As a biologist I'm insulted.......2007-01-26
This book has left me seriously annoyed. Totally unlikable characters. The heroine came off as being especially weak willed and inept. The way the heroine goes about ogling the prince while stringing along her perfectly sweet fiancé makes her look not conflicted by like a total letch. Furthermore the premise that she's doing this all to gain back daddy's love and acceptance makes her seem extremely infantile.
If you require heroines in your romance novels who you can be proud of and relate to, you won't be finding it here.
A Fun Read of A Classic Tale Turned Modern.......2006-03-08
This book was fun to read, and I loved the ending. Any ending that makes me laugh is a good way to complete a story in my opinion. I'm a fan of the classic fairy tale about the Frog Prince though, so I really enjoyed this story.
Might be appealing to biologists..........2005-11-17
I have to agree. As far as fractured fairy tales go, I wasn't happy with this version of the Frog Prince.
Wolfe has a curse put on him because he thinks he is Gods gift to women and it's not their choice to be able to say no. You would think that having faced 1000 years as a frog, living in a pond some how frequented enough by people to learn modern English, that he would have learned manners as well.
Lucy, (after getting publicly humiliated on national TV because she "found" a new breed of frog her father had previously discovered) after almost running something over discovers that it's a frog...one not yet discovered. Kissing the frog in her excitement, well you know the story.
KISSING FROGS by Laura Marie Altom tries to be humorous. However, Lucy's fiance can't be a complete, blubbering idiot, which he is portrayed to be when he believes her LAME excuses for why he can't go into her apartment. Yes, the other reviews claiming Wolfe yells "Wench!" while naked on her couch are true. I don't know why I didn't stop reading this book there. I honestly don't think Wolfe ever reforms. The book leads you to believe that he starts to change when he discovers Lucys scientific notes and realizes that he's more important to her as a frog than a man, but he never turns into a hero for me. I guess I don't understand if this new species of frog is SO important to Lucy so she can regain her fathers respect, how she could have fallen in love with this frog-man; besides being gorgeous he is never someone that anyone could fall in love with.
Also, I had a hard time fathoming an alternate reality where on Earth, we as humans are more interested in discovering species of frogs than the Oscars. UGH! Frogs? Why not butterflies or for that matter insects from the Amazon jungle?
As a concession, I have to say, I really enjoyed the scene with the crazy priest. However, this was only a couple of pages long, and therefore I would be judging a novel only on the end of the book. Yes the ending of a book can make or break a novel, but in this case I can't recommend reading the book solely on its ending.
Over all, I really can't recommend this book. Both the heroine and hero were annoying and I just couldn't sympathize with their situation. If you are looking for a good version of THE FROG PRINCE try Elle James version titled TO KISS A FROG.
Biologist Kisses a Frog, Who Turns into a Welsh Prince.......2005-09-26
KISSING FROGS is probably the worst romance I've ever read. The plotline sounded interesting - a biologist finds a new species of frog, only to discover he's really a 1,000-year old cursed Welsh prince - but the story is so horribly written, I could barely stomach it. Characters from the medieval times use modern jargon like "Okay." Phrases like "his booming laugh splashed water onto the hard white floor" made no sense. Other phrases like "swollen peaks of desire" were just dumb. The author also constantly misused the word "insure," on top of other terrible grammatical mistakes. Where was the editor? What was Love Spell thinking, publishing this mess?
The heroine is not endearing. She is supposed to be a scientist (meaning, we're supposed to believe her intelligent), yet she acts like a complete moron. For instance, she freaks about about the fact that the hero spends the first third of the book naked (especially since she has a fiance hanging around), yet she doesn't immediately try to clothe him. She doesn't even offer a blanket. It takes her several days before she finally buys him some clothes at the store. Then, instead of being discreet and purchasing clothes in another city, she purchases clothes in the local men's garment shop, which of course gives the town snoop something to gossip about. Come on!
That's just one example. I don't even want to go near the "moral" struggle the heroine supposedly has. In fact, there's just too much to complain about regarding this book. I don't have to time or desire to go into it. I'd rather forget this book existed.
Listen, I too purchased this book from amazon thinking that the negative critics were probably being too harsh. I thought it would be worth my time reading it, just because the premise sounded cute. The book sucked. Really. This publisher usually puts out good books, so I'm shocked. And disappointed. I would give KISSING FROGS zero stars if possible, and I never have felt that nasty toward a book before (not even after reading Christine Feehan's awful DARK PRINCE).
If you want a good story, read something else, anything else. My idea of a witty, fantastic, well-written paranormal romance would be BREATH OF MAGIC by Teresa Medeiros, IMAGINE by Jill Barnett, or KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR by Jude Deveraux.
An amusing twist to "the frog prince" fairy tale.......2005-03-23
Lucy Gordon, a biologist in the not so far future, wanted to make a name for herself in a time when scientists were more famous than actors. She's tried to make her father proud by following in his footsteps, but instead makes a fool of herself by claiming a new species of frog that her father had found years earlier. So a few years pass, and she's now practically engaged to a Duke and on her way to a happy, contented life.
In enters the hero....
Driving down the road she swerves to avoid running over an odd looking frog. Noticing a new species, she happily kisses it, and ends up under a very large, and very naked man.
I was so into this story. There is absolutely nothing to complain about. The hero stays completely naked for most of the book, and it doesn't seem strange. I have to give it to the author for coming up with such a strang and original twist to the tale. Ten stars. Pick this book up PRONTO. You won't be disappointed.

Information to the heart of hypnosis.......2001-07-18
Kissing Frogs easily is one of the best books on the subject of hypnotherapy available on the market today! Chaplain Durbin's writing style is informative and easy to understand. This book covers the major issues which hypnotherapists frequently work with in a straight forward and practical way that includes real examples to aid in understanding. Before I was even half way finished with the book I found myself recommending it to several colleagues for their library. A must read for all practicing hypnotherapists and those learning hypnotherapy!
4 Words:Educational, Informative, Entertaining, & Inspiring!.......1999-03-20
This book was recommended to me, and now, I recommend it to YOU. If anyone wants an objective approach and exhaustive resource to/for hypnotherapy - Here it is! Dr. Durbin is a wordsmith as he deliberates on this pertinent subject matter. Cast your preconceptions away and allow yourself insight into a subject too often layered with misconceptions. Dutifully and honestly, Dr. Durbin strips away the misinformation and escorts the reader into a face-to-face understanding of hypnotherapy, his obvious labor of love . . . and mine too. Thank you, Dr. Durbin.
Enlightening and Comprehensive. Great for all levels........1998-11-15
Chaplain Durbin's book concisely bridges the gap between ignorance and proof of God's miracles. Read on page 88 where it is states when the catholic church issued statements approving of the use of hypnosis. Additionally, on page 199 one can read about how a doctor was assisted by Chaplain Durbin to halt bleeding that could not be stopped. As an experienced hypnotist I found this book to provide excellent information. This book can be used by anyone who desires change in their life.
Kissing Frogs is a brilliant introduction to hypnosis!.......1998-11-10
Paul Durbin is an experienced hypnotherapist and pastor. His book captures the key elements of hypnosis and presents a simple method for the reader to use hypnosis for his/her own personal growth. His love for people comes through and the techniques he teaches you will last you a lifetime. I heartily recommend this book! Kevin Hogan, Author of The Psychology of Persuasion and Tinnitus: Turning the Volume Down
Enlightening.......1998-06-19
Paul Durbin breaks down potenitally "intimidating" material into bits that were easily swallowed. His use of story and metaphor enable and empower the reader to truly apprehend his position. His visions are fresh and "real!" Thank you, Dr. Durbin.

Book Description
Here's an amusing new twist on the well-known fairy tale situation in which a frog becomes a handsome prince when he is kissed by a beautiful princess. Can Snog the Frog also be transformed by a kiss? Today is his birthday, and he plans to celebrate the day by finding out. Who will give him a kiss? First he asks Cow, then Sheep, but both refuse to kiss a frog. Not even Snake or Pig are willing to kiss poor Snog the Frog. At last he meets a pretty little princess, and makes his request to her. This princess has read up on her fairy tales, which is to say that she might be willing to give this little frog his much-needed kiss. The outcome of this cheerful tale will bring a smile to the face of every little boy and girl who has it read aloud to them. Full-color illustrations on every page.

Cute Story.......2007-07-26
This is a very cute story about a frog who wants to "feel like" a prince. He tries to convince various animals to kiss him, and they each tell him no in a way that imitates their sound and makes it fun to read. For example, the cow says "Who? You? No! Go!". There are only two questionable things for young children. In one passage, the frog calls one of the animals a "spoilsport". It rhymes, but models name calling. We read it in a playful way and it isn't that bad. Then the snake tries to bite the frog saying, "take this!". He misses, but it is a bit of a violent reaction to a request for a kiss from a playful frog. Near the end of the book, a princess makes the leap that the frog will 'become' a prince, and kisses him several times. When she laments that he hasn't become a prince, the frog says, "No, but I FEEL like a prince!". It's a joke that is totally lost on my 4 year old, but she still loves the book.

"Something Special" by Terri Cohlene is a charming story for young children
The gift can be small or large. It can be planted or blown. The gift is no good until you give it away. What could this special gift be?
This is a wonderful book and I recommend it for young children. They will be fascinated with the brilliant colors and the whimsical illustrations. The writing is simple and beautifully done.

A curious frog encounters a gift in the moat where he lives. What can it be? A bug? A butterfly? A fish? A cake? What surprise would a frog in a fairy tale imagine is inside the gift?
Very well done! A keeper for your family's library.
A visually stunning book that is a joy to share by reading aloud to the very young.......2005-09-12
Marvelously illustrated by Doug Keith, Something Special is a picturebook book story by Terri Cohlene that tells of a curious little frog who encounters a royal gift outside his home near a castle moat. What is the gift? "It can say hello / and it can say goodbye / It can be small and silent / or big and loud / It can come as a surprise / and warm you to your toes / It can be planted / or blown". The gift is a simple kiss, but each descriptive phrase is vividly illustrated in a whimsical artwork; for example, the phrase "it can be planted" is marvelously illustrated by a picture of huge beanstalk spiraling toward the clouds, with the frog nestled on a leaf. A visually stunning book that is a joy to share by reading aloud to the very young.
A Riddle Wrapped in a Fairy Tale.......2005-06-14
We travel with a young frog as he collects the clues that will help him solve a special riddle. This is a book with a pure, simple message; reminding us that we often out-think ourselves. Our preschooler loved following the frog from page to page. Even now that she knows the answer, we've still been asked to read it for several nights in succession. The illustrations are captivating, making the story a fun read. Even with all the visual clues, we didn't figure it out the first time. Buy! There will be days where you will just want to stare at the pictures. They are that neat. There are many learning opportunities here: every frog is a prince (we are all beautiful); patience; opposites, cliché, and creative thinking. Last but not least, Riddles make great gateways to opening one's imagination and pushing the brain in new directions.

Kissing Away Life's Little Frogs of Complacency.......2003-01-22
A tour-de-force in the self-help genre, Sharlene Hawkes' new book, "Kissing A Frog: Four Steps To Finding Comfort Outside Your Comfort Zone" draws on eternal principles to inspire readers to re-examine their comfortable lives and set new goals for self improvement.
In an America becoming increasingly complacent with diets and exercise, dysfunctional families and career dead-ends, Sharlene prompts her readers to remember that the only true growth in life comes by taking on new challenges, in becoming uncomfortable in the process of taking on growth opportunities. Filled with accounts of people she has known throughout her life, from a father who rescued a sick woman in South America by flying a civilian aircraft into a war zone to her ESPN interviews with outstanding professional athletes, Sharlene uses an inspiring mixture of common sense arguement supported by hundreds of examples of individuals and organizations who have followed her four-step recipe for self-improvement and are the better for it. Every home should have a copy of "Kissing A Frog".

fantasy with a splash of sci-fi.......2007-04-20
While I greatly enjoy most of Greg Bear's other works, this book I only enjoyed to a certain degree. Being labeled a "sci-fi" book I naturally expected sci-fi to be the main gist of the book, however, Hegira's focus was more upon fantasy. It was only towards the end of the book when the hardy sci-fi made its appearance.
I enjoyed the characters, plots, and the philosophy behind the dialogue. I must say I'm not a fan of "sex in sci-fi" as its often unnecessary but the sex mentioned in this book leads the reader to a closer understanding with the characters and, ultimately, the conclusion.
Splendid Early Novel by Greg Bear.......2005-09-14
Without question, Greg Bear has been one of science fiction's best writers and prose stylists for decades. He has successfully written everything from hard core space opera to cyberpunk and fantasy. Here in "Hegira", he successfully combines elements of fantasy and space opera in a terse, riveting tale about the life-long search of the secrets behind the obelisks and the enormous world that is Hegira, inhabited by several intelligent civilizations, including humans, who have forgotten their interstellar space travel origins. Bear's prose is as finely crafted as an early Samuel Delany novel in this little gem of a novel. "Hegira" was well worth reading; without a doubt it is a splendid example of Greg Bear's early work.
Awesome!.......2004-05-24
I absolutely loved reading this book. It was a mesmerizing and fantastic story with implications that blew my mind (read it about 10 years ago, as a matter of fact, and glad to see new printings coming out). The obelisks are a fascinating idea, how the civilizations of the planet will only discover the higher technology inscribed on the obelisk when they are able to reach the "higher" levels of the obelisk to read what is written on it. I was shocked and dismayed when one of the obelisks fell, crushing an entire civilization! This is as fascinating a sci-fi story as you will ever find, and it is storytelling that will stay with you.
Read it or die.......2004-01-23
Wow. I was amazed by Greg Bear's brilliant sense of literary artistry. Every chapter evolved into an eloquent journey, enticing the reader into the quilt that is being knit before your eyes by this author. This work is nothing short of amazing. For too long has conceptual writing been avoided. Even for non-regulars, this work contains the rare ability to capture a once wary wanderer and find himself wandering down a gloomy alley in one of Hegira's elegant cities. Do yourself a favor and pick up this book, now.
Good characters, good setting, but not much happening.......2001-06-19
This sci-fi fantasy by Greg Bear makes for good enough escapist reading, but while it's fairly entertaining and imaginative, it really has nothing else to recommend it. As the title suggests, the story follows three men on an extended trek across a vast planet, not so subtly named "Hegira". One of the main plot threads focuses on the question of what they're searching for, and what they'll do when they find it, but the payoff doesn't nearly live up to the long journey that precedes it. Bear creates an interesting geography, and a couple of mildly interesting social orders, but there really isn't much that could be called new. There's very little science, and the more creative ideas aren't really explained very well and come off as mere fantasies. Younger readers (say, mid-teens) should find this novel a quick, easy read, and may be intrigued by its imaginative setting, but it's doubtful that they'll understand the story's resolution any better than this reviewer did. This book's greatest strength is that the main characters are fairly well drawn (at least for a science fiction/fantasy) - Bar-Woten fleeing from his murderous past, Barthel worshipfully following Bar-Woten, and Kiril searching for his soul mate - but it's a pity Bear didn't find better use for them than simply journeying across this enormous planet. Another weak point is the treatment of female characters. Few as they are, they function entirely as objects of male desire, and seem to have no will or even life of their own: not exactly a useful lesson for young minds. In summary, some good characterizations and a fairly interesting setting simply aren't enough to carry this novel all by themselves; there's too little conflict, too little action, and too little plot. Perhaps no one will hate this novel, but it's hard to believe anyone will really love it, either.

Nobu Now, by food master and restaurateur Nobuyuki Matsuhisa, is a challenging book for the cook in this sense: Can you even begin to find these ingredients? And, having found the ingredients, can you decipher the code-written recipes well enough to come anywhere near the picture-perfect results tantalizing you on page after page? You just might be better off booking a reservation into one of the dozen Nobu restaurants scattered about the world and let seasoned professionals ease you in to a world of food that descends from the heart of Japanese fairy tales.
If this isn't a cookbook but a food book come to us mere mortals from the absolute heights of food porn, well, what a delicious book it is. Why take home a copy of the menu from Nobu when you can take home the book and page through so many glorious and exotic food possibilities, Hamo and Foie Gras with Japanese Truffle Sauce, say. "I am proud," Nobu Matsuhisa writes, "that Nobu cuisine remains, beyond any doubt, quintessentially Japanese... as I have explored ingredients in those other countrues, and as I have learnt from their cuisine... this style has acquired a greater simplicity, and has come to display a kind of serenity." Praise must be shared with photographer Eiichi Takahashi who has managed to capture this serenity in stunning photos.
Nobu Matsuhisa is like those few mountaineers who are so far beyond anyone else's skill level that, should they get in trouble on a mountain, there's no one on earth with enough talent to rescue them. Nobu exists in a world of his own making. Nobu Now is the proof in the pudding. --Schuyler Ingle
Book Description
Even for those who have never eaten in one of his restaurants, the name Nobu conjures up a magical world where diners enjoy luxurious food in a chic and glamorous setting.
As one of the most celebrated chefs today, Nobu Matsuhisa is also one of the most international. His ever-expanding worldwide empire of fashionable restaurants now numbers thirteen, and they remain very much the places to eat and to be seen in each city.
His first book, Nobu: The Cookbook, a collection of his favorite seafood recipes, was an international bestseller. Nobu Now presents an exhilarating taste of how Nobu’s repertoire has continued to develop, enriched by his travels and experience in South America, the United States, and Europe, and by the cuisines of the nations in which his restaurants operate. Reflecting a new emphasis on fewer ingredients and a more home-cook-friendly sensibility, the dishes in Nobu Now are more inviting than ever to make.
You will find unique delights such as King Crab White Soufflé and Octopus Carpaccio, with nods to Western haute cuisine in dishes like Baby Turban Shells with Escargot Butter Sauce. A Mediterranean flair is evident in White Fish Somen with Pomodoro Sauce and in Black and Red Rice Risotto. Recipes such as Coriander Soba and Sea Eel “Fish and Chips” give expression to his ingenious brand of fusion cuisine.
For the first time Nobu ventures beyond seafood and shares the exquisite meat and poultry dishes he has crafted, including Kobe Beef New-Style Sashimi and Lamb Chop with Miso Anti-Cucho Sauce. For the vegetarian, there are treats like Fruit Tomato and Vegetable Ceviche, Mushroom Toban Yaki, and Avocado Egg Pudding.
Nobu’s inspired desserts also encompass a broad reach of intriguing flavors and textures. Bamboo Jello and Banana Egg Roll lie alongside Passion Fruit Pasta, while Yuzu Soup with Apricot Ice Cream and Fruit Sake remind us of the basic Japanese sensibility underpinning all his food.
Indeed, the essence of Japanese cuisine—using simple techniques to bring out the flavors in the best of ingredients—is still at the heart of Nobu’s cooking. In Nobu Now he demonstrates how widely and how beautifully this tenet can be applied, resulting in the food that his admirers adore—light, modern, clean, and fresh.

MUY BUENO-VERY GOOD ONE.......2007-03-18
EXCELLENT PITURES, RECIPES AND IDEAS. IT'S TRULY WHAT IT ANOUNCES "FUSION CUISINE".
EXCELENTES FOTOS, RECETAS E IDEAS. ES REALMENTE LO QUE ANUNCIA, COCINA FUSIÓN.
Awesome compilation of Nobu's over-the-top preparation and presentation.......2006-08-24
One of the problems with Asian cuisine is that it is often difficult for people who do not "live" in expensive restaurants in Tokyo, New York, or Hong Kong to visualize presentation. Full-page color photos of the recipes (all of them) give you a very precise feel for Nobu's vision. The cuisine is Japanese fusion (Nobu has a fascination for Brazilian and Peruvian), but the presentation is pure Japanese ryotei. A little imagination is required to substitute for some of the more exotic ingredients. Some sauces are available from the Nobu store. I can hardly wait for the Waikiki restaurant.
Eye Candy.......2006-08-19
Nobu's second cookbook is just as beautiful as the first one, and the recipes are just as intimidating (the first is at the same time my favorite cookbook and possibly the one I've used the least recipes from). So only four stars, there are way too many recipes where the ingredients are just impossible to find unless you commute daily from Tokyo to NY. But it does include the recipe for Nobus to-die-for-Miso marinated Black Cod, something that I've eaten twice in one of his resturants and have unsuccessfully been trying to recreate by guesswork alone at home. Magical and uplifting, just like a visit to one of the resturants, but quite expensive - again like a visit.
For the coffee table, not your kitchen........2006-07-20
This book has two parts to discover:
1.The "difficult to get proper fresh ingredients" cookbook.
2. The beautiful styled color photographs amply filling half to more often a full page, face to face, well deserving a spot on someone's coffee table.
When you actually look at the required ingredients for each recipe, the majority are not ever going to be cooked by you, unless you can place a request weeks in advance with an insider at an Asian/Japanese market in a very large city.
One can easily make the Banana (and Chocolate) Egg Roll, the whimsical Cherry Jello, and the Mango Pudding from the dessert section. It gets harder obtaining fresh sea urchin eggs, baby turban shells, baby octopus, shiso leaf, pate brique, bayberry, Abalone in the shell, asari clams, Matsutake mushrooms, baby ayu (or other baby fish) and first rate Foie Gras, or Kobe beef, to name a few key ingredients.
I'd like to try the Sea Eel "Fish and Chips" if I could get fresh eel, and cook some of Nobu's other goodies, if I could only get the fresh Ray, mackerel, and tuna cheeks.
I'll pass on the Shark's Fin and Sea Urchin Pudding, or the Shark's Fin with Tuna and Black Bean Sauce.Having seen a dying "finned" shark helpless, upside down on the sandy bottom, with it's fins cut off, left to starve and die over several days unable to swim or eat, this "fin" is not for my cup of soup...and the fin is "just" dried cartilage that is prized mainly for it's expense, and less for "virility enhancement" to impotent Asian men. Let the impotent old guys take an effective Viagra, and let the sharks keep their fins and go on their way. Death by Starvation prolonged for days kills my appetite for this Asian tidbit.
At least he has left out the Japanese Whale meat recipes, and some of the other live-eaten critters that some may desire...I do enjoy eating most everything else.
Yes, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that the books unwritten intent is that you must go, need to go, have to go only to one of Nobu's 13 restaurants, to try these magnificent appearing dishes, as you are not going to create them in your home without mucho work!! You will also realize that these shots are taken as if your eye is inches from the food...and from the photographers' lens...for it never looks this good in the restaurant...however close enough is good for the many who wait for weeks for a Saturday night table at one of his reataurants, to be served by one of his acolytes.
Having done some food styling and photography, I applaud the fine quality, however I've cooked more happily from cookbooks without pictures, when they had ingredients I could collect over even several days before cooking.
I like to cook and eat my own food, more than I like to look at stylized gorgeous photos. That goes even more so for even these beautiful dishes, with scarcely a fleck of Shimchi Togarashi, or even a Ginaan nut appearing even a millimeter out of perfect placement.
I take one point off for this being a high end restaurant coffee table book, rather than one with recipes adapted, or with new "doable" recipes, that a decent level home cook can make at home. Perhaps his next book will have recipes that moderate to advanced home cooks, not living by a superb Asian market, could gather ingredients within a couple days, for a similar beautiful meal. I do look forward to eating at one of his restaurants.
