Book Description

The stories in this acclaimed debut all take place in the state of Maine—which quickly comes to stand for the state we’re all in when we face the moments that change our lives forever. Two roughneck hockey players are kicked off the team and forced to join the drama club. A young bartender at a party of coastal aristocrats has to deal with the surreal request to put a rich old coot out of his misery. Can a father defend his family if the diver helping to free the tangled propeller of their boat turns out to be a real threat?

With humor, a piercing eye, and a sense that danger often lies just around the corner, Robinson gives us a variety of vivid characters, wealthy and poor, delinquent and romantic, while illuminating the mythic, universal implications of so-called ordinary life. These stories are at once classic and modern; taken together, they bring the good news that an important, compassionate new voice in American fiction has arrived.

5 out of 5 stars very few adverbs here.......2003-04-04

I could write a really long review with a lot of adverbs and literary terms, but hey, those get old. That's what I liked about "Officer Friendly"--nothing excessive, nothing boring. He writes high-quality short stories one can easily read within an eight hour book store shift. I also liked his use of the word "varsity." Watch out for that. Read the book.

5 out of 5 stars Where the hell did this come from?.......2003-04-01

First of all, this is clearly the work of an emerging American Master. Show me a short story published in the last five years that can hold up to Puckheads, and I'll give you a wet willy! Where in the Hayseus did this guy come from? None of these stories were ever published before this book came out? This simply astonishes me. the OilCan will go down as saying that this is the greatest book about Maine that ever was published. This includes this year's pullitzer, sorry Russo, but have you read this guy? Someone should ask Jason Fulford if he thought this Robinson would write a book twice as good as Delillo? the OilCan would rather have this hardback than HBO.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Step on My Blue Shoes.......2003-01-24

I concur wholeheartedly with the previous reviewer. Though all connected by an ever present, and never static, sense of place, each of Robinson's stories stand as individually gripping flashes of storytelling brilliance. This is my favorite kind of short story collection. You know, the kind where after each story, you feel compelled to stop and enjoy the sense of being pleasantly adrift in the momentum of the telling, released at the end to coast and glide through unnameable emotions, delicate and poignant. As much as they are tied together in Point Allison and its surrounding areas, Robinson's characters also share residency in a wonderfully infectious sense of longing and reflection and unease. This reader's current favorites are "The Edge of the Forest..." and "Cuxabexis, Cuxabexis". Ah Cuxabexis!
Robinson's gift for seemingly effortless natural puppetry with his characters (with place and location always acting as a character of the flesh) makes the collection seem at times like a wonderfully non-linear novel. I look forward to future offerings from this splendid new voice in fiction. This is only the beginning. Clearly Robinson comes from a gifted and talented family.

5 out of 5 stars The finest debut collection of the twenty-first century.......2003-01-23

Flown past Darrin, and arguably passed Doug Flutie as the most talented Natickian of all time. This man is a biblio-superstar, giving us beautiful glimpses into ourselves through the Vacation State. If the people who give awards for debut fiction really read books, here you go -- Brilliant

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful voice from a rising young author.......2003-01-10

Lewis Robinson is the only writer I know who can literally make me hold my breath while reading his stories. His characters speak in a voice so real I'd swear they could only be from Maine (even though I'm just the kind of outsider those characters think so little of).

Robinson also has complete control of his pacing. His stories build methodically, relentlessly, and drove everything else from my mind until I finished each one. I remembered, and enjoyed, each story more than most novels I've read.

4 out of 5 stars "You name us cowards, orc pig..........2004-09-09

...when even a kobold knows that a bionoid never withdraws from a fight of his own accord."

Radiant Dragon is the fourth book in the Cloakmaster Cycle series, which consists of six (6) books in total. Picking up from where the Maelstrom's Eye left off, the book continues to shed light on Teldin Moore and his ongoing quest to find out more about the magical cloak he carries a.k.a. "The Cloak of the First Pilot" and eventually be free of it.
Teldin continues to change both physically and mentally; the mustache is gone, he is more cynical etc
Ability-wise, he is maturing, becoming more and more experienced and able as a fighter as well as in learning the secrets of the cloak and thus better able at controlling and handling its immense power. He is now able to see through the Spelljammer's eyes and polymorph into a Radiant Dragon that can tow ships to safety.
The book also provides more information on the Probe's rescuing of Teldin from the pirates off of Krynn, and the Reigar race to which the fallen she-captain from Beyond the Moons belonged. In addition, on page 86 we learn that Estriss is LN in gaming terms: "Teldin nodded, appreciating the illithid's evenhandedness. This was more like the Estriss he thought he knew: a being who possessed a strong moral code and a philosophical nature."

The plot as a whole is excellent! The book is so incredibly well written that the reader feels that they have been transported to another plane of existence and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense. Moreover, Elaine Cunningham does a great job of presenting the distinct culture and civilization of the space faring peoples, especially the elves, the bionoids, and the dracons. She has done a great deal of research in order to provide such an accurate and lucid description of these people.
Arcane, Beholders, Elves, Drow, Illithids, Orcs, Scro, space battles, intrigue, betrayal, and swordfights are all about.
In addition, there are several new and interesting races/creatures introduced, such as the Radiant Dragons, the Bionoids, the Dracons, the Lakshu, the terrible Witchlight Marauders, and the Insectares, that really do spice things up.
Finally, it is truly wonderful to be provided with so much more information regarding the Spelljamming world.

On the negative side, there is this ongoing "return from the land of the dead" theme. First, there's Gomja who comes back in the previous book, now it's Estriss' turn; the dead should stay dead, unless of course powerful magic is involved such as Raise Dead or Resurrection spells-in both cases, however, neither applies. What's next? Are we expected to see Aelfred back in The Broken Sphere, and Sylvie returning in the sixth and last book of the series??? Moreover, the excuse for the mind flayer's survival found on page 67 states that "Illithids require less air than humans, and I survived in the void long enough to be rescued by this group from Falx." Hmmm...

Secondly, Teldin gets "charmed," yet AGAIN, (!!!) this time by "Raven"/Pearl and he remains so for most of the book.

Thirdly, ENOUGH with the mole/spy thing, and ENOUGH with the "I trusted you and you betrayed me" thing! In short, all this repetition is becoming very tiring!!!

Fourthly, Teldin must have a Wisdom score of less than 3 and be a complete moron if he got on a strange and foreign mystery ship that he knew nothing about, especially when he is told that ONLY elves are supposed to fly it, and at the same time two dracons, who he barely knows, are claiming it as their own. Not to mention that even if elves did run the ship, his common sense should remind him that based on his previous and quite unpleasant experience with spelljamming elves he should flee on first sight, rather than go on board one of their vessels. Hmmm...

Finally, the deaths of both Grimnosh and Ubiznik took place as if both were mere novices, first level characters. A more dramatic set of duels could have been used.

Nevertheless, Elaine Cunningham does a FANTASTIC job of conveying the sheer evil and horror of the Witchlight Marauders especially after reading: "Once the supply of elven flesh is depleted, the creature and its inevitable offspring will turn on each other."

In conclusion, Elaine Cunningham establishes a GREAT cliffhanger for The Broken Sphere, the next book in the series.

4 out of 5 stars The Radiant Dragon.......2003-07-23

Compared to any of the other books situated in the Dungeons and Dragons universes, I have enjoyed the Spelljammer stories quite thoroughly. I recommend this book highly to anyone that likes Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, Darksun, Greyhawk, or Planescape.

This second book of the Skydark Trilogy is absolutely terrific! I just finished it and can't wait to start the third book. Great stuff! Way to go, Mr. Axler!

3 out of 5 stars LOTS OF ACTION WITH LITTLE SUBSTANCE!.......2001-06-09

This 2nd in the skydark chronicles was definately a lot different than the 1st installment. It was mainly a filler for the conclusion it seems, since it was one battle leading into yet another battle. There did not seem to be a storyline in this one as in the last one. Now don't get me wrong - the action is fast and furious,(and extremely brutal), and I love all that savagery that has made deathlands a huge hit, but you have to have interesting story development and character interaction to make it whole and complete hit. This is what has been lacking in the storylines since the premature demise of the one and only original writer who launched this incredible journey. The writers now are extremely talented in trying to imitate and clone if you will, Ryan Cawdor and company - and some even hit the mark and take it to the next level as it was needed at the time. Now Judas Strike is a fun read and full of excitement and was never dull for me but it just lacked that great storytelling that SAVAGE ARMADA had, not just filler for the 3rd. I also do not understand the title either - SKYDARK CHRONICLES sounds like something that is going to be told right after skydark, or something discovered, but this storyline to me has not revealed anything of that nature!? Perhaps in the 3rd installment SHADOW FORTRESS, everything will be revealed and the great story mixed with action and character development will continue. One can only hope.

Commander's Palace is an American restaurant treasure. For many years, patrons of the beloved New Orleans institution have been urging the Brennan family, its proprietors, to publish the restaurant's recipes. Commander's Kitchen, written by co-owner Ella Brennan's daughter, Ti Adelaide Martin, and Chef Jamie Shannon, realizes that wish, presenting more than 150 accessible recipes for the restaurant's acclaimed Creole dishes. These reflect a mix of French, Spanish, African, Arcadian, and Native American cooking traditions. The book also provides a glimpse of the history, lore, and daily backstage to-and-fro that have made the century-old restaurant a required dining destination.

"We like to push things to the edge," says Shannon of Commander's vibrant cooking, and in chapters that treat drinks through desserts, the book proves his point. Dishes like Shrimp Tasso with Five-Pepper Jelly, Pan-Crusted Sirloin Steak with Cayenne Butter, and Braised Lamb Shank with Merlot Mushroom Sauce are typical of the heady offerings, fare both earthy and sophisticated. Also presented are recipes for many of Commander's famed brunch dishes, the classic creamed-spinach- and artichoke-garnished Eggs Sardou among them; "The Chef's Table," a chapter of "show-off" dishes served at the restaurant's renowned in-the-kitchen table; and a selection of sweets, including Chocolate Molten Soufflé and the Creole sine qua non dessert, Bread Pudding Soufflé. Illustrated with color photos and containing technique tips throughout (readers learn, for example, the difference between sautéing and panéing), the book is an exuberant portrait of a remarkable American restaurant and its unique cuisine. --Arthur Boehm

It consistently receives awards from magazines such as Food & Wine, Wine Spectator, and Southern Living. A trip to New Orleans just isn't complete without a meal at Commander's Palace.

Lavishly illustrated with color and black-and-white photographs that beautifully capture the lively Commander's Palace spirit, Commander's Kitchen lets the good times, and the exceptional dining, roll.

If you want to remember your meals at Commander's and perhaps try one or two of the dishes on a slow weekend, you will want this on your shelf. At the same time, it will be the occasional book, not one to reach for time and again.

5 out of 5 stars Great compliment to a great restaurant!.......2004-03-27

This is an excellent compliment to one of the best restaurants. Ilove to cook & eat!! Most restaurant cookbooks have cookbokks which its hard to duplicate their meals. Usually they have recipes so complicated ( require kitchen appliances the average person doesn't have or ingredients impossible to find. Nothing is further than the truth with this book. It has easy to follow recipes, which can be cooked with basic cookware. The dishes come out fantastic. If you love creole food, but can't get to New Orleans regularly-- BUY THIS BOOK. When my wife and I recently visited the Commander's Palace restaurant and sat at the Chef's Table (located in the kitchen where you are pampered by the staff), current Executive Chef Tory McPhail wrote "Eating great...New Orleans style!" on a menu he signed as a memento of our visit. Not only was he right about the food we had at Commander's Palace that evening, but he also provides a short and to the point description for this cookbook.

This book is a must for those that "live to eat" (as opposed to those that "eat to live") and truly enjoy the New Orleans and Creole food styles. The recipes we've tried so far have turned out wonderfully (the recipe for the Chocolate Molten Souflee alone is almost worth the price of the book) and, thus far, have been easy to follow. The narratives provided by the authors about both the food and the restaurant itself are a great addition to the great recipes.

I would recommend this book, and the restaurant, to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Learn about Creole and Cajun cuisine..........2002-03-22

Having spent 4 years of my life in Texas I was introduced to the wonders of Creole and Cajun cuisine. Generally, Creole developed in the city of New Orleans using local produce but influenced by the multicultural nature of the city. Cajun (or Acadian) cooking is food from the country.

I am partial to the simplicity of one-pot cooking offered by Cajun cooking. These are wonderful hearty and spicy meals (gumbo, red beans & rice, etoufee, jambalya) that I often cook to serve large groups of people. In fact, Chef Jamie includes many of these recipes in the "crew" section of the cookbook since he used them for staff meals.

5 out of 5 stars Creole Class Act.......2001-12-28

As a longtime fan of Commander's Palace (and creole and cajun cuisine in general), I found the book as much fun to read as the dishes were to prepare. The beautifully presented recipes and well written preparation tips were made all the better by the inclusion of tidbits of New Orleans and Brennan family history. This book is a must have for both veteran and novice cooks interested in preparing great Louisiana style food.

Every recipe that we have tried from this book has been a hands down home run with our friends and family. The recipes are scaled for truly generous portions. For Christmas Eve dinner we prepared the Venison Stew and the Jalepeno Corn Bread for family in the upper midwest. They liked the meal so much that we left them the recipe book and I have just ordered another for myself!

                  Book Description

amie's Kitchen-the television show-began as an experiment and turned into a phenomenon. It started when Jamie took in 15 unemployed, enthusiastic kids, trained them to be chefs, and helped them open a restaurant, Fifteen, that has become the hottest dining spot in London. When England's Channel 4 launched a tie-in series, more than four million people tuned in. The show premiers this fall in the U.S. Jamie's Kitchen-the book-is laid out as a cooking course and will inspire readers of all levels. Some of the cooking techniques included are making salads, cooking without heat, poaching and boiling, steaming, stewing and braising, roasting, grilling, and baking. In the process, Jamie shares one-of-a-kind, delicious recipes, such as prosciutto and pecorino, citrus-seared tuna with crispy noodles, herbs, and chili; smoked haddock risotto; and baked chocolate pudding. Jamie includes tips on how to take recipes in new directions and how to be an inspired grocery shopper-spotting what's good, what's in season, and what's a good value. Most important, Jamie encourages budding cooks to have confidence and a sense of independence, and to be master of the kitchen!

                  5 out of 5 stars Jamie rocks!!.......2006-12-15

I love Jamie's books! I love all the pictures, the great simple recipes, and insight into Jamie's world.

This book was written during the time when he started training young unemployed kids to become chefs. The chapters include some great unusual salads, cooking without heat, poaching, cooking in pouches, stewing, frying, roasting, grilling, and baking.

There is only one recipe per page, and include a beautiful picture of the prepared product. In between the recipes there are tons of pictures of Jamie, for all the fans out there.:)

These books are definitely a writing from the heart.

5 out of 5 stars Jamie Oliver Knows What He's Talking About!.......2006-09-09

I now have all of Jamie Oliver's books and DVDs. I am eagerly awaiting his book on Italy to be released. B. Marold says it best, so anything I say will be redundant. What I like (love really) about his cookbooks, including this one, is that all of the recipes are cook-able. The meat, fish, salad, and dessert recipes are simple, but incredibly tasty. I own numerous cookbooks, but few are as easy to manouver as Jame Oliver's. The photographs are wonderful and he is adorable. Perhaps he makes it look too easy, but it is once you read the recipe and get down to business in your kitchen. I love this cookbook. It has everything you need to cook and serve a delicious and healthy meal. I would also recommend both his DVDs. His energy is infectious. If you love London (and England) as I do, you get colorful glimpses of restaurants and markets in each episode. His friends are deightful. Especially Gennaro his Italian 'father' and mentor.

I wish I had recorded all of his earlier programs (The Naked Chef) when they were on the Food Network. These tapes are not available now. He deserves all of the success he has garnered for himself. Go out and buy this book and all his other books. And don't forget the DVDs.

Colourful photography of JO himself, family, friends, locations, techniques and recipes throughout and interspersed with useful reference sections eg:-

As above, typical JO notes also head up each recipe e.g.:-

                  Chips
`I'm putting `chips' in the book because if they're cooked properly they're one of the tastiest things in the world. That crunch and fluffy softness inside is absolutely irresistible- especially if they're someone else's!
A good chip requires control and vigilance when cooking. Get yourself a nice spud - Maris Piper, Desirée and King Edwards are all good......................'

Barolo Poached Fillet Steak with Celeriac Purée
`I didn't try poached meat until a couple of years ago and to be honest the idea didn't appeal to me'. A lot of chefs implied that cooking meat in a good red wine was a waste but how wrong they were. As well as 'Barolo', this dish works with many other red wines especially nice spicy ones like 'Rioja' or 'Shiraz'. What I'm trying to say is that if you use rubbish wine in cooking it will come back to haunt you in the tasting.'

                  Favourite recipes:-
                  The proper French side salad

`The design and photography are clear and luscious and the recipes are the kind you want to try and really can make at home.'

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures but beware of some recipes.......2006-04-17

I received this book as a Christmas gift and was excited about getting it home and trying out the recipes. Some of the recipes turned out fabulous but some didn't as the measurements were just plain wrong. I even tried a couple of the recipes twice and even bought new kitchen scales only to have it fail every time. I think people think Jamie's lack of precise measurements are part of his charm and even liberating but unfortunately cooking doesn't always allow this much room for error. So Jamie, while you have the priveledge of being careless with your measurements and able to try recipes until you master them the rest of us poor saps that bought your book have to keep ruining dinner. I guess you can figure out that you should not reach for this book if you want to try something new for those dinner guests coming over.

Dont think twice, if you are starting a cookbook collection or is just searching for inspiration - Jamie's cookboks are for you... bought it for my wife...couldn't stop reading it and trying it out....

                    Book Description

Few foods rival the feel-good factor of soup, whether a hearty minestrone on a chilly evening, a cooling gazpacho in the heat of summer, or the comforting tomato soup of childhood memory. This rich collection brings together 100 soup recipes from some of Britain's leading chefs and food writers. From Jamie Oliver's Chickpea, Leak and Parmesan Soup, to Rick Stein's Classic Fish Soup with Rouille and Croutons, here are recipes for every mood and meal. And as every culture embraces soup of some kind, the influences at work here are wonderfully varied—Ken Hom's Tomato Ginger Soup, Terence Conran's Borscht, Nobu's Seafood Miso with Chorizo, and Sam and Sam Clark's Chestnut and Chorizo Soup, to name but a few. Soup is surely the ultimate seasonal food, and, reflecting this, the book is organized by time of year, so that ingredients are easy to find and at their full-flavored best.
