and better written overall.
Better Than a Vivid Movie-and Real.......2000-11-10
Joan Grant had an amazing knack for incisive writing about her past lives. Many books of this genre are fuzzy, feel-good bromides that leave us doubtful. The authenticity of Grant's experience rings true in every sentence of this work.
It reads like an exciting adventure novel- yet the solidity and internal consistency of her main characters are astounding- and the spiritual gems glistening throughout the narrative are there for anyone to share. The prose is crisp, measured, and not padded and brings the culture and perspective of ancient Egypt directly into the heart and mind of the reader.
I am glad than writer Harold Klemp (Autobiography of a Modern Prophet) recommended this author to me.
She WAS there indeed..........1999-11-25
If you got to this page, please, please DO BUY Joan Grant's "Eyes of Horus". It is a wonderfully written novel (Which is suppossed to be a real life she remembers), it is wonderfully written, and the amount of details of everyday life makes it amazing to read. You will feel you are in old Egipt, seeing everything with your own eyes. The way she writes makes you even understand other ways of thinking than our own, because of what her characters say, the comparisons they make... Believe me! I am an hypercritical person and there is nothing phony in this book! Please buy it, you will not regret it!

The Valley of the Nile has long nourished more than cotton and date palms: its soil has proved fertile for a growing number of authors who cast back through time to explore the delicately nuanced society of the ancient Egyptians. The region also seems a natural crossroads for the archaeological endeavor and the detective impulse: witness Elizabeth Peters's widely read Amelia Peabody series (The Ape Who Guards the Balance, The Deeds of the Disturber, etc.). Peters's spirited Victorian archeologist-sleuth has new competition in Carol Thurston's Kate McKinnon, an extraordinarily talented medical illustrator who loses her heart to Tashat, a 3,300-year-old mummy whose face Kate is painstakingly recreating for a Denver museum: "Tashat's body had been tightly swathed in linen, the outer layers stiffened with gesso and varnished to seal out moisture, then covered with a series of colorful scenes framed by gold bands that Kate thought might represent the landmarks in Tashat's short life, if only she could figure out how to read them."
The growing mystery surrounding the mummy (Why was she tortured before she died? Why is a man's head between her legs? What do the drawings that cover her casket mean? What of her striking resemblance to Nefertiti?) compel Kate to join detective forces with Max Cavanaugh, a radiologist and budding Egyptologist. Thurston's ambitious narrative partners the pair's research, intuition, and wild guesses with a slowly unfolding tale of love, deceit, and political upheaval, courtesy of interspersed sequences from the journal of Senekhtenre, an unorthodox physician from 1350 B.C. His stories of Nefertiti, Akhenaten, Tutankhamen, and Aset--a fascinating and equally outrageous young girl--will reveal the tantalizing keys to the mysteries Kate and Max are intent on solving.
The Eye of Horus contains perhaps more information than is really good for it: Thurston's careful, even obsessive, research in Egyptology and forensic archaeology is evident, but the material occasionally proves too heavy a burden for the plot to carry. Her sense of pacing is often phlegmatic, when her story cries out for a light and rapid touch. But even in its boggy patches, the novel is sure to captivate those with a taste for the ancient, the modern, the mysterious, and the eerily profound. --Kelly Flynn
Book Description
A fabled age of wonder and terror comes to breathtaking life in a uniquely original masterwork of suspense that seamlessly blends the mystery and majesty of an ancient land with the astounding technology of modem-day forensic investigation. The Eye Of Horus
In Egypt in the year 1359 B.C., during the reign of the young Tutankhamen, a girl child is birthed in secret by the beautiful Nefertiti, once queen to the heretic Akhenaten. Fathered by Ramose, who is soon to become high priest of Amen, the girl is destined to be a pawn in the power struggle for the throne, caught in the deadly snare of court-temple intrigue.
Thirty-three centuries later, medical illustrator Kate McKinnon stumbles upon a disturbing mystery from this ancient world. Hired by the Egyptology department of a Denver museum to create displays for an exhibit, she encounters a fascinating enigma: the mummy of a young female, her ribs broken, her hand shattered, and a man's skull between her legs.
With the aid of radiologist Max Cavanaugh, Kate employs the most up-to-the-minute forensic and imaging techniques in hopes of unraveling the millennia-old puzzle. And as remarkable secrets come to light under their expert scrutiny, a parallel story begins to unfold of a young girl born into a nest of vipers -- and her tragic destiny in an age when stone pyramids loomed over the silently shifting sands and godlike pharaohs reigned in unimaginable splendor. As the two stories coincide -- one contemporary, the other as old and inscrutable as the Sphinx -- Kate finds herself on a twisting path laced at every turn with unexpected discoveries and peril, all leading her deep into the darkest shadows of ancient Kemet ... and ever closer to the shocking revelations of a crime so staggering, its horrific power remains undiminished by the relentless passage of time.

Made me cry.......2007-04-10
This book is very dense with information both historical and medical but well worth the effort! The story line from the past does seem so much richer than that of the present but both are nicely woven together. You know that a good outcome can't have happened for those in the past but it still brought tears to my eyes to read the ending. I came to this website to find out where the next book was that is alluded to on the back cover. It appears not to have been written which is a shame. I would have read it!
Captivating and Well Written.......2006-11-27
"Eye of Horus" was to me phenomenal. The author has a virtually flawless plot. Because it is a book about ancient Egyptian dynasties, there is the potential for a lot of mumbo-jumbo, but the author seems to know her egyptology and forensics VERY well and writes it in such a manner that is easy to understand for somebody who knows not a lot about egyptology or forensics. I couln't seem to put it down. I stayed up until 4am reading. The story comes together bit by bit so it doesn't seem like you're reading for ages waiting for the ending to get the one piece that puts the 2 stories together. It's like.... leap frog almost.
Amazing if you are an avid reader.......2006-07-04
Perhaps not a book for the occassional reader but if you tear through books with enthusiasm this could be the book for you. Beautifully written and researched this is my favorite book of all time. A love story without being overly romantic, woven with heartache, and treachory. It's a 2 part story, weaving together past and present. There ARE a lot of medical terms and a lot of names but it's really not necessary to worry about understanding all of them. if you keep reading most of it is explained and the characters become clarified. An amazing read for anyone interested in Egyptian history or study
Lays it on too thick..........2006-02-14
The Eye of Horus is a mystery unraveled from the opposite ends of a spectrum. The narrative jumps back and forth between ancient Egypt and our day and age. In Egypt we are introduced to Aset, a young and lively noblewoman whose love for her physician Tenre knows no bounds. In the present we get to know Kate, a medical illustrator who is baffled by the mysteries surrounding an ancient mummy. Not surprisingly, the mummy is Aset herself. Both stories collide when the mysteries surrounding Aset's death become apparent.
There is no doubt that the author did her research and profoundly knows the subject matter. She pummels us incessantly with facts and long-winded descriptions of ancient Egypt. When narrating the present, she always provides a barrage of facts concerning imaging technology and X-Ray procedures. In other words, Thurston goes overboard with historical and technical details. A leaner and meaner narrative would have been more palatable to the average reader. Despite the cluttered narrative, Thurston succeeds for the most part in holding our interest. The mystery surrounding Aset's death intrigues us and demands an answer.
There is one aspect of this novel that was disturbing. The Egyptian physician Tenre was in his early twenties when he delivers Aset from Nefertiti's womb. A few years later he is hired as her private physician and quickly becomes her tutor and father-figure. A father/daughter relationship emerges and is greatly reinforced throughout the years. Yet when she is seventeen years old they get married! I find it very disconcerting when a father/daughter relationship veers off into the realm of romance and sexuality. It is downright creepy! Tenre was 22 years older than Aset and loved her dearly as a daughter when she was a child. When puberty hits, Tenre suddenly feels attracted to her... Well, this is so much worse than the Woody Allen and Sun Yi fiasco. At least Woody never nurtured Sun Yi as a child. Tenre, on the other hand, literally robbed the cradle. A cradle that contained the girl that was practically his daughter. Disgusting...
Wonderful look into the 18th Dynasty!!.......2004-05-13
I just have to say I LOVE this book!! Aset and Tenre really grew on me as their relationship developed. Especially hearing all of things that happened at/after her death through Max and Kate. The present event were equally entralling. Then add in the accurate geneology and relationships through the 18th Dynasty...I was hooked! Thurston brought in all of the theories and "facts" that I prescribe to. She didn't leave anything out in her investigation and painting the most accurate picture possible.
If you love the 18th, love ancient Egypt...pick this one up! I can't wait for her next novel!

An excellent guide for intuition and knowledge already in the reader.......2005-12-24
I got the paperback edition from a friend of mine for a birthday gift. I'm fanatical about Egypt, and even derive my personal beliefs from the ancient religion. This book provides numerous facts about Egyptian culture and the gods represented on the tablets. What's more, though, is that it seems to be quite accurate. I enjoy horoscopes and Tarot and the like for fun, but I've never taken them seriously (I mean, come on, I'm Capricorn, I'm supposed to be stable, and yet, I've never met someone less stable than I am!). These tablets make me wonder, though. They're extremely insightful. The readings I do for myself that include a stone to represent me are always accurate, and more often than not, I'm represented either by the stone that takes many charicteristics from Capricorn or stones which take charicterstics of the star signs I'm much more in line with. Doing a reading for my boyfriend, I drew out the stone that represented Aries, which he is. It's slightly eerie. But more than anything, the tablets give the reader a way to guide her (or his) intuitions and knowledge that s/he already has. If you concentrate on a question (perhaps 'should I take the promotion and move to Seattle?'), the tablets don't give you any answer--they simply give you interpretations that you must take and apply in the way you believe to be correct. It's reminiscent of a teacher holding a child's hand, "Now, is an apple red?" A guide for bringing light to things, but really, it's all in the reader already.
I would strongly recommend this set to anyone interested in fortune telling methods (like Tarot, numerology, etc) or Egypt. It makes a splendid and thoughtful gift--I would quite possibly call it the best gift anyone has ever given me.
A legitimate Kemetic divination system for our times!.......2001-05-07
I got this book and divination tool with hesitation, expecting it to be another one, maybe an interesting one. I have been involved in and learning the traditions of ancient Egypt, and I can assure you that the author is acquainted with the energies and archetypal patterns that are contained in the tablets. I have been using the system for a while and it's providing me insights and clarity on many matters.
I would recommend that the reader become acquainted with the mysteries and the deities of Ancient Egypt in order to better understand the layers of meanings of the tablets, as the author's guidance, after a while, becomes too vague. His focus is positive thinking, but at times it feels like he's avoiding within the picture aspects that, as readers, we may not want to see or encounter, but that are there and are a part of everyone's life. It's up to the reader, in my belief, to determine what tablets hold 'blockages' and other negative components that every divination tool includes.
The system is awesome and pretty complete, if the practitioner takes time to explore its depths and discover deeper layers of meaning.

Fun,informative, interesting..........2001-03-23
This rune set is great if you love Egypt! Of course there are alot of rune sets but this one is particularly nice. 1. because of the egyptian theme; 2 because of the meditations;3 the information and history they give for each of the runes; 4 Alot of info. on the gods and goddess of ancient Egypt... This is a really good set!
Fun & Informative.......2000-09-20
I was so thrilled when what I thought was a book ended up to be a rune set. The moment I unwrapped the set I noticed they were extremely well made and felt to be well intentioned. The book that is enclosed is very informational. I personally love that at the end of each reading there is a meditation section for each tablet.
Cool Set!.......2000-08-08
I love mystical things (Such as tarot cards) and this combined both my love of that and Egypt. The tiles are much more positive than tarot cards, and a lot more fun to read. ...

Egypt, the land that saw the rise and fall of the most long-lived and enigmatic of the ancient Mediterranean civilizations, offers itself to the readers gaze from on high, the best vantage point from which to experience its grandeur. Egypt is capable of staging spectacles of pure beauty: the boundless Sahara desert, the fertile Nile Valley, the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean and the coral reefs of the Red Sea, the masterpieces of Egyptian antiquity, and the remarkable ingenuity of modern man. Stunning photographs, including a sequence of images taken from NASA satellites, accompanied by rich text, describe the myriad facets of a marvellous, colorful, and surprising land. These astonishing photographs truly illustrate the ancients name for Egypt, the Red and the Black Land : the red of the burning desert expanses contrasted against the black of the dark silt transported by the Nile. The breathtaking images reproduced in this book trace an unusual aerial itinerary across a country of millennial appeal, rendered all the more seductive by the clarity of the light and the dizzying perspectives captured by a master photographer. This extraordinary bird s-eye overview embraces the complexity, the geometry, and the sharp colors of the land of the pharaohs.

"Gourmet raw cuisine"--if that sounds like an oxymoron, you'll be amazed by the creativity of the recipes in this book. Every food is "live" (uncooked) in these vegetarian recipes from Juliano, the raw-food guru of Los Angeles. Juliano believes that fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, beans, and seeds in their rawest and purest form are the most nourishing foods. If your imagination stops at alfalfa sprouts and grated carrots, hold onto your cutting board. Juliano's recipes include Butternut Squash Soup, New Moon Fruit Stew, Thai Green Papaya Salad, Living Buckwheat Pizza Crust, Mango Essene Bread, Mock Salmon Sushi, Raw Spring Rolls, seven varieties of burritos, nine varieties of pizza, and nine unusual smoothies. Desserts? Try EZ Pudding (made with maple syrup, avocados, and carob powder) or Cashew Gelato (cashew butter, maple syrup, and almonds, served frozen). There are also condiments, dressings, and sauces, and plenty of information about preparing raw foods, including how to soak and sprout beans, grains, seeds, and nuts.
It may seem like cheating, but a food dehydrator is permitted to "bake" pizza, cookies, and breads. It blows hot air, but never heats foods hotter than 120°F, which, claims Juliano, "allows all the delicate nutrients that are usually burned out of cooked foods to remain intact." Raw is filled with gorgeous color photos of the foods in all their vibrant colors and a number of photos of the vibrant Juliano (not in the raw). "Before you know it," says Juliano, "you'll be Raw and loving it." --Joan Price

Excellent, life-changing book!.......2007-08-11
I love the recipes in this book, and the photos are not only beautiful, but appetizing! Some recipes, like the one for pumpkin cheese, are just addictive! I ate from this book for weeks and lost a lot of weight, felt energized, and looked great! I wish I lived near one of his restaurants!
A Fun Read, Many Delicious Returns!.......2007-07-01
The book is *beautiful* to look through, and as fun as Miss Piggy's Guide to Life to read. Juliano's humor is much like Frank Oz's! Anyway, this was the first raw cookbook I started making meals with, and it has laid the basics for me to be able to easily comprehend ingredient combos and use many other raw cookbooks. There is an extensive glossary of off the beaten path ingrdients in the back, along with stores and mail order shops for harder to get items. Juliano doesn't hold your hand through everything, and you have to actually pay attention while reading through the recipies to conceptualize portions of some ingredients to select the right amount of produce at market. But hey, it's nice to think after being shown everything so explicitly on cooking t.v. shows, and following some cookbooks where the recipies are itemized like procedures in a nuclear powerplant emergency manual.
Vibrancy.......2007-05-28
I loved the creativity and colorful photos- I have yet to try all the recipes but it is a great RAW entertaining book as the presentation is magnificent....
Wow, Raw, Vibrant and FUN!.......2007-05-23
who know that the old fashioned salad leaf and carrot stick could be revived into something so delicious, sumptuous and wonderful? Juliano makes you drool over the pages and I could not wait to start uncooking! Every single recipe I have used has been magnificent, with such yummy flavours and easy to follow steps. Even though I am not known to enjoy cooking, I love uncooking.
excellent... just excellent !.......2007-03-22
juliano has put a wonderful book together for raw fooders. very well laid out. fun to page through. sure, some of the recipes have long lists of ingredients - but if you're a raw fooder you tend to have nearly all of them on hand, except some of the produce which is for the most part easily attainable (and i live in nashville not california) and much of which can withstand some substitution - especially in things like salads. juliano is inspired and whimsical and from all i've heard is a wonderful guy with a true love for this food. this book is worth owning.
