Book Description

Vintage Readers are a perfect introduction to some of the great modern writers presented in attractive, accessible paperback editions.

“One of the few genuinely indispensable writers.” —The Saturday Review

In his internationally acclaimed novels, short stories, plays and essays, James Baldwin was and remains a powerfully prophetic voice in the American literary landscape, fearlessly brooding upon issues such as race, sex, politics, and art. His literary achievement is a lasting legacy about what it means to be American.

Vintage Baldwin includes the short story “Sonny’s Blues”; the galvanizing civil rights examination “My Dungeon Shook: Letter to My Nephew on the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Emancipation”; the essays “Fifth Avenue, Uptown: A Letter from Harlem,” “The Discovery of What It Means to Be an American,” and “Nobody Knows My Name: A Letter from the South”; and excerpts from the novel Another Country and the play The Amen Corner.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars 2 fantastic pieces!.......2004-02-23

Of the 8 selections featured in this reader, I found 2 to be beyond comparison. "Sonny's Blues" and "Another Country."

Sonny's Blues had simply an *amazing* opening--one of those opening paragraphs that fully pulls you right in. The story itself was very simplistic and...well, just good.

Also, I really enjoyed Another Country for the pure progression of events. It took place as a larger story (which it is), yet was self-contained within its own right.

As far as the other selections go, I found it rather hit and miss. The first few were rather short and enjoyable. Others seemed redundant in their message.

    Book Description

Based on Alex Haley’s bestselling classic The Autobiography of Malcolm X, a rare, lucidly composed screenplay from one of America’s great masters of letters.

Son of a Baptist minister; New York City hustler; honor student; convicted criminal; powerful minister in the Nation of Islam; father and husband: Malcolm X transformed himself, time and again, in order to become one of the most feared, loved, and undeniably charismatic leaders of twentieth-century America. No one better represents the tumultuous times of his generation, and there is no one better to capture him and his milieu than James Baldwin. With spare, elegant, yet forceful dialogue and fresh, precise camera directions, Baldwin breathes cinematic life into this controversial and important figure, offering a new look at a man who changed himself in order to change the country.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars interesting.......2000-02-13

This is a decent read, though not too learn anything about Malcolm x. It was written while Elijah Muhammad was still alive, so some of the seedier details of the story of their split are left out, probably out of a fear of villifying the NOI. The script that was eventually used for Spike Lee's film is an improvement, both dramatically and historically. Clearly, though, Baldwin deserved some credit in the film, as there were passages of dialogue and story elements that remain. He actually has credit in the film, but not on the promo work on the tape cover. All things told, I'd only recommend it to Baldwin and Malcolm X completists.

3 out of 5 stars intellectually stimulating and left 36 footprints in my soul.......1999-06-20

the beginning was powerful when he reveiwed his childhood. his speeches were a bit biased, but they told a good story about life. What is life? Is life, life? Are we life? Does the cookbook give the proper recipe for twice baked potatoes? Loving is Life. Malcolm X had trouble finding this realization, but his message was bold, powerful, and worth reading about. Cheese is good. Beef, it's what's for dinner.

          Book Description

The End of the Third Age is comprised of the first section of the hardcover volume published as Sauron Defeated, the ninth volume of The History of Middle-earth. It completes Christopher Tolkien's account of the creation of The Lord of the Rings begun in the earlier volumes, The Return of the Shadow, The Treason of Isengard, and The War of the Ring.

The End of the Third Age begins with Sam's rescue of Frodo from the Tower of Kirith Ungol, and giving a very different account of the Scouring of the Shire, this part ends with versions of the hitherto unpublished Epilogue, in which, years after the departure of Bilbo and Frodo from the Grey Havens, Sam attempts to answer his children's questions.

The book is illustrated with changing conceptions of Kirith Ungol and Mount Doom, as well as previously unpublished drawings of Orthanc and Dunharrow.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The final volume in the history of the LOTR's genesis.......2004-06-01

Christopher Tolkien's final entry in his history of the writing of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy is an abbreviated version of his "Sauron Defeated" coupled with some miscellaneous scraps, most notably the possible epilogue which Tolkien wrote, but discarded, later, regarding Sam's forthcoming final meeting with King Elessar of Gondor. It also includes information on The One Ring's destruction at Mount Doom, and the subsequent parting of the surviving Fellowship of the Ring. This slender volume with be of interest to diehard Tolkien fans and literary scholars alike.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for an understanding of LOTR's creation.......2004-05-10

"The End of the Third Age" is the last of four volumes dealing with the history of the writing of "The Lord of the Rings."

It is also, buyers should know, an independently published portion of the previously published book called "Sauron Defeated," not a wholly new entry into the "History of Middle Earth" series, the larger, 12-part History that takes a close look at the creation of Tolkien's greatest achievement - Middle Earth itself - through early drafts, unpublished texts, and dead end writings. If you already have "Sauron Defeated," you will find no new text here.

If you're not a Tolkien fan, you need not apply. These incomplete and unfinished texts of early LOTR drafts, all explained, footnoted, annotated and expounded upon by his son, Christopher Tolkien, will only bore you. But if you're interested in seeing how the Professor developed the rich creation of Middle Earth, warts and all, this is a treasure trove of material. Christopher Tolkien goes to great lengths to examine each text, putting them in the context of the larger puzzle of his father's writings.

Most fascinating, and making this arguably the most essential entry to purchase for fans of the famous "trilogy," is the previously unpublished Epilogue featuring Sam speaking to his children. It was originally intended to be the book's final chapter, but was ultimately cut. It makes for interesting reading.

Again, take note: readers who can track down "Sauron Defeated" will get the entire text of this volume in that book, plus a wealth of other material not directly related to "The Lord of the Rings."

For casual fans, this is text better left unread. This is, after all, a series of unfinished draft chapters and essays. I enjoyed it, but many won't. Seek elsewhere if you are looking for more tales in the way of "The Lord of the Rings."

For ardent Tolkien readers, the series is a fascinating look at one of the great literary creations of the 20th Century, full of writings never before seen and stories only now being told. The exploration of how "The Lord of the Rings" came about is fantastic for those interested. Christopher Tolkien's work here is appreciated. Snatch this up.

4 out of 5 stars Among the last scraps.......2004-03-20

His notes. His rewrites. His discarded scribbles. His shopping lists. Just about every word J.R.R. Tolkien ever wrote has been carefully scrutinized and compiled into the "History" series. The finale of the series, "The End of the Third Age," is a prized curiosity for fans.

It contains Tolkien's (sometimes garbled) notes and drafts of "Return of the King." Different lines, altered characterizations, changed scenes, and a radically different Scouring of the Shire appear in these drafts. (Frodo killed "Sharkey" in earlier drafts) Christopher Tolkien provides plenty of explanation between nuggets of text about "my father's" writings. And the crowning touch is a couple drafts of the unused epilogue, in which we see Sam talking with his family.

People who aren't devoted fans of the "Lord of the Rings" books may be completely befuddled by "End of the Third Age." It's a fangeek thing, but it also serves as a literary curiosity. How did the story evolve, and how it was originally different? Well, this is part of what Tolkien wrote before the story was finished and published.

Tolkien's outstanding writing is hinted at even in the roughest, most incomplete fragments. And what makes this of special interest is not what was unfinished, but what was finished and not included. The epilogues (which were unfortunately not used) are beautiful, sweet and touching, and show Tolkien's love of family. They also serve as a better wrap-up to the trilogy.

The sweet epilogues lift "End of the Third Age" from a fan curiosity to a sort of "director's cut" book. For die-hard fans, it's a must-have. For casual fans, it's certainly something to check out.

4 out of 5 stars The End of the HoME Series.......2003-05-23

It had to come to this. Every scrap of paper, memo, hankerchief and paper airplane that ever passed through JRR Tolkien's field of vision has been plundered of its commercial potential. The product is a mass of marginally legible notes which appeal to diehard fans (like me), but will have little appeal for the casual Tolkien afficienado. For the latter, purchase at your own risk.

          1 out of 5 stars A Fair Warning.......2000-11-12

If you already have the 9th volume in the 'History of Middle-earth' (H.O.M.E), 'Sauron Defeated' (published in 1992), you DO NOT need to buy this book, 'The End of the Third Age': It contain less then half the material that already appered in volume 9 (i.e pages 3-141 of the main text & 441-457 of the index). The soul purpose of this book is to complement the newly-packeged 'mini series' 'The History of the Lord of the Rings', which is made up from volumes 6, 7, 8 & this first half of volume 9 of the H.O.M.E. series. The current book DOES NOT CONTAIN ANY NEW MATERIAL.

              Book Description

In a vision of apocalyptic pessimism, this critical examination explores the multitude of economic, environmental, and social problems facing human civilization. A global situation of "planetary overload" has made our world alien, hostile, and increasingly out of control, distant from human culture and communities, and approaching a point of critical instability, after which a breakdown of civilization occurs.

It seems Harper Collins has two different books in their catalog with the ISBN of 0261103253. One is the 1995 copywrite revised text edition paperback (which is the book you will actually get if you order it.) The other is the 50th Anniversary edition paperback (which is the cover picture shown here.) So buyer beware.

              5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2004-03-27

Here's a little 'history' of the publishing: when Tolkien wrote 'Lord of the Rings', he wrote it as one book, wanted it read as one book, published as one book. 2 out of 3 isn't bad. Back in the day (1954-55) it was costly to print it as one book, so it got split into 3 (Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, Return of the King). Many years later, you go to the book shop and it like wall-to-wall with different varities of this book. I highly recommend getting the 'single voulme'. One book is easier to keep track of and store rather than three. Plus, it's how Tolkien WANTED it to be published. Now that he has passed away (Sept 2, 1973), as a reader, it's kind to respect his wishes. I don't want to spoil the book, other than you should The Hobbit first to really KNOW the WHOLE story, though you don't have to. Both The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are excellent books. Highly recommended.

              5 out of 5 stars well..........2004-02-15

This is excellent, the way the Lord of the Rings should always have been published. It was the way it was intended to be published as well.

If you don't have the trilogy, what are you waiting for?

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this book.......2002-09-02

This is, by far, the greatest book ever written. It's not a story so much as it is a world, and it's not a fantasy so much as it's a tale of incredible friendship. Everyone should read this book. It will change the way you view life.

This book is very exciting. It is especially good if you like baseball cards. It's about a group of kids who live in a small town. It was built for their parents company and they all will be moving soon. After they buy baseball cards at a garage sale they find out they are worth a lot of money. They split all the cards except for the most valuable card in which they decide to give to the last man living there. It was one of those books where you want to put yourself in their situations. If you're into books where there is always something going on then this is the book for you. I read this book for a book report and like it a lot.

This is a really good book that keeps you on the edge of your seat. It is an adventurous and breathtaking book. I couldn't put it down. It is one of the best books I've read. It kept me wondering who was going to be the last man not to move and what their reward was going to be.Yea!

5 out of 5 stars Seminal work by leading Gutenberg scholar.......2003-06-19

Kapr's book is the result of his life's research on Gutenberg and a summary of all that was known on the subject by the late 20th century. Some readers might find the book slightly dry and scholarly, but it gives all the familiar and obscure, bizarre and quirky tales about the inventor of printing, and it patiently distinguishes which parts of the legend are speculative and apocryphal from those that deserve to be considered historical fact. Kapr's narrative paints a vivid picture of fifteenth-century southwestern Germany, its social structure and politics and the conditions that set the stage for Gutenberg's achievment. We see Gutenberg's childhood as the son of a wealthy businessman and wine producer and how this could have given him the ideas he later put into practice in his inventions. One of the more interesting and illustrative stories is Gutenberg's invention of metal stamping to manufacture mirrors for the pilgrims at Aachen, a brilliant piece of imaginative work that was blunted by his miscalculation by a year of the date of the Aachen pilgrimmage. Throughout the book we see repeated instances of Gutenberg's restless inventive powers and his benighted (or astonishingly unlucky) career as a businessperson. In the end, Kapr shows how Gutenberg fell afoul of the Pope and was driven out of his home town by the Pope's allies and left to die in obscurity. In addition, the book shows to a small degree the contribution of Peter Schoeffer to the invention and explains why the world's first printing firm was Fust und Schoeffer rather than Gutenberg und Gesellschaft. As a reader with a personal interest in printing and typography and an amateur historian's thirst for more fine details to round out my knowledge of the early Renaissance, I found this book to be unputdownable.

It gives printers a sense of pride in there fast paced sometimes unappreciated work. It helps people realize that it was a printer who single handedly raised mankind out of the dark ages.

Albert is always on the lookout for things to fix. If a hinge is rusty, he oils it. If a roof is leaky, he repairs it. When Mr. Jensen s old green pickup needs a new motor, Albert hoists up the truck and drops it in. All his neighbors count on Albert to help them. He is never too busy or too tried to help.

But one day Albert is too sick to get out of bed. He s dizzy and his bones ache. When his neighbors find out, they all lend a hand to help Albert. Thanks to his friends, he is quickly on the mend.

Author Janet Lord s simple story of generosity repaid is complemented by artist Julie Paschkis s colorful, folk-style illustrations. The result is a timeless story for young children that celebrates the importance of helping others and demonstrates the value of community.

                                Book Description

Albert, or The Book of Man is the third book in the chronicles of the planet Ki, which have already produced the classic gay science fiction thriller Mirage -nominated for a Lambda Literary Award for Gay Science Fiction-and its powerful successor Circles. Albert is even more incendiary and exciting than its predessors. Although it is a continuation of the story of tribal Ki, it deals with new characters and can be read separately. Albert casts its shadow into the future of life on Earth-America. The year 2025, when the country is even more polarized than present and the ultra-conservative White Christian Party has taken over. The country is now scored into rigid "WCP zones" and "gay reserves," those few places where gays and lesbians can live openly and under their own fragile rule. Into this world Albert must seek refuge, after Ki has been taken over by the forces of a renegade warlord, Anvil, and Woosh, the sinister leader of the tribe of the Blue Monkeys. Who exactly is Albert? The long-hoped-for son of a pair of Kivian Same-Sex men and an unknown mother, as a child Albert was raised in the midst of deceit, war, and murder. As an adult, he separated himself from the intrigues of his planet. After the death of his royal father, Enkidu, who has become the Lord of Ki, Albert must pay the price of keeping this distance. Using his powerful third testicle, "the Egg of the Eye," Albert will be reborn on Earth, the son of a "virgin" lesbian mother and an unknown father. Rising from the waters in the gay reserve of Provincetown, Albert will become the center of a whirlpool of personal and political struggles: he will grow to be a man in only four years, find himself passionately loved by his Earth father, and then find the mate who will take his heart away as Albert plots to get his mate back to Ki and attempts to rule life on this strangest of small planets. Albert is the gay Everyman at the crossroads of two planets and two centuries. Like all of us, he is attempting to find his own story, his roots, and to define himself and the tribe he comes from. Albert is indeed the story of Man, and the latest part of the story of Ki, where Same-Sex men mate for life, where power defines love and sex, and where the merciful Sisters of Ki attempt to keep life in balance. As in any great work of Extra-Reality fiction, Albert is a mirror into our own world and presents for us a true picture of ourselves, our nightmares, and our most colorful fantasies.

Man Pipe? Third Testical as source of power? I thought these kinds of plots went out with the lunatic fringe of the Feminist Movement. And I thought the Womb of God was bad.

Time to take this book out back and shoot it.

Albert or the book of man: the more earth basd sequel which contrasts the gay paradis country with a distopian view of earth. Trying to merge science-fiction, gay erotica, humanoid alien culture (including instead of the wellknown third eye an extra lust-spending third testicle) and new age philosopy this book can be recomended to the collector of gay science fiction and fantasy. It has some nice erotic scenes as well. Probably a good summer read.

4 out of 5 stars Quick! Easy!! and Delicious!!!.......2007-08-26

I am an Indian and a big fan of cookbooks - both as a coffee-table collection and for actual cooking. This book has some interesting recipes, some better than the others. The few that we have tried out so far were really good and I can think of quite a few more that look tempting from the description. Most of them seem to be "quick and easy" as the author suggests; even though some of them may call for a relatively high number of ingredients. Having said that, most Indian entrees do require a lot of ingredients. My only complaint is the lack of attractive pictures. There are a few, but not nearly enough. I am a visual person and a few more colored pictures would make this a great coffee-table addition!

5 out of 5 stars Great, easy introduction to Indian cooking.......2006-10-09

I've used this book for several years--at least once a week. It's a good introduction to Indian cooking and, with the use of the pressure cooker, it's easy to make a tasty recipe when you don't get home until 6 pm. Once you're used to these recipes, you can adapt those in some of her other books (and recipes by other people) for the pressure cooker. My one warning -- in my experience you need a LOT less liquid in the pressure cooker for some of the recipes. Experiment to see what works for you.

I'm a huge fan of Madhur Jaffrey's show and her restaurants. Her style is to add an American flair to Indian cooking. While her recipes are fun and easy, they aren't pure authentic indian meals. They are, however, still interesting and tasty....just don't go to India expecting to see these items on a menu!

5 out of 5 stars Great cookbook! Make it your first one........2006-05-17

Great cookbook for the beginning Indian cook. Everything I've made has come out tasty according to my Indian son-in-law. Good explanations for ingredients and preparation steps. Also a nice variety of dishes.

I was very disappointed with this book. The food made for the recipes listed are terrible (and I tried at least six) and taste nothing like what you would expect either from a good Indian restaurant, or a home cooked meal in an Indian household. Many of the ingredients are difficult to obtain - and who cooks with a pressure cooker these days anyway? Don't waste your money!

The recipes are simple to understand and great tasting. Suggesting dishes to serve with each recipe help the uninitiated to get started. This is a great cookbook. My favorite - the samosas. Serve it with Tamarind Sauce, Mango Sauce (often found as a pulp in a can) and yoghurt.
