Book Description

A marvelous novel by one of Spain's most important contemporary authors, in which a clerk in a Barcelona office takes us on a romping tour of world literature.

In Bartleby & Co., an enormously enjoyable novel, Enrique Vila-Matas tackles the theme of silence in literature: the writers and non-writers who, like the scrivener Bartleby of the Herman Melville story, in answer to any question or demand, replies: "I would prefer not to." Addressing such "artists of refusal" as Robert Walser, Robert Musil, Arthur Rimbaud, Marcel Duchamp, Herman Melville, and J. D. Salinger, Bartleby & Co. could be described as a meditation: a walking tour through the annals of literature. Written as a series of footnotes (a non-work itself), Bartleby embarks on such questions as why do we write, why do we exist? The answer lies in the novel itself: told from the point of view of a hermetic hunchback who has no luck with women, and is himself unable to write, Bartleby is utterly engaging, a work of profound and philosophical beauty.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Playful philosophy.......2005-11-09

As a long-time admirer of Melville's Bartleby, I loved this book. I loved its celebration of refusal and devolution. A novel that refuses to be a novel, the book is an especially good read for aging writers who may not have "fulfilled their creative potential" as the self-help goes. Though most of us know of the long silences of writers like Salinger, I had little idea how many writers have gone silent and for the most subtle of reasons.

5 out of 5 stars To write or not to write........2005-02-15

Bartleby and Co. is an excellent entrance to get into the extremely rich literary work of the Barcelonian writer Enrique Vila-Matas. Described as a "series of footnotes of an invisible -unexistent- book", it compiles, following a labirinthic order, the observations of an early-retired writer about a pretty recurrent phenomenon among writers that he calls the "negating literature" (literatura del no). Mixing reality and fantasy, Vila-Matas gives account of the most interesting cases of writers, like Bartleby or Salinger, who stopped writing for good at some point in their lives. It is also a marvelous tour through contemporary literature and, at a higher level, it can be seen as a metaphor of abandonment and negation that explores the reasons we have for writing and telling stories and also as a homage to all those brave men and women who have decided to devote their live to writing, who have taken such a dangerous (and slippy) path.

A great follow up for this book, if you liked it, is "El Mal de Montano" (I'm not sure it's translated to english already).

              She is called . . . and chosen . . .

Invaded by a cavalcade of vicious dragons, the villagers of St. Renan are snatched up when they venture beyond the walls.

Yet Rhiana Tassot -- who senses the dragons from a distance, who determines their attack scent from a mating scent, who is blessed with the instincts of a dragon, who dares stand before the fiery beasts without flinching -- cannot use her skills to defend her home. For the lord of St. Renan forbids her to track the beasts -- not in fear for her safety, but by some twisted desire to protect the dragons.

So conflict rages within and without the village and a long-held secret begins to stir beneath their very feet. Rhiana's knowledge of dragons is no accident -- and others begin to suspect why . . .

Without going over the plot (already well articulated by the other reviewers and Amazon staff), please find my opinion here only.

My advice is to skip this one! I had previously read SERAPHIM which was most enjoyable. But, this particularly story falls far short of the quality of Hauf's first book.

Although the character of Rhiana would seem to be interesting by description (a tall Amazonian dragonslayer with tumbling garnet-colored tresses... a gold eye and a green one... a woman capable in her warrior skills, yet unsure of her feminine attributes...), she actually is not compelling at all.

Bored at reading the first fourth of the book, I had to do my "stinky book trick" which is to jump to the end and read the last few chapters. (If the ending looks better than I expect, I will go back and read the rest.) Unfortunately, except for her eventual meeting with Seraphim & Co. at the end, the culmination of the story seemed just as weak and predictable. So, I closed the book and piled it on my "already been read" pile and didn't waste another minute of my time.

I had just finished reading Michelle Sagara's CAST IN COURTLIGHT which was infinitely more compelling, so perhaps the blandness of this story came in the comparison for me. But, if I can help another reader save a few bucks in the bookstore when they pick up one of this slightly bigger and more costly paperbacks, I like to do so.

So my advice is to skip this one... look at the pretty cover art at the store... skim the book jacket overview... peek at the last chapter... and then put it down and move on. If you haven't read SERAPHIM, do so because that is a much better read. But, save your $ on this one!

5 out of 5 stars exciting romantic fantasy .......2006-04-25

In 1437 in the French village of St. Renan, the residents have become complacent because no dragons have come seeking the vast hoard in years. That abruptly changes when a flock of dragons descend upon the village killing anyone outside when they flew over the site. The village has a dragon slayer Rhiana Tassot, a warrior who is not afraid to enter the dragon's lair.

She differs from her neighbors as she can belch fire and is not burned when fires strikes her. Rhiana has no explanation for these phenomena and even her own mother keeps a distance from her changeling daughter. With so many dragons in the area, she welcomes fellow dragon slayer Macarius Fleche, the son of the father who trained Rhiana in dragon fighting. In an odd development Baron Guiscard forbids the two slayers from killing any dragons. Unless they disobey his orders, many innocent people will die; but by doing so Rhiana and Macrius would become outlaws.

In a society that thinks women are weak, Rhiana proves they can be warriors too, just ask SERAPHIM or GOSSYMYR. There is plenty of action in this exciting romantic fantasy even as the heroine has doubts about the love of her life which adds a charming subplot to a fantasy that can be too tense at times. RHIANA needs to know more about her heritage as she can sense when dragons are near by the tingling in her blood. She makes the tale soar as Michele Hauf provides an entertaining tale that will elate her numerous fans.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting fantasy romance.......2006-04-20

Some men can't cope with strong women. That is as true in Rhiana's 15th century France as it is today. But strong women will love reading about Rhiana, even if they have never hunted a dragon in their entire lives.

Michele Hauf tells another enchanting fantasy tale in Rhiana, the third in her Changeling series (after Seraphim and Gossamyr).

For all her strength and unique gifts, and her determination to protect her family and friends from the dragons attacking her village, Rhiana struggles with how different she is, more comfortable in armored tunic than in gowns, not at all feminine like her half-sister Odette. She wonders if she'll ever be courted and kissed.

Mysteries abound in St. R?nan - who is Lady Anne, Lord Guiscard's not-all-there wife? Why does Ulrich, Rhiana's first stepfather, suddenly return after a 20-year absence? And who is Rhiana's father?

The tale ends with answers to all these mysteries. The resolution of Rhiana's wonderings comes with kisses and courtship from the only man who could truly appreciate her for all she is, Macarius Fleche, the slayer.

Adams, Robert: "Prologue" - This overview of the fair at Ithkar outlines its evolution from a simple religious festival, honoring the first appearance of the Three Lordly Ones in their Divine Egg, to a weeks-long fair. The temple makes good money, providing well-kept, well-policed fairgrounds.

Carter, Lin: "The Goblinry of Ais" - Lady Ais is a great beauty, whose fame has spread far over the years. But now she's interested in something more dangerous than politics...

Cherryh, C.J. "To Take a Thief" Sphix, like the small sly animal that's his namesake, is a 'good' thief: he never takes anything whose loss'll hurt the victim. But no one can ever keep to one level of evil...

Clayton, Jo: "Jezeri and Her Beast Go to the Fair and Find More Excitement Than They Want" When Jezeri's family took in Old 'Un, Tanu (a tiny little thing, whose like had never before been seen), crept out of his gear and won Jezeri's heart. Unfortunately, someone at the fair appears to know more about Tanu than Jezeri does...

Llywelyn, Morgan: "Fletcher Found" - The narrator, a "cuckoo's chick" among the mountain forge-folk, has in his loneliness become convinced that he's a foundling of those beings from another world, the Three Lordly Ones.

Mathews, Patricia: "Well Met in Ithkar" Master jeweller Corielle is reestablishing herself after what she can only now call 'the fortunes of war'. She'll never forget the voice of the man who ordered the beating that blinded her, even years later at Ithkar fair. But how can she formally identify him by voice alone?

Mayhar, Ardath: "Esmene's Eyes" Esmene's magnificent embroidery is magical - when she pours her very life into it. Despite her illness (she's slowly dying of internal injuries), she answers the priests' summons the fair, to wield her talents one last time.

Norton, Andre: "Swamp Dweller" Kara is one of the Quatka, animal trainers whose companions are Second-Kin to them, cherished and communicated with. Even the ugly, abused reptile Kara found in a beast seller's cage at the fair deserves consideration. But Kara feels that he has hidden potential...If you like this story, try Norton's _Moon of Three Rings_.

Sampson, Judith: "Qazia and a Ferret-Fetch" The evil wizard Chond is more than a match for any hero, and his ferret-fetch familiar will never let a prisoner escape. But when blind Hoel fetches up at the Joyous Goblet in Ithkar, tavernmistress Qazia won't let her guest be dragged away. (The ferret-fetch, by the way, is an interesting character in his own right.)

Schlobin, Roger C.: "For Lovers Only" Brother Jerome "the Huncher" piously wears a hair shirt - concealing his thefts from the temple treasury. He was driven half-crazy (and into the monastery) when his lover dumped him *very* brutally for a richer man, and he's financing a suitable revenge.

Schutz, J.W. "Dragon's Horn" - Tonya's father left only debts and the Enchanted Doll Show. While the dolls move by enchantment, they need human voices; Tonya hires strangers to fill out the parts of Dragon and King, while Lord Caum licks his chops, waiting to enslave Tonya if she can't pay off the debt after the fair...

Schwartz, Susan: "Homecoming" Andriu fled his novitiate at the Temple of the Three Lordly Ones fifteen years ago. As a dream-singer, able to shape reality with his songs, he's been in and out of scrapes for years. Now suffering from lung-fever, he's come home. But someone has far worse trouble than he; Vassilka needs an exorcism for an unborn child...

Springer, Nancy: "The Prince out of the Past" Even spirits are drawn to Ithkar Fair.

Waters, Elisabeth: "Cold Spell" Eirthe the candlemaker refused a Thotharn priest's request to make candles in the likeness of wealthy merchants. He retaliated by cold-cursing her: her candles will no longer burn. But she can't prove he's running a protection racket, so how can she make a living?

3 out of 5 stars Fantasy story collection.......2006-12-15

Magic in Ithkar - A word to long time Fantasy readers [and fans of Andre Norton] we are treading on very familiar ground here - ancient visitors, priest and temples, legends of an ancient war, good magic, bad magic, intelligent animals etc, etc. If done adequately, spiffed up and handled with TLC these Fantasy elements can assist the authors to hang a good story on - and entertain the reader. I found the story quality quite good - that is entertaining. My real grip with this book is that several of the stories made references to people and places that the authors must of assumed the reader had prior knowledge of. Perhaps the background information concerning Ithkar provided to the authors was considerably more detailed than that printed in the introduction. My search found four Ithkar books all edited by Adams and Alice Mary Norton aka Andre Norton. Since the concept of Ithkar and the yearly fair could generate four books of stories perhaps one of the authors was motivated to write a related novel.

4 out of 5 stars Come to the fair at Ithkar.......2002-11-19

I believe there were only four 'Magic in Ithkar' volumes, which is a shame because Norton and Adams did a great job of soliciting (and editing?) these commonly-themed fantasy shorts. Each of the four collections has the same prologue by Robert Adams, which explains how the fair originated in Ithkar (a religious anniversary turned pilgrimage), the set-up (temple, campgrounds for the merchants, docks and canals for the riparian traffic, etc.), and the difficulties encountered on a pilgrimage or trading voyage to Ithkar (Death Swamp, dragons, outlaw wizards). All weapons must be surrendered before entering the fair and wizards are discouraged from glamorizing shoddy goods with their spells. Of course, as at any large festival, the fair at Ithkar has its share of rogues, piratical merchants, bravos, potion-makers and witches, troupes of entertainers (not a few of them turning tricks), and gullible pilgrims.

                    A sampling of stories:

"The Goblinry of Ais" by Lin Carter - a rather pedestrian story on the theme of 'be careful what you wish for,' especially if the genie in the rock happens to be a goblin.

"To Take a Thief" by C.J. Cherryh - A young apprentice-thief's master hangs from a gibbet down near the docks. How will he survive at a fair already overrun by thieves, and worse?

"Jezeri and her Beast Go to the Fair and Find more Excitement than They Want." by Jo Clayton - this story about a young girl and her mysterious telepathic pet is written like a chapter taken out of a novel. It's a 'day in the life of' rather than a story with a true ending. I checked Jo Clayton's bibliography to see if Jezeri and her Beast came whole-cloth out of a novel, but didn't find anything to indicate that it did.

"Fletcher Found" by Morgan Llywelyn - One of my favorites. A young fletcher is robbed of his wares on the way to Ithkar, but manages to replenish part of his stock of arrows with the help of a peculiar wild magic. His new arrows are not precisely saleable.

"Well Met in Ithkar" by Patricia Mathews - A blind jewelry maker is fighting long odds when she identifies a priest of Thotharn as the man who ruined her family.

When I first read it, I had my doubts because I had never heard of it before. But as I was reading it, I could not stop; I had to know what was going to happen to the characters in the next chapter.

Each author contributes a wonderful tale that is set in the magical place of Ithkar. Just when I think I know what will happen, the story takes an unexpected turn into a new avenue of adventure. This book makes me want to read all the other Magic in Ithkar books.

Of course, as at any large festival, the fair at Ithkar has its share of rogues, piratical merchants, bravos, potion-makers and witches, troupes of entertainers (not a few of them turning tricks), and gullible pilgrims.

A sampling of the fourteen stories in this volume:

"The Clockwork Woman" - Ann R. Brown
A mechanical doll is so deceptively life-like that when she is exhibited at the fair, a wealthy man in the audience tries to buy her. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) for him, there's a real woman concealed within the doll. She is a dwarf and has fallen in love with her tall, beautiful mechanical persona. When she persuades her friend and fellow dwarf to take his place within a newly constructed mechanical man, she learns an important lesson in love.

"First Do No Harm" - Mildred Downey Broxon
Young Lithras is a character who could have been lifted from one of Norton's own fantasies--a young, untrained witch who is enslaved, then kills her master and escapes to the fair in Ithkar. She competes for a job as a body healer to a wealthy nobleman, and confesses to one of the other competitors: "I am no anointed healer, but a maimed thing, unfinished."--Doesn't that sound like a character from the pen of the Gandalf Grand Master of Fantasy herself? This story also has one of Norton's ambiguously romantic endings.

                    "Honeycomb" - Esther M. Friesner
Author Esther Friesner has also written and published many fantasy series, including the Twelve Kingdoms ("Mustapha and his Wise Dog"), New York ("New York by Knight"), and Tim Desmond ("Gnome Man's Land") novels. "Honeycomb" is one of the most magical stories to come out of Ithkar, and involves a mysterious candlemaker and her effect on a young woodcarver. A truly sweet, funny story in which an unfaithful lover is changed into a bear and a young not-so-maidenly maiden is forced by an enchanted candle to confess her urgent need for a husband.

If you are searching for good sword & sorcery short stories, you might find exactly what you crave at Ithkar's magical fair.

5 out of 5 stars "You'll notice more light and healthy selections in this book...".......2006-05-04

Every recipe published by Southern Living in 2004--traditional and seasonal southern recipes, including variations on grits, ribs, grilled specialties, congealed salads, catfish, and many pound cakes--share pages with lighter fare--Braised Tuscan Pork Loin (with cannelini beans), Salmon with Lemon and Olive Oil, and Shrimp with Yogurt-Cucumber Sauce. The dessert favorites for which Southern Living is famous--the pound cakes, including the gorgeous cover feature (Cream Cheese-Coconut-Pecan Pound Cake), the chocolate specialties (like Rudolph's Chocolate Truffle Cake) and the creme brulees, like the Pina Colada Creme Brulee here--continue, but more attention is paid to less fat-laden desserts, such as the Creamy Lime Cakes (individual versions of old-fashioned pudding cakes), and a lower fat Strawberry-Lemon Cheesecake.

As the wife of someone who underwent successful triple bypass surgery two years ago, I've long given up the pound cakes with their 254 g. of saturated fat, which is the fat content of the gorgeous-looking pound cake on the cover (which serves ten). Cardiologists recommend that a healthy person eat no more than 20 g. of saturated fat in a DAY, and cardiac patients should limit themselves to only 10 g. of saturated fat per day.

Though the Healthy and Light recipes are a relatively small percentage of total (51 recipes in total), they are well tested and delicious, and most of them do not taste "lowfat." Some recipes included among the general recipes are also low-fat, though there are no nutritional values for them listed here to indicate that--only the "light and healthy" recipes include nutritional information. The recipes using yogurt, including Greek tzatziki, yogurt-cucumber sauce for shrimp, yogurt lime sauce for pork, and appetizers using yogurt cheese, all fall into the lower fat category, though they are not listed as such. The Roasted Sweet Onions, the Black Bean Corn Salsa, and some of the pasta recipes are also lower in fat.

Including the test kitchen's choices for Best Recipes of 2004, an enhanced Healthy and Light section, Top-Rated Menus, the 2004 Cookoff Winners, a Cooking School Bonus Section, and several indexes--for menus, titles, month-by-month specialties, and a general index--the book is well organized and accessible. Though the recipes tend to be heavy on the fat, and laden with butter, eggs, and cream, they are delicious for those who can afford to eat them. Perhaps someday in the future Southern Living will provide nutritional information for all their recipes to promote awareness of the relationship between saturated fats and heart disease for an audience that is aging and increasingly dependent on healthy cooking. n Mary Whipple

5 out of 5 stars Southern Like Grandmother Made.......2005-06-16

Being Southern born, when I first picked up this book I went looking for things that Grandmother used to cook.

In the first few pages I found "Hot-Water Cornbread." Yup! The recipe was right on. To be sure, Grandmother used yellow cornmeal rather than white, but that's OK. And in the recipe says "stir until the batter is the consistency of grits." -- That's southern.

Speaking of grits, there are six different dishes cooked with grits. I've only cooked four of those so far. (For you yankees, grits is polenta.) One recipe was not so good, it called for quick cooking grits. No self-respecting southerner would use quick grits. Instead get some good stone ground yellow grits. (Google will give you a lot of choices when you search for "stone ground grits." I've not tried them all, but all that I've tried have been good.)

This book is a collection of recipes from Southern Living magazine. They take a pretty wide interpretation of southern including gumbo from Louisiana, some Texas/western dishes, and even some Mexican.

As an annual book, this one contains a selection of recipes that were well received by the readers and by the magazine staff. It's a great book.
