At the end of Reconstruction, the old order reasserted itself, to varying degrees, throughout the former Confederate states. This period--Redemption, as it was called--was crucial in establishing the structures and alliances that dominated the Solid South until at least the mid-twentieth century.

Williams takes us back to the decades after the US Civil War, to look at how the Texas Democratic party struggled to cope with Reconstruction. Not a wonderful picture. We see how the Democrats strenuously opposed civil rights for Negroes. This is the main theme throughout the book. To build up their support amongst whites, the Democrats engaged repeatedly in racist demagogy. Which also included diatribes against Mexicans and Latino citizens.
But not just that. Much of the book documents the maneuverings against the federal government, and many ways, often successful, in which the Democrats took control of the judiciary and local governments.
There are also other threads running through the book. As in fighting native tribes resisting incursions into their lands.

Although I did find this book a very interesting read, I thought it was somewhat lacking in information on the ancient history of this potent symbol (and it is ancient). It does contain a brief overview of the places and people whom the swastika had meaning (basically everyone), but hardly enough to satisfy me (but this is a personal preference).
What is not left to be desired is the imagery this book contains, which I feel, is well worth the purchase price. However at least one mistake is made in attributing an image to its owner (CD for the band The Residents that is wrongly attributed to Sacred Reich).
I have always believed the swastika a powerful, and much maligned human symbol, and I for one am ready to discard its recent history as a disturbing episode in an otherwise brilliant career.
Remember: It's not the sign that counts, it's how you use it!

Here's three good things about this book.
First, the 157 pages of text provide a comprehensive overview of the history of the you-know-what-symbol. The swastika. There's a lot of interesting revelations. For example, the swastika appears to be the oldest symbol uncovered anywhere, and is found in just about every culture and civilization, everywhere and at any time in History. I mean, it was everywhere!
Second, the book provides dozens of reproductions of the swastika, in a myriad of variants, including on cigar labels, poker chips, cards, as a shoulder patch for the U.S. Army (1918), and on a monthly American magazine for young girls, entitled: "The Swastika: Written, Issued and Read by The Girl's Club."
Finally, the author is a graphic designer, and a darn good one. The book itself--the size, the color, the paper, the setting of the text, the brilliant and varied reproductions--these all delighted me, and I hope they delight you.
Not only that, consider that the bookjacket has to be one of the most extreme, hardcore bookcovers in history. The cover shows a black swastika, on a white circle, on a red background. One glance at it, and you'll know why the swastika is the most powerful symbol ever created. Forever sinister, the swastika today is the only symbol that you can write with a pen on the border of the daily paper, that has acquired the status of "genetically evil." Those scribblings on the notepad--they will never be redeemed! Hollywood is calling.

Symbol beyond Redemption? by Steven Heller.......2004-02-22
Steven Heller's book about the "Symbol Beyond Redemption?" is very informative. It needs updating with more recent information about the topic addressed. For example, the notorious flag symbol of the National Socialist German Workers Party, although an ancient symbol, was altered for use as overlapping S-letters for 'socialism' under the National Socialist German Workers' Party. It was deliberately turned 45 degrees counter clockwise and always oriented in the S-direction. Similar alphabetic symbolism is still visible as Volkswagen logos. American socialists (e.g. Edward Bellamy teamed with the Theosophical Society) bear some blame for evolving the shape as alphabetical symbolism for socialism, adopted later by German socialists. Edward Bellamy was the author of an international bestseller that launched the nationalism movement, and his book was translated into every major language, including German. American socialists also share some blame for the notorious stiff-arm salute of German National Socialism. Edward was cousin to Francis Bellamy, author of the Pledge Of Allegiance (1892) and the early Pledge used the straight arm salute, and the Pledge was used at civic meetings of the Theosophical Society, Freemasons and other groups before it spread to Germany. Francis and Edward were both self-proclaimed socialists in the Nationalism movement and they promoted military socialism. They wanted government to take over all schools and impose robotic chanting to flags. The Pledge's early salute was not an ancient Roman salute, and the 'ancient Roman salute' myth came from the Pledge. All of the above are modern discoveries by the nation's leading authority on the Pledge of Allegiance, the author of "Pledge of Allegiance Secrets." People were persecuted for refusing to perform robotic chanting to the national flag at the same time in the USA and Germany (to the American flag, and to the German symbol flag). The socialist dogma led to the socialist Wholecost: 60 million dead under the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics; 50 million under the Peoples' Republic of China; 20 million under the National Socialist German Workers Party. It might be the most tragic part of world history.
Terrifying Visual Anthropology.......2000-09-20
What a pleasure it is to experience the work of an author who has total command over his material. In a slender 160 pages, the author explains -- in both words and pictures -- the mythology, anthropology, abuse, and endurance of this fascinating and lurid symbol. This is one of the most interesting books on fascist regalia written in recent years.

James D. Russell, Beyond the Rim: From Slavery to Redemption.......2005-01-15
This book, by James D. Russell, is billed as a biography of Caroline Terry, an ex-slave who lived to the age of 108. The narrative "is based on Caroline's recollections of events as related to the author, her great-grandson, then a 12 year old boy ..." (at p. [ix]). Seventy years later, Russell has "re-created scenes and conversations consistent with Caroline's recollections as told to me" and has "used my imagination, and my understanding of black people's lives in those days, to create scenes and dialogue that fleshes out Caroline's life story ..." (at pp. [ix-x]). While this approach may improve readability, it detracts from the historical usefulness of the information conveyed, as it is not possible to tell what has been reorganized and what added.
One sample of the problems which result is the coverage of "plantation children," the issue of master-slave unions. While this practice has been documented elsewhere, Russell's account suffers from a failure to directly name the plantation owner (it appears to be a James A. Ryan or Rhine- see pp. 43, 55), as well as a confusion in dates. The Preface states that Caroline's son, Theodore, was born in 1858 and a daughter, Florence, in 1868 (at p. ix). In the text, however, Theodore's birth appears to occur in 1863 (see pp. 21-23), while Russell states that the Master's last visit to the cabin was in the spring of 1865 (at p. 28). Some may also be taken aback by the use of dialect ("' Heah ah is, Marse, I'se coming in now'"- at p. 2, for example), although I am willing to give Mr. Russell the benefit of the doubt on knowing how his great-grandmother talked. While accounts of "jumping the broom" (at pp. 34-35) and black music (at p. 41) are of interest, there is no way to tell whether they actually occurred or have been borrowed.
Ironically, what really saves the book are the oral interviews concerning James Russell's own life in Sperryville (at pp. 69-90). While these have been edited, they represent an eloquent account of growing up black in segregated Virginia, and are just as interesting as, and less adulterated than, Russell's memories of Caroline Terry.

FUNNY, INTELLIGENT AND ENTERTAINING.......2007-02-01
I read this book in 1992, and it has stayed with me ever since. I remember reading it one night and ended up staying up all night to finish it. The story is set in the 1950's in Australia -- the writer obviously knows her material here, and we are let into a world that is both mysterious and exotic for readers. It's a tale of a young girl growing up in a strict Catholic family -- she goes through the normal trials and tribulations of the teenage phase, but it's the voice of the narrator here (in first person) and her quirky observations of the adult world that makes this book such a delight. Glad that it's back in print. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

The author takes the reader through the act of murder as recalled by Allan Hurd, as well as the arrest, court appearances, trial, and conviction of Bender and Lucas. He describes in graphic detail their demeanour from the time of their arrest through their entire trial. He follows their lives in prison, including a hostage taking incident participated in by Lucas resulting in the unfortunate death of one of the hostages. In this book, Montgomery is equally if not more critical of that piece of legislation and the procedures that are followed that permit a convicted inmate to apply to the court for a hearing by a jury where he must only convince two–thirds of them on a balance of probabilities that his eligibility time for parole should be reduced. At such a hearing, affidavits, statements and reports referring to the inmate's life and behaviour in the penitentiary are presented to the jury by the applicant inmate. It is this legislation, as well as the politicians who fashion and support it, that Montgomery is highly critical of. He contends that it is this legislation that permitted Lucas on February 26, 1990, to proceed with such an application, following which the jury recommended that Lucas' parole eligibility time be reduced from 20 years to "forthwith." This book is an absolute must have for any reader! I must warn you that it does have curse words and other mature content in the poetry, but when you don't look at the words on the page, but at the meaning behind them, the emotions that they have put into words is absolutly astonishing!
Good cross section of modern spoken word/fiction.......1998-08-10
I am a contributor (one of 75 or so) so therefore biased, but I think this book is a great compilation. Having attended an endless number of open mikes, I find about two or three pieces at each one that really speaks to me. This book is like having all those moments mushed together in one place. There are moments of pure grace and moments I could do without, but overall, it's a great read and an honest look at pop culture. With luminaries like Bukowski and Lifshin and a pretty neat interview with Allen Ginsberg, I think Scream When You Burn is required reading for the modern poet.

If I recall correctly, this book is a compilation of views from various Sedonans. There are a few morsels of info regarding UFO/military activity in the area, but most of it is lightweight.

Great healthy food ideas.......2007-02-06
I have made several of the receipes from this cookbook. All came out great. Instructions are easy to follow and the ingredients are healthy. I checked it out of the library before I bought it and now feel it was well worth the investment.
One of my favorite cookbooks!.......2006-09-03
I've been a fan of Eating Well magazine for years, so it's no surprise to me that they would produce such an exciting, delicious and usable cookbook. Every recipe is based on real food, not the Frankenfoods that many dieters are used to. The recipes do take some time to prepare, but the outcome is well worth it.
The recipes are perfect for most diet plans, as well as anyone not on a diet that just wants to eat better. South Beachers can use this book, so I'm not sure why the previous reviewer gave it a poor review, especially since she hadn't even browsed the book. Some of the recipes do use white sugar, but there are plenty of recipes in this cookbook to qualify for the South Beach and Sonoma Diets. Weight Watchers are in luck because every recipe includes calories, fat, and fiber counts, so they can easily calculate the points.
This is a cookbook that I would recommend to anyone, not just dieters. Every recipe focuses on flavor and high quality ingredients, and just happen to be reduced calorie. My favorite recipe would be the Mediterranean Burgers with Olive Ketchup. Had it not been for this recipe, I would have never tried millet, a very nutritious whole grain.
I refer to Eating Well magazines and cookbooks at least once a week, usually more often. I've never been disappointed in one of their recipes. I highly recommend this cookbook :)
Great resource.......2006-04-19
If you care about the nutritional value of your meals, but don't want to sacrifice flavor this book is a gem. So far I have made several different recipes and I have been pleased with the results. I recommend adding extra herbs and spices for those of you who are "flavor-junkies" like me.
The baked goods are not super sweet, but at least they are good and you can eat them relatively guilt-free. Buy the book, experiment a little, and feel good about what you're eating!

This book is exactly what is needed for people who are committed to changing their eating habits. The contents are well organized, the logistics are clear, the recipes provide pertinent nutritional information, are easy to follow and give excellent results. As a physician that I am I will most certainly recommend it to patients and friends. Congratulations on the team work!
