Book Description

This sumptuous and stunningly illustrated book shows through words and images how directly, profoundly, and indisputably modern science has transformed modern art.

Beginning in the mid-nineteenth century, a strange and exciting new world came into focus--a world of microorganisms in myriad shapes and colors, prehistoric fossils, bizarre undersea creatures, spectrums of light and sound, molecules of water, and atomic particles. Exploring the Invisible reveals that the world beyond the naked eye--made visible by advances in science--has been a major inspiration for artists ever since, influencing the subjects they choose as well as their techniques and modes of representation.

Lynn Gamwell traces the evolution of abstract art through several waves, beginning with Romanticism. She shows how new windows into telescopic and microscopic realms--combined with the growing explanatory importance of mathematics and new definitions of beauty derived from science--broadly and profoundly influenced Western art. Art increasingly reflected our more complex understanding of reality through increasing abstraction. For example, a German physiologist's famous demonstration that color is not in the world but in the mind influenced Monet's revolutionary painting with light. As the first wave of enthusiasm for science crested, abstract art emerged in Brussels and Munich. By 1914, it could be found from Moscow to Paris.

Throughout the book are beautiful images from both science and art--some well known, others rare--that reveal the scientific sources mined by Impressionist and Symbolist painters, Art Nouveau sculptors and architects, Cubists, and other nineteenth- and twentieth-century artists.

With a foreword by astronomer Neil deGrasse Tyson, Exploring the Invisible appears in an age when both artists and scientists are exploring the deepest meanings of life, consciousness, and the universe.

4 out of 5 stars Almost a Must Read.......2007-01-15

This is a challenging read. A prerequisite to finishing this book is that you have a developed interest in all three areas noted in its title. There are some wonderful insights offered the reader, but these are buried in excessive, pedantic detail. Not a page burner.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book.......2006-03-22

A wonderful book; interesting, beautiful, profound, well-made. Exactly what I had been looking for for a while.

5 out of 5 stars Making Sense of Science and Art.......2003-01-10

An instant after picking up this book I knew I had finally found a worthwhile treatment of science-art relationships. The impeccable good taste exhibited in the choice of illustrations, some of which are new and stunning, the fine layout, and the incisive prose devoid of the usual desultory obfuscations all point to a refreshing, enlightening experience. Lynn Gamwell's broad knowledge of both science and art illuminates her subject crisply. The prose is clear, devoid of any condescension. Her subjects range widely. Every page brings new delights and insights inextricably linking science and art, so confidently presented one wonders why all the recent overblown clutter surrounding this subject was ever printed.

One curious omission in the book is the role of the computer in the science-art relationship. One does not find the word "computer" in the index, nor the word "digital". Yet, some very modern examples are given, e.g recent Hubble telescope images. One can only hope this means she is saving this topic for another book.

    Book Description

John Goldberger has been collecting and studying vintage watches for over 25 years, which means he's spent many happy hours at jewelers' shops, flea markets, conventions and auctions around the world. His comprehensive and detailed illustrated book on the Omega family of Swiss timepieces is an indispensable asset to others who share his obsession, and to those who would love to--to armchair collectors. Omega Watches covers the history of more than 240 vintage models, with emphasis on their outer aspects--including the shape and outline of each case and its dial and movements, which are governing features for the collector, as well as clues to exceptional internal design. Goldberg has created a beautiful visual guide to Omega timepieces from the classic pocketwatch to the modern chronograph. Starting with the first models of the past century, Omega Watches displays the beauty, complexity and the collectibility of classic watches such as the Speedmaster, first produced in 1957, and the Seamaster, both of which are still produced today. All examples depicted are from private collections.

2 out of 5 stars Good pics - Poor text - Low value.......2006-04-15

First, let me set the record straight because it is not true that this and Kreuzer's books are the only references on Omega watches. In fact, they are the two poorest.

The best written source is, of course, Marco Richon's book, "Omega Saga" published by the Brandt Foundation and distributed by Omega (ISBN: 2-88380--010-3). However, this is available only in French. But I'm told Mr Richon is working on an English book about Omega.

That being said, Goldberger's entry is interesting only because of the high quality of his pictures. They are numerous (approxinaltely 250 models are represented, consistent and professional.

While the pictures are nice, there is practically no information at all on the watches themselves, the technology, or the history of Omega. No production dates for the timepieces are indicated, which might have provided at least some feeling for a historical timeline.

We might also have been interested in Mr Golberger's experiences as a collector, and some knowledgeable information on the current market for vintage Omega timepieces.

Maybe it's a good thing that text is scarce because where there is text, there are errors, not the least of which is that the author is named "Goldbeger" in his bio on the endpage. These 6 short lines have 6 errors in them, and I easily found at least seven more in the two-page Introduction by Mr Giampiero Negretti: clearly some copy reviewer did a very lousy job...

3 out of 5 stars A nice coffee table book.......2006-04-14

Let me begin by saying that budding Omega enthusiasts who are looking for a general overview of Omega watches and history may be better served by reading (the albeit flawed) Omega Designs by Kreuzer. On the other hand, if you are looking for a visual compendium of Omega watches, than this could be the book for you. The photography is first-rate, and the hardcover binding is high quality and should be durable. Each page is devoted to one watch, usually with a three-quarter view and sometimes with a view of the movement. Commendably the author has provided data for each watch, including dimensions and movement caliber. The watches mainly come from the author's private collection, and span a broad spectrum from Omega's early days to its current existence under the umbrella of the Swatch Group. Many unique pieces are presented, from early pocket and wrist watches to a platinum cased Constellation. Especially impressive are the numerous photographs of 30mm caliber manual wind chronometer watches in both sub-second and center second versions.
That being said, it is important to point out flaws in the book, especially given its high list price. First of all, except for commemorative models, there are no dates given for each watch. This is significant because it is quite easy to get an approximate date of manufacture from the movement serial number. Also, the movement views are too small. Collectors are interested not only in outward appearances, but also what is "underneath the hood". My biggest complaint is with the design format of the book. Though devoting a whole page to one watch is a good idea in theory, it results in a lot of wasted white space. All that space could have been better utilized (and given real value to the book) by adding enlarged movement views, other case views, or, like the excellent Dorling Kindersley books, informative text boxes.
As an owner of numerous watch books, I'd like to give some suggestions to both the author of this book and future authors. First, an appendix would be useful. Data such as movement serial numbers, movement types and approximate periods of manufacture would help and add value. A few close-up views of famous movements would be fantastic. Candidates include the 30mm caliber, the 321 chronograph caliber, Omega's first bumper automatic, and a full-rotor Constellation movement. Finally, the author seems to be a prolific collector of watches. I'm sure people would like to read about his experiences relating to watch collecting, and Omega watches in particular, in his own words. There must be some good stories...
In conclusion, this book plus Kreuzer's book are the only options currently available for the Omega enthusiast, until a book like the excellent Rolex Wristwatches by Dowling and Hess comes out for the venerable Bieler firm.

2 out of 5 stars Of value as a reference for collectors, otherwise, skip it.......2005-09-20

It amazes me that a well-known maker as Omega has a paucity of books in print detailing the history and products of this renowned maker (at least in English). Other than a hard to get and doubtless expensive official history, this leaves the gentle reader with this book by Mr. Kreuzer. A translation from German, this book is an exception to the overall thoroughness inherent in the German horological press. The history of Omega is very general and reads almost like a sales brochure from the company itself. Little effort is given to chronicling product development, especially in the era following WW 2, the most prolific period for the company and of most interest to collectors. Much better in this respect is the book "Tale of the Seamaster" by Messrs. Nakamura and Noda (Tokyo, World Photo Press). Unfortunately, this is in Japanese. On a positive note, the section in the back of the book detailing Omega movements is quite helpful, and I have often used it to identify watches.

4 out of 5 stars An Omega collector's must have book.......2002-08-11

If you are interested in more than how Omega watches look and need to know what's inside them, this book is a great resource. As a collector it's frustrating to see watches listed for sale with movement calibers listed, but not have a source of information that provides details on the movements. For Omega watches only, this book seems to be definitive in this area. I also enjoyed the descriptions of the major Omega lines and the other information on the company, although it's far from comprehensive. I would only recommend this book if you want or need the technical data on the Omega movements.

2 out of 5 stars For Really Serious Omega Collectors Only.......2000-06-14

With a far from comprehensive collection of color photographs of vintage Omega's, a smattering of vintage ad reproductions, and a barely comprehensible company history, this book's only saving grace is the illustrated history of Omega movements.

If you need more movement info than can be found in Cooksey-Shugart, buy this book. Otherwise your money is better spent on something more generic, like (Heinz Hampel's) Automatic Wristwatches from Switzerland.

4 out of 5 stars A musthave for every Omega collector/fanatic.......1999-12-15

This book tells the long history of Omega and describes all watchlines (Constellation, Deville, Seamaster, Speedmaster etc) very well. There is not much depth, but the book do give you a lot of information about the used movements, great photos and information on all watchlines by Omega. For indepth stories about how watches work, buy Chronograph Wristwatches : To Stop Time; Reinhard Meis, Gerd R. Lang or Wristwatch Chronometers : Mechanical Precision Watches and Their Testing; Fritz Von Osterhausen.

      Book Description

Omega was entrusted with timekeeping at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1932 and has since been the official timekeeper at 22 Olympics. That association has led to more than half a century of pioneering developments in timers and watches, from the first water-resistant photoelectric cell to the first photo-finish camera (an innovation that resolved the problem of group finishes in track events), and "contact pads" inside the pool at swimming competitions. They have continued to innovate, most recently with real time results online, available as soon as a swimmer hits the pool wall at the end of a lap. Yet it is the most tangible, touchable, wearable results of all this that brings Omega watches from the workplaces of athletes (including Michelle Wie and Michael Phelps) into the homes of design aficionados. John Goldberger, the editor of Omega Watches and Longines Watches here presents more than 50 years of rare and beautiful sport designs from the Omega line.

4 out of 5 stars This story needed to be defragmented..........2007-08-19

As usual, a great storyline was told in this book, but unfortunately it is told in bits & pieces instead of one nice steady storyline. There are things that are forshadowed, but when it does happen it lacks the punch that a bit more storytelling would have given it.

3 out of 5 stars Not The best........2007-05-19

This series of books is very hit or miss book one being fabulous and worth every knickle spent and this one being very brief and scattered.
