She is bound to Jenna-the other half of Jenna's self. Drawn out of a mirror by a rite of magic, a "dark sister" is confined to the dark. She vanishes in daylight. It is in this other world the dark sisters wait for moonlight or lamplight to call them forth again. This is their story: of myths turned real, ordinary people turned heroes, a land turned inside out by the coming of White Jenna.

                      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The Heart is Quicker than the Eye.......2002-09-07

Although a sequel to Sister Light, Sister Dark, this shadowy fantasy weaves a complete tapestry of chiaroscuro. Prophecies on the slant, heroic female protagonists and cruel villains compete for the Dales--an unspecified island realm consisting of two uneasily mixed races. But supernatural folk intermingle with humans, as many women were born with dark sisters (fantasy twins.) Besides the Greena (Little People)who possess curious powers, there is the image of the Great Alta herself--mother goddess to many women of Earth, ruling through a succession of priestesses.

Young teenage Jenna--reluctant to consider herself the Anna of legend--undertakes a quest to warn her sisters in some 17 Hames about the rampages of the scourge of the Dales--perpetrated by brutal soldiers of the usurper. She is joined by a very young priestess named Petra, a middle-aged mentor Sister, Catrona, and ultimately by 3 youths who will become heralds of the true king. Who will emerge at the final coronation: the vicious Toad or one of the 2 rightful heirs?
Can a mere girl effect the ruin of the Hound, the Boar, the Bull and the Cat by her own, delicate hand? Privately seeking her young prince (from Book I), Jenna dedicates her will and her body to saving her sisters and restoring peace to the land. But why do so many insist that she is the legendary Anna?

Intermingling threads of various hues (myth, legend, "History" and the story itself), the author deftly spins a web of medieval intrigue in a supernatural sphere. The plot gradually tautens around the spindle of fate, to its dramatic denouement--interspersed with folk sayings of the Dalians. Jenna blushes with maidenly modesty at veiled sexual inuendoes, but few secrets escape the twinning knowledge of Skada, her dark sister.
Yolen occasionally inserts sly humor in the form of pseudo-scholarly debates among "Historians". Readers will enter a realm where the heart is quicker than the eye, where reality and fantasy inferface with sylvan grace. For ages 16 and up.

4 out of 5 stars Good, But Not Without Flaws.......2000-12-18

Jane Yolen is a superbly gifted artist. In _Sister Light, Sister Dark_, she introduced us to White Jenna, the Anna of prophecy and a young woman caught up in matters beyond her understanding; the end to Jenna's story is found in this sequel, _White Jenna_. Here we see a continuation of a very intriguing, original theme: the difference between myth, legend, history, and truth, where what really happened may strike historians as the incredible thing of all.

It's a shame, though, that the story itself isn't quite as mesmerizing as the theme behind it. The large role promised to Skada on the bookflap is never actually given; rather than sister, Dark Queen, and equal, she seems more like Jenna's convenient and helpful servant, showing up only in times of trouble. Large spans of time are skipped over; the fast-forwarding through the rest of Jenna's life was particularly irritating. Most of the characters either weren't developed as fully as they could have been or seemed like clones of earlier ones--there was remarkably little difference between Pynt and Petra, given that the latter originally seemed much more serious-minded. And despite what I said earlier about the main charm of the book being its comparison of history and truth, myth and reality, Jenna really did seem to accomplish amazingly little for a woman whose coming has been foretold for centuries and who was supposed to be a Goddess's good right hand.

Still, it's not at all a bad book. People who enjoyed the first in the series should likewise enjoy this one, for even with all its flaws, Jenna is as intriguing a heroine as ever, Carum as winsome, and Skada as entertaining. I probably wouldn't advise anyone to read this unless they've already read _Sister Light, Sister Dark_, though; whoever tries to do so is likely to end up very confused.

                      3 out of 5 stars Disappointing sequel.......2000-01-31

You know what they say... sequels are never as great as originals. I waited for what seems like forever for this book, and it was kinda disappointing. It didn't have the same magic Sister Light, Sister Dark had. The storytelling seemed kind of rushed and Skada's role was underplayed too much. All in all, a fizzling conclusion to a good beginning.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST I've Ever Read!!.......1997-10-23

I read the first book, Sister Light, Sister Dark, and couldn't wait to read the sequel. Now I have, and I am very anxious for a third book of the series. I love the books, and I wish I knew where to look for the 3rd one.

This is a homey fantasy, almost excessively so. Doughnuts, family tensions, relatives who arrive in a Winnebago, Christmas decorations, business worries, Uncle Henry's womanizing, and pyramid schemes wrap Walt Stebbins in layers of detail and distraction. Walt runs a small catalog business out of his garage, and he has no notion of a demonic presence in his town until a package is mistakenly delivered to him. The contents are not the inexpensive Chinese toys and novelties he deals in. The nasty-looking pickled bluebird of happiness ("Best thing come to you. Speak any wish.") piques Walt's interest, and he keeps it when he rewraps the box and passes it on to the addressee: the one person in the world Walt loathes, his former friend Robert Argyle. But Walt's keeping back the bluebird of happiness is the best thing that could have happened to Argyle--and the worst thing that could happen to Walt. What price happiness? If you have to ask ...

5 out of 5 stars terrific faustian story.......2001-09-03

What is the cost of making a deal with the devil? What sort of person enters such a deal? Can one slide into into one of these deals slowly without realizing it?

These are the questions this wonderful novel explores. Mr. Blatlock is, in my opinion, the contemporary master of combining fantastical ideas and very real, even mundane characters who tend to remind you of yourself.

I would compare this particular novel with Charles Williams' _Descent Into Hell_, which I read at about the same time. They are both fine descriptions of the road to hell and the people on it, from writers who understand that the danger involved are not just in the realm of fantasy.

Just check it out and see!

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing, but slight........2001-05-28

When Walt receives the Bluebird of Happiness by mistake, he doesn't realize he's become part of a battle between good and evil that will eventually touch his entire family.

This was my first Blaylock, and I found it interesting, with touches that reminded me of Dick (always a good sign). I was less interested in the characters themselves than I was in the ideas that made up the plot, and the little quirky moments that seemed to fill the novel.

Based on the reader reviews, I think that I will try Paper Grail next and see if it satisfies more by expanding on the elements that I liked.

5 out of 5 stars Beware the bluebird of happiness.......2001-03-24

This is one of Blaylock's best and it would be an excellent place to start if you're not familiar with this author. The plotting is tighter than in most of Blaylock's books, so the story is intricate and intriguing enough to keep you turning the pages, and the ending is particularly nice. It is a fantasy tale in a contemporary setting, with somewhat of a monkey's paw concept driving the plot(you'll never think of the Bluebird of Happiness quite the same way), but the real magic is in Blaylock's joyously eccentric characters and his ability to make very ordinary people and places seem totally fantastic.

2 out of 5 stars Crashing down the hill.......2001-01-19

This book started out with a bang and slowly went down from there. Blaylock had a great idea, some wonderful characters, but just dropped the ball. He had a wonderful build but then didn't know what to do with the novel and just threw a few unrelated ideas together and ended the book. Because I've heard some good things about this author I'm willing to give him another try and just put this one down as a strikeout.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Weird Christmas Tale.......2000-12-29

Walt Stebbins is expecting a lean Christmas. While his back-stabbing former business partner rakes in the millions, Walt is loaded with nothing but uninvited holiday houseguests. When a package meant for his ex-partner, mistakenly delivered to Walt, turns out to contain a talisman of strange power -- a dead "bluebird of happiness" that promises to grant all wishes -- it seems the answer to a prayer. The truth is more complex-- and much more sinister.

James Blaylock's novels are hard to describe -- funny/serious, beautifully written, highly literate, quirky, surrealistic romps through a world of mystery lying just beneath the surface of prosaic suburban American life. The typical Blaylock story takes the kind of nice guy who proverbially finishes last and throws him in the midst of a cosmic battle between good & evil which is fought in banal, recognizable surroundings: strip malls, suburban lawns, donut shops. The effect is sort of G.K. Chesterton on acid: fables of high moral purpose with a much less rigid notion of morality than Chesterton's and a weirder sense of humor. Well-read readers with a taste for oddities should try them.

The first edition of this popular wine reference was hailed by Jurgen Gothe of the Vancouver Sun as “the best new wine book in more than a decade.” The New Wine Lover's Companion has been completely rewritten and updated to make it even better. No wine snobbery here. This book's style is relaxed and conversational, serving up information without intimidating its reader. Arranged alphabetically, nearly 4,000 entries include innumerable details on grape varieties; wine styles; wine-growing regions; wine label terms; winemaking techniques; how to buy, store, and serve wine; how to have a wine tasting; wine-testing terms; sizes and styles of glassware, wine bottles, and wine openers; ordering wine in a restaurant; opening and serving wine at home; temperatures for serving wine; and much more. This book is the only A-to-Z wine reference that offers phonetic pronunciations. It boasts a totally revised and expanded appendix enhanced with charts, line art, and sample labels. Praise for the previous edition came from many food and dining authorities: “…an invaluable, user-friendly reference. I learned something from the very first page I turned to, and keep learning as I keep turning.” —William Rice, Food and Wine Columnist, Chicago Tribune . . . “A great reference! . . . excellent and accurate source for both wine professionals and those involved with wine purely for the love of it.” —Jacques Pepin, cookbook author and TV chef

It may very well be insanity that causes me to focus so strongly on my profession, but I'm always reading and watching culinary related books and TV shows. Very often, you'll find that books and television don't always explain certain bits of information as well as you'd like if at all. And even then, their information is sometimes flat out wrong. That's when I turn to this book. It took years of convincing for me to give this book a try, but now it's the only food reference book that has it's very own place on my desk at home.

The book is basically a food related dictionary that describes a bit about history or culinary uses of nearly every culinary item, ingredient, or term. It also has a very helpful appendix that lists ingredient equivalents such as 8oz dry pasta noodles equals 4 cups of cooked, 15 graham squares equals a cup of crumbs, or 1 cup of dried pinto beans equals 2 1/4 cups of cooked. The appendix also lists substitutes for both ingredients and volume, high altitude baking adjustments, boiling points, temperature and metric conversions, oil smoke points and food label terms as well as consumer information sources.

If I'm looking for extremely in depth information on an ingredient or foodstuff, I may open up Larousse Gastronomic. But if I need the quick down and dirty on a cooking term or a conversion of some sort, which is more often than not the case, I grab this book.

                          5 out of 5 stars Food Companion.......2007-07-09

I think this is an essential for all kitchens. Often, a recipe book will use a term that may be unfamiliar or use ingredients that are regionally unavailable. This book gives clear definitions, offers substitute suggestions and is generally the best resource to have in a "cooking" kitchen. I HIGHLY recommend it. I purchase it as part of a shower gift for all brides.

3 out of 5 stars Love FoodLovers Companion.......2007-07-04

I am a veteran foodservice employee of over 30 years. I purchased the Larouse Encyclopedia Gastronomique in the past but found it to be incomplete and a bit dated. The Foodlovers Companion fills in all the gaps and is very up-to-date. I moved from the casual dining field to fine dining and found many new ingredients and techniques with which I was unfamiliar. I bought the Companion sight unseen on the recommendation of a young chef. I am thoroughly pleased and would recommend this book to all who love the details of the food life.

                          Book Description

The Finger Lakes area of upstate New York is America's largest wine region outside of California. The steep, rocky hillsides rising up from deep, glacier-sculpted lakes provide protection from weather extremes, allowing area wineries to produce up to 85 million bottles of wine each year. In GREETINGS FROM THE FINGER LAKES, local restaurateur Michael Turback profiles the best wineries, restaurants, farms, and markets surrounding the five largest lakes, and includes interviews with the proprietors, tasting notes, and even a few treasured local recipes. Featuring contact information for each location as well as photographs of the region's picturesque landscapes, GREETINGS FROM THE FINGER LAKES is the food and wine lover's companion to this up-and-coming culinary hot spot.

3 out of 5 stars Travel guide lite.......2006-03-24

I live in the Central New York region just east of the Finger Lakes. I work with people who live in the region and I road trip quite a bit in the area when the weather warms up, so I have a "mile-wide and an inch deep" knowledge of the area.

I consider this book a "lite" travel guide because it doesn't cover much of what's in the area, but it covers what it does in great depth. It focuses on what the cover says, and nothing more. It doesn't cover many eateries outside of the population centers, and skips a lot of the "hole in the wall" restaurants, diners, and stands that offer great food but are a bit off the beaten path.

If you want to focus on wineries and want some in depth knowledge about thoose wineries this is the book. Beyond that you will need to look elsewhere for information.

This book was very useful to have on vacation -- his restaurant reviews were a big help in terms of types of cuisine available and the winery reviews were very specific about what types of wines they produce and what he liked when he went tasting. It was also nice to know how formal restaurants were before you went.
