I have read many of Nora Roberts Books and this is my favorite trilogy. I've read the trilogy twice and also listened to an audio version. I love the way she describes things and every time it is new. Wonderful!

Book Description

From New York Times bestselling author and "master of the airborne thriller" John J. Nance comes Fire Flight, a ripped-from-the-headlines adventure about the extraordinary pilots who risk their lives flying substandard airplanes in a little-known and lopsided war against our nation's wildfires.

Veteran pilot Clark Maxwell thought his fire bombing days were well behind him. But when Jerry Stein, Maxwell's friend and airtanker fleet-owner, calls at the height of the fire season to beg him to reenter the war, he doesn't hesitate. A pair of ferocious forest fires is raging out of control, threatening to destroy Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks and incinerate thousands of area homes. As the wildfires spread, whipped by massive winds, and the federal forces arrayed against the fires reach their limits, anxiety grows in the local population. A paranoia plagues the fire bombers and smoke jumpers as well, after a mysterious string of violent airborne accidents among the airtanker fleet claims the lives of some of the most fearless and experienced veterans.

Maxwell has long argued that the airtankers -- old aircraft used by pilots to bomb the fires with fire retardant slurry -- are faulty museum pieces that should have been grounded years ago. Now some of the fleet seem to be falling apart in midair. In the middle of the area's worst wildfire season in history, Maxwell is convinced that a sinister cover-up is behind the rash of horrific air disasters. Were the planes' inspection papers forged? Is someone capitalizing on these crashes? As he races to unravel a very real mystery and prevent a natural disaster of massive proportions, Maxwell's probe reaches the upper levels of the very government agencies charged with mount-ing the aerial fire fighting effort -- a move that for wholly unexpected reasons just may cost him his life...and the life of Karen Jones, the married smoke jumper with whom he seems to have fallen in love.

In amazing detail, with the signature authenticity only a veteran pilot could provide, John J. Nance creates a hair-raising thriller that will leave readers breathless from cover to cover.

2 out of 5 stars Kind of dry (but not dry enough to start a fire).......2007-07-08

I didn't really like this book that much. Nance does show that he is an aviation expert, as he goes into a new realm that is outside the traditional aviation disaster genre, but I just felt like the whole plot dragged and was very predictable. In my opinion, Nance's earlier works were much better. If there was one book of his I would not get, there's a good chance it would be this one.

5 out of 5 stars A Nail Biting Thriller Combined with a Superb Mystery.......2006-10-28

Clark Maxwell came out of retirement to help fight the fires that are raging in the west because his ex-boss, somewhat sleazy, kind of cheap, Jerry Stein said he needed him. Clark and his new co-pilot are flying a DC6B watertanker when the tanker in front goes down with his friend Jeff Maze aboard. One of the wings came off in midair. Clark believes that the planes have had all of their required maintenance checks, because Stein is his friend and a pilot himself. He wouldn't send his crew out in planes that weren't fit.
But Clark can't help himself and he checks out a plane on the ground and sees that the maintenance had not been performed. He calls the FBI, but Stein's security chief overhears the call and calls the feds back, pretending he's Maxwell, and he says he was concerned over nothing, then he impersonates an FBI agent to find out just what it is Clark knows and Clark is about to fall into the trap.

Nance is a master when it comes to the airplane thriller and he's out done himself this time. His portrayal of wild fires, the destruction they cause, the lives they destroy will have ice shooting up your spine while you read about disaster after disaster as Clark and his comrades combat one of the worst fires in history in their aging planes that appear to be held together with only spit and chewing gum.

5 out of 5 stars Super Thriller, Super Story and a Mystery to Boot.......2006-01-02

I went out and bought this book because of the reviews below. Everyone just seemed to be singing FIRE FLIGHT'S praises. Every review so positive, and then there was the bit about all those fires in California in the news. Anyway, I figured I couldn't go wrong and I was I ever right. FIRE FIGHT is one super thriller. From the very beginning, when Jeff Maze is spotted in the Caymans, we know something is not right, then when his plane crashes in the next chapter, it puts us on our guard through the rest of the book, on the edge of our seats, wondering what's going to happen next.

I especially liked the part where the rock star Jimmy Wolf uses his influence with the government to pull a water carrying helicopter away from a town that was threatened by the fire to save his expensive home. The chopper drizzles water on the house, but Jimmy gets on the phone, calls his influential pals, demands they unload it all. The pilot says no, because he knows that to do so would destroy the home. Jimmy is furious, threatens the pilot, the pilot dumps the agua and Jimmy's home is flattened under the deluge. Poetic justice, I liked that. Then Jimmy went on to become a hero. I liked that too.

There's lots of stuff going on in FIRE FLIGHT, but it's very easy to keep track of everybody, I never got lost and I didn't put the book down till I finished. Again this is a super thriller, a super book, a wonderful story and a mystery to boot.

5 out of 5 stars Sabotage or Neglect, Either Way Death is the Result.......2005-12-31

Pilot Clark Maxwell is horrified when Jeff Maze's flight goes down. They were flying separate planes, old DC6Bs that had been converted to water tankers to fight forest fires. Jeff had been piloting the plane Clark was supposed to fly. Then, all of a sudden, he's got problems of his own. One of his engines goes and it's all he and his co-pilot can do to baby the plane back to the field. Then another engine flames out. They barely make it back.
Clark wonders about the service the planes were supposed to be getting and about Trent Jones, the head mechanic, even as he finds himself falling for the mechanic's wife, Karen. Clark surreptitiously inspects some of the planes, finds that service that was supposed to be performed hadn't been done. He suspects the owner of the fleet, Jerry Stein, because Jerry had been know to play it pretty close to the vest. At first Clark thinks maybe Jerry had been fudging the maintenance to save a buck, then he suspects his boss may have been using the planes illegally and not writing down the hours, thus making the time between service a lot longer than legally allowable, but the real reason behind the mysterious crash and others to come will always be just beyond his grasp, in fact the truth may never be known.

This strong character driven story grabbed me from the first page and didn't let go until long after I'd finished. Nance successfully takes his readers into the heat and the heart of raging infernos, the air above them and the towns threatened by them. He draws you into the lives, loves, hopes and fears of the pilots, firefighters and smokejumpers. He is a master of intrigue and he spins a mystery I guarantee that you won't figure out until the very end.

5 out of 5 stars Fire Fighters by Air, Mystery Most Exquisite.......2005-11-24

Misty Ryan is on vacation in the Cayman Islands when she spots boyfriend Jeff Maze. Impossible, Jeff is supposed to be back in the States. There was no reason for him to be in the Caribbean. Misty gives chase, Jeff alludes her. She goes to the airport, sees an aging DC6B just like the one Jeff flies when he's dumping water on raging fires. Again, impossible, it was against federal law for those tankers to be used outside of the States. She takes another look at the plane across the field, feels a momentary flush of relief as the tail isn't painted the red of the firefighting fleet. But her relief is short lived, because in the next instant she sees Jeff walking out toward the plane with another woman.

Back in the U.S. months later Jeff goes down in one of Jerry Stein's firefighting tankers while battling a raging fire that threatens Yellowstone. One of the wings ripped off the plane and that shouldn't have happened if the planes had been maintained as they were supposed to be as required by law.

And thus begins a different kind of thriller for John Nance. Yes, there may be just a few international overtones in the conclusion, but this is mostly a story about a group of pilots who fly the water tankers and the smoke jumpers who parachute into the middle of a fire to fight it at its heart. There is love, intrigue, death and even a little comedy. And there a mystery that'll have you guessing and re-guessing while you burn the midnight oil as you try and figure out whodunit in this super five star book.

5 out of 5 stars a magic world.......2003-01-31

Gore Vidal once said the novelist's job is to create a world.

Thomson certainly does that here. His 1890s Baja California is a microcosm of race and class and climate and culture. It is a love story, but like all good love stories it puts you there and makes you feel how love is: like hypnosis, like drugs.

As always, Thomson's prose is iridescent. Things jump into life in his prose. Also as always, he treats the dark and harsh things of life with loving detail and great humor.

5 out of 5 stars Sheer Brilliance.......2001-05-12

My initial thoughts on this novel were not of the immediate love of his other books, but as a fan of Rupert Thomson, I couldn't bear to leave it. And I'm awefully glad I didn't. This book sets emotion and senses running, it truely encapsulates the sensation of early Mexico and the lives that were a part of it. This is certainly one of Thomson's best, masterfully written and extraordinarily researched novel. The book follows the lives of two quite different young people who find themselves in Santa Sofia at the same time. It is a delightful yet gruesome tale of the events surround the town and these two lives. It's a tale of falling in and out of love and the confusion of lives lived in a small town of different races and classes. This is truely a brilliant piece of art work...

5 out of 5 stars Another great novel by Thomson.......2000-12-05

I guess I'm always expecting disappointment when I read a book I love and then go find another by the same author. "Dreams of Leaving" was an amazingly good read, but I'd never heard of this guy otherwise, got that one remaindered in fact, so it must have been a flash in the pan, I thought. Not so, I'm happy to say! Maybe he's better known in Britain but I can't imagine why they're not crying his name from the bell towers here. Great stuff, really solid, "literature" instead of fiction. This is a beautiful, sleepy-sad story of human near-misses: a marriage that doesn't quite gel, a mix of cultures that fractures under stress, failures in understanding based in both sex and class, a son pondering the meaning of his father's failures without knowing if there really is a moral to the story of his life. The strength of the novel lies not only in the poignancy in which these misses and their consequences are recorded, but in the sustained hope that lives beside the despair: the Mexican baker who finally masters the art of making baguettes on the day of the riots, etc. Highly recommended!

One day, as I was getting in my car, thats what we called cars back then, I fell out in an intersection and was run over by a crazed piece of Tofu who was screaming, How yah doin? How yah Doin? He had a knife so I bought a paper from the boy on the corner. HE said, Me Jar Jar Binks, so i Splatterd him on the pavement. Other than that it was a good book.

This book was amazing, due to I needing information about fire for a report. I would reccomed this book if you are needing information about fire and/or air.

5 out of 5 stars Daredevil gets outed.......2007-07-27

As the title implies, Matt Murdock is about to experience one of the worst days of his super hero career. In one of the crowning moments of Brian Michael Bendis' run on Daredevil, Daredevil's secret identity is outed by the press as the FBI and criminals alike gather around to make their move. Out is where Bendis really hits his stride on the title and takes Daredevil to heights that haven't been seen since Frank Miller's last runs on the title. His Hell's Kitchen is a gritty, dangerous, dark spot on an otherwise shiny Marvel-ized New York City, and his depiction of Matt Murdock/Daredevil is the most human the character has been in years. Later on, we see Murdock embroiled in a trial as he defends a low rent super hero who was at the wrong place at the wrong time; which plants seeds for further, bigger developments in Bendis' celebrated run on the title. Alex Maleev's artwork is spectacular as well, which has come to be expected if you've read Daredevil at any great length over the past few years. All in all, mainstream super hero comics rarely get any better than this.

4 out of 5 stars Worth reading for the first story.......2005-05-17

For the record, I've never read anything by Bendis that was as good as Alias, which was fantastic, all the way through. I read "Wake Up" first, and I was very impressed, although I wasn't sure that I was getting a clear idea of Bendis' Daredevil, or of Daredevil himself, for that matter, as I have never read a Daredevil book. I picked up Underboss, then, and I enjoyed it enough to want to pick up the next volume.

This trade contains two stories: "Out" and "Trial of the Century." "Out" is fantastic. The idea is daring as hell, and it's handled perfectly. The characters are all completely believable and compelling--particularly, Matt Murdock, Foggy and Ben Urich; the dialogue is fantastic, the story is engaging and Alex Maleev's artwork is perfect. It has the same gritty feel of Michael Gaydos' artwork, and it looks great; figures and facial expressions are all natural, too.

Then there's "Trial of the Century," which was fairly poor. The main problem with it is the artwork, which is ridiculously poor for all of Manuel Gutierrez's issues (parts one and two). It is distorted and ugly; the way that Murdock's hair sticks up alone shows that Gutierrez doesn't have a basic understanding of how gravity works--or how hair works. Murdock looks very much like an alien in some panels.

The third issue, illustrated by Terry Dodson, is much better. It's nowhere near Alex Maleev's artwork, or David Mack's, but it's nice and stylized, and it does have something going for it.

That said, the writing on this one was okay. It wasn't as good as "Out," I think, although I'm sure that the artwork had something to do with how little I enjoyed it, but it wasn't wonderful, either. One thing that I really enjoyed in Alias was the way that Bendis could makes ridiculous characters like Speedball, or Mattie Franklin (Spider-woman III) believable, or even idealized super-heroes like Captain America or Ant-Man (Scott Lang) feel like real, relatable characters.

That doesn't go over with the White Tiger, who seems like a stereotypical hero, most of the way through. The opposing lawyer and the judge both seem like charicatures; there's nothing really impressive here. Still, it's Bendis, and, really, the artwork is probably what hurts the story the most.

Still, four stars because "Out" is so good.

5 out of 5 stars Skip the Movie and Read This!.......2003-04-15

Just a quick glance at the myriad of Daredevil trade paperbacks out there will give some indication of how many permutations this character has gone through. Unfortunately few truly understand the intricacies of the character who can turn into a third-rate ninja in one writer's hands and a cut-rate Spider-man in another's.

Luckily Brian Michael Bendis "gets" Daredevil - much as Miller and Smith have before him. As others have said in their reviews before this one, this is certainly not a conventional superhero tale as it focuses more on Matt Murdock and less on his costumed alter-ego. What appearances there are from the spandex set are limited but very effective. And you have to give credit to ANY writer who can make Mr. Hyde interesting, if only for a few panels.

Two disapointments: 1) The conniving Mr. Silke, who basically sets Murdock up for much of the misery he experiences in these issues, essentially becomes a castrated character barely even appearing in these pages. Perhaps Bendis has something up his sleeve for Silke. I hope so, as this story really wastes his potential.
        2) The final third or so of the book is taken up with a White Tiger storyline that is moderately good, but certaily nothing like the Bendis/Maleev stories that precede it.

Bottom Line: The Hollywood screenwriters could learn a LOT from Bendis and Maleev. This is a worthwhile read!

        5 out of 5 stars TODAY'S BEST MAINSTREAM COMIC.......2003-03-28

Be warned: This collection may cover Daredevil #32-40, but Daredevil hardly appears at all. There's only a brief appearance by a super-villian, and that's by the fourth-string Mr. Hyde. There are cameos galore, but of the appearances by Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Elektra, Jessica Jones and the White Tiger, only Spider-man does any real "super-heroing". The story doesn't advance or conclude with a big battle royale and a resolve where our hero saves the day and the world is put right, but with...well, find that out for yourself.

This is the best Daredevil storyline since Born Again.

Read Underboss before this to get the full story. In breif: Daredevil's secret identity has been outed by a tabloid newspaper (whose source is also an unconventional surprise). The repercussions are real and, no, there won't be a resolve with both Matt Murdock and someone else disguised as Daredevil appearring in the same place at the same time.

Bendis' strength as a writer of dialogue and creating memorable, vital characters is at its' peak here. Matt Murdock creates his own problems and ruins good opportunities because of his own flaws, not some super-baddie vowing revenge. Maleev's artwork is dark, gritty, moody and somber: an ideal match for Daredevil (and the colors by Matt Hollingworth and even the lettering by Richard Starkings are also well-suited and noteworthy).

Bendis and Maleev as a creative team for daredevil is so effective and evocative because they were both clearly influenced by Frank Miller. However, they are are not just aping Miller, they're embellishing. Their vision for Daredevil will forever change the character and in time may be remembered as just as important as Millers'.

The only drawback is the artwork in the last White Tiger story. It's okay, and it's a good story but without Maleev, it's just not the same, and it would have been really interesting to see what Maleev would have done with the story-line.

Pick this up. It's not just the best mainstream comic today, it may be the best thing in the entire field.

5 out of 5 stars Character Driven, Intense Super Hero Tale.......2003-03-11

Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, faces the worst nightmare for masked adventurer when the front page of the tabloids proclaim to the world that he is Daredevil. His life is upended, the media is camped outside his aprtment and hounding his every mood, and Foggy tells Matt that maybe he should quit. This story plumbs the depth of the character, Matt not Daredevil, and what compels Matt to put on the costume. Very few baddies in this volume, it's all about Matt and Foggy, which isn't a bad thing. Guest appearances include Luke Cage, Jessica Jones (ALIAS), the Black Widow, and Spiderman.

The pencils by alex maleev are incredible. His work constantly improves with each issue of Daredevil he draws. Buy this book. Bendis' best Daredevil story so far.

If this is your first Daredevil book, I suggest picking up "Underboss" before you read this book.

The story begins with a parade in honor of the sultan's birthday where his daughters, the princesses, give him gifts. Wealthy princes arrive on the scene to persuade the Sultan to let them marry his daughters. Because of the princesses' resistance, the Sultan decides, with the advice of the Grand Vizier, that the princesses should go on a journey and contemplate their choices.

Aladdin and his mother, meanwhile, are living in poverty, although Aladdin desperately wishes to become rich. An Evil Magician appears and tells Aladdin of a cave of treasures where the young peasant man finds a magic lamp which will grant him three wishes. Aladdin also discovers that Ali Baba and his band of thieves are plotting to capture the princesses on their journey and offer them for ransom. In an effort to help the princesses, Aladdin wastes his three wishes. He does, however, return to the cave to find a magic ring which offers him unlimited wishes as long as they are for good purposes.

When the Sultan discovers his daughters have been captured, he vows to defeat the power-hungry Evil Magician and Ali Baba in a battle to end all battles. With the help of Aladdin and the Magic Ring, Ali Baba and his thieves are defeated and the Evil Magician is stripped of his magic powers and banished from the kingdom. Aladdin and his mother, with the help of the Genie of the Ring, become rich and live happily ever after.

                            Book Description

Fixing America: Breaking the Stranglehold of Corporate Rule, Big Media and the Religious Right is a straightforward, well-researched and explosive analysis of what's ailing the United States of America in 2004. Award-winning journalist and investigative reporter John Buchanan provides a clear, honest diagnosis of the country's chronic disease. He relates symptoms including the rise of the corporate state, the insidious role of the professional lobbyist as an instrument of subversion, war profiteering as the career of choice for former government officials and Washington insiders, the emergence of religion and theocracy as a right-wing political tactic, the failure of the mass media, the disappearance of civics, and the sinister presence of an Orwellian neo-fascism that threatens freedom and democracy as envisioned by America's Founding Fathers.

Buchanan then offers simple solutions that common citizens can support in common cause, based on common sense. Drawing on historic voices that include Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Thomas Paine, James Madison, Mahatma Gandhi, Mark Twain and Robert F. Kennedy, the author articulates a fresh vision for 21st century America that deserves the attention of every patriot left in these trying times.

Fixing America also features an inspiring Foreword by John McConnell, the 89-year-old founder of Earth Day in 1970 and The Minute for Peace in 1963.
