Book Description

Patriot Dreams portrays a strong woman in crisis. Amazingly, it reveals a rich and unexpected tapestry of love: love against all odds for her husband who might never return, love for her country, and love for the Marine Corps. It explores the schizophrenic conflict she faced: how to maintain her patriotism in the face of disappointment and seeming betrayal by her own government and the United Nations. It discloses the painful necessity she faced: to conceal her Jewish heritage to protect her husband. And it chronicles the rediscovery and renewal of her faith which sprang from the trials she endured.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST-READ FOR EVERY AMERICAN.......2001-01-25

"Patriot Dreams" is the most gripping true story I have ever read, and I am a voracious reader. From the opening page, you will vicariously enter the inner world of Robin Higgins, and experience the tragic death of a true American hero.

Rich Higgins was a Marine lieutenant-colonel who saw himself as a peacekeeper and a protector of the nation he loved. His duties in Lebanon required him to be unarmed, and he accepted those conditions as part of the job.

Unfortunately, the Hezbollah did not respect his show of good faith. What happened to Rich and his ever-faithful wife, Robin, will give you the deepest understanding of the contemporary Middle East and the ineffectiveness of our government in protecting its citizens in that area.

"Patriot Dreams" is written with an understated passion that sweeps the reader along; I was unable to put the book down until I finished the last word.

Robin Higgins is an extraordinarly powerful writer. Her work combines the best features of a novel with a strong dose of reality therapy. You will be both wiser and better informed as a result of this read.

The author was a student at North Shore High School when I taught there, and I can, without qualification, vouch for her good character and loyalty. When she introduced me to her husband, Rich Higgins in 1982, he was a major, and she was a captain. You would, as I did, recognize that he was a product of the best of our culture--strong but humane, highly intelligent without conceit, loyal without fanaticism.

Rich Higgins will be mourned, but he must never be forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars a new chapter in the history of guts and loyalty.......2001-01-17

Let me be clear: by guts and loyalty, I mean Robin Higgins. I do *not* mean the leaders who, incredibly, abandoned her husband in his captivity.

_Patriot Dreams_ is LTC Robin Higgins' story of the way she kept two oaths that she never imagined would be brought into conflict: her duty to her husband and her oath as an officer. What stands out about the book is the composure with which she writes about the topic, which gives voice to her determined but very mature and dignified efforts to obtain her husband's (an unarmed UN peacekeeper) release from brutal captivity. It's very likely to push the reader's buttons, not by design but by the nature of the topic, but you'll very likely come away with great respect for Robin Higgins. I did.

Worth reading for anyone wishing to pay respect to two fine Colonels of Marines, for starters. It would also appeal to those who enjoy reading about true commitment in marriage. One other group, in my view, should give it a read: those who still maintain that women should be barred from combat military roles. I'm not taking a position on that topic here, but I do encourage this: if you feel that way, then read Robin Higgins' book, and then ask yourself if you'd want to be the one to tell her--and others of her calibre--she wasn't up to combat leadership, or for that matter if we can afford to exclude her brand of guts and loyalty from leadership in battle.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful love story but much, much more........2000-12-30

One of the great privileges of my life was getting to know Rich and Robin Higgins when Rich was attending the National War College in the mid 1980s. Robin tells the story of their life together and the great tragedy of Rich's capture and assassination. What is equally powerful is how well Robin outlines the lessons learned. This book deserves a wide readership by those interested in the future of this country and the challenges we will face world-wide.

4 out of 5 stars insightful, touching, accurate, written from the heart.......1999-10-03

An easy to read book that captures the integrity of a military officer whose last tour of duty was to serve his country as a peacekeeper. He never made it home. The book, written by his wife, details the frustrations, the red tape and the longings of the heart, all of which become intertwined in her efforts to bring him home. Beautifully written.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must read book.......1999-09-28

I remember reading about the murder of Col. Higgens and thinking at the time how awful and what risks the military took when they served in foreign countries. And, not to mention, how unappreciated they are. And, those who served or serve, can't depend on the support of those who sent them if something goes wrong. Patriot Dreams is a must read book. In fact, if the active military of all the services had any sense, they would jump all over Patriot Dreams for the families and make it standard reading; unfortunately, those in charge rarely see the obvious. Military families sacrifice in enormous ways and I often wonder why they choose to do it. And, Colonel Higgens is an example of what happens when a military man leaves for work in the morning and does not return. Soldiers, wives and families understand this but few in the civilian populace do. This is a wonderful book. Colonel Higgens himself is quite the inspiration. Then Lieutenant Higgins served in Vietnam in 1968 with C Company, 1st Battalion, 3d Marines as a rifle platoon platoon leader. This was a hard time in Vietnam and fighting was fierce as this was the year of the infamous TET offensive. Colonel Higgens was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat 'V' for heroism. It probably should have been much higher. I give him the Congressional Medal of Honor. Captain Higgins returned to Vietnam in 1972 as an Infantry Battalion Advisor to the Vietnamese Marine Corps and then as a rifle company commander with B Company, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines. By anyone's standards, Rich Higgens is a hero. Equally as important is the incredible devotion that his wife Robin had to him, both in life and in death. She did as a minimum double duty as a wife and fellow Marine. Wow! Semper Fi! This is a book that tells about it, the bureaucracy, the stupidity of government bureaurcrats, and the feelings of abandonment of good men. Every Vietnam vet can empathize with her. Many who gave their all to the country, to include their families, have experienced the feelings created by the government of having been used up and then tossed aside. Don't miss this reading and if you know someone in the military, get Patriot Dreams to them.

    Book Description

A little over a century ago in Hartford, Connecticut, Colonel Albert A. Pope was hailed as a leading automaker in the United States. That his name is not a household word today is the very essence of his story. Students of American business history will know of Pope, but this work also includes Pope's account of his Civil War service at Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Vicksburg and explores in detail his entrepreneurial ventures.

Pope's company was the world's largest manufacturer of bicycles (under the Columbia label) in the late 1800s. His production methods pointed the way for the building of automobiles through lightweight metals, rubber tires, precision machining, interchangeability of parts, and vertical integration. The founder of the Good Roads Movement, Pope entered automobile manufacturing while steam, electricity, and gasoline power were still vying for supremacy. The story of his failed dream of dominating U.S. automobile production is an engrossing view into America's industrial history.

THE COLONEL'S DREAM resurrects a time when our nation was recovering from one of the bloodiest wars in history and struggling to regain its identity as a unified country. Colonel French, although a former Confederate, has become enlightened and feels obligated to share his reformed view of American society with his old friends and neighbors. Aided by his devoted servant and freed slave, Uncle Peter, the Colonel makes a life for himself and his young son in the town of Clarendon and works toward making it a prosperous place to live for both blacks and whites. Unfortunately, everyone is not on his side and the powers-that-be are only interested in maintaining the status quo. It is the Colonel's valiant efforts to lay the foundation for a progressive community that moves the action in this novel and provides the reader with a certain sense of ethos, humanity, and encouragement to see this novel to its final conclusion.

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

A writer team up on Wonder Woman, and a pretty good one. Ares is not a nice god, or at least is not as far as Wonder Woman is concerned.

He sends some of his godlings to Gotham to take over some
Bat-Villains, and Maxie Zeus gets in the mix as well. After this, we
end up with a Bat Family and Wonder Family team-up, basically.

                  3 out of 5 stars Character Overload.......2007-07-19

I guess this was a bad graphic novel to start out with as my first "introduction to Wonder Woman". The characters that appeared in the novel were a bit to the excess and did more to get in the way of the story than to actually propel it. The only novel that was worse than this one (in over-character-saturation was Paradise Found).

It was okay. I wasn't wowed with it as I expected to be with all these shining reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Wonder Woman "Paradise Lost" By Phil Jimenez.......2006-06-04

                  This collection contains three storylines:
The first one focuses on three renegade gods that are causing chaos in Gotham City by possesing three of its most dangerous villains Scarecrow, Poison Ivy and The Joker. So of course Diana and her sidekicks(Troia, Artemis, Wonder Girl) must team up with Batman and his sidekicks (Huntress, Nightwing, Robin) to stop them.
The second storyline focuses on a civil war in Paradise Island: the amazons are divided in two tribes and have issues and with some lies all the unresolved anger and resentment erupt into a civil war.
The final storyline consists of Lois Lane taging along with Diana to write a "day in the life" type article on Diana. Diana is humanized as we see her through Lois eyes and even though there is some tension between both women they are able to come to understand and respect each other. The main source of the tension is that Diana is the super HOT, kind and all around perfect best friend to Lois husband.
The art and writing by Phil Jimenez if excelent, even if things sometimes get very cluttered on pages. Sometimes there is alot going on and things get very busy, but thats just a minor complaint, overall highly recommended. oh also this book leads into Wonder Woman "Paradise Found". EP

4 out of 5 stars Sensory Overload ala' Perez!.......2004-07-12

I got both volumes of Phil Jimenez's "Wonder Woman" stories on the same day and read them back to back. After that I had to lie down for three days. The work here in "Paradise Lost" and in the second volume, "Paradise Found", is a feast for the eyes. You'll spend days gazing into the details of each panel that you'll literally suffer from sensory overload after that. That wasn't a complain. In fact, I absolutely LOVE Jimenez's art in this book. He's the closest thing to having George Perez draw this book again (and in many ways, Jiminez's art is even better). We live in a time where big-panels and in-your-face, action-oriented splash pages are the norm. In fact, I'm one of those who complain about how expensive comicbooks are and how short a time it takes to read one these days. Not so with Jimenez. His "Wonder Woman" takes *forever* to read. There's just so much to savour in his 12-16 panels-per-page comics.

This first volume contains three storyarcs. The first has the return of Ares' children to Earth - this time taking over the bodies of Poison Ivy, Scarecrow and Joker. The Wonder-Woman-Family and the Bat-Family team up to take them down.

The second story is a civil-war, politically-heavy story that finally ties-up all the long-standing issues from George Perez's previous run on the title. Phil Jimenez successfully balances the "super-heroic" Byrne version of Wonder Woman with the myth/politics-heavy Perez version in these stories. We finally see the resolution to the whole Themyscrican/Bana-Mighdall conflict. (There's also a short insert featuring a more streamlined origin of Donna Troy that served as a kind of Prologue to this arc.)

The third story is the best of the bunch. It features a day in the life of Diana, as chronicled by Lois Lane. Joe Kelly co-writes this tale and brings much-needed "humanity" to our beloved Amazon.

Despite the whole story being rather "continuity-heavy", I'd still recommend this book to a new reader. The beauty and obvious passion of the work is enough to suck anyone in.

5 out of 5 stars All hail George Perez's heir!.......2003-09-01

For too many years since George Perez revitalised her in 1986, Wonder Woman, Princess Diana of the Amazons and heir to the throne of Themyscira, has been treated shabbily, turned into a sex goddess, and denied her uniqueness as a character firmly rooted in Greek mythology. Phil Jimenez tries hard to remedy years of mistreatment and return Wonder Woman to greatness. He largely succeeds, crafting stories that involve the gods and goddesses of ancient Greece within the often underrated context of comic book super heroics. "Paradise Lost" reprints his first seven issues as the writer and artist of the monthly Wonder Woman comic book, and opens with a four-issue story arc that involves the War God, Ares, and his children, Deimos (Terror), Phobos (Fear) and Eris (Strive). Ares' three children have descended upon the earth and taken possession of the bodies of three of Batman's worst enemies, namely the Joker, the Scarecrow and Poison Ivy. The mad gods plan to bring Ares' reign of terror back to earth by raising the Areopagus right in the middle of Gotham City with the help of Maxie Zeus, a small-time criminal purporting to be descended from Zeus himself. Diana intervenes despite Batman's warning for her to stay away from his city, and the supporting casts of both superheroes (Troia, Wonder Girl, Artemis, Nightwing, Robin and the Huntress) soon get into the action. The adventure gets off to a jolly good start with guest appearances by two monsters from Greek mythology, the Chimaera and the last surviving Gorgon, Stheno. After the first story arc, Jimenez crafts a short story that explains the origin of Diana's twin sister, Donna Troy (Troia, named by the Titans of Myth after the city of Troy). Next, trouble hits Paradise Island as Ariadne returns to exact vengeance on the Amazons by manipulating rival factions into starting a devastating civil war. (Note: Ariadne was the daughter of King Minos of Crete, who betrayed her father by helping Theseus to defeat the Minotaur. Theseus later abandoned her on the island of Naxos on his journey back to Athens, and married Antiope, Queen Hippolyta's sister. Ariadne hates the Amazons with a passion for this slight.) The closing story shows us what a day in the life of Diana is like, and introduces a potential love interest in the form of UN humanitarian aid worker, Trevor Barnes. Jimenez excels at handling a large number of characters at the same time but his writing is often uneven. For example, it is difficult to believe that the characters would talk so much in the middle of a battle - in some cases, they make whole speeches about duty and honour and other some such nonsense. However, there is no question that he is a wonderful artist - he started off in the early 1990s imitating George Perez, but has since developed his own similar, yet distinctive, style. Diana and her supporting characters have never looked better. Jimenez's two-year run on the monthly Wonder Woman comic book ended recently, and he will be sorely missed.

Dave told me four years ago he was going to write a book. He was kind enough to share thirty years of acquired knowledge and history with me. I figured it was going to be just another book about some off the walk theories on how to train a bird dog like the other books that I had read on the same subject. Little did I know. Dave's book is a nuts and bolts yet simple approach system on training your bird dog from a pup to a finished dog. It is money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars Dave Walker Training For Excellence.......2006-03-31

This book is a MUST READ for those new to the sport or those like myself that have been involved for almost thirty years. This is a No Nonsense "How To" guide that leaves no Stone Unturned. Dave gives the new and experienced trainer all the tools and places to acquire everything from training aids to veterinarian tips. I finally found a source to get my dogs "Snake-Bite Proofed"! Keep the book Close By, Dave has done all the Research Work and it's all right at the back of the book for fast reference!
I thought I knew just about everything there was to know about training and field trialing until I read Dave's book... What an eye opener! Lucky for me, I got the book in time to apply Dave's methods to my now six month old Brittany. And Don't fret, Dave addresses the training of all Bird Dogs, not just Brittany's. And most important, he teaches the Trainer how to be a Trainer in clear simple language. If you don't have this book, Get It! Best Investment for any Dog owner!!! Thanks Dave!!

                    Book Description

Chelsea Adams has visions. But they have no place in a courtroom.

As a juror for a murder trial, Chelsea must rely only on the evidence. And this
circumstantial evidence is strong—Darren Welk killed his wife.

                    Or did he?

The trial is a nightmare for Chelsea. The other jurors belittle her Christian faith. As testimony unfolds, truth and secrets blur. Chelsea’s visiting niece stumbles into peril surrounding the case, and Chelsea cannot protect her. God sends visions—frightening, vivid. But what do they mean? Even as Chelsea finds out, what can she do? She is helpless, and danger is closing in. . . .

Masterfully crafted, Dread Champion is a novel in which appearances can deceive
and the unknown can transform the meaning of known facts. One man’s guilt or
innocence is just a single link in a chain of hidden evil . . . and God uses the
unlikeliest of people to accomplish his purposes.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to put down.......2006-02-27

Dread Champion is the sequel to Brandilyn Collins' book, Eyes of Elisha. While I enjoyed Eyes of Elisha, the plot didn't hold as many surprises as I would have liked. I'm very glad I kept reading. Dread Champion far exceeded my greatest expectations. The many threads of plot were tied together flawlessly and kept me guessing until the very end.

The heroine of the series is Chelsea Adams; wife, mother, and visionary--literally. Chelsea is a woman who sees visions from God. In Dread Champion, Chelsea is chosen to be on the jury of a well-publicized murder trial. Darren Welk, the "Salad King" of Salinas County, has been charged with the murder of his wife. Chelsea is sure she will be excused from the jury pool. After all, what lawyers in their right minds would pick her to be a part of a jury? Her visions of a young girl's murder in Trent Park had put her in the headlines just a year before. So she is stunned when she is accepted to be the second alternate juror. But, as the title Dread Champion (taken from Jeremiah 20:11) implies, God will accomplish His own purposes and choose to use whomever He will.

As fellow jurors give her the cold shoulder because of their knowledge of her visions; her visiting niece Kerra becomes involved with the son of the defendant; and God gives her a new, terrifying vision; Chelsea fights to pray and trust that God has placed her where He has for a reason.

God's work in each character's life in this story is as unique as the fingerprints He gives us. That, along with a tightly woven storyline, made this a book that was very hard to put down.

                    5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL read!.......2004-04-29

Once again, Brandilyn Collins has the perfect mix of suspense, drama, romance, and spirituality without preaching! I loved the characters, the believable storyline and was sitting on the edge of my seat at the end! Highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a great read! I couldn't put it down! Unspeakable accusations of child molestation against mega-star Steven Shag prompt him to call Bomber Hanson, the world famous attorney in a California seaside town. Bomber begrudgingly takes the case--maintaining that celebrity clients are nothing but trouble.

Bomber's son and investigator, Tod, explores the shocking details of the case against the odd and reclusive Shag, only to dig deeper and encounter other victims and prejudices: The father of the alleged victim who threatens to go public, the estranged friend and sister of Shag and other colorful characters. Shag declares his innocence throughout, despite the heavy charges against him.

More explosive courtroom theatrics make this third Bomber Hanson case a winner that will have all Bomber fans cheering for more.

                              Book Description

College football must establish playoffs where a true national champion emerges so that every school that puts a team on the gridiron has an opportunity to become national champion.

Anyone who has seen his favorite college football team kept out of the big bowl, dropped from the top twenty-five bowl rankings, or passed-over for a post season bowl bid is a natural friend of the court in David Gaines' fantasy lawsuit to quell the BSC and right the wrongs of major college football.

In Paper Champions, Gaines creates the character, Coll Flemming, a Gaines alter-ego, who is a journalist and lawyer who despises journalists and lawyers. Coll argues his case before a federal judge in the Western District of Texas, Austin Division, "Your Honor," he proclaims, "the most obvious problem of the many obvious problems with the Bowl Championship Series is there is no series. There's one game. One game! I can imagine no more clear definition of a monopoly than a system which declares the winner of one game, national champion over one hundred and seventeen football teams."

Paper Champions hits hard at the BCS for controlling who qualifies for that one so-called national championship game for Division 1-A football—even though the NCAA has never crowned a national champion in D-1 A football.

                              1 out of 5 stars Just a transcript.......2007-09-19

This book is nothing more than a transcript of trail in Federal court. A trial lawyer may love it. It doesn't show a lot of work on behalf of the author.

...in the "john", in a restaurant or coffee shop while waiting on an order, riding the bus to work, or in any other situation where it's preferable to read a book in small portions. This is because unlike most books, which are divided into chapters, the formatting for this book was derived from testimony in a fictional trial where many witnesses testify before a Federal court in a civil suit brought about by the protagonist, who serves as his own lawyer, against the entity that makes up the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). The book starts out with a brief introduction about the protagonist and why he decided to bring his lawsuit against the BCS, and then the protagonist begins examining the various witnesses who are involved in Major College Football, including coaches, sports writers, players and others. Because the testimonies are mostly brief, a person can read a few pages and ingest a good point in the book. Personally, I like this format better than the typical chapter form in which you have to read long passages before getting to key points in the story. For folks not accustomed to reading long novels (and are football fans), this is a great book for them.
As for the book itself, I thought it raised some good points about why there should be a playoff in Major College (NCAA Division I) football. However, the "trial" only consisted of the protagonist examining witnesses without cross-examination by the defense (lawyers for the BCS). I believe the book could have been better if both sides of the argument could've been heard so that the reader could objectively make up his mind on the issue.
My only other criticism about the book was its many grammatical and spelling errors. For a journalist who also teaches English at a college in Texas, he could've done a better job at proofreading the final copy for his book. Actually, he didn't proofread the copy at all. According to the epilogue in the book, his son did! As someone who works in the printing business, that just doesn't make any sense. Despite this lack of professionalism, I still enjoyed the book and would recommend it to others.

Great Book! Articulates everything fans really feel about the BSC and the complete failure of no playoffs.

Marion Cunningham's brilliant revision of this classic home cooking reference addresses "good everyday cooking." Cunningham states that "every meal should be a small celebration," and she eases the preparation of those celebrations with clear, straightforward instructions and hints on how to make the most of every meal through beautiful presentation and balanced nutrition. The chapter on microwaved foods is clear and presents recipes that are simple and taste great. Cunningham's work especially shines in the chapters on baking, as might be expected from her work on The Fannie Farmer Baking Book and The Breakfast Book. Your piecrusts will always be crisp and flaky under her tutelage.

This is one of those classic cookbooks that belong in everyone's home. I received my first copy in 1973 and by the look of the stained and marked pages, one will see a well used standard. I have given it to many new couples as everyone needs something to teach the old comfort food basics to gourmet show-off dishes. The raised waffle recipe is a long-time favorite of our family. Yes there are zillions of cook books out there, most with narrow fields, but this is one that should be close at hand for everyday use.

I was rather disappointed with this edition of Fannie Farmer. It is poorly organized. I think it is trying to cover too much territory and ends up not giving enough basics, e.g. there isn't much about turkey except how to roast it. I also dislike the type font.

I formerly had a a second edition and one from about 1980 which I preferred. I'll use this new version until I replace my earlier edition.

While in West Africa, in 1970, I received a paper back copy of the Fannie Farmer Cookbook from a Peace Corp Volunteer. Being away from America I missed pancakes, cornbread, stews and foods my parents would cook. At 21 years of age I was not a very good cook. Although our African housewhole had a cook, I wanted to be able to make pancakes and other dishes. Fannie Farmer became my cookery Bible. From her simple recipes, I was able to make not only pancakes on Sunday, but battered fried shrimp, beef stew and other dishes. The pictures of the different fruits, vegtables, fish and cuts of meat, enabled me to identify them when shopping in the African markets. Over the years, I have given this book to my daughters and friends. When making unfamiliar dishes, I still refer to my Fannie Farmer Cookbook. I have about four or five of them. I bought the Anniversary book for my eldest daughter...Fannie Farmer Can Teach You How To Cook:-))

Each recipe I've tried from this cookbook has been clearly-written and resulted in a successful dish. I'm very impressed with the updating that Marion Cunningham undertook, all while aiming to preserve the original flavors of the recipes. An excellent resource, which I'm tending to prefer over the copy of Joy of Cooking that I received as a wedding gift a dozen years ago.
