great bargain!.......2007-09-05
Okay, so I was on a tight budget and needed a new book...found this in hardcover at the local superstore on the bargain table...what a find! Frances Norris tells a wonderful story of a character coming to grips with the loss of her family, both recently and in the past. The characters are very believable and Norris gives a true feeling of setting without drowning the reader in description. I read this quickly, but still felt satisfied. Very enjoyable read.
Who Can Resist?.......2005-05-30
Love and food are two of my favorite subjects, so how could I resist this book? I was not disappointed. The loss element keeps the story subtantive so that its not just another piece of fluff. The book has hilarious characters (including an overbearing narcissist in an amoeba jumper), but the author treats all with compassion enough to make them full and true. The food styling scenes bring together Hollywood fakery with a delicious disgustingness (photographing motor oil poured on macshed potatoes to resemble a sundae). You can't help cheering on narrator Julia as she navigates the crazies and searches out her soul in a soul-less city. Buy this book right away and enjoy!
candy for the reader's soul.......2005-04-20
Dear Francie:
I just finished your book. What a wonderful story, full of feeling, wisdom, beauty and hope. I really enjoyed the characters, not to mention that you are an incredibly gifted writer style-wise. I lived the whole trip to Sedona as if I was there. And the end is so sexy, yummy, I love it!! All I can say is, keep writing, girl! And like I said, some day we may see the movie "Blue Plate Special", very attractive title to my ears. Thank you for your gift to the world of readers,
a wonderful little novel .......2005-04-01
The only reason that I got this book was because the author went to my high school - so I have to admit that my expectations were not that high. But I really, really enjoyed this book, for the reasons stated so eloquently by other reviewers. It was gripping though sad.
Excellent , insightful portrait of the growing of a soul.......2005-02-25
I loved Julia's story. She finds her inner spark by overcoming her pain, loss, and depression and finding love and forgiveness in unusual ways. The characters are well portrayed and do not lack depth, even the obviously obnoxious figures are seen with irony and compassion at the same time. Highly recommended.

Perplexingly bad.......2005-02-17
Gerrold and Niven are both excellent SF writers. I usually enjoy their books, and both have built up large and high-quality bodies of work. That's why the badness of "Flying Sorcerers" is so baffling. It's like they banged this out in a weekend on a bet.
Much is made of the alleged humor of this novel. Fannish jokes and puns belong at Worldcon, not in a book put out for sale to the general public. Their humor value fails to rise over the level of Granpa's thighslappers. For example, two young alien boys who build a flying machine are called "Wilville" and "Orbur." Ho, ho. My sides! And the gags go downhill from there.
So why 2 stars instead of one? Despite all of its flaws, this is still an amiable book. "Ringworld Throne" aside, both Niven and Gerrold have enough talent to make this book at least somewhat interesting, and to keep the thin plot moving.
If you're interested in these authors, and you should be, pick out almost anything from their extensive catalogs before you purchase this.
Fine work.......2004-05-15
This book is really a great work if you realize what it is, comical sci-fi. And it is not a Niven story but a Gerrold one, if you liked The Trouble With Tribbles episode of Star Trek then this for you.
To dananbethany> It's a pun, As a mauve. Asimov.
An overlooked treasure.......2004-03-26
This is one of the funniest SF books out there. I've got an old tattered copy, and I will order the new edition when it comes out. The book is full of cultural, SF and fandom references. Some might be a little dated (for example, the symbol of the sheep, the horned box, is a reference to a TV with antenna, and how many people have seen one of THOSE lately?), but overall, this book holds up very well.
To answer another reviewer's question would be a spoiler, but anyone who wishes to know who Purple was based on can email me at my nickname at hotmail.
Enjoyable and Fun.......2004-03-15
I love this book - it is funny. I have had the book for at least 10 years but I have yet to figure out - what is Purple's real name? It has something to do with "as a color, shade of purple-gray" and "mauve" but I cannot piece it together. Any help would be appreciated!
A wonderful romp.......2000-06-08
I picked this up (or it was loaned to me) because I was tickled by the title. It's a very entertaining story about a technologically advanced traveller's visit to a fairly primitive world, narrated by one of the primitives. It's an hilarious treatment of Clarke's Law in action, and a colossal pun near the end will delight long-time SF readers enormously.
This is definitely a 'G'-rated title in my book.

Fantasy fiction has a long and honorable history of parodying its own traditions and, in The Flying Sorcerers, Peter Haining has collected a wide range of comic fiction from the genres of fantasy, horror, and science fiction. The 24 stories span the century, from P.G. Wodehouse's hilarious "A Slice of Life," about the inventor Wilfred Mulliner and the dastardly baronet Sir Jasper ffinch-ffarrowmere, through the likes of C.S. Lewis, Kurt Vonnegut, and Mervyn Peake to stories by more recent favorites such as Roald Dahl and, of course, Terry Pratchett, whose story "Turntables of the Night," featuring DEATH, opens the collection.
The stories range from Michael Moorcock's hilarious spoof of heroic fantasy, "The Stone Thing," to more considered twists on conventional themes, as in Angela Carter's story of a reluctant vampire, "The Lady of the House of Love." Arthur C. Clarke even manages to find humor in the end of the world with the closing story "No Morning After."
Haining introduces each story with a brief but informative biography of the writer. This makes the collection an excellent introduction to the wide range of comic fantasy and science fiction writing produced this century. --Elizabeth Sourbut

Truth in Packaging.......2005-09-12
Yes, this book does contain some fine stories. But this book does not contain very many fine COMIC stories. As some of the other reviewers have pointed out, some of the stories are singularly lacking in humour. Yet this book claims to be "a gloriously bizarre and wonderfully varied extravaganza of comic fiction".
You know that stuff that a bull leaves on the ground after a particularly fine meal? This is it, in it's unadulterated form.
Mr Haining should be ashamed of himself.
Like all anthologies, a mixed bag.......2002-03-01
The good thing about short story anthologies is that the bad stories aren't very long. But, then, neither are the good ones!
As other reviewers have noted, the packaging is misleading. Like it's predecessor, Wizards of Odd, the stories as a whole do not live up to the hype on the covers. There are, however, some fine tales to be had. "Danse Macabre" by Mervyn Peake is evocative, although not in the least bit funny. Kurt Vonnegut's "Harrison Bergeron," again singularly lacking in hilarity, is a worthy tale of a true egalitarian society. "The Roaches" by Thomas M. Disch is eerily disgusting, and after reading it you will never look at cockroaches in the same way again.
Really, one can't help but wonder who is responsible for the packaging.
Comic fantasy? I don't think so........1999-04-16
This is a truly excellent collection of short stories, by top-notch authors.
So why only 3 stars? Well, it certainly isn't an anthology of comic fantasy as the cover claims. (Fantasy here is used in its broadest sense, including sci-fi, horror and supernatural stories rather than just swords-and-sorcery.)
The stories range from hilarious (Michael Moorcock's), through amusing, to not in the least bit funny (Angela Carter's). This is my main complaint about the collection - why are serious (even tragic) stories included?
A minor point - I thought the cover art on the copy I have, to be unsuitable. Josh Kirby's work is so much associated with Terry Practhet's work, I think something more neutral would have been better. The fact that it illustrates Pratchett's story didn't help either. Perhaps it was a marketing decision :P
No Flight ,No Sorcery.......1998-12-16
First the good news. Unlike so many theme anthologies,The Flying Sorcerers contains only stories by accomplished writers. There are no atrocious fillers writen by some semi-literate friend of the editor. The bad news is that The Flying Sorcerers does not contain stories about flying or sorcery. The book's cover blurb states'"...these masters of wit heve entertained us with intelligence and humor. Now in this hilarious collection they explore one of our oldest fantasies-the ability to fly." Yet no-one in this book does fly, there is a magician referred to but no sorcerers appear , and several of the stories are not intended to be humerous.
A stellar collection from some extraordinary talents.......1998-11-12
Anthologies are usually difficult to review, as they tend to contain varying levels of talent, however; this collection is an exception -- as it is superb from the first tale to the last. The stories are filled with wit, humor and intelligence and bring together writers you never thought you would see in the same volume. P.G. Wodehouse and Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. with Thomas Disch, Angela Carter, and Terry Pratchett! Amazing and wonderful. Highly recommended.

Abandoned by a cruel fate, lovely, thoroughly modern Dougless Montgomery lay weeping upon a cold tombstone in an English church. Suddenly, as if in answer to her prayers, the most extraordinary man appeared.
He was Nicholas Stafford, Earl of Thornwyck...and according to his tombstone he had died in 1564. Tall, broad of shoulder, attired in gleaming silver and gold, he was magnificent. Yet she could not imagine how strong were the chains that tied them to the past...or the grand adventure that lay before them....

A Man's Opinion.......2007-09-25
Yes I'm a man and I read the book.... (brief pause), now if the teasing has ceased I must tell you I really liked it. Now the real reason I'm admitting my disgrace. Quite frankly, your men might like this one too, and it might just spice up your relationship. I really enjoyed putting myself in the man's shoes, learning about a more manly time, and enjoying the story in general. I didn't even realize the new appreciation of women I was getting. After I read it I kept my enthusiasm to myself (of course), but began feeling more intense about the girl who made me read it. I'm an Airborne Infantryman in the 82nd by the way, not a weakling by any stretch. So if you want to share a book with your man and have something new to discuss over dinner, tell him to do a soldier a favor. Oh yea, ladies you might like it too. As you were
Needs a better heroine .......2007-08-29
I kind of liked this book and other times I wanted to strangle the main character. The book started out so well. She's stuck in a bad relationship and a knight in shining armor comes to save her. There were just so many ways to approach this theme but Jude Deveraux took the really long and painful route.
The main character was so annoying I wanted to stop reading at times and finally did after that weird Calculator scene. I felt bad for Dougless in the beginning and wanted her to find her happiness like in all romance novels. But as I continued to read, I started to feel like she really deserved crappy boyfriends for being so damn stupid. She's too emotional and weak and her only winning characteristic is that she likes to help people. That's it? That's what makes a playboy fall in love with her? She's whiny and she cried too much in the beginning of the book. She's weak and I can't stand her indecisiveness. She doesn't know what she wants and I wanted to hurt her for even considering going back to her lousy boyfriend. She's an idiot. She's a jealous, petty person and she's always muttering sarcastically under her breath. She thinks she's so witty and I just wanted to roll my eyes.
The biggest problem I had with her was that she was pretty selfish. Nicholas needed her help and all she could think about was her own needs and relationships. His past was hundreds of years ago to her, but it just yesterday to him. She acted like the past didn't matter because it was too long ago and was very insensitive to him. I couldn't understand why he would ever be attracted to her. All she can think about half the time is finding a man and getting married. That's like her only goal in life. Anyway, since I really couldn't connect with her or even like her, I didn't like the book very much and eventually stopped reading.
Aside from Dougless, I liked all the other characters and thought the author's writing style was pretty decent. It's the main character that that made the book flawed, which pretty much killed the book for me. I couldn't finish this book and I probably won't read another book from hers seeing how everyone's already said this was her best one. Other people might enjoy this book though if they're into that type of heroine.
Fantastic Story.......2007-08-11
I absolutely loved this book!!!! I have read it several times and have the cassette. I also purchased the cassette for my niece, she loved it then read the book. I know the story is far fetched but it is still fun and the romance is wonderful. Don't we all wish. I don't understand the reviewers who don't like it. I loved it and you won't be sorry you purchased it. Fantastic Beach Read or listen to in the car going down.
Not for me..........2007-07-27
I only picked up this novel because a friend threatened my life--and I nearly ended hers after reading it. I've read a novel from this author before and didn't like her style of writing; it's written with too many facts, and not enough emotion, which is what I look for in a ROMANCE novel. I want to connect with characters, empathize and weep and ache with them since I'll be spending so much time with them anyway--this author does not provide that, and although this tale is interesting, it falls flat due to lack of character/reader affinity.
The heroine seems very likable, although you only get to know her in a single wave-length way, and the hero sounds dashing, although he's sometimes parched, I did like the way the story circled back to the beginning, giving it wholesome synchronicity--but I think that was it.
And the ending...The only word I can think of to describe myself, especially after not enjoying the book so much anyway, is inconsolable.
Could have been great!.......2007-06-14
This was my first book by Jude Deveraux. The first half was great but something happens in the middle that makes it as so the whole story is starting from the beginning and I didn't like how the relationship was rushed during the second half. The ending was very touching. If I wasn't on anti-depressants I probably would have bawled my eyes out. :)
Customer Reviews:
Not real insightful.......2007-01-03
It was written by a service member who experiences a combat environment for the first time. If you have experienced a combat related environment then you will not get much from the book. If you have not, then pick a different book. Also, things have changed drastically since Desert Storm. The troops are experiencing much more in the current conflict.
An interesting perspective on Marine operations.......2003-06-04
I was a M1A1 tank platoon leader with the Army over in Desert Storm, but I picked up a copy of this book to see how the Marines did things over there. This book was a very good book and I was surprised at some of the similarities the Marines had with the Army. The author did a great job, in my opinion, in showing how a company size element operated during wartime. My only complaint is I wish he had included more diagrams depicting various company actions, especially around OP 4 and OP 6. That part kind of got confusing at times trying to figure out where each company in the 1st LAI was located. Overall this is a great book and small unit leaders in the Army would benefit from this book, even though it is about the Marines.
Charlie Company perspective.......2000-04-05
As a member of Charlie Company, it is my opinion that the author was overly critical of Charlie Company. And I did notice one major discrepancy with the participants and their roles in one specific event. However, having said that, it was also a refreshing reminder of names and places I thought I would never forget, but had. I also think it's encouraging to see an NCO take the initiative of publishing something like this, and am curious as to how this reflects on his current enlistment. I really give the book a 4 but felt obligated to defend Charlie.
Outstanding Version of Events.......1999-12-17
I was in the author's unit as well. He depicts the events so realistically it brought back many memories once thought forgotten. I enjoyed the book and think it should be a 'must read' for all those interested in the Gulf War as well as any who served 'over there' specifically in 1st LAI Bn. Check my member page for information in seeing my seb site, lots of LAI Bn photo's.
Outstanding memoir of a Marine NCO on the modern battlefield.......1998-07-07
It is seldom that students of war get a coherent, literate account of the life of a non-commissioned officer in a combat zone. This is just such an account, and, as such, it is required reading for anyone who is interested in small-unit leadership. As the 2nd Platoon Commander in the author's company during the Gulf War, I can testify to the overall accuracy of his account. I have only minor criticisms. First, the author is too kind to some of the leaders of our battalion, men who deserve to be excoriated for their role in the friendly-fire deaths of eleven of our Marines. Second, in several areas of the book he writes with a naive simplicity about the political realities that led to the war. These are minor complaints, however, and they do not detract at all from the important heart of the book. The author admirably captures the difficulties of operating in the desert and the anxieties of a combat leader for the life of his troops. It is full of lessons that any military leader needs to learn, chief among them to train to the limits of endurance and to trust your troops. More than anything, though, the book is a testament to the skill, daring, and courage of the backbone of the Marine Corps: the Marine NCO. Tip of the Spear is much more than a moving and entertaining memoir of the Gulf War. It is a textbook for small-unit leaders. Read it.

Not Quite What I Expected, But Very Enjoyable.......2005-03-18
Well, to be honest, I'm not sure what I expected when I checked this out from the library, but it sounded interesting, so I thought I'd take a look. The story was fairly slow-going at first. In fact, I would say that it wasn't until about 1/2-way through the book that the plot actually got 'moving' so-to-speak. That's not to say that it wasn't interesting, it just seemed like there was lots of information that wasn't really connected to the plot. There were also times where I felt that certain scenes were written just to display the authors' historical knowledge, which isn't something I find particularly appealing in novels.
Also, although touted as a historical fantasy, this book is probably about 80% historical, 15% fantasy and 5% alternate reality. Honestly, if I had known nothing about Elizabethan England when I read this I would have been completely lost and, while reading, I still felt out of the loop occasionally. There were a lot of historical names and places, and it was difficult keeping them straight in my head, especially at the beginning. I can't really recommend this book to anyone who doesn't have at least a little previous knowledge of this time period, but I can say that it would be worth it to do some research for the sole purpose or reading it.
If you don't want to read about the time period, take a look at these two movies: Elizabeth w/ Cate Blanchett and Shakespeare in Love w/ Gwyneth Paltrow. They will give you a historical basis to work off of and both will give you most, if not all, of the names you need to know.
Like fantasy? Like Elizabethan England? This is for you!.......2001-06-20
This is a very well-structured, well-written book set in an alternate version of Queen Elizabeth I's reign. The settings are finely drawn, the characters are engaging, and the plot is gripping. I reread this book about once a year just for the pleasure of it, and I snapped up this hardcover when it came out. If you like alternate history and fantasy, and don't mind them mixed together, read this book. If you just want to read about people living in Elizabethan England, read this book. And if you just have to have any book with Shakespeare as a character... you, too, have some reading ahead of you.
I still like it!.......1999-03-12
I'm the cover illustrator, and I don't always like everything I read. Often, even if I liked a story the first time, I don't like it when I have to read it about the fifth time to check on the color of someone's shirt. Or I start noticing the lapses in historical detail or logic or characterization.
This book I still read for pleasure, even after I finished the cover. I read a lot of alternate history, and this surely ranks among the best.
Historical fantasy as it should be!.......1998-08-23
This is the best work of historical fantasy, and one of the best works of historical fiction, which I have ever read. Although the universe (an alternate history Elizabethan England where magic works and where Sydney and Marlow survived the events which killed them in our time line) is fantasy, the approach is basic science fiction "what if", extrapolated on a magical rather than physcial technology. Rather than overlaying modern concepts of magic onto their characters and history, the authors present magic as it was understood by the various classes of Tudor England, and in so doing create a world that feels like reality and avoid the one-dimensionality common to much contemporary fantasy. All this, and a great read, too.

Trade paperback. From rear cover: What happens when Christians try to let the stories reflect their Christian faith? Many different kinds of stories appear, as is evident by the selections of Christian fiction included in this volume. Some stories, in one way or another, show a world in need of Christ the Savior. Others point more explicitly to people who found Christ as the answer to life's problems and riddles. You will find stories by well-known Christian writers and stories by lesser known Christian writers. But each, without being intrusive, reveals a faith both strong and true.

Salvation for the reading list........2006-01-29
An entertaining tale, with more to come according to the author, concerning a small cable of Christians who fight the forces of evil in Houston, TX with Armor forged from the light of God and His word as their strength and weapons. The format of the book seems to indicate that it was originally intended for a visual format, and yet that only makes it easier for the reader to visualize the actual happenings. With the exception of the use of the word 'coarse' instead of 'course' the book delivers a solid message of the value of faith and the inherent strength (one of the active characters is met with strong temptation) of the human spirit.

Silverton, who hails from the renowned Los Angeles bakery for which this book is named, goes back to square one in Breads for the La Brea Bakery: the yeast. While commercial yeast may work, using it doesn't really get to the essence of good bread or good bread making. Her book describes the two-week process required to create a starter the old-fashioned way. Once that is done, there are breads, pretzels, bagels, and a host of other good things to bake.
Book Description
The owner and chef of L.A.'s famous and successful La Brea Bakery reveals her magical recipes, adapted for home bakers. A "How to" Sourdough Book.......2007-09-15
I picked up a used copy of this book in the late 1990s at Half Price Books for less than 4 dollars. I had just read the ingredients label on my store bought "sour dough" bread and discovered the sour ingredient was vinegar. This got me interested in real sourdough. Nancy was one of the featured bakers in the PBS series and companion book "Baking With Julia." The last time I checked, this series and Nancy's episodes from the series, is still available to view online at Julia Child's PBS website. If you buy the book, you may thus be able to go online and view the video of how she makes her starter and bakes some bread. Or you may wish to first view the video to see if this is something you wish to tackle.
This is just about a 100% hardcore sourdough bread baking book. The first thing you learn is how to make the starter (this takes well over a week). A starter is made by capturing air borne yeast. Once you get the starter down, this starter is used and reused by feeding and replenishing to make bread in an ongoing cycle. The breads in the book take from a day and a half to more than 3 days to make! This sounds far worse than it actually is. The bread is actually built over several days in stages by taking some starter and adding flour and water and fermenting slowly and then adding more flour and water, etc. Actual labor time is not that great. Making bread becomes a matter of scheduling.
The most important step is making your own starter. This book has great instructions and photos. I followed them as given and got a very lively starter as a result--her instructions WORK. Once you get this down, you then can tackle the breads, which start with a white, wheat, or rye starter and are built from some basic recipes.
Nancy is the real deal when it comes to sourdough including winning the San Francisco first prize award. A few years ago her bakery was sold and I have seen some La Brea breads at my local Costco.
Best book on baking sourdhough breads!.......2007-05-12
I am pretty new baker. I have most of the books out there now (maybe about 15 bread baking books or more) and I can say that I have baked consistently amazing loaves of bread from this book. They are all sourdough, and most of the breads take 2 days from start to finish. So, if you are looking for some quick bread recipes this is not the book for you. If you are looking to learn a lot about artisanal sourdough bread and want to take the time to bake breads better than some of the best bakeries out there - then BUY THIS BOOK!
Its a disappointment..........2007-04-18
This book was written like a novel, alot of description and lacking pictures (only the finished products on the back of the book covers and some (less than 10) between pages, its a good book for those that like to cuddle in front of a fire place with a hot coco. Also a good book for those with good imagination. For those that want color pictures to show you every step of the way (like Wayne Gisslen), sorry, this is not the book. There are many great recipes (that is the only reason that prevented me from giving it a one star), but like I said,....its almost like a recipe book written by Stephen King. Readers should have some basic knowledge about baking before reading this book. Definitely not for beginner!
The best book available on wild yeast bread baking.......2007-04-07
If you can't make great bread using this book, don't blame the book. I've been baking bread at home for almost 20 years and I have acquired a significant library on bread baking. At this point I can make bread that is largely indistinguishable from the crusty, chewy loaves being made by artisan bakers in my community and that includes a bakery with a wood fire, beehive oven owned by a French couple. Much of what I know about baking with wild yeasts comes from this book. If you want to bake great, wild yeast breads, this book will supply all the information you need if you just take the time to really study it and learn from it. Don't think of it as a recipe book. If you've baked a lot with commercial yeast, be prepared to abandon much of what you know. If you are in a hurry or if whatever you bake has to come out right the first time you try, you will only find frustration here. This is a wonderful book for those who want to take their bread baking to a higher level, and what it asks in return is a willingness to learn how to work with the slow tempo of a natural process.
Great information, recipies and layout confusing.......2007-04-06
I recommend this book for information on bread baking and the La Brea bakery. The layout of the recipies, however, is not as clear as many other cookbooks on bread. If you can manage to get through a recipe, the results are good. Silverton does have a wide range of artisan style breads and also a few that are enhanced with things like red pepper.
