Eloise is on a fervent retreat from mankind--greedy, cruel, and worthless species that it is. She would, however, very much like a man. "On a scale of human suffering," Lucy Ellmann asserts, her heroine's "celibacy was of little account. But in an ideal world it would be recognized as the tragedy it was. This, in a woman who from the age of five suspected she wanted more sex than she would ever get." Alas, Eloise's temporary crushes on her mover, a gardener (not even her own), and the neighbor's architect have resulted only in disappointment and a criminal waste of lipstick. Her real obsession remains George, an American she had an affair with on a New England holiday six years earlier. But after she returned to England, the relationship eventually fizzled and she is now condemned to a life of misanthropy and felines. She is also on a furious letter-writing and list-making streak. In one lengthy roster she assesses social (i.e., "damaging") encounters according to the recovery time they require. In another, she explains "HOW EVERYTHING WRONG WITH THE WORLD IS MEN'S FAULT," including whistling ("Men are forever announcing their presence with this territorial tunelessness") and male nipples ("Borrowed jewelry for a chest that is too flat. They even stuck nipples on their medieval armour! Ridiculous. Insane.").
Unbeknownst to Eloise, her long-lost lover is actually in England, on a creative-writing sinecure that is only making his own writing--an ill-fated script and an ice-hockey-fixated epic--worse, not to mention turning him Anglophobic. As far as George is concerned, the British are video-crazed, sex-avoiding, and deeply narcissistic. For one thing, "most of Benjamin Britten's (incredible) reputation here's due to his name being BRITTEN." When these star-crossed lovers finally meet again in Connemara--along with a giant-vegetable-growing burglar and letter bomber; a man whose wife drowned while she was rescuing their pet ("It wasn't that their dog wasn't worth saving," he thinks, "a gentle fellow who never barked"); and various other misfits including three old ladies on a shoplifting spree--the results are spectacular. (Think Deep Impact, but on a smaller scale.) As Ellmann's third novel careens from the deadly serious (the Holocaust) to the deeply absurd (mangoes are better than men because they don't "lord it over everybody at committee meetings"), it may well exasperate some readers. Others, however, will be charmed by this fruitful, extreme concoction. --Kerry Fried
Book Description
Eloise is the sad, mad, and hermetic heroine at the center of Lucy Ellmann's hilarious new novel. A middle-aged cellist who hides herself away in a tiny British cottage, she blames the world for its lack of love, and similarly despises it for its anger. It is not until her beloved cello is stolen--and her former lover, an American poet named George, returns--that she is finally drawn out from her shell. Man or Mango? offers a witty, original take on the age-old question: Is love worth the hassle?

Dark and Twisted Humor.......2004-04-30
Man or Mango is a twisted little book, full of dark and twisted humor--it's certainly not for everyone, but if you enjoy a bit of black comedy every now and then, you are sure to enjoy this terrific novel. The novel mainly concerns Eloise--a misanthropic recluse given to hilarious rants--and her former lover George, who is just ever so slightly more social than Eloise. The two are former lovers, haven't seen each other in years, and they each live in their separate worlds trying to avoid misery that company brings. Sounds miserable, but it's truly funny. As I said before, not for the faint of heart, but if you can take it, you'll love it.
Is it me?.......2003-12-30
I don't know who writes the critic blurbs that appear on book covers like this one, but I think someone must be having me on about this book.
'Quirky, striking .. successfully portrays her the tortured psychology of modern love' says the Spectator. 'Funny, original and altogether excellent' according to the Literary Review. 'An anarchic lament of such scope and intensity that it has an almost vertiginous quality to it', the reviewer in the Independent says.
I might be living in a parallel universe, or feeling unusually curmudgeonly, or overreacting to all that Christmas bonhomie ... but I resented every moment I wasted on this. I only kept reading to see if it got better - and because I could not believe there was not more after all the impressive reviews. Even more confounding, this was was nominated for Britain's prestigious Orange Prize for Fiction.
There's no doubt that Ellman can write: the interesting and sometimes bizarre lists presented throughout are clever and well-constructed; there are some snatches of well written poetry; and promise in some of the characters. Unfortunately, the rest of it is puerile, pretentious and irritating.
Oh, and a warning: there is gratuitous coarse language which to my mind adds nothing to what passes for the narrative.
isn't she a bit like you and me?.......2003-09-16
Eloise is a depressed character that acts upon the whims that most people feel at some point or another in their lives- leave society and just give up on love. Her redemption and the story of her hermitude make for an interesting read.
A Thinker.......2001-01-12
Man or Mango was one of those books that makes you think. You have to think to keep up with the story. You have to think to remember what was happening to the characters last. And, you have to think to figure out the point at the end. An interesting tale of a sad woman and the turns in life that bring her to an interesting new place.
An interesting read.......2000-02-19
This is a strange, quirky book by an incredibly talented author. The characters are wonderful, the most alive and unpredictable ones I've read in a long time. The structure of the book isn't traditional or intentionally satisfying, which is refreshing and frustrating at the same time. In all, though, it's quite an experience if just for the way she can turn a sentence.

Book Description
A photographic celebration of the spectacular drama of exotic marine creatures' lives and the otherworldly beauty of the deep-sea ecosystems that shelter them.
Written and photographed by Emmy award-winning couple Michele and Howard Hall, Secrets of the Ocean Realm is more than just a collection of stunning photographs: it is a revelation of the sea creatures' complex and mysterious cycles and patterns of behavior. The reader is presented with striking images of all manner of marine life--sharks, opalescent squid, molting lobsters, dolphins, giant whales--engaged in the vital activities of mating, threat displays, hunting and feeding.
Based on a five-part series of public television specials, the remarkable photographs of Secrets of the Ocean Realm are complemented with fascinating and engaging stories that take the reader behind the scenes and reveal the state-of-the-art equipment and techniques used to capture these exquisite scenes of underwater life.
Customer Reviews:
10 stars for this book.......2004-08-16
This is one of the best books I have ever read about the underwater world. Incredibly beautiful underwater photography of high quality. The photos do not only depict animals swimming around but, for example, sarcastic fringehead males in a showy territorial "fight," close up.
I also like the authors' sensible view about animals and diving in the ocean. No show-off accounts of near-shark-escapes but an honest experience, mostly good but sometimes scary, of working under water. The authors recount some extraordinary events, such as a ride on a manta after freeing him from entangling fishing nets, or unexpectedly finding themselves surrounded by a school of fish that is being slaughtered by marlins.
With this book we get a wonderful view into the ocean world but also a fascinating account of what it is like spending many hours a day waiting, scouting, decompressing, refilling tanks and back to waiting so one can capture a never seen one-minute event on film that made it worth all the work.
A poetic underwater journey!.......2000-08-30
Stare at the beautiful underwater photographs. Sitback, relax and gently discover the Ocean Realm with the still images of Howard Hall and his wife Michele, images that, as Peter Benchley (Jaws, The Deep) writes in the foreword, are among the finest in the world. Dive. Wander through the Kelp forests of the northern Pacific. Get a close-up of sharks and squids in magic detail. Enjoy the vivid colors of the reef and watch lobsters and sea turtles, dolphins and whales in an exciting photographic journey! Since this book is not a reference work, you will also enjoy reading it slowly and in the direction of your choice, diving at pleasure through the light text that describes the Hall's adventures as filmmakers and marine photographers. And then you will also find some information about the sea-life captured in the images and poetic hints about scuba-diving and underwater photography. A nice dive, a pleasant reading and, at the price that Amazon.com is offering it, a real gift. Buy the book!
A Must Read for Fin Fans!.......1999-12-04
For those of us who read everything we can on underwater photography, this book provides an added dimension and delightful reprieve from the technical how-to's of most underwater photography books. This book is a series of fascinating stories about the adventures and mis-adventures Howard and Michelle and their staff encountered when shooting different subjects. A fascinating and stimulating book, it provides anecdotal insight into how they approach certain projects without dwelling on the technical "how to's" found in most underwater photography books. Everyone studying underwater photography or just enjoying the sport of diving should surface long enough to give themselves this present. It sure made me want to grab my fins and camera and head off to points all around the world. Thanks to Howard and Michelle for putting together such a compelling read. And of course, it has beautiful photographs.

Good.......2004-01-18
Some definite good short stories in here some not so good but none too terrible. The only one I really disliked was mel's (the writer of the trilogy). My advice is if your in the mood to read about the sea faring races is to buy this book and maybe the first book from threat from the sea but steer clear from book 2 and book 3.
Not bad, but certainly not the best.......2001-04-06
This book was your average Realms Anthoogy book. It had some great stories and some not so bad stories. None of them, however, were terrible by any measure. It is very interesting to read about what is happening in the other places of faerun and to other people during this period. Unfortuneatly because the Threat from the sea was the major backdrop of every story many of them became somewhat repeatative. But again not too bad. Overall it was a decent FR book, but certainly not the best.
Really Great!.......2001-01-28
This book was great! It helped me understand the series so much more. It lets you know whats happening to other people and other places and not just the main characters and where they travel. I recommend reading this book if you if you like good stories.
A wonderful forgotten realms book!.......2000-05-12
I thought that this book was really exciting. It gave me a new look at the oceans of Faerun and the inhabitants that live there. It has many stories written by classic Forgotten Realms authors. It was so kool!
worthy addition to the series.......2000-05-04
As with all anthologies, some stories are better than others and as with all FR anthologies the veteran authors's stories are better than the nobodies's. I've been into this series in a big way, getting to be a big mel Odom fan, and this collection of stories does a great job showing how big a deal the sea war is to Faorun. Best stories rae by Lyn Abbey and Elaine Cinningham, also Keith Strom and you HAVE to read Mel Odom's story if your reading the trilogy!

A little bit of everything.......2003-09-02
A great mix of life: romance, religion and science. GDK offers the reader an introduction to what "might be" yet leaves the readers to ask "what if?". This book, although tough for those that are not in the 'science' realm, will appreciate everything else that it has to offer - the possibilities of "what could be". GDK - looking forward to the next chapter.
Futuristic to the Max.......2001-12-27
This book is futuristic to the max, a great read offering intriguing insight and, to me, a highly plausible premise. Recommend!
A Nicely Told Story........2001-11-10
A nicely told story set in the future. I enjoyed this story. Just the right mix to keep it interesting.

A little piece of my abuela..........2007-07-26
When my abuela passed in December 2006 we were immediately overwhelmed with distributing her things. I came across an old copy of Cocina Criolla, but gave it to her sister-in-law because, unfortunately my mother nor I were taught Spanish. Coming across the English version has been wonderful. Abuela and I were planning to cook together this year, which I plan to do solo. It brings back fond memories of her and her food. I am happy to carry on that tradition.
Great wedding gift!!.......2007-07-21
I knew that I was finally in my future mother-in-law's good graces when she gave me a copy of this book as a present shortly before my wedding to her son. I had been struggling along with her spanish version of the book, and she knew I was trying to cook in a way that she approved of, so when I got this book I knew that I had finally won the heart of a puerto rican matriarch, and we know how hard that can sometimes be! I have since gone on to master many of the recipes, and my husband says that my cooking rivals that of his mother and grandmother!

Five Star Dining.......2007-02-13
As an avid reader of Puerto Rican cookbooks, I am always on the look out for an interesting new title. This cookbook, is beautifully photographed and has wonderful stories about the chefs. The recipes are really interesting and have ingredients that I would not normally have seen in my mom's kitchen, look at the pasteles recipe and you will see what I mean. Can't wait to show off our new recipes at a dinner party.
Nice Coffee Table Book.......2006-10-24
This is a beautiful book, with lots of nice pictures and plenty of narrative about Puerto Rico. The recipes are from San Juan's star chefs and showcase their fusion cuisine. This is not a book of recipes of typical Puerto Rican cuisine--in fact, the number of recipes is pretty low.
unique cuisiine.......2006-08-30
I love this book. It is about time that people open their eyes and palates to such a tasty cuisine especially that the United States has been involved with the gorgeous island of Puerto Rico since 1898. It is like no other Latin cuisine.

Puerto Rican Cooking.......2007-01-29
Wonderful book to own. I love Latin inspired recipes, and they are all in here. I also own "Daisy Cooks", and between these two books I can entertain my Puerto Rican friends here in South Florida as if I was Hispanic myself (which I am not). The ingredients are easy to get in ethnic and Supermarkets, so are the spices, herbs, the meats, the fish etc. Many storebought, premixed "Spanish" meals in bags or in the freezer section can be incorporated, so as to appear as made from scratch. Yummy either way!
Very Authentic.......2006-12-06
I have owned this book for several years. Everytime I use it my home takes on the aroma of my Grandmother's house. I highly recommend this book for your yourself and your friends.
This book brought a taste of home to Kansas.......2006-05-14
I live in Kansas and am very familiar with Mexican cuisine, my boyfriend is from New york City and grew up with Puerto Rican cuisine at home, he has asked me for years to make different things for him, things his mother made (I quickly discovered Mexican food was not similar at all, besides I am not Mexican, a homestyle meal for me would have mashed potatoes and gravy, Roast beef and green beans). She makes her recipes from memory and has not been a good resource, this book has all of the foods that remind him of home, things that he considers traditional. The recipes are titled in English and Spanish so I can search the book for a recipe that sounds similar to what he has described and he can see the title in Spanish and knows exactly what it is. There are recipes for Traditinal Chicken and Rice, Pasteles, Fried pork chops and Salchichas con Arroz. All things he missed very much I can hardly keep him out of the food before it is done. There are also recipes which appeal to me that include fruit and tend to be lighter dishes that sound more Caribbean to me. At the very beginning of this book there is a section covering the Puerto Rican pantry that describes exotic ingredients and gives recipes to make many of them if you cannot find them in the store and substitution ideas. When I first bought this book I had a very hard time finding the ingredients, I have since become familiar with the Mexican markets that carry many of the specialty items and discovered the Asian market has been a very important resource. I may not always enjoy the traditional food but he insists that it tastes almost as good as his mother's so the author definitely used traditional flavors and recipes and added some updated ones to appeal to a wider audience, we've both been happy with this book it was an invaluable find.

Puerto Rico Recipes with a Caterer View.......2005-03-11
I enjoyed this book very much. MR. Rosado is a caterer & he pre sented in his book elegant & versatile versions of our native recipes. He has the advantage of knowing the american palate better than us in PR, therefore he adapted our recipes to contain an international flair & a decided cosmopolitan taste. That is not bad because the essence of the recipe is preserved. I also enjoyed the historical facts presented. It is a valuable addition to any Puerto Rican Cooking Library.
Not so Puerto Rican - don't waste your money on this book.......2004-07-14
I have no idea where the authors got those recipes or their ideas about Puerto Rican food, but I am disappointed that I wasted my money on this book. My parents are Puerto Rican and although I was born in New York, I lived in Puerto Rico for 34 years before moving to Maryland in 1998. Believe me, no one in PR uses ginger in their daily meals.... only in teas if their stomach is upset and in desserts like coconut rice pudding. I didn't need this book to learn how to cook Puerto Rican food since I've eaten it all of my life and have been cooking it for 41 years. I bought it just to have a nice collection of our food. I don't even remember where I put because I was so upset about how misleading it is, but I DO know it's not on my bookshelf! The only place you'll find this "new" type of cooking is in a restaurant geared toward the tourist trade, not in a Puerto Rican home. If you want real PR cooking I suggest buying "Puerto Rican Cookery" by Carmen Aboy Valldejuli or "Puerto Rican Dishes" by Berta Cabanillas & Carmen Ginorio to get a more realistic idea of what PR food is all about. It's unfortunate that I couldn't give this book "0" stars.
determined american.......2000-05-30
This cookbook has really helped me in being able to perfect my Puerto Rican cooking. My husband is from the island and I am very determined in trying to be able to cook his authentic food. When he tasted the food, he said that he was quite impressed with the way the way the food turned out. He is not an easy man to please when it comes to his cultural food. This cookbook made it very simple for someone who is not used to that type of cooking or food. I would recommend this to anyone who may also be in my situation or who is just looking to expand their horizons.

Aye Caramba!.......2003-01-08
A young man from that delightful island works at the local market, and sometimes delivers groceries to our home. He often eulogizes the young ladies of his homeland quite salaciously, particularly one Miss "Jay Lowe" (an odd name for a woman, but he seems to be quite smitten). As Christmas approached I spied this book's title in a long list of closed-out items in a catalog and ordered it for Manuel, hoping to ease his homesickness with a visual panegyric to San Juan womanhood. However it turns out that this is a cookbook, as any less prurient reader would have immediately gleaned from its title. So I instead made it a gift to Mrs. Higgensworth, née Ramirez, who can hold more than just a candle to any number of Jay Lowe's in or out of the kitchen. We have dined on delectable series of Puerto Rican entrees throughout the subsequent weeks - a marked improvement on the Panamanian specialties that Mrs. Higgensworth mastered in the kitchens of her youth. A masterful chapter on Puerto Rican desserts will be particularly debilitating to the waistline of any gentleman lucky enough to have a Latina vixen attending to his oven. Andelé!
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
WOW!!!.......2007-06-21
I am African American and I purchased this wonderful cookbook several years ago. The cover on my book was different than what's shown here, but all I can say is WOW!!! What a pleasure, there were always certain Puerto Rican recipes that I loved and whenever I would ask how to make it I would get "I don't know, I just make it, I don't use a recipe." I always loved the flavor in the beans and never knew how to accomplish the taste, now I know it's sofrito, I now make my own. The description on how to make pasteles is a big positive too. I have a Greek friend and she makes pasteles around the holidays and gives them as gifts. One Puerto Rican guy couldn't believe that a Greek girl made the pasteles. But thanks to Oswald Rivera's fine cookbook it's possible. I especially enjoy his humor and the stories, I feel he's right there in the kitchen with me. I feel contrary to what the other reviewer said about pictures I didn't miss them at all I just wanted these basic recipes for my friends and family to enjoy. BRAVO! Mr. Rivera, you've put a smile on my face.
my bible in the kitchen!!.......2007-04-04
I love this cookbook! It has so many recipes in it. I've tried a number of them and I loved them all. this book is so great. My mom never really taught me how to cook or my grandmom, and what they did show me, I never remembered, I have to use recipes and with this book at my side, I can make everything. My rice is fabulous. My kids love my cooking and they tell me all the time that I should be a chef! :) thanks Mr. Rivera.
pictures please.......2007-01-17
I purchased this book and the recipes sound great but there was no illustration to show you what the dish should look like (very dissappointing). I also found that a lot of the ingredients could only be purchased at "Bodegas" or spanish neighborhoods.

I was expecting to find more recipes of Puerto rican dishes. However, it does the job in providing you with basic recipes that you can do on a daily basis. I was expecting one for some fancy dish.
Autentico y sabroso.......2006-10-10
We decided we needed some Puerto Rican cookbooks in the house, and Puerto Rican Cuisine is one of them. It really looks like all our abuelitas worked on this great cookbook with Rivera. Quite a few recipes brought tears to my eyes since I haven't eaten them in over six years since my great-grandmother died. We look forward to recreating many of her dishes with the assistance of this book. If you want a simple, authentic Puerto Rican cookbook, this is for your culinary library.
Book Description
From a reality TV star and mother of six–quick and easy recipes for busy working parents
On the first season of Hell’s Kitchen, working mom Elsie Ramos was clearly the audience favorite, though she didn’t ultimately win. She even drew accolades from curmudgeonly chef Gordon Ramsay, who praised her no-nonsense approach to cooking and her simple but delicious Turkey Tacos and Chicken Soup. But while competing on the show may have been tough, it was no tougher than the challenge Elsie faced every night after a long day at work–getting a tasty dinner on the table fast for her longtime boyfriend and their hungry boys.
Now, in Elsie’s Turkey Tacos and Arroz con Pollo, Elsie shares more than 100 of her tried-and-true, Latin-inspired recipes for family-friendly weeknight meals. As a working mom, Elsie knows the pressures of putting satisfying, healthy meals on the table night after night–her kids’ typical greeting is not "Hello" but "What’s for dinner?" Elsie’s recipes offer ready-made solutions for great-tasting, easy-to-prepare meals, from one-dish favorites like Baked Ziti and Shepherd’s Pie to dishes that draw on Elsie’s Puerto Rican heritage–Arroz con Pollo, Fried Sweet Plantains, and Puerto Rican Baked Stuffed Meatloaf, among others.
With chapters on soups and stews, appetizers and sides, rice dishes, other main dishes, and drinks, along with Elsie’s rules for simplifying shopping and weeknight cooking, Elsie’s Turkey Tacos and Arroz con Pollo will be the go-to cookbook for parents everywhere who want real-world solutions for everyday dinner dilemmas.
