Book Description
This comic novel, which merges reality with fantasy, is about the world of radio soap operas and the pitfalls of forbidden passion. Sophisticated, divorced Aunt Julia is looking for a new mate who can support her in a lavish lifestyle. Instead, she falls into an affair with her nephew, shocking both her family and community.
Description in Spanish: "Un joven aspirante a escritor sueña con irse a ParÃs a escribir una novela.

I found it excellent........2001-09-17
I couldn't stop reading it eventhough they were too many names I really found it interesting, fast to read and with a lot of humor. What I need is that I have to talk about this book at school and I'm not very good at doing this. Can some one help me?I've got to get the best grade because I'm a little low in grades right now.Thank you very much.
I hope someone understand my English because it has been a long time since I've spoken it.Bye.
this novel is a stroke of genius.......1999-06-15
Although this novel has been termed "Flaubertian" by more than one writer (and not only as a compliment, at least in some cases), my opinion is that Gustave Flaubert was never even close to portrait the untangible spirit of everyday love, hate, lust, greed, gossip, fanatism and passion the way Vargas Llosa does in this novel. Perhaps people from more temperate societies could have a difficult time understanding how all the forementioned characters interact to form everyday life in Latin America, but if anybody could show it to them, it is Vargas Llosa. In this novel a demented, compulsive chauvinist, racist(anti-Riverplateans) and diminutive radio soapopera scriptwriter is nevertheless redeemed by an unconquerable zeal to portray what are just small exagerations of what really happens aroud him; and even serves as an inspiration for a budding writer and his forbidden love. How all this twists and turns is fascinatingly complex, and beyond any possible synopsis.
Excellent, entertaining, captivating and hard to put down........1997-10-30
I never thought I could get so much reading pleasure out of a Latin American writer. I am hooked and will try to read all of Mario's books. This book took me to a fascinating culture in Lima, and the life and tribulations of a young and aspiring , latin writer and lover and the characters of a decade long gone in the world

Book Description
This book traces the history of an engaging character, a writer, who acts as the narrator and protagonist of three of Vargas Llosa's novels. In La tÍa Julia y el escribidor he recalls his apprenticeship, in Historia de Mayta he reflects upon the practice of his craft, and in El hablador he ponders the significance of his vocation. That this fictional character closely resembles his flesh-and-blood creator only adds to his allure. Because the three novels in question have such strong structural and thematic links, it proves quite helpful to conceive of them as a trilogy. Indeed, the connections are so pronounced that a significant synergistic effect results from considering the three together. It is this effect that this volume brings light as it analyzes how each novel functions as a separate entity, how these entities are integrated into a greater whole, and how this whole fits into the wider picture of the Peruvian author's long and prolific literary career. As students and scholars alike will find, thinking in terms of a trilogy greatly enhances our understanding and appreciation of Vargas Llosa's rich narrative.

This interdisciplinary dissertation explores the archetype of the "ape-man" from a phenomenological perspective, with its genesis and present continuation dependent on extant and accreted human behavior and morphology. In order to ascertain the embedded components of the ape-man archetype, an identikit ape-man as a discrete phenomenon is derived after the examination of cross-cultural examples world-wide. Next, this discrete phenomenon and its constituent parts are compared both to extant ape species' behavior and morphology and the paleoanthropological evidence to determine in what ways -- if any -- components of each are reflected accurately in the phenomenon. Utilizing concepts in the fields of cultural and physical anthropology, ethology, psychology, and philosophy, this dissertation asserts as its conclusion that the archetype of the ape-man is a result of accreted and enacted collective memories, and reflects an important phenomenon integral to human thought and form.

Always Guard the Graveyards.......2006-04-19
This book was a nice surprise. I'm not familiar with White Wolf's 'Exalted' fantasy game, but I do like to follow David Niall Wilson's work, and so picked this up. Most of my experience with White Wolf is the 'The Masquerade' literature, and that has gotten so dry and stretched out that I had few hopes even if this was a Wilson story, but the writer's skill managed to conquer all and produce a pleasant, readable story.
I'm not sure if I have the overall story arc worked out, but I believe the theme is about the resurgence of the Exalted, humans who have been granted exceptional powers by celestial gods. In the first age these demi-gods became the masters of civilization until their deterioration plunged the world into chaos and brought about the end of the first age. Now it is the second age, and the Exalted have begun to return. To the dismay of the powers that already walked the earth.
This story is about Dace, a mercenary leader, and now an Exalted Warrior of the Unconquered Sun. In the process of escorting a caravan, Dace and his men narrowly miss the forces of the Drinker of Seeping Poisons, who is bent on the conquest of Mishaka. Dace continues on to Mishaka, planning to alert the city and take part in its defense, when he is sidetracked by another power. Sending his men on Dace joins forces with Lilith, another power, and goes on a quest for a special relic of Desus - a first age Exalted who is somehow tied to Dace.
The story switches back and forth between Dave and Lilith's quest and the race to defend Mishaka. We meet many characters who will, no doubt, reappear in later volumes. Wilson's style is strong and well textured, with bogging down in details as books in the Masquerade tend to do. It you have a taste for gaming, this is a good place to get a feel for the context of this latest of White Wolf's efforts. And keep an eye out for Wilson's books, he has again displayed a strong talent for fantasy.

I'm The author.........2004-10-27
I just wanted to set the record straight here - sorry for giving my own book a 4 star (I would have gone with 5, but that would seem like padding the vote?) The only reason I'm posting is that WHITE WOLF is not the author of the book, I am. David Niall Wilson. I have no idea why the book is not listed with my name, but I hope you enjoy it.

simply amazing.......2006-02-11
The first time I read this I was blown away. These stories are chock full of ideas, and at the same time contain some of the most weirdly beautiful moments I've ever read in SF. The impact hasn't really lessened with any of the half-dozen re-reads in the time since. Highly recommended to any fan of intelligent SF (not space opera).
Surpisingly good...........2001-08-09
While waiting at a train station I was loaned this book by a friend and soon found myself interested in the stories. _Crystal Express_ is a wonderful introduction to the work of Bruce Sterling and I found it good enough to actually convince me to try and reread _Schismatrix Plus_. If you are a fan of the Shaper/Mechanist storyline then you should buy _Schismatrix Plus_ and leave this one behind.
Sterling is actually good in the short story genre whereas, some of his novels may drag a bit and be a bit scanty in character development the stories in this collection hpowever, are quite good in pacing and development.
One of the best moments was reading "Flowers of Edo" while on a train to Nara. The story of Japan's embrace of modern technology and the destruction of its past had a great resonance for me after seeing the hyper buzz of Tokyo. I felt that Sterling also showed more hope and charm of his romantic nature with "Green Days in Brunei".
The most daring work within a standard narrative format were all the Shaper/Mechanist stories. The other stories were interesting in ideas and themes, but nothing outside the scope of regular science fiction or fantasy themes found elsewhere.
Before slapping heavier works on your plate such as, _Global Head_ or _Disctraction_ pick up this book of his early work when he was learning his craft and was willing to dare a little bit more.
Archipelago of nightmares; Allegorical sagas.......1996-10-11
Divided into three sections; Shaper/Mechanist, Science-Fiction
and Fantasy, Crystal Express provides a series of vignettes
for the reader. Sterling's Shaper/Mechanist saga follows the
developments of the two parties through war, peace and nervous
antebellum. Starting with a story called the Swarm, the allegories
are firmly underway; justifications for Caananite slavery in the
name of science destroyed by sheer humanity (or entymology).
Through a series of characters neurotic about their own societies,
the Mechanists and Shapers represent the human need for
perfection - with the reptillian Investors acting almost as Greek
Chorus - and yet despite their advances we are still filled with
horror. Sterling is offering a grim caveat that we need to retain
our humanity, no matter what devices become viable to us. The
last Shaper/Mechanist, Twenty Evocations, is in itself a series
of short stories, encompassing the life of a Shaper and yet with
the twist of each sinking deeper to what we conceive to be our
souls. So much for the Shaper/Mechanists, then. What of the
rest of the book? Amongst them are the romance and beauty
of Green Days in Brunei; evocative and rich, though the storyline
somewhat askewed; the twist at the end also questions our
beliefs of what is beautiful and what should be pursued, and
Spook, a delightful thriller-macabre, is essentially Heart of
Darkness with an unexpected twist, and a few nods to the
inhumanity of medical technology. The Fantasy section
reinforces one's conception of Sterling as an iconoclast, his
sly yet almost whimsical story of a man who attains eternal
life without the expected regret destroys a thousand myths;
wise men of an ancient city discuss their eternal reign and;
in perhaps the strangest, yet most wildly exotic in its reality,
deals with the coming of electricity to Japan. In this last, there
are no allegories, aside from a sense that now Japan has lost
all its magic and wonder, just human beauty and rich, rich,
lovingly-researched detail

One bad carbohydrate can't spoil the whole batch, but studies show that too many of the "wrong kinds" can lead to a slew of nasty health conditions, including obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Sandra Woodruff, author of several bestsellers (including Secrets of Fat-Free Cooking and Secrets of Cooking for a Long Life) goes far beyond the realm of breads and pastas to offer a comprehensive look at nutrition, followed by a trove of carbo-smart recipes. Healthy eating, Woodruff asserts, requires keen attention to the glycemic index (GI), "a ranking of foods based on their potential to raise blood sugar levels." By choosing foods that rank low on the GI, and balancing higher GI foods with protein, she says, individuals will achieve better overall health. While the first section reads a bit like a college text (heavy with charts, grams, and serving sizes, plus all the numbers associated with the glycemic index), Woodruff gracefully applies this knowledge to real-life scenarios. Her meal-planning and dining-out tips accommodate a wide variety of eating habits and cuisines, with ample hints for hearty eaters, snackers, sweet-tooth sufferers, and those who enjoy international fare. More than 200 recipes include options for vegetarians, meat-and-potato types, adventurous chefs, and keep-it-simple cooks, without calling attention to any such stereotype. Two minor beefs: teaspoon and tablespoon appear in their unabbreviated forms, potentially making for easy errors; also, a fancy typeface makes reading the ingredients somewhat tricky. --Liane Thomas
Book Description
A complete guide and cookbook to selecting and using the best carbohydrates to lose weight, maintain blood sugar levels, and improve overall health.
Not all carbs are created equal. In fact, the latest dietary research shows that different carbohydrates have varying effects on the body, depending on the rate at which they raise blood sugar levels-also known as a food's glycemic index (GI). Choosing a balance of foods that are low on the GI will speed weight loss and control diabetes, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular disease.
In The Good Carb Cookbook, Sandra Woodruff demystifies the carbohydrate confusion by explaining the real differences among carbohydrates (baked potatoes are high on the index, while sweet potatoes are low), and shares her secrets for eating low on the index. The book includes an invaluable table with hundreds of common foods and their glycemic index rating; more than two hundred recipes to get people cooking and eating low on the index; and tips to modify high-glycemic family favorites with low-glycemic ingredients, lose weight, maintain blood sugar, and achieve optimal health.

Ummmm no.......2007-10-09
Carbs are carbs. If you want to live your life eating like this, great for you. I'd rather die a few days earlier and enjoy myself.
Best book on the Glycemic Index I've read!!.......2007-09-12
My husband has a bad back and can't exercise, so the only way to control his weight gain over the years has to be through his diet. This poses problems with him being a meat and potato man who doesn't like fish, rice, or several vegetables. Several of the other books I've read or purchased seem to be full of fish and chicken recipes (anyone can lose weight if that's all they eat). I needed a way of changing the way we think about food and the way we eat, a lifestyle change that is manageable. The radical diets are limiting and most people gain the weight back once you stop because you can't follow them forever. The glycemic index is a lifestyle change that anyone can stick with. The other books also use alot of items you have to get from a gourmet shop, health food stores, or contain exotic items that are rather pricey and most of us would not eat. The Good Carb Cookbook contains recipes that most of us would eat on a daily basis anyway (who needs to purchase expensive meals through one of those dieting companies when you can make them yourself). 2/3 of her book explains what the glycemic index is, how it works, and what things effect the glycemic index of an item/meal. She talks about different kinds of oils, flours, grains, and explains alot of dietary information in terms that anyone can understand. She also explains better choices to lower the GI of a meal and things to add to lower the GI of a meal (such as addition of acid like lemon juice or vinegar) or items that have a fermenting process such as sour dough or yogurt or buttermilk. How about using thick rolled oats in a meatloaf instead of corn flakes or crackers?
I can't sing more praises or state more facts than anyone else who has read this book and took the time to comment on it. This is a must read item for anyone who is serious about improving their health through proper diet
Worth having; but poor quality production.......2007-04-19
I have to agree with the other reviewers - the information in this book is good and the recipes excellent; but it is printed on extremely poor quality paper. I purchased my book new and it had torn pages already before I touched it. I can tape it; but I'd rather pay a little more for a book and get one that will hold up.
The Good Carb Cookbook.......2007-01-13
The best cookbook I have ever owned. The receipts are easy and simple to follow with everyday items.
Awesome Book.......2007-01-06
This book was the most informative book I have ever read about eating right and staying healthy. It gives great cooking ideas and you can really incorporate this diet into you normal daily routine. Awesome book!!! I highly recommend it.
