SOUTHERN VOICES SPEAK OF CHILDHOOD.......2000-07-23
Southern literature was not a course of study in my high school nor in my college english classes. I was delighted when I found this anthology which contained modern stories about growing up in the south. As the south experiences an influx of northerners and other groups from around the world it will gradually lose its unique flavor which makes it the south. Growing Up In The South captures the voices of those who grew up in the region and experienced all the ups and downs that this unique region of the country had to offer. Jones brings together a broad cross section of southern writers from across the region. Unlike other anthologies she is inclusive of both Black and White writers who lived in the same region but whose experiences were vastly different but in many cases overlapped. The focus of this volume is on growing up as a child in the south as well as the exploration of regional themes that permeate through all of the fictional and autobiographical selections. All anthologies run the risk of being boring or incomplete. Jones avoids this and gives one a balanced picture of southern childhood as experienced by the authors. Just a sampling of each story will encourage you to seek out the full works of the authors. Southern literature can said to be the soul of America's literary heritage. This volume indeed speaks to us from the souls of its southern authors. Share their stories and learn how they grew and matured in a region full of violence, racism, and misunderstandings but still holds a deep sense of space and place in their lives.
This book is quite boring.......1999-12-01
Being a student of Mr. Walker, I had to read this book for his class, and failed the test on it. I would have read it, but I couldn't keep my eyes open when I tried to. I does have a couple of humerious stories, but most are very boring. TEACHERS: Please do not torture your students with this book.
This book evokes a sense of belonging........1999-11-17
As an English instructor in a South Carolina high school, I have found this collection quite useful as a tool to illustrate the great diversity of characters who live out the Southern experience. The themes of coming of age, race, violence, and the unredeemed sins of past generations are flushed out with intensity and fury. The strongest pieces included are Moody's "Coming of Age in Mississippi," O'Connor's "Everything that Rises Must Converge," and Faulkner's "An Odor of Verbena." If you teach English in the South, you must include this collection.
Great depiction of life in the South........1998-11-06
Do you know where your "home place" is? If not I recomend you reading this book. This book is also great to use as a text book for an English class. Last year as a senior in high school we read this book and analyzed each story. At first everyone thought "Oh no, just another boring book," but after the first story and dicussion everyone was in search of his/her "home place" (the place he grew up in, the people he remembers from his childhood, or a place in particular). The literature took our class on a mental field trip of the South and on an adventure to find the person we are inside. We discovered how the South has changed and also the things which remain the same. I gained respect for southern literature and southern authors. After reading the book, I began to ask myself "Where is my "home place?" I did not grow up on a large plantation with a big beautiful white column house, that -I learned- is how Hollywood sees the South. I learned that inside I have my family, my mother, those people close to me who create my "home place." It isn't only Southern people who have a "home place," but everyone has a "home place." Some poeple just need to look for theirs. It is within them, deep inside their heart, a place no one else knows of, a place they belong, and a place that can never be taken away. I think everyone should read this book as a self assignment to find one's self.

A Pleasant Surprise.......2007-08-22
I received an advertisement for this novel through an Ebay purchase and was a little hesitant about purchasing it but I am glad I did. The book is well written and the characters are really intriguing. I enjoyed following them through the story and watching as they got into various adventures. I don't want to comment too much because I hate spoilers for people who haven't read it yet. However, I will say that I recommend this book and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Read it, and then read every other book in the series. This book not only allows you to escape reality, it presents you with a conundrum that makes you think about what you would do in that situation. I am very particular about what I consider as worth reading and this is one very close to the top.

All of Lawrence Watt-Evans books are wonderful. Please print these in hardcover though!!! I hope somebody is listening out there.
Pleasant story of magic and fantasy.......2005-06-16
Recently on rec.arts.sf.written I noticed a discussion about Lawrence Watt-Evans efforts to publish online "The Spriggan Mirror." This was to be the ninth book in his Legends of Ethshar series. I read a couple chapters and found them well written and fun.
Amazon's guidelines ask that URLs not be included in a review, but if you'd like to read about Lawrence's efforts to publish online, go into goggle, search for "The Spriggan Mirror" and you find the web page.
I decided to start at the beginning of the series with "The Misenchanted Sword." The main character is Valder, a scout for the Esthshar army. They have been fighting the Northern Empire for decades. Valder ends up behind enemy lines and runs for his life. He accidentally stumbles into a hermit wizard who has been hiding out from civilization for years and doesn't take kindly to Valder who, even accidentally, brings the war to where the wizard has been living. The wizard decides to turn Valder's sword into a magic sword which will protect Valder and help him to return to the Esthshar army. With all the spells the wizard puts on the sword, it does help Valder to get back to the Esthshar army.
The Esthshar wizards study the sword and find there is a slight problem with the sword, that after Valder kills 100 warriors with it, the sword will kill Valder, the sword was misenchanted. Valder and his sword are used to fight the Northern Empire. Then later in the book Valder tries to figure out what to do with this misenchanted sword.
This is a pleasant story. It read well and it is hard to point down. While writing this review I've picked up the book a couple times to reread some favorite passages. If you like fantasy, this is a fun book to read.
One of the best fantasy books nobody's read........2004-07-22
This little gem is the sort of book that you pick up at the used bookstore with twenty other paperbacks, not expecting much, and then end up treasuring for years.
Much modern fantasy relies on rather generic plot arcs and characterization that substitutes brutality for realism. Lawrence Watt-Evans falls into neither of those traps. The book starts with an apparently rather generic plot -- Joe Average soldier gets trapped behind enemy lines, meets friendly wizard, wizard makes him a magic sword then disappears, turns out sword isn't as beneficial as it first appears, etc.
But the interesting thing about this book is that the decency and common sense of the lead character manage to take the story in a very different direction from where such stories typically go. Rather than a generic plot-driven hero-quest fantasy, this book turns, in a very pleasant surprise, into a very enjoyable character-driven tale, and what's even better, one where all the main characters are likeable and act sensibly.
Far too much modern fantasy seems to be written by authors who think that "realism" means nothing more than an extra helping of cynicism, and 'characterization" means making sure all your characters are either brutal, stupid, or naieve. It's wonderfully refreshing to read fantasy where the lead character is just a sensible, reasonably intelligent man trying to lead his own life as pleasantly as possible with a minimum of fuss -- an ambition I'm sure we can all share.

I'm not sure exactly what this book contains, but from the title and author it seems to include a novelette called "I-C a B.E.M." which Jack Vance wrote in the late 60s or early 70s about a secret agent whose body contained surgically implanted gizmos to give him certain advantages over the opposition, sort of like James Bond with more and better gadgets and the gadgets inside. The story was set on Earth in the very near future, which at the time was the 1990s. The agent carried out some kind of mission in equatorial West Africa. I believe there was a sequel called "The Augmented Agent".
This is not one of Vance's classics, but even mediocre Vance is well worth reading. The trademark irony and wit, the elegant language, the hero who does more thinking than slugging, are all here. Only the lush and well-described setting and powerful story lines of more classic Vance novels are missing. The setting here is contemporary equatorial West Africa, a boring place to me, and is described in perfunctory fashion. I forget what task the agent had to perform, which speaks for itself.
This is a relatively minor work by Vance, and I wrote this review only because the Editorial Review above seems bizarrely out of place. The Editorial Review, apparently of a work by James F. Tiptree, Jr., seems to have nothing to do with Jack Vance or "The Augmented Agent". I suppose it's conceivable that the volume contains both the titular works by Jack Vance and some short stories by James F. Tiptree, Jr., but I've never heard of an odder couple. If that's the case, I would expect the work to be listed twice, once under Vance and once under Tiptree, and the Editorial Reviewer to describe the Vance works in the Vance listing and the Tiptree works in the Tiptree listing.

The current process involves the physical transportation of an appropriate technician to the carrier to perform required maintenance and/or repairs. In light of the technology currently available this process becomes obviously obsolete, overly costly and needlessly time consuming. By implementing wireless technology in combination with advanced software allowing the virtual collaboration of parties widely separated by geographical distance the Navy can establish a "virUal technical presence" onboard aircraft carriers wherever they may be in the world. This thesis will describe how the fusion of wearable computing, augmented reality, intelligent agents coupled with CoABS, and a modem collaborative software application can revolutionize Naval aviation maintenance as we know it. The technology is there - it only remains for the Navy to leverage it and take advantage of the significant returns that it will provide.

Wonderful authentic recipies........2007-09-22
This is a truly wonderful little recipe book. The middle eastern recipe's are authentic and very easy to follow. There are so many wonderful ideas for either homemade or storebought yogurt. I have begun making yogurt three times a week, and its so nutricious and healthful. This book has given me so many simple recipies that I use daily. Yogurt has become a part of our daily diet.

Bought this for my daughter to accompany a yogurt maker. I thought the purchase was for recipies for "making" different yogurt products. It is but, also a cookbook of recipies from around the world "using" yogurt. Easy to read and follow format. Those I have personally tried are very good!

Before reading this book, I had no idea how many wonderful uses there were for using Yoghurt. This book helps you get creative with using Yogurt in many different dishes you may not have considered, plus one can learn more about the origins of where Yogurt came from in the first place. Great read for Yoghurt lovers out there!

for the Salton yogurt maker. No pictures needed just "chocked full" of useful information and wonderful recipes. After opening the book and reading I could not put it down. I pulled out my trusty paper clips and marked the recipes that will be prepared. If you are new to yogurt making or just enjoy trying new things this is the book for you!
