A Slight Work.......2005-08-27

Having thoroughly enjoyed Everett's novel "God's Country," I was eager to read more of his work. However, "Cutting Lisa" was a considerable disappointment. The premise itself is interesting - a retired doctor is disturbed by his son's troubled marriage at the same time that he is rediscovering his own capacity for life - but Everett's style here is frustratingly clumsy. This is the work of a promising but unpolished student, one who would go on to find far more interesting things to say and a much stronger voice with which to say them.

Brilliant new voice.......2003-06-30

Ms. Bourbeau's first book is stunning in its use of language and syntax, and profound in the deep understandings that ordinarily escape our language. Finding perfect words to convey the unsayable, she captures profoundest reality again and again.
This is a poetic voice like none other, thorougly original, totally imbued with love for the world and its people, and the word.

Gardening for the Soul.......2003-06-19

When the poem worms its way through her perception and finally onto paper, it will be a poem revealing its subject and soul in a way unlike any other poet writing. Lisa Bourbeau's firm and dogged pursuit of looking from multiple perspectives, of allowing those perspectivess their individual (and multiple) voices to come forward, creates a republic of voices in this unique poetry. Bourbeau becomes the poem's chameleon, shape-shifting and mutating her skills as the poem requires. This comes about, perhaps, because of Bourbeau's own doubt. She is hardly alone in such doubt, but she is unusual in her ability to manipulate this feeling into a tool that lets her take risks and achieve ever-stronger strategies of language. Once a poem has been put aside, irrespective of whether she senses it a success or a failure, no single poem is considered the ultimate in voice or form. For Bourbeau, it is the next poem?when it comes?that will provide the key to unlock what a poem is, or ought to be. This constant seeking, this pursuit of the "final" poem as an artifact, as a process, as an experience, is what keeps the poetry of Bourbeau fresh and interesting. In these visions, we see our small and daily "fears" as we have seldom seen them, turning each over as if it were a stone in a well-tended garden to reveal what may be living under it in the damp earth. These poems have an uncanny ability to surprise with each turning, not merely in Bourbeau's skillful turning of the line but also in her deep observation. There is a tenderness of heart in these poems that has the ability to break narrative as well as extend it. Boubeau's storytelling is sometimes evasive, sometimes confessional, but it is always sensuous and ennobling. Every poem is a test of composure, a voice for difficult subjects and times.

Looks can be deceiving, and in a society where one's status and access to opportunity are largely attendant on physical appearance, the issue of how difference is constructed and interpreted, embraced or effaced, is of tremendous import.

Lisa Walker examines this issue with a focus on the questions of what it means to look like a lesbian, and what it means to be a lesbian but not to look like one. She analyzes the historical production of the lesbian body as marked, and studies how lesbians have used the frequent analogy between racial difference and sexual orientation to craft, emphasize, or deny physical difference. In particular, she explores the implications of a predominantly visible model of sexual identity for the feminine lesbian, who is both marked and unmarked, desired and disavowed.

Walker's textual analysis cuts across a variety of genres, including modernist fiction such as The Well of Loneliness and Wide Sargasso Sea, pulp fiction of the Harlem Renaissance, the 1950s and the 1960s, post-modern literature as Michelle Cliff's Abeng, and queer theory.

In the book's final chapter, "How to Recognize a Lesbian," Walker argues that strategies of visibility are at times deconstructed, at times reinscribed within contemporary lesbian-feminist theory.

Awesome story, but requires previous Shadowrun exposure........2004-04-22

Technobabel may not make a lot of sense to readers that are new or completely unfamiliar to the Shadowrun novels or the RPG.
It's a shame too, because this is an exciting novel full of the usual corporate double-crosses, "Who's really pulling the strings?" paranoia, with some inner struggles between free-will and fate/destiny thrown in for good measure. It's sort of like "The Usual Suspects" meets "The Lawnmower Man" and "The Matrix".
To properly appreciate Technobabel, I suggest first reading some other Shadowrun novels about elite runners like: Fade To Black, Wolf and Raven, or Preying For Keeps. Reading the Dragon Heart Saga is probably a good idea also before picking up Technobabel.

In addition to being one of the best of the SR novels, Technobabel is a good resource for experienced Shadowrunners in running one of the RPG's highest level of threat-rating adventures. This next section reviews that aspect of the book for gamemasters/players of Shadowrun RPG:

Technobabel gives some insight about the otaku tribes culture, reveals the origins of the enigmatic and powerful NPC, Ronin, and gives some details about the motivations of the Matrix group Overwatch. All of this is accomplished while giving a detailed account the events during the Renraku Arcology Shutdown, and the subsequent aftermath. This book changes the Shadowrun RPG landscape on as many levels as did Dunkelzahn's Assassination, the collapse of Fuichi Corp., and the Year of the Comet sourcebook.
It is required reading for any gamemaster planning on running the highly-lethal 3rd Edition adventure "Brainscan". You'll want to keep it off-limits to your players until after you run the adventure, as it spoils many of the arc's plot twists. FASA designed "Brainscan" so you pretty much need to also purchase the 2nd edition adventure "Renraku Arcology: Shutdown", and Technobabel to properly use it. Be aware that the Nanotechnology section of the "Man & Machine" sourcebook is set after the events in "Brainscan", so you might wish to suppress that chapter prior to running the adventure.

Rise of the Tecnoshaman.......2003-07-18

Another book that I picked up after reading through the Matrix 2.0 sourcebook (The other being Psychotrope). The story revolves around a young man newly inducted into the Otaku ranks. While significantly older than most Otaku, Babel's powers have not waned. Though not directly mentioned by name in this book, the AI Deus is present and is responsible for Babel's transformation.

One of the more interesting SR novels.......1999-09-01

Not only do you get insight into the Otaku, but backround on the reciently concluded Corporate War (ya, like it's over. . .), and apperances by a fair number of the "movers and shakers" of the SR universe.

This book also repairs some of the flaws of Black Madonna. Oh, and that. . .personage. . .from B.M. should definately have known better than to mess with Lofwyr's corporate computer system (I guess ancient elves never learned to Never Deal with a Dragon).

The awakening of the first 'Techno-shaman'........1998-10-06

Boston 2059, a new type of shaman awakens with no memory in a back alley, paralyzed and being 'collected' by freelance body part bootleggers. After barely escaping, 'Babel' is snatched again and again by 'friends' who want to use him and his newly awakened abilities. Because Babel is not an ordinary mage. He is one of the first Techno-shaman. His is not the power to call or control the spirits of the elements, but the 'spirits' within the Matrix. And with an almost magical control of anything within the Matrix, is the potential control, or destruction, of any or all of the Megacorps now in control of the world..

A Good Introduction, But A Bit Hard to Follow.......2002-09-14

"Cavaliers and Roundheads" is the story of the English Civil War of 1642-49 between King Charles I and Parliament which lead to the beheading of Charles on January 30, 1649 and the installation of Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector.

The book is well written and tends to present the story chronologically. The alignment of forces and shifting military advantages are explained. The ultimate arrest and trial of the King, followed by his execution, bring the war to its conclusion. The ascendency of Cromwell was brief and his reputation swiftly tarnished until his rehabilitation in the 19th century. The restoration of King Charles II lead to the veneration of Charles I as a martyr King.

The book is, largely, limited to a factual reporting of the events of the war. The explanation of the causes and results of the war are brief. There is little treatment of any underlying social causes or effects of the dispute between King and Parliament.

My rating of this work is fairly low because of the difficulty I had in following all the Dukes and Lords involved in the story. Perhaps a reader with a greater familiarity with this era of English history would find this work to be more interesting. I would rate it as a fair introduction to this period of history. It would probably better serve a reader a more prepared for an in depth study of the era.

A master storyteller...........2001-07-07

A master storyteller for a wonderful story! Christopher Hibbert is perhaps the most renowned British historian in this day and age, and this book is no exception to his mastery. The storyline of the English civil war lets the reader view both sides subjectively...sometimes becoming disgusted or enamored with both. This is an A+ book, and a great amount of fun to read.

I like this book. It has a lot of cute folds, it is easy to follow and the book is laid out well. It even has a section on some folds for children. The only thing that could possibly make this book better would be if it was in color.

I bought this book after considering several others on line, and now I won't need to buy another. I wanted something that was easy to understand and follow to make the dinner table a little something special for my wife after she comes home from work. Having dinner ready was just not enough for me, and thought about the napkin presentation. This book has more than you will ever need, and each one is clearly drawn out and easy to understand. Money well worth spent.

This book has easy to follow instructions and is very informative about the history of the napkin folds. My husband smiles when he sits down to eat. It's fun decorating the table now.

Being a napkin enthusiast, naturally I'm quite an avid fan of Linda Hetzer, however, I find it immensely unnerving that she inexcusably has omitted several key napkin folding solutions. Apparently, she just wouldn't make the effort to list 100 Fancy Folds, just only 94 - how revolting.
