1 out of 5 stars Possibly the worst book ever written.......2004-05-03

We have all had the experience of reading a book that speaks to our own experience, and identifying with it. Doubtless, this is such a book for some people, as evidenced by the other reviews. However, on its own merits, this book is simply horrible. The premise is ridiculous, the characters are unbelievable, and the story is internally inconsistent. The writing is so bad it could be a cariacture (remember Snoopy typing "It was a dark and stormy night"?) and the editing (as noted by another reader) is non-existent. For anyone who has ever been to Brimfield, it is obvious that the depiction in the book is completely unrealistic.

I am a big fan of a good story without requiring that it have "redeeming social value." Colleen McCollough is a good example of this kind of writer. But I do want my beach novels to be well written, and this one is anything but.

5 out of 5 stars A great read whether you collect antiques or not.......2001-04-09

This book is pure escapism and enjoyment if you like colorful characters, suspense and humor all wrapped up in a captivating love story. This takes place in the very unique setting of the antiques and collectibles industry with the specific backdrop being Brimfield -- the mega event of the industry.

There are great metaphors about how it's hard to tell a real treasure from a fake in choosing antiques as in relationships. The writing style is fresh, at times beautifully poetic, honest and with a wonderful redeeming quality about human nature. I think men and women would enjoy this book. Reading it provides a great escape, and the setting in the antiques business is fascinating.

Does anybody know of any other good books by this author? He has great style and freshness, and I hope we get to see much more from him.

2 out of 5 stars Reader Beware!.......2001-02-25

The premise of the book - that people search for objects to complete themselves - was of thought provoking. The author's style, however, was far too overdone for my tastes. He repeated characteristics of both people and places, far too many times. How many times can he refer to Brimfield as "the ultimate one-night stand" -- I got it the first time.

2 out of 5 stars Not horribly BAD, just not good either..........2001-02-22

The aspects of the story that concern the antiques trade and the madness of Brimfield are interesting enough. I found the rest of the book to be very ho-hum -- there wasn't a single character who was particularly compelling or likable, and the story is mostly predictable and dull. I just didn't care what happened to any of these people.

And, I hate to be too English-majory, BUT...

WHO edited this book? Anybody? The number of typos, as well as all the times that the wrong form of "it's" or "their" is used, is just embarrassing. The biggest editing problem is the persistant pronoun confusion, with all the sentences that say "She was so happy to see her that she called out her name and she smiled as she poured her a glass of wine and..."

I know the spelling and grammar stuff are picky complaints. Maybe if the book had been *interesting*, my attention would have been drawn to the story rather than the typos.

5 out of 5 stars Touched by an Angel.......2000-08-21

Not only was Brimfield a wonderful story, but it touched me in a very personal way. Like Zoe Madden, the main character in the book, I was widowed in my late forties. What blew me away was how well the author captured the guilt and angst connected with trying to form new relationships with men after years of a good marriage. I'm not alone!

Book Description

“A fabulously entertaining combination of Victorian conventions, sensuous undertones, and some seriously evil magic.”
–Charlaine Harris, author of Dead to the World, on Ghosts of Albion: Accursed

Before you can save Albion, you must destroy the poison in its black heart.

William and Tamara Swift’s newfound sorcerous powers as Protectors of Albion pale before the demonic forces threatening Britannia. But William and Tamara have formidable allies in Lord Byron, Queen Bodicea, and Lord Admiral Nelson–England’s noble, notorious Ghosts of Albion.

Responding to a plea from Cornwall, Tamara discovers that the rumors of young women, both human and fairy, vanishing without a trace are horribly true. Instead of hard clues, she uncovers only whispers of witches, infernal abductions, and a pyre of innocents planned for the solstice. Indeed, Tamara has never faced a more dangerous task–for the legendary land of King Arthur’s Camelot also harbors dark, bloody deeds and a waking evil. Soon nothing, not even mighty Albion, will be safe from the deadly peril.

Amber Benson, who immortalized Tara in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Christopher Golden, Bram Stoker Award—winning author of the Shadow Saga, have created a voluptuous, twisted thriller. Based on the BBC Web series that became a smash hit in England, Ghosts of Albion: Witchery brings to life a sizzling, ninteenth century world of fiends, phantoms, and spine-tingling terror.

Praise for Ghosts of Albion: Accursed

“Demons, bodice-ripping passion, and some good old murky London gloom; all one can ask for in a dark night’s reading.”
–Kirkus Reviews

“Equal doses of dark humor and genuine horror.”
–Library Journal

5 out of 5 stars Benson and Golden strike again!.......2007-03-20

Witchery picks up where Accursed left off, with William and Tamara still facing the dilemma of trying to oust the demon Oblis from their father's body. Yet, their duties as Protectors of Albion, Williams impending nuptials to Sophia, and Tamara's tentative flirtations with a certain gentleman caller of course make this all the more difficult.

In Witchery, William is determined to oust the demon Oblis so that his father can attend his wedding. However, when an exhausted old friend, the sprite Serena, comes to the Protectors for help in order to save young faerie girls who have disappeared in a far off town, Tamara and William disagree on where their duties lie. Ultimately Tamara starts off alone to investigate the disappearances of faerie girls and human girls of the village near the wood, getting herself into a situation that's more than one Protector can handle alone.

Finally, William joins his sister, and together they fight to save the abducted girls in a battle that could nearly cost their lives. Yet, even with victory comes defeat.

I was so reluctant to put the book down when I couldn't finish it one sitting. Lord knows I picked it up at every opportunity. Ghosts of Albion is an excellent series, and I only hope it continues.

5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down!.......2007-01-09

"Witchery" is the second novel from Amber Benson (fan favorite "Tara Maclay" from Buffy) and Christopher Golden, in the "Ghosts of Albion" animated series that began on the BBC's website. Like the first novel "Accursed", "Witchery" takes the story to levels that were not possible on the BBC, not just in terms of what could be done technically, but storywise as well. The story is darker, more dangerous and steeped in Victorian era sensuality.
The story continues the exploits of the Swift Siblings, Tamara and William, the newly anointed "Protectors of Albion", the protectors of England's magical soul. Back for more adventures are the epynonymous "Ghosts of Albion" Queen Bodicea, Lord Horatio Nelson, and Lord Byron who defend Albion even after their own deaths. Also returning are their allies, both human and otherwise. The Swifts must return to Cornwall when they learn that young girls, both human and faerie, are disappearing into the night without a trace of their whereabouts, and some have been discovered dead. The local townspeople fear that it might have something to do with the old tales of "witches" in the area dating back to King Arthur's time. Of course they need to figure out what is going on, who is doing it and how to stop it before the Solstice, or certainly a dozen girls will die. In the meantime the siblings still have their demon-possessed father to deal with, the machinations of the Algernon Club, and William's impatient fiancé Sophia.

Once again authors Benson and Golden paint a rich picture on a fertile canvas. Exotic locals such as a faerie stronghold in Cornwall and a Louisiana bayou are contrasted with moments of beauty and sheer horror. Even such mundane locals as the bank William runs is not safe from the darkness in their lives. Benson and Golden mix and match their Gothic feel with fairy tales of England's past. The result is something darker and more dangerous. It is reminiscent of Golden's own "Myth Hunter" series or "The Menagerie" series he co-writes with Tom Sniegoski. Yet again there is something else here that can only be attributed to Ms. Benson's hand in the work. This creates such an alchemy that both authors seemed pushed to do better in the other's presence. "Myth Hunter" is modern noir in feel, "The Menagerie" feels like a gothic ode to superheroes, "Ghosts of Albion" is a Keats poem, dripping with blood and lust.

Where "Accursed" had the required set up to bring in new readers and thus a slower start, the action in "Witchery" begins right away and the tension does not let up till the very end. But it is not all action, there is also character development and carefully crafted plotting. The world made believable because they take the time to make the people in it believable. And students of Victorian age occult history and horror fiction fans should look for some surprise "cameos" as well. The attention paid to research by the authors is in and of itself rewarding; something many modern horror writers fail to adequately do.

In the end you will be like me. Loving this story and desperately wanting more from this world.

5 out of 5 stars magical and enchanting Victorian Gothic thriller .......2006-09-30

When their grandfather dies, Tamara and William Swift become the new protectors of Albion, sworn to protect Britain from her mystical enemies. Although they are new to their positions and must learn how to use their powers, Tamara and William, the "mystic defenders of the soul of England", have the help of the ghosts of Lord Byron, Queen Bodicea and Lord Admiral Nelson.

William is determined to oust the demon Oblis from his father but he shuts out his fiancée Sophia Winchell who has nobody to turn except William's father when she thinks he has temporarily defeated the demon within. Tamara is at Camelford where it is said King Arthur and Mordred fought their fatal battle. Virgin girls from the town and fairies from Stronghold, the border manor between the mortal world and faerie and unseen by human eyes are disappearing and whispers of witches, half humans and half demons are said to be taking them. Tamara knows that they are still alive and will be used in an evil spell to bring forth a malevolence into Albion that she and her allies must prevent at any cost.

This magical and enchanting Victorian Gothic thriller shows the champions of light battling the minions of darkness in a horror tale that pulls the audience into the storyline and keeps them there because there is no break in the action. Surprisingly, in spite of the non stop adventures the characters are fully developed including the ghosts. The amusing Serena, the less than one foot sprite who is always ready to fight, is used as comic relief to lessen tension levels when they threaten to become too overwhelming, seems in a small way genuine.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A QL like no other!.......2006-06-20

This a wonderful QL book, it takes you on Sam's adventure of a lifetime, a roller coaster ride with twists and turns for Sam, Al, Tom, Gooshie and Ziggy. The author has crafted a wonderful book, well worth the time to read it.

4 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2006-06-17

I really enjoyed this book. The story is very interesting and gives the reader an intimate look into Sam's struggle to understand why he is leaping and trying to come to terms with the choices he has made. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys Quantum Leap.

5 out of 5 stars Not average.......2006-06-16

Yes, I admit Mirror's Edge might be not the usual type of QL books. But give it a try with an open mind and I'm sure you'll love it like I do. The author matched the characters very well and if you are a QL fan this is one you don't wanna miss.

1 out of 5 stars Who are these characters.......2006-06-13

I've got a feeling this author wasn't at all familiar with Quantum Leap. The Sam and Al she's created are so far removed from the beloved characters from the TV series you'd think they both have personality disorders. I finished this book dislkike Sam and wondering just how crude Al could be. I had to pop in a couple of the DVD's to remind me of what great characters they were and how much fun QL could be.

3 out of 5 stars What a Shame It's the Last.......2006-06-13

A very good attempt to tie up loose ends of Sam Beckett's leaps through time. Slightly disappointing ending but on the whole a good read

3 out of 5 stars mixed bag, cook at your own risk!.......2006-07-10

I've tried many recipes in her Modern Classic I book and I have to say it's a love hate relationship with her books. They are gorgeous and inspiring to look at (5 stars), but instructions or results can sometimes be disappointing (2 stars). I always recommended her books to friends with a warning (great looking books but the measurement and instructions can be inaccurate, cook at your own risk!). Some instructions are so streamlined to the point of skipping seasoning all together, and dishes came out beautifully to the eyes but are totally bland to the taste. Her Asian recipes are not authentic either, when cross referencing other books with the same recipe.

5 out of 5 stars Very happy with Donna Hay's recipe books........2006-03-23

They are beautiful, they have elegant and -- more important -- easy recipes with an international flair. I am considered a gourmet cook by others...and I couldn't be happier with this and her other books.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2006-02-21

I first discovered Donna Hay's work about two years ago, and I just love her books! The simplicity is blended with her amazing creativity, and every recipe is a knockout! I have always loved simplicity, and I love how it shines through in this book, and isn't lost with the goal to prepare amazing dishes fast. Donna Hay has another winner with this one!

5 out of 5 stars Glad I found Donna Hay!.......2005-12-16

I first saw this cookbook while browsing in a bookstore. It was a beautiful book. Once I opened it, I knew I liked it visually due to so many color photographs and it's beautiful design.

This book is not only visually beautiful and thoughtfully designed, but every single recipe has a photograph! I really liked that. And the focus is completely on the food - nothing else!

The recipes are straight forward and don't call for many ingredients that I don't already keep in stock regularly. They are easy to prepare and full of flavor. The presentation is outstanding, too.

I'm not a plan ahead, casserole type cook at night. I like to whip it up an hour or less before eating. This book does the trick and the reviews from my family are fantastic; even my 13 year old daughter loves them.

I have even entertained at a dinner party using her recipes. The salads are really outstanding. Overall, although her recipes are simple, the effect is powerful. Fresh approach to cooking.

I can't say enough about Donna Hay and the art director of her cookbooks. Visually yummy!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Love this book.......2005-10-12

I've only had this cookbook for a week and I've already made four of the dishes to much success. The recipes are simple but full of flavor. It's not a book that's going to hold your hand and teach you how to boil water, but a book that will show you successful combinations of flavors that lead to a delicious meal.

I especially liked the recipes that had variations and showed how simple changes in ingredients could make a completely different meal. It's prompted me to make slight variations to the recipes based on ingredients I had on hand. Recipes are well suited to entertaining as the finished recipes are unique, easy to prepare and the beautiful photos show how to simply and elegantly plate the dishes.

5 out of 5 stars Very good for undergraduate microbiology class.......2005-06-26

I found this book to help me with studying for the differences between prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

The virus section was also very helpful for my college microbiology class.

For test preparation I used also "Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers" also on Amazon. (author Patrick Leonardi.) This study guide showed me the type of questions asked by college professors of microbiology. This helped a lot because now I knew what to expect.

However, a good knowledge source like "Instant Notes in Microbiology" provided a very good way to first learn the facts.

    5 out of 5 stars A minimalist classic.......2002-07-04

"Instant Notes in Microbiology" is a cheap and cheerful alternative to the proliferation of glossy microbiology textbooks which the North American market has spawned over the last decade. If cheap and cheerful puts you off, it shouldn't. The book is comprehensive, well written, well illustrated (in black and white), and importantly, reasonably priced. Unashamedly concentrating on a non-medical approach to microbiology (although medical microbiology is covered as well), the book lives up to it's title and presents a wide range of material concisely in an extended note format.
So what's the downside? I wonder if students can be weaned away from the Technicolor extravaganzas which compete for their attention, or if lecturers can be persuaded to adopt this minimalist volume as opposed to the competition? Also, while this is an excellent introduction to microbiology, to progress to a deeper understanding of specific topics, students will need to be persuaded to undertake extra reading and research. As we know, back to basics can have it's pitfalls, but put to the purpose for which it is intended, this is the most useful microbiology textbook it has been my pleasure to read for many years.....

5 out of 5 stars Great "refresher" book.......2000-04-11

I have been traditionally schooled as a molecular biologist and had not dealt with microbiology since an intro course in college. When a new job landed me in a bacterial research lab, I panicked. This book has provided me with a great review of microbiology and prompted me to remember things I didn't know that I knew! The text is clearly stated and easy to understand. There are many cross references to other sections of the book which help to tie concepts together in a quick and concise manner. The diagrams are well drawn and very concise. I would recommend this book for those who have had some micro, but feel the need to brush up on the basic concepts.
