For those who love Zola -- Excellent!.......2005-08-23
Zola is not for everyone, it can be difficult to get through at times, but this is definately one of the best in the R-M cycle. Incredibly interesting descriptions of people and Paris. I liked this Penguin translation much better than the Oxford edition (very British).

Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Addictive Behaviors, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
Research has demonstrated that social image factors play an important role in the course of adolescent's substance use, that is, smoking and drinking. The concept of social images or prototypes is embedded into a theoretical model called the prototype/willingness model. The present study addresses the relative value of the prototype/willingness model in relation to the theory of planned behavior. To study relations between prototypes and adolescents' willingness and intention to engage in smoking and drinking behavior, cross-sectional data among 2814 adolescents (12-16 years) were gathered. Results show that adolescents describe daily-smoking and weekly-drinking peers generally as slightly well adjusted, slightly rebellious, not really cool, and not really attractive. Positive relations were observed between smoker and drinker prototypes and adolescents' intention and willingness to smoke and drink in the future. Furthermore, regression analyses showed that prototypes of daily-smoking and weekly-drinking peers explained a significant part of the variance in intention and willingness to smoke and drink, and added significantly to the variance explained by the variables of the theory of planned behavior.

Super Reader.......2007-08-01
This is definitely the worst Wild Cards novel. Pretty much completely and utterly Tachyon focused again. Blaise, a psycho who now decides being a conqueror would be a good idea, steals Tachyon's ship Baby and heads for Takis. Yep, he's crazy.
The whole Jumper thing sees Tachyon in the body of a woman, and Blaise can do whatever he likes to such a vulnerable creature. Rape, impregnate, the whole deal. And on Takis, women are definitely second class citizens.
So, some Takisian politics and intrigue, a look at the background of Xenovirus Takis-A, and of Jubal the odd joker who isn't a joker.
Eminently skippable.......2006-05-15
It's odd, that with all of the great SF writers who took part in the Wild Cards series--editor George R.R. Martin, Chris Claremont, Walter Jon Williams, even the late, great Roger Zelazny--the two people who got to write entire books by themselves were the two most irritating writers in the entire series, Victor Milan and Melinda Snodgrass. Both writers are technically accomplished hacks whose characters and themes echo some of the most tired cliches of science fiction and fantasy fan-written stories, aka fanfic.
Snodgrass is probably best known for having been a writer and story editor on Star Trek: The Next Generation. After series creator Gene Roddenberry died, Snodgrass took the opportunity to insult Roddenberry's memory a couple of times in public, apparently because she disagreed with him about certain aspects of the characters. Based on the example of this book, keeping Snodgrass from ruining TNG was probably the second-best thing that Gene Roddenberry ever did.
Snodgrass seems to generally write in the manner of a bad fanfic author whose technical skill conceals, up to a point, her shoddy plotting and view of human interpersonal relations that is second only to John Norman's Gor books for sheer hideousness. Just to give you an idea of how bad her characterization is, let me tell you how the book starts out (not really a spoiler, since it's the basic premise of the book): Dr. Tachyon, an alien who is the central figure of the entire Wild Cards series, has had his mind transferred into the body of a young girl, following which he is savagely and repeatedly raped by his psychopathic grandson Blaise, who then steals Tachyon's living starship and goes off to conquer Tachyon's home planet of Takis. A pregnant Tachyon is going after Blaise to stop him--oh, did I mention that the fetus is telepathic? No, I'm not kidding, that's how the book starts out, and it gets worse as it goes along. You don't even want to know about the relationship between Tachyon and his evil cousin Zabb.
Amazingly, even after this book, Snodgrass was permitted to continue contributing to Wild Cards. Her later stories included a cute centaur who has sex with human women. Somewhere in fanspace, Ensign Mary Sue is beside herself with jealousy. I sure hope that John J. Miller's solo Wild Cards book is better than this.
A Welcome Departure From the Original.......2005-04-26
I am a long-time, HARDCORE fan of this old-but-still-good series. I've loved them since a friend first introduced the series to me waaaaay back in 1988 (OMG...was that really 17 years ago?!).
I was absolutely thrilled to learn that the series was being reissued, so a whole new generation of readers could enjoy it. And now I don't have to risk loaning out my own treasured out of print editions!
I hate to be a party pooper, but this book is actually my favorite of the entire old and new series. Part of the reason I loved this one so much is because it focuses almost entirely on my favorite character, Dr. Tachyon. And I really enjoyed the fact that it's a novel written by a single author (Melinda Snodgrass), rather than the usual anthology format of the rest of the series.
For me, it was really refreshing to be able to follow a single storyline for an extended time, rather than a short story. One of my (very tiny) complaints about the series was usually that my attention span was longer than the stories; they usually ended right when I was getting really into them! I was always eager to spend more time developing and expanding a single character or plotline, so this was a nice break.
Yes, some of the more violent scenes (like Tachyon's unwilling body swap and subsequent rape at the hands of his jumper grandson, Blaise) I could have done without, but honestly, they were no more violent or graphic than other Wild Cards stories in the series. The whole Mark-Meadows-in-Vietnam thing from Wild Cards XII was worse, if you ask me.
Anyway, as one of only two single-author volumes in the series (the other is Wild Cards XII: Turn of the Cards, by Victor Milan), it's a nice change of pace. I highly recommend it, and all of the others in this still-engaging series.
Under rated pleasure!.......2005-03-31
I was almost scared off from reading this by other reviews. However, I did read it and enjoyed it. Finally, we see Takisian society and that other great space-faring society of which Jubal is a member. The character depictions were heartfelt and sincere. Dr. T is treated well this outing compared with the higher-rated previous novel. Everything wraps up nicely and we actually have a happy ending for one of my favorite characters-- Popinjay. This was a nice break from the bleak and depressing storyline that is developing back on Earth. I recommend this book.
This book is an abomination.......2004-11-17
I love the Wild Card series to an embarrassing degree. There's something about clever, wise people having such fun from such ludicrous premises that gets to me. But this book I couldn't finish. Reading it is like being trapped in a room with a bad comedian for hour upon tedious hour.
It's not a good book.

Another masterpiece by a master writer!.......1998-09-27
This is the second in a beautiful series of books, Doulbe Solitaire. It's about twin girls who were seperated as babies and adopted by different families, not knowing about the other's existence. But both of them feel sad, in a way that they don't know how to cure. And then one moves into the other's neighbourhood. Julia Putnam and Catherine Angelos try to get together, both feeling a tug of fate. And in the end, it will bring them together...

An awesome book you'll always remember.......2000-05-07
I was with a friend in a bookstore today and we were commentingon books we remembered reading. This was one that came up. I read itabout 3 years ago and have never forgotten it. I LOVED it soo much that I search all over for the second, but have never been able to find it and it's now out of print! The books about two twin girls who never knew they were twins and don't know their real parents. One twin moves to the same town the other twins in and they meet, but they don't realized that they're twins. It's an awesome book, and I totally suggest it to EVERYONE! I loved it and I'm sure you will too.

Book Description
With Cover & Bake, the editors at Cook's Illustrated set out to revive the venerable casserole. From Turkey Tetrazzini and Chicken Divan to Crab Imperial and Hoppin' John, casserole cooking represents the ingenuity and practicality of the American cook. In Cover & Bake, the editors set out to investigate the old standards and in the process have re-imagined the art of the one-dish meal to meet the demands of today's cook.
Here you will find classic assemble and bake casseroles like Macaroni and Cheese and Creamy Chicken and Rice as well as more inventive dishes like Mediterranean Chicken Bake and Polenta Casserole with Italian Sausage. We've experimented with techniques that allow you to cook everything in just one pot where possible, avoiding the need for hours of preparation and clean up just to get a casserole in the oven. And nearly every recipe can be made ahead allowing busy cooks to serve these wholesome dishes on a busy weeknight.
Looking beyond what most people consider to be a casserole, the editors offer a rather original take on the subject with inventive skillet "casseroles," slow cooker meals that are really worth serving, pot pies with multiple topping options (many of which you can make ahead), oven braises and stews that cook in a low oven for hours so you won't have to stand over a hot stove, and breakfast and brunch dishes that can be assembled the night before.
In addition, this book contains all the relevant tastings and testings conducted in America's Test Kitchen. Learn which casserole dish is our hands-down favorite. Are all storage containers created the same? Want to know which slow cooker has the best combination of features?
In short, Cover & Bake is filled with 200 one-dish meals for everyday cooking. We've made these casseroles a whole lot better tasting while making sure that what everyone loves about casseroles remains - the fact that they are practical one-dish meals that require a minimum of fuss and last minute attention.
Customer Reviews:
Good recipes.......2007-04-26
I have made several recipes from this book and they have been great and easy to follow. this is the first cookbook I own from Cook's Illustrated and I'm now adding one more to my collection.
My Favorite Cookbook.......2007-04-03
This is my favorite cookbook, and I use it often. It not only has wonderful recipes that I use often, but also features little snippets and articles such as which tomato paste is best, how to know if your eggs are fresh, and how to choose a dutch oven.
My favorite recipes are the Macaroni and Cheese, which is a favorite at pot luck dinners, the Beef Stroganoff, Beef and Guiness Stews, 4 cheese pasta with basil and tomatoes, and there are dozens more I haven't attempted yet.
This book is not about your mother's (or maybe just my mother's) casseroles. The ingredients are top notch and the result is fantastic. I've given it as a gift on several occasions and can't recommend it enough.
There is not, as another person mentioned, an abundance of photos, and I do wish there were more, but I'd prefer great recipes and fewer photos over fabulous glossy photos and lackluster recipes, which I've found in plenty of other books!
Hungry for more pictures.......2007-03-08
I am inspired by photos of the finished products in any cookbook. So, this one disappointed with only a handful of photos. I would pay a few $ more for an abundance of delicious looking pictures. Cook's Illustrated is very dependable for excellent recipes and continues to be in this book. They have ironed out the wrinkles and achieve perfection with these recipes.
Great recipes.......2007-02-05
When I look at reader reviews of cookbooks, I want to see names of specific recipes that were outstanding, so here's one I tried last night: page 61, Chicken Casserole with Spring Vegetables and Tarragon Cream Sauce (oh, gosh, I just noticed it says it's for 6-8 people, and my husband and I snarfed down half!) Any other recommendations out there??
SO GOOD I BOUGHT TWO.......2007-01-09
This is a great cookbook for anyone that has to cook for a group or just likes to cook dishes that can be enjoyed for the next few days. It is filled with warm and comforting recipes from a wide range of backrounds. Every recipe I have tried has come out as wonderfully as it was described. As is the case with all of the Best Recipe Classics cook books by the Cooks Illustrated editors this book includes comprehensive descriptions of the history of the recipes as well as the trial and error lessons that the test kitchen discovered in the process of perfecting the recipe. I have enjoyed this book so much that I gave it to a friend for Christmas.

For the busy cook who wants to put a home-baked meal on the table.......2006-02-06
Casseroles are the answer to the busy cook who wants to put a home-baked meal on the table, but most recipes focus on condensed soup and tuna from the can - so try something new with a new concept in casseroles in Complete Idiot's Guide To Cover And Bake Meals, covering everything from Lemongrass Chicken Curry with Linguine, Coconut and Bean Sprouts to Caribbean Braised Ribs with Mango, Pineapple and Rice, or Sole Almandine with Vegetable and Rice Stuffing. No color photos, but despite the lack of canned ingredients in most dishes, the easy instructions don't need them.

Customer Reviews:
great cookbook!!.......2005-09-18
Another great book by Cook's Illustrated! I love their cookbooks, and their magazine. What I like is that they not only give you a tried and true recipe, they give you their test kitchen results on other variations they tried. And give their reasons for either rejecting or choosing a technique, ingredient or utensil.
If you are a cook who likes to know the science behind cooking, you will never be dissapointed by any of their books. I have 3 from them. I rank their books right up there with Joy of cooking and Julia Child for the content and education they offer both the experienced and beginner.
I liked this book so much I gave it to my brother for his birthday and he loved it. (For purely selfish reasons, every time I give him a cookbook he makes a meal from it and invites me for dinner.)
Comfort food at its best.......2005-09-14
I love this book! Delicious one-dish meals, casseroles, slow cooker recipes, etc., without one can of "cream of whatever" soup. The analysis of what they tried along the way to develop the best recipes is interesting too. I only wish the recipes were a little less involved and took less time to execute, but I do appreciate quality over speed.
Great Format!.......2005-08-10
If you love the magazine, "Cook's Illustrated" but don't know how to organize the recipes (photocopy/cut-and-paste onto 4x6" cards? tear out your favorites and keep in a binder? keep all the issues and try to remember which had what?), then this book is for you.
The recipes, the background, the tips -- they're all here in an organized, workable format. Hooray!
