One of the best.......2006-07-10
This is a beautifully written tale of how a good person can deceive himself (or herself) and do great damage. It is as good an examination of self centeredness and the suffering it causes as any Buddhist text (I'm a 19 year Chan and Tibetan practitioner) and a gorgeous peice of literature besides.
Of desire and duty.......2006-04-24
A French pastor recounts the story of how he rescued a blind girl from poverty, brought her to his home (much against the opposition of his wife) and how the presence of the girl profoundly affected familial relationships and his own view of life and religion.
It's a short, absorbing novel in which the nature of desire and obsession are contrasted with loyalty and duty. Gide's depiction of the pastor's struggle to come to terms with how he feels about the girl and how this affects (or reveals) his feelings or lack of feelings for his wife and family is finely done. He explores the difficulty experienced by some men in maitaining their interest in a settled, domestic life, opening the question of whether or not that is against their fundamental nature.
G Rodgers
A fascinating novella.......2006-03-07
The 60 or so pages of 'La Symphonie Pastorale' was all that Andre Gide needed to offer us a beautifully rendered account of the passions of a rural, Protestant minister, and their affects on him and those around him.
Gide's novella circles around the aforementioned minister and his 'Christian Mission' to take in and educate a blind, mute girl who lives in his parish. Gide provides an interesting reflection on the clash that occurs when optimistic Christian idealism comes head to head with the realities of life. The zealotry of this good samaritan is brought crashing down to earth when his ambitions are expressed to his exasperated wife and his less than enthusiatic family.
What proves more interesting however is Gide's development of the relationship between the minister and the young blind girl. The affection that develops in the heart of the minister forges parallels with Vladimir Nabokov's 'Lolita', however Gide develops this bond in a different manner. This closeness is on far more of an emotional and spiritual level and does not have the lascivious or explicitly sexual leanings of Nabokov's novel.
Gide's talents in respect of both depth of character and richness of prose, are well exemplified in this very attractive novella. For those interested in reading Gide, 'La Symphonie Pastorale' is a perfect starting point.
:::::::::::::::::.......2002-09-17
The 1947 Nobel Laureate in literature Andre Gide (1869-1951) wrote this short story in 1919. It is considered to be a lyrical prelude to his major novel "the Counterfeiters", published seven years later. This story is similar to "the Counterfeiters" in a way that it explores the falsehood that exists in the relationships between people.
The story tells about a rural pastor, who adopts, out of mercy, an orphaned girl, whose condition is further aggravated by the fact that prior to becoming an orphan, she had been living with an elderly and somewhat deaf aunt; therefore, she is not adept in understanding the language that people speak and the connection that exists between words and perceptions. The pastor undertakes the responsibility of educating the blind girl - her name is Gertrude - in accordance with the methods that are used to educate the blind. At the same time, the relationships within the pastor's family grow complex ...
This story is a rebellion against rigours of religious postulates. At one time it enjoyed a great popularity in author's native France and in 1946 its screen version was released. However, the likelihood that the story, the way it is described, could take place indeed is somewhat low. Not only the believability of the plot line is questionable, the emotions seem to be overdramatised. "The Counterfeiters" does not share these drawbacks, though.

Book Description
Master storyteller Robin McKinley here spins two new fairy tales and retells two cherished classics. All feature princesses touched with or by magic. There is Linadel, who lives in a kingdom next to Faerieland, where princesses are stolen away on their seventeenth birthdays-and Linadel's seventeenth birthday is tomorrow. And Korah, whose brother is bewitched by the magical Golden Hind; now it is up to her to break the spell. Rana must turn to a talking frog to help save her kingdom from the evil Aliyander. And then there are the twelve princesses, enspelled to dance through the soles of their shoes every night. . . . These are tales to read with delight!
Customer Reviews:
And they lived happily ever after.......2007-07-18
If you look for fantasy books described as "dark and sardonic" then this one is not for you. As other reviewers have noted, there is some darkness here. I didn't sense as much of that as other reviewers have. But, for me, all these stories end with warm fuzziness. I loved them. Who needs to buy dark and sardonic novels when you can read the morning newspaper and get plenty of that.
Worth It for Last Tale, Which Is Incomparable!.......2007-06-05
While I have become quite a fan of McKinley's, these short tales didn't captivate me as much as I expected, EXCEPT for the last story in the book, about the 12 Dancing Princesses. There is an airy, aching melancholy about the soldier's point of view in this story which is truly affecting! I haven't been able to get it out of my mind for days now, and I have re-read parts of the story over and over. This tale makes the entire book worth your attention, whether you are a McKinley reader or not. The 3 other stories will help you pass a nice spring or summer lunch hour, and cause a wry grin or two (except for the 1st one, which is the weakest of the bunch...I couldn't even eke out a half-smile at the happy, sappy ending myself, & the story overall was too disjointed for me). But the last will have you feeling a more than just a bit bittersweet for a long while, whenever you chance to think about it.
I love it when an author is able to make her readers experience a moment or two of extraordinariness, in an otherwise ordinary day.
Door in the Hedge.......2007-01-12
Well written and fun to read if you like imaginative books.
Excellent!.......2007-01-10
I sincerely enjoyed this collection of short stories. I am a total sap for anthologies of short stories, and Robin McKinley is one of my all-time favorite authors. I must admit, however, that this is not my favorite group of short stories by her, but it was a great read.
Next up.......2006-12-13
Not /quite/ as enthralling as "A Knot in the Grain", the next closest compendium of tales, or "Sunshine", McKinley's current Masterpiece, "The Door in the Hedge" is by no means to be overlooked.
As always, touched with the author's characteristic Fairy Tale style, but written to immerse any but the most casual of readers, each tale in this book stands well on its own, but taken together makes for quite an interesting read!
Filled with interesting, and rather original tales even if two are simply reworked, this book makes a must have addition to any Robin McKinley fan.

A Very Personal and informative book.......2005-03-20
I had not heard of the author or the title and was surfing through amazon when i came across it on their site.
As a serious student and book collector, i did enjoy Rae Beth's personal writing style.
The book as teaching goes, is indeed a great book for begginers and will inform and help in many area's of study and belief where witchcraft is concerned.
The book is a series of very personal letters written over a period of time to a married couple that the author knows, and was and is, a very thoughtful discourse to them.
She shares very practicle knowledge and has a keen awareness for the details many wiccan writers miss.
her teaching is solid in this book and her personal dialog with these people is very thoughtful and insightful.
I have ordered three of her other books and i hope they are as well written as this one was.
I found her attention to detail very helpful and her historical knowledge very practicle.
you will enjoy this book if you are serious about the practice of witchcraft.

Book Description
Hedge Magic features four non-Hermetic magical traditions of Mythic Europe. The Cunning-folk live close to the land, crafting charms, banes, and potions. Natural Magicians study the classical works of antiquity, unearthing new secrets of formulae and ritual. Spirit Masters call magical beings of diverse sorts, bargaining with them for powerful services. Finally, Ascetics, through meditation and austerity, are able to take their minds and bodies beyond the limits of the mundane world.
Whether these new traditions are used by players to create exciting new characters, or storyguides to provide unforeseen challenges, one thing is certain: With these new inhabitants, Mythic Europe will never be the same.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for those interested in the subject matter.......2000-07-13
A very good book, although the introductory fiction is one of the worse pieces ever written for Ars Magica (it's too large and feels very artificial). Four types of hedge wizards are described: Cunning Folk, Spirit Masters, Natural Magicians and Ascetics. My favorites are the Spirit Masters and Natural Magicians, mainly because due to their presence the book also includes a very nice appendix detailing Items of Virtue (for the Natural Magicians) and some spirits (for Spirit Masters). The Cunning Folk are on the bottom of my list due to the inclusion of the totally unnecessary rules of wild vis.
Be warned, though, that, if you're not intending to include any of the above four in your Saga, the only useful part of this book will be the appendix.

Educational-entertaining-a book you can't put down............2007-07-04
Trapped Between the Lash and the Gun is a story about a young man about to join a gang. As part of the initiation into the gang, this African-American youth has to buy a gun. To get money for this gun, he steals his grandfather's watch - a prized family heirloom which has been passed down through his family since the days of slavery.
As he walks to the pawn shop with the watch in his hand, he is suddenly transported back to the days of slavery in the old South. Not knowing how to survive this brutal time period, not knowing the rules of survival as a slave, he must learn to survive long enough to get back to the present.
I have taught this novel in my eighth grade language arts class for several years. It has been accorded the highest honor as my students ask - "Can we read Trapped Between the Lash and the Gun" again, today?
What a joy to teach a book that students eagerly read and enjoy.
In the process, this book teaches that gang-life and slavery are one and the same. They both operate on the basis of fear and brutality while binding one to a system where there is no escape.
Twisted in Time.......2006-02-10
A boy by the name of Jordan Scott has got himself in big trouble. Jordan's friends are bad news, and his family does not know about them. Jordan has a little sister by the name of Tachelle, and Jordan's mom is always on his case. Jordan's dad had left a while ago, and Jordan is mostly on his own. Jordan hangs out with a gang called the "Cobras." Jordan needed to get money fast for a gun, and he did not have any. Jordan went to visit his grandpa, and he remembered that he always talked about a watch that he had. Jordan's grandpa said it was passed down through generations from the slave years. Jordan figured that it would be worth a lot of money.
Jordan went to his grandpa's house, and stole the watch. Jordan didn't want to, but he had to. If Jordan didn't, he would probably die. Jordan had to hurry up and take it, so he wouldn't be late. While walking down the street in the dark, he heard a loud clicking noise coming from the watch. All of a sudden, Jordan was light headed, and felt like he was going to pass out. Jordan was all of a sudden in the middle of nowhere. Jordan went back to the slave years some how.
Will Jordan survive as a slave, and will he be able to go back to his own world, or will he be stuck there forever?
What I liked about this book was that it was very adventurous. There was no dull moment throughout the whole book. What I didn't like was how the story was set up, because some parts did not make since.
The people who would like this book would be anybody. There are mixes of boy and girl characters, so either boys or girls would be eligible to read this book. Any boy or girl, twelve and up can read this book.
I have not read any other books by this author, but I am looking forward to it.
Great Book!.......2001-06-13
Trapped Between the Lash and the Gun was a great book! I really liked the way the author mixed history with the present in a realistic way. There was a lot of excitement in the book, and I could never put it down. I would definitely recommend reading it!
A good story involving gangs, slavery, and time travel.......1999-09-08
Arvella has written a wonderful novel about a modern day teen trying to cope without his daddy by joining a gang of cobras. With a time travelling watch, he goes back to the days of slavery and lives a rough life. This "slave life" teaches him that being with family and learning are the 2 most positive experiences in life. The characters of Jordan and Uriah are well written. Many teens should read this book.

Then when he sleeps and wakes up, he is on the bus again. He is trapped at camp. Then he knows what to do. He should teach Peter some self-defense

I think this book was great!.......2002-04-24
The book I read was Help I'm trapped in First Day of Summer Camp by Todd Strasser. I liked the story because the days keep repeating and each day it was funnier then the previous one. My favorite character was Josh. The story took place at camp and it was interesting because each day something different happened. I would recommend this book to other people because it was both funny and interesting.
Fun way to explore social relationships.......2001-07-15
My 9 yo boy loves this series so I gave this one a quick read and was very pleased. This particular book explores the problems of kids (boys in particular) as they try to firgure out how to behave when confronted with kids who seem 'cool' but are mean. The first day repeats itself for Jake until he gets it right. The first time he is mean to the oddball so he can be accepted by the 'cool' guys. The 2nd day he ends up starting a fight with the mean kids to defend the 'dork' they are picking on. The third day he gets it right by helping the 'dork' to stand up for himself and get the other kids who are standing by to unite against the two who really are mean, and force them to back off.
The book is written at just the right level for my 4th grader with a bit of humor and belevable dialogue. It amuses him and I am glad he gets an important message without feeling preached to.
super series.......2001-04-07
This book wasn't the greatest in this super series because it pretty much repeated itself ,however i still liked it.

The Series Just Keeps Getting Better.......2006-11-21
As you may know from my earlier reviews, my family and I are big fans of the "Crime Through Time" series of books. The plots overall are really gripping, and the writing keeps it interesting for all ages.
"Trapped!" is the latest one I have read with my niece, and it may be the best yet. (It's hard to pick a favorite, though.) This one is a combination sci-fi and mystery novel involving art fraud aboard the futuristic Space Elevator. The story itself is great, with a driving, fast-paced plot with lots of twists and turns. What makes this series really great, I think, is the way it brings in scraps of info through sidebars and extra pages that my niece really loves. There's easy-to-understand mini-articles on everything from DNA to asteroids to John Wilkes Booth! It really connects the story line to whatever the kids might be studying in school without being distracting or too "educationsal" in the eyes of the kids. I highly recommend this book.

Bernal Payne was my fourth grade teacher and I loved all of his books then and I still love all of his books now. They are great science fiction books and this one may remind you of a very popular movie!

Book Description
Fresh new arguments for abolishing the monarchy in Canada. Senior officials in Ottawa actually looked into the prospect in 1998, but finally put the issue on a back burner for fear of the divisions it would cause. This short book raises the prospect that there will have to be some kind of bolder action at some point, if the country is going to see the end of the twenty-first century.

Book Description
Legendary singer and New York Times bestselling author Patti LaBelle reveals her mouth-watering culinary secrets for eating your way to a long and healthy life. "Treat your body like a temple, not an amusement park."
This is the sage advice Patti LaBelle lives by, and in her new book she shares more than 100 original recipes for meals that are not only good for you but taste great, too. She also shares her own personal story of a lifetime of struggling with body image and tells the heartbreaking story of how she lost her mother to diabetes and learned recently that she, too, had the disease.
In her first cookbook, LaBelle Cuisine, LaBelle featured the high-style, down-home cooking she learned from the great Southern cooks in her family. But after she was diagnosed with diabetes, LaBelle had to radically change her dietary habits and food choices. With diabetic exchanges developed and approved by the American Diabetes Association and the American Dietetic Association, Patti LaBelle's Lite Cuisine is chock-full of the kind of recipes that made her earlier cookbook a bestselling sensation. Readers will love the wide array of healthful and heavenly dishes like "Awesome Oven-Fried Chicken," "Sensational Sloppy Joes," "Company's-Coming Crab Imperial," and "Luscious Lobster Salad." Delectable desserts include everything from "Old-Fashioned Oatmeal Raisin Cookies" to "Tastes-Like-Grandma-Made-It Banana Pudding."
One of America's most beloved performers once again creates her special brand of culinary magic. Her new, healthy, and delicious recipes are destined to make Patti's latest cookbook a staple in kitchens all across America.

Great Book!!.......2007-03-13
I love the book. I just started using it. I am not diabetic but it helps when trying to lose weight.
Pattie Labelle's Lite Cuisine.......2007-03-12
I'm not happy. It's paper back and no pictures of any of the meals. I would like to have a refund. Thank you.....Lisa Ellis 904-962-3466
Be prepared to alter recipes.......2007-03-06
I like this cookbook because it gives you great ideas to start from, but Patti's recipes need some adjusting. I found that even though it's "lite cuisine" she still gets a bit heavy on the mayo. I've tried several of her recipes and with each one it tasted better the second time around when I adjusted. You can reduce or completely leave out the mayo in most recipes, and she's herb happy. Overall it's a decent cookbook to have if you're looking for low cal recipes. Just be warned you'll have some trial and error! The Lemon Basil Chicken Pitas are excellent (reduce the mayo & onion, and up the lemon) - yummy!
Patti's cookbook.......2007-02-11
I have tried several of the recipes and they were not difficult. The dishes were enjoyable and healthy. Most ingredients were easy to obtain (except for the substitute for oil in baking). We are moving toward healthy eating and the dishes helped to change our way of thinking. I enjoyed the little stories and the pictures.
Old & New.......2006-04-09
This is a great light cookbook. It is mostly made up of new recipes to try but does have some revamped soul food favorites. I love the authenticy of this book, as a diabetic Patti has to eat this way and because she's a great cook, the recipes are wonderful. I am especially fond of the layered banana pudding.
Patti does not provide tips to lighten up other recipes. You can take these recipes at face value and experiment with your collection to see what works to lighten them up.
Nutrition information is included for each recipe. I enjoy the book because there are photos and stories from Patti's life.
