Book Description

A pilgrim meets the ghost of his dead brother deep in the mountains.

A bodyguard struggles to control his craving for the beautiful woman he is sworn to protect.

A former gang leader beats his parents to death when they forbid his relationship with a girl from the ghetto.

These seven stories by Kenji Nakagami (1946-92) reflect the violence and hardship of his own short life. Born in a slum in eastern Japan, he grew up among gamblers, drinkers, day laborers and smugglers. His mother, an illiterate peddler, had six children by two men; his father, five children by four women. No wonder that complex, shifting family relationships became a major theme in his work. But, above all, it was the suicide of his older brother that darkened Nakagami's early years. It was to haunt him all his life.

From the start, Nakagami was the antithesis of the Japanese man of letters. Tall and powerfully built, he turned down the opportunity to become a sumo wrestler. Instead, he found work in a car factory and then as a baggage handler at Tokyo's Haneda Airport. All the while he was producing stories and poems, and in 1976 he made his name by becoming the first writer born after the war to win the prestigious Akutagawa Prize. His rise from factory worker to literary lion is one of the great success stories of modern Japanese literature.

His novels depict the brutalized lives of people from the ghetto in a terse, aggressive prose style that is entirely Nakagami's own. Other autobiographical works analyze his stormy and often violent relationship with his long-suffering wife.

The short stories in this collection--his first book to appear in English--represent his best work in this form. They range in setting from the present day to the Middle Ages, with a varied cast of warriors and hoodlums, dreamers and priests. Here is the dark side of human nature: cruelty, prejudice, deformity, lust. Again and again Nakagami confronts us with the disturbing fact of man's ultimate helplessness before the power of female sexuality. And each story unfolds against the otherworldly landscape of his native Kumano, the wild mountainous region that Nakagami called "the crotch of Japan."

The stories collected here are "The Mountain Ascetic," "The Wind and the Light," "Snakelust," "Makeup," "Crimson Waterfall," "A Tale of a Demon," and "Gravity's Capital."

5 out of 5 stars The Dregs.......2003-05-25

I know it might seem odd to write about the work of another author from the outset when one intends to write about another, but before I begin this review of Nakagami Kenji's short story collection Snakelust I would like to mention something about Murakami Haruki.

After marrying his college sweetheart Yoko, Murakami opened a small jazz bar called the Peter Cat after his beloved pet. Within this establishment Murakami served coffee during the day and served drinks at night while jazz music was pumped so loud through the bar's speakers that one could not hear ones own voice. Murakami liked this because it enabled him to sink into himself. Most of Murakami's acquaintances at this time were jazz musicians, but some literati filtered into the Peter Cat and one of these individuals was Nakagami Kenji.

A big, burly man, at one point in his life he almost became a professional sumo wrestler, of burakumin stock, an outcast class of people who at one point in time handled leatherwork and dead bodies, Nakagami admired the way Murakami through himself into his work and the way he through his way into his reading. Nakagami's writing also had an impact on Murakami himself. In a literary roundtable held in 1985 Murakami informed Nakagami that most of his writing was influenced by American writers such as Vonnegut and Brautigan and besides Nakagami, he did not read Japanese writers. While Murakami later received worldwide renown, Nakagami, who died of liver cancer in 1992, has remained relatively obscure over the years and only two collections of his short works have been released in English. I will now write about one of these collections, Snakelust, which was never released in paperback and is now sadly out of print.

The volume consists of seven stories: The Mountain Ascetic, The Wind and the Light, Snakelust, Makeup, Crimson Waterfall, A Tale of a Demon, and Gravity's Capital. The 1st, 3rd, and 4th stories are firmly based in a modern setting; the 2nd and 7th stories are set in a modern setting but have magical elements, and the 5th and 6th stories are set in the historical past, the former taking place during the fall of the Heian period, and the latter at an undetermined time with supernatural backing. While the stories are quite different than each other they each contain some standard characteristics. Nakagami's protagonists tend to be big men who at one point in their lives studied sumo and judo and who are prone to violence. Throughout the stories the protagonists are constantly beating their girlfriends and wives and on character even kills his parents with an ashtray. However, despite their violent qualities, many of the protagonists raise birds and try to nurture new life. Yet, it might be because of the twisted violence rooted in their beings that their hatchlings are often deformed or blind and although the protagonists desire to raise the birds they are more often than not crushing the eggs or the birds themselves in the palms of their large hands.

Oftentimes set in the wilderness of Kumano, Nakagami's stories are very earthy unlike the oftentimes sterilized works of Murakami Haruki. If you are looking for something a bit different in the realms of Japanese literature and if you can track down a copy of this book in a used book shop, do yourself a favor and read it.

Much more varied and intelligent than the other Nakagami book. Really shocking and moving at the same time.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars excellent historical fantasy.......2004-07-06

It has been three decades since Dylan Matheson, with the help of the fairy Sinann, traveled back in time, hoping to change history and stop Culloden from happening. In time both realizes that fate cannot be changed and Dylan prepares the clan to change so that when times hard times arrive they will survive. When Dylan dies, Ciaran becomes the Laird of Ciorram and Sinann makes her presence known to him. She tells him that his father doesn't want him to go with Bonnie Prince Charlie to fight because the Highlanders will definitely lose.

Captain Radley of the English Dragoons and his daughter are stationed with other English soldiers at Clan Ciorram. At first, Leigh thinks the Highlanders are barbarians but when she comes to know Ciaran, she falls in love with him. When the English retreat to the lowlands, Ciaran makes the decision to fight for the Prince. When the time of battle looms, Leah sneaks out to find Ciaran, which she does with the help of Sinann. They will live or die together depending on her father's decision.

This brilliant historical fiction brings to life the events that preceded Culloden and gives the audience a taste of how the Highlanders felt going into the war. Ciaran is like his father, brave determined, and loyal to the Highlanders and just like his sire, he made his own decisions no matter that they might bring about his death. J. Adrian Lee gives readers a magical yet historically accurate historical fantasy that is tragically haunting.

5 out of 5 stars Still Dead and Still Creepy..........2003-12-02

This anthology is not only far superior to other horror anthologies, it far outstrips it's predecessor, Book of the Dead. Inside it's masterfully painted pages are 19 terrifying tales based on the mythos of George R. Romero. They're divided into 3 sections, Where Were You When the Lights Went Out, Coping With the Dead, and End Games.

Some of the more well known authors that contribute original stories are Poppy Z. Brite, Nancy Collins, and Douglas E. Winter. Even the team of Spector and Skipp contribute a very chilling tale of what love means to those who are no longer alive.

All the stories are memorable and all will leave that creepy taste of wormy flesh somewhere in the back of your throat. I highly recommend this book for horror fans looking for something different, but it is an absolute must have for fans of George R. Romero's brilliant trilogy.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing beats a zombie book and a cold beer!.......2003-10-25

I read The Book of the Dead and this, its sequel, many years ago. For some unknown reason, I'd forgotten how truly excellent they are - I don't know why there were never more in the series. Perhaps because Skipp & Spector appear to have dropped off the face of the planet?

Anyway, Book of the Dead 2: Still Dead is a great read. Its loaded with imaginative and unusual takes on the zombie genre, as well as some retreads of classic gems that work because they are simply well-written. The stories range from uber-cool 'The Old Man and the Dead', about Hemingway dealing with zombies during the Spanish civil war, to 'This Year's Class Picture', which was so sad it choked me up, to 'Abed', which is probably the most disgusting, revolting, nauseating, perverted, and just plain sick story I've ever read. I loved it! :)

Still Dead also features an interesting foreward by Tom Savini, who needs no introduction.

The only downside to this book, and the reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars, is the introduction by Skipp & Spector, who I've never really been a big fan of. The intro is way too self-congratulatory, pseudo-intellectual, and smarmy. Oh well. Can't have everything.

                "You're hurting me," she said.

In his turquoise eyes she saw something she had never seen before, perhaps her doom. The familiar scent of his cologne now seemed toxic, as though his body was exuding a deadly pheromone. His white hair pulled back in a tight pony tail that had once seemed fashionable, now looked greasy and cheap. His hand with the gold and diamond ring came down on the back of her neck with an unfamiliar feeling, like a buckle snapping. His other hand was crushing her throat so she couldn't scream.

Dead Still plunges into the arcane world of identity theft, insurance fraud, sex, and murder. A vicious killer, an unlikely hero, and a country physician are linked by coincidental events that include a near-death dogsled escape from the frozen terrain of northern Maine and a lethal chase through the treacherous caverns of Virgin Gorda, in the British Virgin Islands. In the end, it's anyone's guess who will survive .

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Suspense in spades!.......2007-04-25

It's a funny thing about these do it yourself books published through the so-called "vanity" press publishing houses. I've read a lot of them over the last few years, at least three or four dozen I'd imagine, and the results usually fall into one of two categories. The first, and by far the largest, is the "Ehh" category. These books are all right, generally speaking, but often suffer under a plethora of problems that prohibit the reader from fully enjoying the reading experience. Massive numbers of grammatical errors, severe plot problems, one dimensional characters (or even zero dimensional characters), and unbelievable scenarios poorly executed plague the novels that fall into the "Ehh" category. Many of these books still attain a certain level of enjoyment, however, although some are far beyond any hope of redemption. The second category is more interesting for a number of reasons. The novels that fall into this grouping usually don't have any of the problems mentioned above. In fact, they're often so good that one wonders why a big name publisher hasn't entered the picture. Enter David Wolman's "Dead Still," a suspense novel that crackles with energy. This is the sort of book that keeps me reading vanity press stuff.

"Dead Still" starts off with a brutal murder in the British Virgin Islands. Yay! That's one sure way to grab the reader's attention! Of course, we don't learn much about the how and the why concerning this dastardly deed. That comes later. In the meantime, Wolman whisks the reader away to the cold climes of Highland Lake, Maine in order to introduce us to one Dr. Susan Schumann. Poor Sue. Her life is a mess. She works in a small town filled to the brim with cranky characters and needy hypochondriacs. Then we learn that she left her alcoholic schlub of a husband but couldn't get custody of her troubled teenage son. Bummer. Schumann still maintains a fairly positive attitude, though. For example, she goes above and beyond the call of duty in order to help a teenage girl with a big problem. But for the most part, life isn't getting better for our heroine until a mysterious stranger enters the picture. He rents an apartment from Schumann, and soon the two become interested in each other. The good doctor's bad luck intrudes, unfortunately, when a tragedy cuts this budding relationship short. What happened? I'm not telling you! Read the book!

Here's what I will say: remember that murder I told you about, the one that takes place at the beginning of the book? Yeah, that one. Well, that horrific crime soon impacts Dr. Schumann in ways she could never have imagined. It turns out the murderer isn't just a murderer, but rather an all around career criminal running the perfect scam. Let's just say it involves the mix of identity theft and insurance fraud mentioned on the back cover of the book. Discussing the murderer's machinations in greater depth could give the plot away, so I won't go there. I can tell you that all of this has something to do with that mysterious boarder in Schumann's apartment. It also has something to do with Susan's subsequent adventures, adventures that result in several trips to her remote cabin out in the woods, another trip to the sunny British Virgin Islands, and several encounters that could result in one dead doctor. The lesson learned from this book? It appears that insurance fraud really pays off well. The only problem is that someone has to die in order for the criminal to collect his or her millions. Again, what a bummer.

I pretty much loved everything about "Dead Still". It's a great book. This story has everything a good suspense novel ought to have: a great pace, interesting and well developed characters, an evil villain, good locations in which the story unfolds, and violence. Even better, Wolman wraps up every plot thread at the end of the book, even the ones you'd sort of forgotten about along the way. The author even throws in some guy maimed in an encounter with a bear AND dogsledding for good measure. And just when you thought the book couldn't get any better, there is a significant amount of humor tossed in to ease the tension at a critical point in the plot. I'm sitting here reading this book, noting the myriad of positives marching across each and every page, and I can't understand why a big publisher hasn't picked up "Dead Still" for wider distribution. I suspect lots of people would really get a kick out of this book if they only knew about it. I think even the hardcore suspense aficionados, the readers who are really finicky about what they read, would enjoy Wolman's effort. I know I did.

I think I know why a big publisher hasn't stepped in with a nice, fat contract. It has to do with the length of the story. "Dead Still" runs a lean 203 pages. While that might be acceptable if your name is Cornell Woolrich, it's not good if you're a lesser-known author. Publishers want bigger books to sell to the public. I'm fairly certain they want around four hundred or so pages for a mass market paperback. It's got less to do with the quality of the story and more to do with giving the consumer more bang for his or her buck. A lot of people won't plunk down seven or eight bucks for a story this short. Unless, of course, your name is Cornell Woolrich (or Stephen King, or Clive Cussler, or John Grisham, etc.). David Wolman isn't Cornell Woolrich, but he's a darn good writer capable of producing a cracking good tale that's hard to put down. I'm giving "Dead Still" five stars.

                5 out of 5 stars A well-written, refreshingly different, undeniably compelling thriller.......2006-12-22

You would think that life as a small-town doctor in Maine would be pretty uneventful (unless you're a Stephen King character, of course), but trouble can find you even in the middle of nowhere. It's certainly proving to be a tough winter for Dr. Susan Schumann. On top of all her demanding patients, she's just lost custody of her troubled son and been ordered to pay alimony to her worthless, alcoholic ex-husband. Then the sanctuary of her virtually inaccessible cabin up north is violated by some deranged individual. Things finally start looking up when a mysterious stranger shows up to rent an apartment from her. On top of the much-needed extra income, Gary Paige provides her with a fresh perspective on life and a definite sense of companionability. All too soon, however, Gary disappears, setting in motion a chain of events that will change Susan's world forever.

Dead Still is quite a compelling, taut thriller built around a unique mixture of insurance fraud, identity theft, murder, medicine, and dog-sledding, transporting the reader from the frozen tundra of a harsh Maine winter to the island paradise of the British Virgin Islands and back again. While I can't, in good conscious, give away any more of the plot, I will say that not everyone is who he/she seems to be in this story, and author David Wolman does a great job keeping the reader informed and involved in a story that could prove overly complicated in the hands of a lesser writer. The main characters are drawn in the most revealing of brushstrokes, even as the sense of mystery around "Gary" is revealed slowly - and to great effect. As events progress, the reader isn't quite sure what to believe about the most dramatic of events - until, that is, the mysterious antagonist lays his cards fully on the table and, in the wake of one character's desperate struggle for survival in the remote Maine wilderness, the novel shifts gears and races toward a most satisfying and dramatic conclusion.

Wolman's background and interests enable him to write eloquently on all of the subjects touched upon in the novel, covering the gamut from the medical signs of drowning to the proper setup of a dog sledding team, and he brings the landscapes of the snowbound Maine wilderness as well as the beaches of Virgin Gorda to vivid life with his naturalistic descriptions of each location. It is this overall sense of realism that makes the drama and excitement of the story all the more compelling. With such strong and realized characters granting you access to their suddenly topsy-turvy world, it's all too easy for you to lose yourself completely in this suspenseful thriller.

5 out of 5 stars Great suspense novel!.......2006-12-03

This novel took me longer to read than normal because of the quality of writing. Wolman had me hooked until the very end. About the story, allow me to quote from the back cover:

"Dead Still plunges into the arcane world of identity theft, insurance fraud, sex, and murder. A vicious killer, an unlikely hero, and a country physician are linked by coincidental events that include a near-death dogsled escape from the frozen terrain of northern Maine and a lethal chase through the treacherous caverns of Virgin Gorda, in the British Virgin Islands."

David Wolman is a consummate writer, and you won't be disappointed. His medical knowledge, survival skills and expertise at dog sledding come through clearly to make Dead Still a fascinating, suspenseful mystery, and I quote from pages 136-137 when Susan is left in an unfamiliar wilderness to die:

"She hoped she would live long enough to sort it all out.

"As she reached the shelter of tall cedars, she tried to calm herself. She reminded herself o the most important theme of survival courses she had taken and taught-avoid panic. Logic and reason were to be relied on. Her knowledge of survival skills would pull her through.

"But, in the long run, her will to survive was the key to survival.

"First, she needed shelter and time to think. She needed to concentrate on the task at hand. That would keep her from panicking. Focus. Focus. She guessed it was about four o'clock as the light was already fading, augmented by the storm with its russet clouds racing above. She quickly found a spot with well-packed drift snow. Using a pine bough and her gloved lands, she dug a chest-high hole into the drift. She proceeded to dig a horizontal rectangle at shoulder height, creating blocks as she removed the snow. Then digging upward into the rectangular area, she fashioned a sleep platform out of packed snow above ground level. She extended the entrance. Then she covered the triangular opening with show blocks she had removed. Using her hands, she made a ventilation hole in the top of the cave. She had practiced this rudimentary shelter building many times, and many times on the Iditarod trail she had slept in such a snow cave to escape storms. So far, it was just Survival 101."

Will Susan survive? Will someone come to her rescue? Guess you'll just have to read this novel to learn the answers to these questions and why she was left to die.

David Wolman is the author of Little Boy Lost and Whispers on the Nile. Wolman's poetry was the inspiration for the musical work, The Long Bright. He reviews theater and classical music. He is an educated, talented writer, and I highly recommend this novel.

4 out of 5 stars There is a Movie here waiting to be made...........2006-12-02

David Wolman is a man of many talents: poet, novelist, critic, music historian, playwright, medical writer, and nature lover and dog sledding aficionado are among his categories of interest. And now with the release of this thriller, DEAD STILL, it looks as though he may be adding 'screenplay writer' to his resume!

Wolman knows how to seduce his reader into his tale and uses the technique of seemingly disparate character introductions to slowly and insidiously ferret out the lines of each character that will intertwine inevitably. Divided into short chapters (always a plus for this reader for getting a book started) we meet first an incident in the past that in retrospect is intensely important in the development of the plot - a short description of a murder in the British Virgin Islands that allows some terse philosophy about death, greed, double indemnity and other onerous signs that signal what is ahead.

We meet two people - Mason Wolff, a tortured soul of a painter whose mental stability is in the hands of pills and who has decided to live a life of anonymity - easy prey for the likes of Gary Paige, a sinister bloke who has a scam for identity theft and insurance fraud. Wolff lives in Philadelphia in a ratty section where his acquaintances include a dying man Peter Novello, Doggie, and Sarah. Slowly but surely Wolff is extricated from his poor environment and transferred to an outpost in Maine under the identity of -yes, Gary Paige! We know something is awry but it takes his connection with the town doc Susan to bind it all together. Susan lives alone after being the victim of an abusive alcoholic marriage that produced a son who at teen years has become a sociopath. Susan rents an apartment to 'Gary' and finds him attractive, even posing nude for him to paint.

Everything begins to shatter when Gary disappears and is 'found dead' in the frozen lake. The real Gary Paige (under the pseudonym of yes, Mason Wolff!) enters the little Maine town determined to get the death certificate on Gary. Susan is suspicious, loses her job as the town doc because of small town gossip about her posing for a patient, and takes off to her real love of dog-sledding from her snowy hideaway in the secret parts of the country - a lake where her friend Dave Dawes, his face brutally disfigured by a grizzly bear attack. Her nemesis follows her with his strange girlfriend Kendra and eventually pursues his plan to identity change Susan with Kendra in another scam, one that leaves Susan to die in the snow until she is discovered by her loyal dog Seer in the company of Dave Dawes. How the now wise crew is joined by the non-dead Mason Wolff and pursues Paige and Kendra to the British Virgin Islands ends the tale of intrigue in yet more deaths and terrifying adventures for all concerned.

While the story begs for a bit more character development in the supernumerary cast in order to keep the reader clear as to the plot, Wolman writes with such authority about things medical, things of the wilderness, and tidbits of wise thought such as the following: 'It was supposed to be a nation of laws, not attitudes - a nation of science, not superstition. But all around her seemed to be the seeds of a different kind of America in which diversity was being replaced by compulsory conformity.' and 'Our identities become a house o nameless cards falling into a pit of deceit. For all our security protection, we are the least secure people on earth.' When an author can blend a very exciting fictional novel with informed ideas about medicine, fraud, identity theft and our communal psyche, he most assuredly is on to something worth reading. And DEAD STILL is that something. It is a true page-turner! Grady Harp, December 06

                  5 out of 5 stars Great receipes.......2007-08-16

This cookbook comes the closest to the real recipes that I have tasted, except they love to use oregano and lots of green pepper which should be ignored. Red peppers should be substituted and cumin is the favorite spice of the cubans. Once the recipes are doctored the food is outstanding. My favorites are vaca frita, oxtails, black beans (remember, do not use the oregano or the green pepper), the garbanzo bean dish with chorizo. Also remember that the type of chorizo you use will influence the dish and their are several different kinds. The Colombian type is excellent or I would stick to Goya's brand. The Colorado Bean Soup is awesome, especially if you puree it - though it is labor intensive. Remember that many of these recipes can be cooked in a pressure cooker, which is how many real cuban households make these meat dishes quickly and they come out the most tender. It would have been great if they included that method in this book but you can guesstamate the times. This works particularly well with the oxtails. You must remember also that each cuban family makes the dishes their way, so that is why you have to adjust the ingredients.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Cookbook .......2007-07-20

This is truly a wonderful cookbook. Having never really experienced the Cuban cuisine, I was very excited when the book arrived. My wife and I have made four of the recipes: Sandwich Cubano, Picadillo (Cuban Beef Hash), Tambor de Picadillo (Beef Hash and Mashed Potatoes) and Congri Oriental (Red Beans and Rice) and the results were absolutely incredible.

                  4 out of 5 stars Great Recipes.......2007-07-17

Being of P.Rican descent our cuisine is similar to that of Cuba. I purchased the book a few years ago and loved the recipes. I also purchased another copy recently for my son for Father's Day. If you're familar with cuban food, you'll probably make a few adjustments to some of the recipes. But all in all the recipes are very good. As far as the stories in the book, I do agree with another reviewer. With as much poverty as there is in Cuba, the authors do seem to have a nauseauting effect with all "They Were, and Had." Makes me wonder if these recipes are truly their own or the folks that worked in their home. But if you can get past their "Uppity" stories, I recommend the book.
