Life Is Paradise is a gorgeous book, one that any Clemente aficionado would not want to be without. It includes a sensitive, smart essay by Vincent Katz, an illuminating interview with the artist, and nearly 100 very large, beautifully printed reproductions of Clemente's portraits in watercolor, oil, and dry media. As Katz writes, "One can wallow for days in these faces."
Lavishly produced and designed (with one egregious exception: in a series of watercolors the face of the subject falls within the "gutter," or centerfold, of the book, making it absolutely impossible to see), Life Is Paradise is divided into thematic chapters. Some rubrics--"Poets," "Oil on Wood," "Great Expectations," "Children," "Devi," "New York Muses," "Voices"--are literal: Robert Creeley and the late Allen Ginsberg are in the "Poets" section, for example. However, some are more wide-ranging: the watercolors include a vast selection of famous faces (as well as more poets, like John Ashbery). And the number of celebrities is staggering: Anne Bancroft, Gwyneth Paltrow, Toni Morrison, Fran Lebowitz, Philip Glass, and dozens of others. But it is the art that mesmerizes the reader. Some of Clemente's portraits are phenomenally precise and delicate; some are violent, dark, and wild; the eyes are always dominant; but all are "done" differently, seen differently, presented differently--masklike on one page, psychologically engaging on the next. Clemente's inventiveness--and this book represents only a small part of his vast output--can leave a reader breathless, wondering how many ways there are to approach the combination of a human countenance and a blank page. --Peggy Moorman
Book Description
Life is Paradise gathers for the first time a mostly private collection of contemporary artist Francesco Clementes rarely seen oil, pastel, and watercolor portraits of personalities from the worlds of pop culture, high society, and art. The revealing depictions of friends and acquaintances who have passed through Clemente's studio include the likes of Lauren Hutton, Henry Geldzhaler, Toni Morrison, Bryan Ferry, Robert Mapplethorpe, William Burroughs, Fab 5 Freddy, Robert DeNiro, Fran Lebowitz, Gus Van Sant, Edit De Ak, John Ashbery, Andy Warhol, the Baronesa Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza, Enzo Cucchi, Christy Turlington, Rene Ricard, Gwyneth Paltrow, Allen Ginsberg, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Michael McClure and many, many more.
Interspersed amongst this ravishing collection of surprising portraits are several of Clementes more well known self-portraits, in various mediums, which have become signature pieces for the artist. But its the compelling portraitures of a widely divergent circle--artists, writers, film actors, fashion industry icons, business and society headliners, done by Clemente for amusement or for special commissions--that offer a fascinating insight into another side of Francesco Clemente: the internationally famous artist who for years has been a fixture on the New York scene.
For almost two decades, Clemente has divided his time between New York, Italy, and Madras, India, and his art readily acknowledges the influence of these cultures. Clemente is widely considered one of the foremost contemporary artists in America, and his work is celebrated in art collections all over the world. The portraits in Life is Paradise span Clementes entire career as a visual artist, and showcase his versatility with various mediums. This collection gathers together and examines for the first time in detail a little known element of Clemente's oeuvre.
Customer Reviews:
Artist Is A Great Talent But His Publisher Is A Butcher.......2000-08-05
This is wonderful painting and you will find yourself sighing over what should have been. I must agree with the other reviewers at Amazon, who say this is the worst designed book they've ever seen. It's too true. Yes, the dead center, binding portion of the book (called the gutter) is where you'll find the crucial part of many of the portraits! To say this hinders the viewing experience is about as mild a statement as one can make. If I were Clemente, I would want this book recalled as a defective product and the manufacturer (publisher) made to come up with a new one, just like with a defective automobile (The Lemon Law). So why am I giving it a 3 star rating? Clemente's art works are a 5 star event. Seeing them under these circumstances is better than not seeing them. The gorgeous cover portrait is representative of Clemente's work shown in this book. The color reproductions themselves seem quite fine; it is solely an issue of design placement of the images. I'm not sorry I bought it; I do wish I had gotten it at half price though!
Francesco Clemente's Paradise.......2000-01-23
The first thing to note about this book is its gorgeousness. There is simply no other word for the stunning graphic presentation, beginning inside the front cover and continuing throughout. Orchids Unfolding could easily be a subtitle.
The portraits are compelling and would be even if many of them were not of the rich and famous. Whether oil on wood or watercolor, whether lean of line or voluptuous in intensity, they leave no doubt as to Clemente's talent.
If there is any criticism to be made of this book, it is to be directed toward the publisher. One wishes that the double-page portraits did not cleave the faces in half, making them difficult to read as they fall into the center of the spine. Surely some astute editing could have corrected this.
Otherwise it is a pleasure to feast upon the fruits of Clement's talent. If you appreciate his work you will be happy to own this book.
You Have to See This!.......2000-01-04
This is a beautiful book. The pages are a large but not cumbersome size that enables the reader to truly see the work. Some paintings are unfortunately split by the binding, but the rest of the book makes up for it. Clemente's style is so emotive and beautiful. If you like Francesco Clemente, this is a definite must for your collection.
All is not lost in the staples!.......1999-12-14
I've just seen Clemente's work (some 200 images) at the Guggenheim, and though the book isn't like standing in the presence of this powerful body of work, it is the next best thing. True, some horizontal portraits cover two pages and lose some visual experience because of that. Most do not, especially the floating images such as the one of his wife, whose face graces the cover. I especially like his series Muses, which are vertical presentations, part of which made it into this book. Clemente's portrait style tells the viewer only that which he wants told about the sitter. He removes all but the most important visual elements of physical image, leaving the viewer only his sense of that being; the figures are without encumbrance of location or time, which comes across in this book. True to the originals, each maintains its isolation from the rest, the same feeling I got at the Guggenheim. In the cleaness of each portrait, in the purposeful brushstrokes and marks, I see a clear, brief and to-the-point statement of the complex, again evoking the same feeling I had in the presence of the original. I don't think a book can capture the aliveness or presence an original work possesses, but this book certainly has captured the strength and compelling nature of Clemente's portraits.
I love this book.......1999-12-07
I received this book as a gift and although I was unfamiliar with the artist I found the portraits sensitive and compelling--spectacular colors-- the book made me take a trip to the Guggenheim to see more of Clemente's work. I also enjoyed the essay which was an informative and lively complement to the pictures.

Excellent 'Handbook' for design modeling..........2004-03-25
This text does prove and excellent `handbook' covering a wide variety of modeling techniques. While Trudeau does not tend to go into great detail, its treatment of each subject is practical and clearly presented. Though the examples may not provide new insight "for Architects" using traditional modeling materials (i.e. chipboard or foam core) it is certainly a valuable resource for product designers or other design professionals working in more involved mediums where such supporting texts are few and far between.
Overall an good resource, especially for students interested in accelerating their model making experience.
an architect's opinion.......2000-08-03
I chose this book to help with a new model, and because the book's title claims it is "for Architects." The actual information for architects is meager and sophomoric. The book appears to focus more on sculptural models for product designers. Despite its title, this book had nothing to offer me.
A "must have" for any modelmaker........1997-10-22
I am a professional modelmaker. Initially I was glad to find anything written about the craft as a profession. After reading through it more than a couple of times, I beleive it to be a well written book. It is very informative, with its "hands on" way of explaining a topic. It is also filled with great photos. I highly reccommend this book to students or anyone interested in the design or engineering fields.
Book Description
This book is for all financial professionals whose work, to a greater or lesser degree, involves complex spreadsheets and financial models. This includes investment bankers, commercial banks, accountancy firms, property firms, public sector including local government and healthcare, PFI/PPP enterprises, financial managers and financially literate general managers. Junior/middle management, where the focus would be on cash flow forecasting and budgeting tasks, will also find this book of value.
For the vast majority of people involved in this subject, financial modelling is an activity, a task requiring skills. Once people have the ability to structure the model, they have a better starting point from which to address the financial problems. This new book proposal intends to offer that starting point.
Theory is limited to the absolute essentials that aid understanding; thus the focus with this new book is very practical - this is "how-to-do-it", showing best practice, and is illustrated with many practical worked examples.
* Practical financial modelling- all the essentials in one book
* How-to approach, with numerous worked examples
* Explains the techniques and functions of Excel most use in financial modelling and budgeting

Customer Reviews:
Unlike anything else you'll ever find..........2005-07-25
When I got this book I was interested in becoming a model, not knowing anything about the business or how to get started. It took me a long time to finish the book because I was busy taking notes and there is so much information to take in. The book doesn't miss a thing! Everything you ever need to know about starting into a business like this is in there. Things from what you need to get started, proper poses, information on the financial side of things, hair/makeup application, walking, and checklists for what you need to buy. The price of this book was well worth it. I have read other modeling books and they do not come close to this one. Although I recommend this book over all the others out there, it is a little out of date. Even knowing this, anyone truly interested in knowing all you can before starting your modeling career should invest in this book. Have fun reading!
Excellent source book, but getting dated.......2005-07-17
This is by far the most complete source of information of use to a professional fashion model that is currently in print. Much of the exhaustive material here is unique to this book (at least among modeling books). It is dense reading, targetted at those willing to invest the time to really understand the industry they are in. It's priced like a textbook, and worth every dollar to those serious about the fashion modeling industry.
It is dated (published in 1990), so much of the material on makeup and styling is out of date. But that's not what is most important about this book. If you want to try to learn makeup and posing techniques, get another, more recent book. If you want to learn things that only pros know about the industry, get this one.
TOO EXPENSIVE!!.......2004-07-10
This book was very expensive, and a rip off. I returned it for a refund.
The Best Modeling Book Out There!.......2003-10-18
I've read many modeling books, but I think that this book is the best because it gives you information about make-up, hair, photo sessions, analyzing your face, agency information, and etc. There is so much information in here that I had to read at least 5 books for. I bought this book after 2 years of modeling and I wish I had read it when I was starting out. This is a great book to add to your collection and if you are a model you should always be reading books and studying your field. Don't get started until you are absolutely sure this is what you want and you know everything about the industry. Good Luck!
A tired, dated analysis..........2003-06-22
Balhorn's explicit exploration of the intricacies of the (mainly American) modelling world seem perfect for the brash mid 1980's surge in modelling interest and public obsession, yet seems almost comically isolated in today's understated chic that the industry is based upon.

Book Description
This essential book shows how to approach concrete problems that arise in everyday practice while staying within the letter and spirit of the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct. It provides the full text of each Model Rule provision in sequence, followed by the authors' guidance and commentary which puts the rule into context, identifies its key features, and shows its relation to other Rules. Clear, realistic examples and illustrative cases demonstrate how each Rule applies in practice.
Substantially revised and updated, the handbook reflects the latest developments in the law governing lawyer conduct, including the new model rules on trial publicity, fee dispute litigation and arbitration concerns, new "risk analysis" treatment of conflicts of interest issues, developments regarding advertising and the commercial speech doctrine, trial publicity, and the latest amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.

Old scandals concerning the private life of Lord Byron have been revived with the recent publication of a collection of his letters. One of the big questions seems to be: Did Byron send Mary Shelley's letter to Mrs. R.B. Hoppner? Everyone seems greatly excited about it.
Lest future generations be thrown into turmoil over my correspondence after I am gone, I want right now to clear up the mystery which has puzzled literary circles for over thirty years. I need hardly add that I refer to what is known as the "Benchley-Whittier Correspondence."
The big question over which both my biographers and Whittier's might possibly come to blows is this, as I understand it: Did John Greenleaf Whittier ever receive the letters I wrote to him in the late Fall of 1890? If he did not, who did? And under what circumstances were they written?
I was a very young man at the time, and Mr. Whittier was, naturally, very old. There had been a meeting of the Save-Our-Song-Birds Club in old Dane Hall (now demolished) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Members had left their coats and hats in the check-room at the foot of the stairs (now demolished).
In passing out after a rather spirited meeting, during the course of which Mr. Whittier and Dr. Van Blarcom had opposed each other rather violently over the question of Baltimore orioles, the aged poet naturally was the first to be helped into his coat. In the general mix-up (there was considerable good-natured fooling among the members as they left, relieved as they were from the strain of the meeting) Whittier was given my hat by mistake. When I came to go, there was nothing left for me but a rather seedy gray derby with a black band, containing the initials "J.G.W." As the poet was visiting in Cambridge at the time I took opportunity next day to write the following letter to him:
Customer Reviews:
A fine collection of humorous short pieces........2004-11-18
"Love Conquers All," by Robert Benchley, is a collection of 63 short humor that appeared in magazines prior to 1922. We have a handful of funny reviews of books that are probably no longer available (but you don't need to know about the book to laugh at the review) such as "Measure Your Mind," or "Those Dangerously Dynamic British Girls." There are a few parodies of opera plots, always a hard thing to do since opera plots are so fundamentally absurd anyway, but Benchley manages it nicely.
There are also a few pieces on how to watch various sports; "How to Watch a Chess Match," "Watching Baseball," and "The Score in the Stands" are all a trifle dated but still amuse. Students who go home for Christmas will understand "Home for the Holidays," even though it is quite out of date too; the humor endures even though many of the references are out of date (dress-studs?).
All in all, a wonderful book even though some of the humor is a little hard to get to.
