Book Description

In the year 2010, computers are the new superpowers. Those who control them control the world. To enforce the Net Laws, Congress creates the ultimate computer security agency within the FBP the Net Force.

When web service is disrupted across the world, a new nation makes its presence known. Terrorists from a virtual country called CyberNation have taken the web hostage. Their demands: worldwide recognition and rights for their "citizens." Though there are millions of CyberNation sympathizers, Net Force rallies its troops for an all-out war on three fronts -- politically, physically, and electronically -- because dealing with terrorists is never an option...

A powerful examination of America's defense and intelligence systems of the future, Tom Clancy's Net Force TM is the creation of Tom Clancy and Steve Pieczenik.

2 out of 5 stars Not for adults .......2006-09-28

The language used in the book is full of slangs.
But I do not think that the book is so bad as the reviewers say.
May be a good read for teenagers but not recommended for adults.

1 out of 5 stars why did steve perry write this?.......2005-03-22

I had thought, in the beginning, that CyberNation would be pretty good because Tom Clancy wrote a ton of really good books and many great video games are created based on his stories. However, as I read along, there was hardly anything to enjoy. Obviously, I had not read any of the other reviews, so I had no idea what trap I was falling into. The storyline of this book is devoid meaning and completely boring, the complete opposite of what Tom Clancy would normally write.
The "storyline" about Gridley, Howard, Michaels, Santos, Chance, and Keller is completely disjointed. One of the few reasons why this story is connected is that they are fighting against each other in the internet world, and using the VR, or "Virtual Reality", to track things down or to mess things up. In fact, the whole story is covered up with sex, crime, and violence that there is hardly any connection shown. Of course, if I had not been able to follow the storyline, I would not be able to write this, but it was still quite confusing.
So I ask, again, why did Steve Perry write this? He has no sense of what Mr Clancy writes, nor of his style, elegance, and flair. One cannot imitate a type of writing without being the type of person, obviously, so why did Mr Perry try to do so? Mr Clancy truly should write more of his own books, even if he thinks he is too important and too proud to do the writing. Mr Clancy and Mr Perry must have decided to play a prank on loyal fans of Mr Clancy (not that I am one) because this has disappointed many enthusiastic readers. Of course, these questions I am not really able to answer, but I would not be surprised if Mr Clancy's name was written in huge, bold letters on the book for the profit.

1 out of 5 stars Simply Horrible.......2003-06-24

Up to this point, I have loved all the Clancy books I have read. This one was simply horrible. Please note that the author of this book is Steve Perry, not Tom Clancy, and it is not up to par with the works Clancy is known for.

The story line is very simplistic and they characters are very one dimensional. About 50 pages from the end you could predict the ending with a good degree of accuracy.

If you haven't read any of Clancy's books (the ones HE wrote), then pick one of those up. This one isn't worth the time or the money. Too bad 0 stars isn't an option.

4 out of 5 stars one of the best books ever.......2003-01-06

overall i thought the book was excelent. the book kept me on my toes thinking about what was going to happen. the book was action packed with not only the whole gun slinging scene but also in the scence of how Tom portrayed the world years from now. I love how he made everything electonic. and how everything was made into a thechnologicaly advanced system.
the plot kept moving making the book a page turner. the only thing i disliked about the book, but made it flow however, was how it would jump between charators. beyond that i loved it.

1 out of 5 stars Unbelievable! It's so Bad!! :-(.......2002-08-09

I wrote my review about 40 pages from the end of the book. I must now revise it and remove all points. This has got to be about the worst book I have ever read!!!

I picked this book up because it was sitting there, I was out of reading material, and it had Tom Clancy's name on it. I was skeptical when Clancy hadn't written the book, but I thought that if he put his name on it, he believed in it.

There is no story here. Nothing happened. Nothing! ... A few disconnected scenes of people practicing martial arts, some guy drinking beer in virtual reality bars looking for clues (ridiculously stupid angle), and a conclusion that must have been written in one afternoon because the author was bored. The problem is, as is customary, I read to the end of the book to find that out.

... There were some parts that held some promise, but there is no coherency, and the conclusion is so bad that I wanted to destroy the book and any credibility it has. ...

5 out of 5 stars very interesting.......1999-08-27

This book predated the whole cyberpunk ethic + took as its subject the video camera rather than the computer. I just found a copy of this in a used bookshop and bought it because i thought the title was interesting! Presents video tape + video recording in a radical light. Highly recommended for those who tend to stray from the norm== non-conformists.

      Book Description

Cybernation 2.0: The U.S. High-Tech Industry and World Markets is the second report prepared by the American Electronics Association on the U.S. high-technology industry that examines the world's technology markets and assesses the global competitiveness of the U.S. high-tech industry. The commercial activities of technology businesses, both large and small, no longer are defined by, or limited to, national markets. In fact, many U.S. high-tech companies earn most of their revenues overseas. The global nature of the cybereconomy changes the dynamics of competition for all businesses, especially high tech.

The indicators used in this report to evaluate the U.S. technology industry in the worldwide marketplace include international trade, U.S. technology investment overseas, and global technology usage (Internet, computer, and phone penetration). New to this edition of Cybernation is the Tech Markets chapter. This chapter synthesizes the indicators above to provide U.S. technology companies with a "snapshot" of technology markets on a worldwide and regional basis. Other quantifiable measures are examined, such as market size by population, buying power based on GDP per capita, commitment to research and development, and availability of venture capital.

Additional traits that make the U.S. high-technology industry a model for success include a culture of creativity, flexibility, and innovation. The United States also possesses a dynamic and competitive entrepreneurial spirit that handsomely rewards risk for successful innovators. Well developed capital markets to finance new ventures are an important ingredient in developing U.S. technology companies. Also, our industry thrives because it has a government that, for the most part, stays out of the way. Not surprisingly, those countries that excel in the adoption of technology possess many of these same qualities. Such nations include Canada, Europe's Nordic countries, and Australia.

Despite its current status as the world's technology leader, how long America will maintain its competitive lead is anyone's guess. Much of this will depend on the intensity of global competition. Already, some international markets lead the United States on individual indicators. Significant competition exists from Canada, across the European Nordic countries, and even in smaller markets like Israel and Australia. And of course, Japan has been and remains a formidable competitor for U.S. high-tech companies. For the U.S. high-tech industry to remain on top, it must maintain its global competitiveness and develop new technologies.

But as this report shows, this is only half the battle. Many of the decisions made to date by U.S. policy makers, such as deregulating the telecommunications sector, reducing barriers in foreign markets, and creating a business-friendly climate, have helped the United States gain its leading global position. This is in sharp contrast to markets like Japan and Germany that have been prosperous during much of the manufacturing-driven 20th century, but their current policies are not keeping up with the fast-paced, flexible, knowledge-driven economy of the 21st century. The most successful economies worldwide are those that allow the business community to react quickly to new market conditions.

Cybernation 2.0 is one of AeA's cyber reports. The intent of these reports is to provide a better understanding of the importance of the American high-technology industry, internationally, nationally, and locally.

              Book Description

This study of the pursuit of the "automatic factory" focuses on the key industry of metalworking in Britain, Italy, Japan and the United States. It unveils a recurring historical conflict between two logics of factory management and organization: workshop principles and principles of a standardized factory. Case studies of "Flexible Manufacturing Systems" in these four countries and their sociopolitical contexts show national variations and tensions between factory and workshop principles continuing into the age of computerization.

                5 out of 5 stars a new favorite.......2006-12-15

I am partial to retelling of fairy tales. I've read at least 5 other re-tellings of this particular one. The ones that retain the magic are M/F and the only other one that is F/F strips the story of the magic and sets the story in early twentieth century USA. When I reached the end of this book - a novella in reality - I wanted more. Wolfe writes with a deft hand. It is a pity she died so young. I wondered for a while what the monstrosity of this particular beast was, only to find that her love of women made her a monster. The delight of this story for me was in following Angelique as she works to convince Drew that she isn't a monster and that Angelique does in fact love her and wants to spend her life with Drew.
I've only had the book a short time and have already read it twice. It is one of my two favorite retellings of Beauty and the Beast

                5 out of 5 stars A dreamy romance.......2006-02-02

I find it sad that this book hasn't been reviewed in so long. I'd give it more stars if i could. I bought this book years ago and just absolutely fell in love with it!!! In fact, i'd like to buy another one since i don't have my original currently with me. It's worth it!!! If you're looking to 'get away' for a bit and live in a world of fantasy and heavenly/magical love, then this is the story for you. If you're looking for realistic plots and actions, then, this isn't the book for you. The book itself was short; however, i suspect that's because i love romance and i just didn't want it to end. Definitely a book that'll stay in my collection and one i recommend to anyone who loves romance. It's my favorite!!! Oh, and by the way, the character called Drew.......all i can say is, wow!!!

5 out of 5 stars A fairy tale I can relate to... finally!.......2002-04-16

I grew up reading fairy tales, watching all the Disney animated features... and loving them. But it wasn't until I read this one when I realized I was just accepting what Disney and others presented to me.

Roses & Thorns is exceptionally written by Chris Anne Wolfe. I don't see how anyone could be disappointed by this book. I found that I could identify with both of the main characters. I fell in love with them as they fell in love with each other. And the beast is not who or what you might expect.

If you're like me and like to read books more than once, this book is definite worth it.

And when you're finished, seek out other books by Chris Anne Wolfe - published by Windstorm Creative ...they are likewise exceptional.

                4 out of 5 stars A cure for Disney.......2001-12-18

Tired of Disney turning all the gritty, dark, brooding tales into picture-perfect, cliched, one-dimensional and downright *perky* stories? A book like this can cleanse the mind of the sticky Disney residue to this particular tale, especially for us lesbians.

I would love to see other lesbian writers pick up the torch Miss Wolfe raised, and tackle the other tales that have been Disneyfied -- c'mon, I bet Laura Adams could do wonders with "The Little Mermaid."

                3 out of 5 stars A Good Premise, but..........2001-11-11

I thought the premise for this book was excellent, but I feel that the story could have been quite a bit stronger. I felt that the book shortchanged itself by being as short as it was. A longer book could have had more details, more background, and more of the elements that make a compelling fairy tale retelling. The book was not bad, but I felt it could have been quite a bit better.

                Book Description

Corgan, hero of the Virtual War, has been living a blissful, if placid, life on the Isles of Hiva, his reward for winning the War with Sharla and Brig. But what he doesn't know is that Brig died soon after the War, and yet is not truly gone. Sharla had saved some of Brig's DNA and has created clone-twins with it. Corgan's world is disrupted when Sharla brings one of the clone-twins, Seabrig, to him to raise on the island, while she keeps the other, Brigand, with her in the Domed City.

However, when circumstances force Sharla to bring Brigand to the island, they find that while the boys might look identical, their temperaments are not. And, as a result of the cloning process, both boys are growing at an astonishing rate. This leaves Corgan alone with an increasingly dangerous and unstable Brigand -- who is looking to get rid of Corgan once and for all!

4 out of 5 stars Middle School Excitement!.......2005-06-10

My son says: This book has excitement, love, and hidden secrets. If you like books about people who were once your friend and turned into enemies, crazy myths, and drama, brothers who turn against each other, future, and crazy cities, then this would be a great book for you to read. Boys and girls between the ages of 9 to 14 would enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Try i want to read the next one!!!!!!.......2004-01-10

I have read Virtual War and The Clones and until I read these books I never really was interested in science fiction, but now I have started reading more of it. I loved both of the books I couldn't put them down, my whole school loved the books. Now I'm waiting with increasing excitement to read The Revolt, I am going to read it the first day it comes out . These books are great even if your not sure about science fiction you should try them

                5 out of 5 stars I love this book.......2003-09-20

I thought that I had every good book our high school library had to offer, but as I was scanning the shelves those bright, bold letters poppped out at me, THE CLONES , it immidiatly piqued my interest and when I started to read it I couldn't
put it down. The mystery, the action, the romance. This is a very good book and I highly recommend it for anyone who even slightly likes science fiction. my only complaint is that the ending is a cliffhanger. Monday morning I am going back to my library to find the third book!

5 out of 5 stars Brigand or Seabrig-- Which will survive?.......2002-11-05

Second in a planned series, the author takes us to the Island of Hiva, where battle hero Corgan now lives. His friend and former companion Sharla comes to the island with a surprise-the cloned baby of their friend Brig, who died soon after the war. As a result of Sharla's genetic research, cloned twin infants are growing at a whirlwind rate, maturing years in a matter of weeks. Despite their identical features, Corgan soon realizes their dispositions are quite different. When Seabrig, the twin he is raising, loses a hand in a swimming accident, Corgan can't overcome the terrible feeling that Sharla's twin, Brigand, did it on purpose. Whatever the outcome Brigand desired, it seems to have backfired when he is left on the island with Corgan, whom he sees as a rival for Sharla's affection.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome back, Corgan and Sharla.......2002-07-11

I met Corgan, Sharla and Brig in the Virtual War. As a grandparent and teacher I always look for good science fiction. The Clones can be read as a stand alone since Gloria Skurzynski fills in the backstory. Good fast moving tale that took me back to the doomed city. Gave my copy to my grandson.

                5 out of 5 stars A great help.......2007-08-03

I love this cook book! My children are a little older now but I still use it. Simple but very tasty! Great short-cuts and it even lives up to our "snotty" food tastes. I give it to all new moms now.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-01-27

My husband and I bought this book at a baby expo where we met the writers. I decided to start trying out recipes in this book while waiting for our daughter's arrival.

The asian chicken drumsticks were the best I have ever had. I called my mother right away so she could make it too! This book just proves that very few ingredients can make an awesome dish.

The recipes are simple, preparation time is short, and the food is delicious. I can't wait for the second book.

                5 out of 5 stars a terrific help.......2007-01-09

This book offers wonderful tips. I have enjoyed
using them. I recommend it to all one-armed cooks.

This book gives wonderful suggestions for helping a busy mom de-stress when planning for a crowd. The Mediterranean Chicken is the tastiest chicken dish my family and I have ever tasted!! I highly recommend that dish!

While shopping for a relative's baby shower, the catchy title of this book caught my eye. Mother of a four year old, I realize how challenging the beginning of motherhood is, as well as how challenging it remains. Time for elaborate cooking is nonexistant, espcially while working full time, and this book offers many timesaving and smart tips. The recipes are easy and taste wonderful. It is the first cookbook I have read cover to cover!
