Book Description

When Lois Lane Sings tells the story of a coming of age that takes half a century. Callie Harp is looking for joy, so when her estranged brother Monday's turbulent life lands him in the Indiana state pen, Callie leaves her beloved Kentucky to take refuge in the Pacific Northwest. When she marries and has two children, she is determined they will love each other. Her one dependable source of strength is an ancient pictograph residing in stony silence on the banks of the Columbia River where Callie goes on a regular basis to talk to She Who Watches.

When Monday goes into his house on Mother's Day, programs his answering machine with dark messages, holes up for six months, and gets himself declared mentally incompetent, Callie finally has to ask herself what this family of hers is all about. Then she has to go back—way back—following the thread of her mother's life through a labyrinth of four generations of stoic women and family secrets, her own included.

Callie Harp would know Barbara Kingsolver's prodigal Kentucky summers, and she would probably envy Wendell Berry's fidelity to family; but Callie truly understands Tony Morrison's chilling first-line observation in Tar Baby: “He believed he was safe.” Callie Harp is looking for joy, and, against all odds, she believes she can find it. Women everywhere know about that kind of hope.

5 out of 5 stars Great family saga that is well written.......2007-01-02

Reviewed by Cherie Fisher for Reader Views (12/06)

This book got me thinking about what a family is. According to census.gov "A family is defined as a group of two or more people (one of whom is the householder, the person in whose name the housing unit is owned or rented) living together and related by birth, marriage or adoption." What the definition does not describe is the dysfunction, love, craziness and support that go on in families. That is what "When Lois Lane Sings" is about. The book is about Waltice (Wally) Rose Harp, her husband J.D. and their two kids Monday and Callie. It is written from the viewpoint of the daughter, Callie.

The main character, Wally, is one of those people who light up a room just by walking into it. She is smart, fun, and incredibly hard working. Her family relations are another story. Wally's husband J.D. is a Southern gentleman of the Georgia Harp family who used to have money and connections but no longer does. He is very dedicated to his family, but not much of a businessman. Wally has a much better knack for business and steps in and takes over when J.D.'s health starts failing.

Monday Harp is another story - conman, sexually confused and self-perceived Southern gentleman. He is the thorn in his sister Callie's side and is constantly putting their relationship to the test throughout their lifetime. I would have written him off long before Callie ever does!

Callie Harp grows up being the good child. As she comes of age, she must deal with her dad's early death due to long-term illness, her relationship with her mom and her own life. During all the years of turmoil with her brother being incarcerated, she leaves the South and starts her life over in the Pacific Northwest, gets married and has a family. This is a good move for Callie as she begins her own road to self-discovery about her life and her own sexuality. To do this, she takes a close, long look at her own family. During this sometimes painful process, she finds strength in the ancient pictograph "She Who Watches" on the Columbia River.

"When Lois Lane Sings" is a well-written story and I would recommend it to people who enjoy family sagas - this is a great one. Trecia Greene definitely has a talent for detail and knows how to weave this into a story.

Book Description

The Great War of the Gods means nothing to the  proud people on the mortal planet--until Akhran the  Wandering God decrees the union of two mighty  feuding clans. Though the families are fierce  Warriors, they are few in number. Even the marriage of  Khardan and Zohra is not enough to over power the  strength of the invading army or prevent the  imprisonment of their peoples. Now, with Khardan and  Zohra mysteriously missing--seemingly cowards who  hid from certain defeat--the two clans have lost all  hope of ever again seeing their beloved open  skies. But Prince Khardan and Princess Zohra, aided by  the wizard Matthew, have been given another  mission...a mission that at first seems less useful  than counting the many grains of the desert sands,  but soon proves to be of far more lasting  importance.

4 out of 5 stars The plot thickens.......2005-09-17

This book picks up right where the first left off and continues to build an interesting and suspenseful storyline. The immortals play an even greater role in this one and Mat-hew, Zhora, and Khardan are caught up in the plots of an evil god and find themselves in a position to influence the future of their entire world. The secret of the two magical fish in a ball is uncovered and Quar's minions continue to conquer the world.

A highly entertaining read.

Too bad this book is currently out of print.. I bought a used copy after reading the first. This is a great book, don't miss it. I especially like Pukah's role in this as he finally triumphs over himself :) Anyway, I recommend reading the Darksword trilogy and especially 'The Death Gate Cycle' by these same authors.

Wow! I don't know what else to say...it was funny and sad and deep and just as good as the first in the trilogy!!!!!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great selection of short stories with cinematic themes..........2002-05-15

You must remember this features the love of Rick and Ilse as you've never imagined it before. Other stories offer a colorful
though often sadistic portrayal of the place where reality
meets the celluloid imaginings that too often seem to dominate
our lives. Wonderful, clear, easy to read prose. Bitingly honest.

3 out of 5 stars Coover's book was a very confusing piece of literature........1999-11-02

A Night at the Movies, is an illussive postmodern novel waith a dangerous twist of cinema genres. Coover's text interest me because all of the stories in novel seem to deal with identity. This is why I found the book confusing. Coover's illusive words and characters makr the novel hard to follow. Although coover's novel wasconfusing , it was not all bad. One of Coover's overall strengths was that he is able to create the cinematic feeling by being very desciptive. An example of his discriptive skill shows up in "Chalie in the House of Rue". Charlie discovers a police officer sitting in a tub of water. Coover describes,"His uniform is black ripply beneath the surface, the brass botton appearing to float free"(107). This descriptiion helps you visualize the officer, asif you are in the movies watching. This book is a okay read, but is very confusing. I suggest if you are not a vivid reader not to read this book. Unless your teacher assigns it. which in this case you better read it.

4 out of 5 stars Coovers book is a masterpiece that reflects today's society........1999-11-02

A NIGHT AT THE MOVIES by Robert Coover is a bunch of short stories within a story, these stories are based on movie sterotypes. This story is based on sex and violence which increase within the story. This story shows the purpose of the increase in sex and violence within society from the 40's to the present. Coover strength in most cases is how he uses various movie sterotypes to display the ending that is not your typical ending. A western movie would overall include the "good guy" winning, however its not in this case. Overall A NIGHT AT THE MOVIES by Robert Coover is a good read that display the way in which modern society has changed its openness and view on sex and violence and how people typically think a certain movie will end. This book is designed for a more mature audiance.

3 out of 5 stars Film and Television in black and white.......1999-11-02

A Night at the Movies by Robert Coover takes a look at film of the twentieth century in a way that makes you feel like you're in the front row enjoying every scene. Coover's breakdown of the different film genres is great. He gives us all a little taste of everything in the first chapter and then gets more focused on particular genres in later chapters. One of the overall strengths in the book is the transition from one genre to the next. In the beginning of the book where Coover is moving rapidly through different genres he still manages to tie in an interesting story. An over all weakness of the text is the very short sections between the others. These stories are very short and kind of slow. After reading them I wondered why they are even in the book. Coovers text provides a smooth transition from one film genre to the next. He does a good job of accomplishing what he set out to do. Which is explore the different types of films of our time. Coover's A Night at the Movies is worth while reading for anyone who is interested in film and wants to examine a wide range of film genres.

    4 out of 5 stars Coover's book is a great postmodernist reading........1999-11-02

"A Night at the Movies" by Robert Coover is a book partitioned into chapters each representing different film genre with sex and violence being the most dominant. One of the overall strength in Coover's text is that it is as close to reality as it is to fiction. That is considering the ideas and not necessarily the stories. For example, he explicitly describes sexual encounters which represents the unconscious thought of human beings. Coover makes a lot of references to multiple specific movie titles which a number of readers may not have seen or even heard of; however, his main intention is the general genres. The structure of the plot of this text is hetrogeneous with no clear cut shifting points. He takes the reader flying, sailing, riding, walking.. in a short moment. This can leave the reader confused and feeling a sense of ambiguity. However, Coover does a good job in recapturing the reader's attention. Especially when he reminds the reader between now and then that he/she doesn't belong in the story. He/she is only watching or reading the events. The reader is an outsider looking in. Coover plays with the elements of fiction very well to make this book a great piece of postmodernism.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great coverage of the huge variety of poker games available.......2005-02-15

I got this book hoping to add a little spice into our home game. Many of the people I play with (and me) stick to Texas Hold 'em for the most part, but fondly remember the days when "Chase the Queen" and "Iron Cross" built huge pots and made a home game really different from what you get in the Casino. I was really impressed with the coverage this book provides. Pretty much every aspect of the home game is there, and there are more varieties of poker outlined here than we'll ever get to in our game - there's just not enough time!

The first sections of "Poker Night" discuss many of the things that need to be considered before hosting a game. What kind of atmosphere are you going for? What sort of house rules should you establish? How do you handle the player who wins a huge hand and then wants to leave right away? "Poker Night" helps you prepare a sound set of house rules to make sure the game runs smoothly.

The real meat of the book covers every variation of poker I've ever heard of and many more. The publisher's outline above will give you an idea of what's there, and each is covered very well. Essentially the rules of each type of poker are covered in brief, and then they give a thorough breakdown of how each variety of them work. So, in the Stud section they cover the classic "Chase the Queen", and in the Community section they cover my favorite, "Iron Cross", but if you've wanted to know how to play "Baseball", "H-Bomb", or too many others to mention, chances are they're in here.

The section on Hold'em provides a good overview of the game, and provides some good information about the value of the various starting hands, and the strategy included would be very helpful for people just getting into the game or who are interested in taking control of their current home game. The final section includes some interesting notes about how casino poker games like Let It Ride and Caribbean Stud can be adjusted for home game play.

Overall, a really good overview of the wide variety of poker games played in living rooms around the world. "Poker Night" will definitely add something to anyone's game that's gotten a little too predictable.

A superpowered slugfest is to be had here. This is not surprising when Carnifex is in the action. Billy Ray is tasked to try and get a team into the Rox to stop Bloat and his ever increasing dream based madness. Billy actually stops to think, too.

Modular Man, on the other hand, must face the consequences of his action.

On other surprising fronts, the Turtle has problems with women.

If all this fails, their only hope may be the Australian ace, Wyungore.

I liked the games in this book a lot! This is the book for those evenings when you're playing with your friends for quarters, and everyone calls a crazy game. Some are old favorites that everyone's heard of, and some I have never seen before in my life. The illustrations are funny! Many, many poker nights' worth of fun.

4 out of 5 stars Great basics (plus 200+ Variants).......2005-08-04

I was looking for something that would give me some solid basics (House Rules Examples, Low Hand, basic variants) and a "How To". That part of book is solid and useful. Oh yeah, there are are also a boat load of variants that I have only even begun to take in. I will be breaking those out next poker night (about once a month).

If your looking for strategy, this isn't really for you, but if you want a book that will make you feel comfortable with basic poker and give you plenty of games to dabble at It's a good purchase.

If you want to get together with friends for a good relaxing game of poker, you must have this book at the table. It's not for serious hardcore people but for regular humans, who want to unwind with a fun game.

The best feature of the book is the list of hundreds and hundreds of different poker games, ranging from the old stand-bys everyone knows (like Baseball), to some truly crazy and entertaining games. My regular table can't survive a night without a few games of Diablo, Frankenstein, and Jane Austen.

And it's a hilarious book. Even if you don't play many of the games in it, it's simply a good read.

          5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!.......2006-08-04

I must admit I didn't know this play existed until the movie came out. The script does not dissapoint. For those of you that are into intense character development and gritty language - this is for you. Would be great to have for scene work, it includes scenes for 2 men, 2 women, 1 man and 1 woman. No great monologues throughout the entire book though.

          5 out of 5 stars I love "Closer".......2006-02-17

I have not yet read the other two plays, and I bought this book so I could do just that. However, "Closer" is so captivating to me and so satisfying in its complexity that I feel ok about giving the whole a 5 star rating even before I've read the others. This writer's ability to express the emotional depth of a variety of characters in one play and reveal how they all influence and are influenced by one another makes this a very stimulating read. The movie was wonderful as well. I don't think I like one over the other.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent Buy.......2005-09-09

To be perfectly honest, I bought this book to read "Closer", after having seen the movie, which I loved. It was really intriguing to see a movie based on a play, as an avid theatre-goer. You can tell that the movie was based on a stage production, just because it relies almost entirely on text, as opposed to the other production elements. There are almost no blank spaces of silence in this movie! But that's not why I'm here...the play was every bit as raw and filthy as the movie. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Marbers other plays, Dealer's Choice and After Miss Julie, were of equal quality, and offered something surprisingly different from his other text (a rarity in today's theatre world). I do suggest reading the book front to back, to get a grasp of his style...the text is so readable (even for people who tend to read only prose).

Dealer's Choice - This play follows several men who meet up to play poker every once in awhile. What should be a simple game between them holds such higher relevance, which we learn as the play progresses. As another reviewer posted before, Marber has mastered time flow with this piece. The characters are believable, and play off of each other with such ease.

After Miss Julie - Being a youngun who hasn't even read the original "Miss Julie", I has reservations that I might not understand the characters or storyline at all in this one. I was proven wrong, of course, as this story of passion and greed jumps off the page and brings you right into the scene. The text is really vivid with this, and carries such an elegant theme to it, which makes the fall of this elegance so much more brutal and fun to read. I love the play on societal differences that this plot brings out, the dominant and the submissive. Very engaging.

Closer - The character work in this is brilliant, as well as the pace. Marber has such remarkable ease with the character interactions, given such a complex and fast moving storyline. There is nothing unneccessary, but it moves along slowly enough for you to grasp every image, and idea. A couple of scenes that were excluded from the movie were a nice surprise, as well as a plot twist at the end that was only suggested in the movie, if that. Never before have I read a scene in a play and felt as though I should read it aloud. Doing so gave me shivers. Brilliant for actors looking for ruthless, energetic text that rolls off the tongue. Though the characters fall is shatttering and devastating, the play is beautiful and satisfying in the end.

Overall, I completely recommend this text, for people just getting into playreading, or avid readers. Can't wait to see more of what Marber can bring to the table.

          5 out of 5 stars Defiantly worth it's price.......2005-01-07

The Book it's self is of average quality. Nothing special about the binding, I don't think it could last more than 5 years with normal use.

Patrick Marber is a novice play right but one with so much natural talent he seems like a seasoned pro at times. Dealer's choice has never been on my hit list but I have admired his rendition of Miss Julie in his After Miss Julie. Closer is the crown jewel of this collection. Witty and honest portray of how people choice to mess up their relationships. The book is in chronological order, going for his first play Dealers Choice to After Miss Julie then ending with Closer. If you read the book straight through you can see his writing style mature from dealer's choice and eventually peak in Closer. The intro and forward are nothing to brag about and might as well not be included. If you're looking to get this book cause you saw the movie version of closer then I recommend it. The movie is almost a exact replica of the play with just a few location changes and some scenes deleted. The character Alice isn't so sympathetic in the play but just as vulnerable and endearing.

The material speaks for itself really. Patrick Marber is a brilliant playwright and I look forward to any future material he produces.

A very funny comedy about a group of guys that join together to play poker. Mugsy is the heart of the comedy and will give you a lot of fun even though you may ignore the poker jargon used throughout the play.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best recent plays.......2003-04-10

An exceptionally well crafted play about six poker players, each with their own demons, "Dealer's Choice" is a profound study of not just compulsion but how we mix emotion, desire and hope into decisions that on the surface should be purely rational. Although "Dealer's Choice" is a dark play, Marber skillfully mixes comedy into the drama without diminishing it.

Given its accolades - 1995 Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy and the Writer's Guild Award for Best West End Play, along with rave reviews in the US - I wonder why I had to use a bookseller in England to get my copy.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Readings of Excellent Stories!.......2000-08-17

I actually own the Audible.com copy of these books, and purchased it because I had heard the Audio Book of Lucky Day and wanted to hear it again and share it with others.

Lucky Day and Trapped are among the best of the 5 stories, as they are fairly short and keep you very interested the whole time. The longer features are also good however they are read by males with lower voices and were harder to hear because I was on an Airplane, so I did not listen to them as much.

Lucky Day has a very great climax and you will be shocked and amused as the narrator dramtically reveals the last few paragraphs.

Trapped is a less known Dean R. Koontz story, however it is a very good one, and is quite believable!

I share these treasures with my friends in my car, and long plane trips seem much shorter with this book! If you don't buy it, find someone who did because there is hours of entertainment you shouldn't miss!

5 out of 5 stars You will be on the edge of your seat . . ........1999-01-08

This cassette is worth it just to hear "Lucky Day" by Mary Higgins Clark and "Trapped" by Dean Koontz. In fact, this cassette hooked me on Mary Higgins Clark. Both stories are full of suspense. You will be sitting on the seat of your chair trying to figure out in "Lucky Day" who killed the old man, why, and why the woman's husband is suddenly acting so strange. At the end, you experience the same shock the characters do and rethink your own relationship with the one you love and trust the most. In "Trapped," super intelligent lab rats escape and take on the task of of trapping the humans that created them before they themselves become trapped. When the rats blow up a farmhouse on their own accord, you begin to wonder if the rats have actually won.

i Liberation Theology after the End of History /i assesses the impact of Christian resistance to capitalism in Latin America, and the implications of the theological debates that have emerged through its evolution. Using the postmodern critical theory of Deleuze and Foucault, Bell investigates the nature of capitalism, its effect upon human desire and the response of the Church to this social phenomenon, resulting in the most thorough account to date of the rise, failure and future prospects of Latin American liberation theology.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ecclesial Resistance to Capitalism.......2004-12-26

Liberation Theology has fallen on hard times in the wake of the "triumph of capitalism" in the lase 20 years. In this fascinating and engaging book, Daniel Bell revisits Liberation Theology in light of the contemporary global situation and examins the shortcomings of conventional Liberation Theology, pointing instead to an ecclesiocentric form of theology and practice which offers a means of Christian resistance to the triumph of global capitalism.

Bell first sets out to examine that nature of capitalism which he identifies as a "discipline of desire." Capitalism channels, shapes and corrupts human desire ordering them toward violent, sinful ends which manifest themselves throught the Third World where the horrible fruits of capitalism are being born out. Bell shows how capitalism captures human desire and orders it toward consumption in the market. This "technology of desire" has in large part subverted the church and it's mission to embody God's kingdom.

Concentrating at length on how this has manifiested itself in the failure of Liberation Theology in Latin America, Bell shows the effect of the "New Christendom" ecclesiology of Maritain and it's and Liberation Theology's ultimately failing to recognize the church a political, social and economic body in it's own right. Liberation Theology is flawed in it's acceptance of the modernist notion of "politics as statecraft" which curtains off the church from a properly direct challenge to the powers of the state and the market.

Bell sketches in response an ecclesial model of resistance to capitialism grounded in the Christian practice of forgiveness, which as Bell argues counters the capitalist technology of desire with a "therapy of desire" which heals human desires, reordering them to their proper end of communion with God and others.

From begining to end this book is fascinating and profound. His argument that forgiveness between victims and victimizers is the proper Christian response to the evils of capitalism is, I think excellent. Moreover, Bell is constantly careful to ground his understanging of the Church's practices in the Spirit's work within the church which ultimately flows from and returns to the life of communion, self-donation and plenitude that characterizes the Triune Life of God. This book is perhaps the best contemporary book on Liberation Theology as well as a compelling theological critique of capitalism and account of a Christian understanding of desire and forgiveness. As two of the commentators on the cover of the book note, this book is helpfully read in connection with William Cavanaugh's "Torture and Eucharist" which touches on many of the same themes. Highly recommended.
