Gissing In Brief Form.......2005-03-25

This novella, at 125 pages, contains many of the trademark Gissing facets: introspective, thoughtful people struggling to balance very human impulses with a sense of social responsibility. The protagonist wants to be brusque about himself, giving short shrift to his more developed morality and admonishing himself for his all-too-mortal desires. Circumstances have been difficult in his life, and temptations and depression always flirt with him as he navigates through a career and singlehood. Amidst a small circle of friends he gets to know someone he thinks is his distaff equivalent, a woman who has faced struggles but keeps her head above water with pride. Each of the primary players faces choices that are difficult. The story does not push forward with an energetic plotline, but rather respresents a character study of young adults in romance and friendships. Not Gissing's strongest work, but a fine and rare selection for fans if they can locate a copy.

Eve's Ransom is a short (125 pages) novel concerning the efforts of a young man to, in effect, buy the affection of a mysterious young woman. Actually, he really is just trying to help "a friend in need". But the young woman leads him on, accepts his money, and in the end ... well, you know how these things turn out.
Yes, the story is simple. However any material from George Gissing is an interesting read, especially for those interested in the more social aspects of Victorian society. Money and greed are also common themes, and Mr. Gissing makes keen observations in these areas that are true even today.

Eve's Ransom is a must read for George Gissing fans. For those who have not read any of George Gissing's novels I recommend first reading New Grub Street. It is unfortunate Eve's Ransom is no longer printed. No, it's not George Gissing's best novel. But it is still a worthy read.

George Gissing was an English novelist, who wrote twenty-three novels between 1880 and 1903. Although his early works are naturalistic, he developed into one of the the most accomplished realists of the late-Victorian era. Born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, to lower-middle class parents, Gissing went on to win a scholarship to Owens College, the present day University of Manchester. A brilliant student, he excelled at university, winning many coveted prizes, including the Shakespeare prize in 1875. Between 1891 and 1897 (his so-called middle period) he produced his best works, which include New Grub Street, Born in Exile, The Odd Women, In the Year of Jubilee, and The Whirlpool. The middle years of the decade saw his reputation reach new heights: by some critics he is counted alongside George Meredith and Thomas Hardy as one of the best three novelists of his day. He also enjoyed new friendships with fellow writers such as Henry James, and H.G. Wells, and came into contact with many other up and coming writers such as Joseph Conrad and Stephen Crane.

Solid, fantastic, rich, and full--even for a new reader.......2002-07-22

This book kept me up into the wee hours before I had to admit defeat and turn out the light. The characters were engaging, and the world is vividly drawn. This is old-style fantasy in the sense that the author has created a world that I'd like to visit, and people that I'd like to know.

It's also old-style fantasy in the fact that Reimann's world is completely suffused with magic--every doorpost seems to have its own charm or fetish or burnt offering to the gods. But the gods and their influence on human affairs are not overdrawn. Their motives and the extent of their actual influence remain mysterious--in a good way.

An enjoyable read. I'm still thinking about the characters a couple of weeks after I put the book down--always a good sign.

fantastic fantasy.......2002-07-08

The Arleon Forest witch Gaultry Bas captures Tullier of the Bissanty Empire before he can assassinate Prince Benet of Tielmark. Gaultry returns to Tielmark accompanied by Tullier while praying to the Twin Goddesses that her country will finally thrive in peace and domestic tranquillity. However, she also believes that for this to happen, Prince Benet must become crowned king.

The Common Brood witch coven disagrees as they conclude that the time is right to begin the final phase of a deadly and ancient plot. Though she prefers otherwise, Gaultry knows she must fight for freedom for her people as the Bissanty Empire once again threatens the sovereignty of Tielmark. To succeed she must ally with an apparent enemy, The Common Brood.

PRINCE OF FIRE AND ASHES, the final chapter in Katya Reimann's epic fantasy Tielmaran Chronicles, is a tremendous tale. The novel closes the subplots left behind from the previous two tales (WIND FROM A FOREIGN SKY and A TREMOR IN THE BITTER EARTH) yet manages to keep the prime story line of this book interesting and moving, enabling this novel to be a stand alone tale too. That well executed exciting combo is what fans will marvel about as much as the maturing of Ms. Reimann into a monster force within the genre.

Reimann's Best Yet!.......2002-07-02

Have you read, and loved, Lois McMaster Bujold's Curse of Chalion, anything by Steven Brust, or some early Robin Hobb? Then read this book. Or, if you've read Reimann's first two Tielmaran novels, you won't need any convincing. This is easily the best of the three -- the only problem was how long it took to write it! Return readers will get some things they expect -- fast action, powerful magic, and a beautiful sense for wild, rugged terrain -- and some things they may not -- new, ah, developments between Gaultry and Martin, and some great new characters (the Climens family, Agrat and Elizabeth, were my favorites). And of course, this book ties up the other two to end the series (for the moment anyway). Good that Reimann resisted the temptation to milk these great settings and characters dry for a hundred books, but I still hope she'll come back to them. There's plenty of magic and adventure left in this vivid world.Maybe some more stories about Agrat and her children? We can only hope... anyway, great book!

the horseclans continue.............2001-03-30

Taking place after a nuclear apocalypse, the swords of the horseclans is a continuation of the story of the High Lord Milo and his horseclans. He and his allies have to face an army comming from the south and face the evil Witchmen (20th century scienctists) once again. The story is a little bloodthirty and is not for the timid. If you get a hold of these books I highly recommend that you read them. Be warned there are a lot more books in this series.

I can't fully express how much I have enjoyed cooking from this book. I have always loved collecting cookbooks and making interesting recipes from them. However, January 1 I decided that I wanted to take charge of my lifestyle and eat more healthily. I was disapointed as I started to look at most healthy cookbooks available. They seemed like healthy retools of Betty Crocker favorites and often seemed to use a lot of very processed ingredients. Or they seemed very focused on the health aspect of food with little emphasis on taste.

What I love about this food is that it tastes amazing and oh by the way, happens to be healthy too. So far I have made three recipes and all have turned out great. I especially like the vanilla bean ice cream recipe as it is so easy to experiment with other flavors and tastes amazing. I don't miss full fat ice cream at all. The photography is also gorgeous. It makes me get very excited about what I am going to make. I also appreciate that there is a section on vegetarian meals because while I do eat fish, meat and poultry, I occasionally like to make something purely vegetarian and that section gives me some nice options.

I was requested to cook from this cookbook and so I purchased it. I was really happily surprised by the sophisticated tastes of this healthy and mostly simple food. I am continuing to cook from it and am ready to try other Canyon Ranch books.

I ordered this book site unseen after reading UltraMetabolism. This book is great for the average food lover, those with food intolerances and those who like to cook healthy. It has some staples such as salad dressings, to more inventive dishes that are still simple to prepare. Great all-around cookbook and I would recommend it to anyone.

This is a great book, however, they seem to be the same recipes as the newer Canyon Ranch Cooks book, only in a different format, the newer is not in ring binder only hardback. Either way, the recipes are great - and I feel so virtuous - like I'm doing something good for me.

A life changing experience.......2002-03-06

Having just returned from Canyon Ranch, I was anxious to try the new recipes and a bit skeptical that my family and friends would eat them. There was no problem at all. Besides being healthy, the recipes taste delicious. Even my 3 small children enjoy eating my new creations and my husband no longer turns up his nose when I return from the grocery with Tempeh and FLax Seed. The first chapter on what you need to stock for a healthy kitchen provides the essential building blocks. I recently hosted a dinner party for 8 where I served the poached salmon in orange relish, lemon-poppyseed cake and Quinoa (all from the cookbook). The compliments were never ending and we spent much of the evening talking about nutrition and health. If you can't get away with 5 days at Canyon Ranch, this cookbook will help you meet whatever health needs you may have deliciously. I dare you not to buy the first one when you've exhausted all the recipes in the second.
