Book Description
Finally, the story of the Great War of the Ban is told! Two young wanderers are given a small copper coin by a dying human, who tells them to deliver it "East to Agron" and "warn all," but dies before explaining who they are to deliver it to, and what they are to warn them of. Making matters worse, in order to deliver the message, the pair must pass through a war in the East between the Black Mage Modru and the alliance of free folk opposing him, and end up being drawn into events which threaten to overwhelm them, save for the coin which has much more significance than anyone could imagine!

Adon! Who let all these Tolkien-istas in here?.......2006-05-03
McKiernan freely admits being inspired to write by Tolkien, but dilettante reviewers who think they're being cute, like to bash him for having similarities to middle earth. I'm sure there are those who bash Tolkien for being derivative of Beowulf or whatever, just to try to get a rise out of someone.
Anyway, I do agree with other reviewers who say that this two book duology is a long linear journey following the two warrow heroes, Tip & Beau thru an unlikely series of adventures. They of course, are in the center of every important event, suffering, near death, making many friends, and killing many, many enemies. At least this aspect makes warrows quite different from hobbits, they're definitely deadly... very deadly. I find it interesting that in Mithgar, weapons tech never seemed to catch on. good for them.
I don't think I'd recommend it as a first read of the Mithgar adventures. Probably The Iron Tower trilogy ranks higher on my list. I also appreciate McKiernan's efforts to please his fans by writing many books about Mithgar. An interesting place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. Too much fighting!
incredible!!!!!!.......2006-04-11
I love all of the mithgar books!!! They are filled with magic, action, freindship, and even romance!!! This book{and into the fire} are my favorite Mithgar novels...Wait! I changed my mind!!!they are some of my favorite fantasy novels ever written!!!
The Fantasy Equivalent of Comfort Food.......2005-07-10
Reading a Dennis L. McKiernan novel is like sitting down to a meal of your favorite comfort food (fried chicken and mashed potatoes for me!). You always know what to expect and although you've consumed it countless times before, you still savor every bite. Sure, McKiernan doesn't break any new ground here, but he tells his stories well, filling them with the heroic good guys, evil bad guys, and an epic quest that makes this an enjoyable escape into familiar territory.
Into the Forge is Book One of the Hel's Crucible Duology. While this two-part series is supposed to tell the story of the War of the Ban, we don't see much of the actual war until late in this book. Instead, we get the tale of two Warrows (think Hobbits or mini-Elves) and their mission to deliver a token to a king halfway across the world. What this serves to do is narrow the focus of the tale McKiernan is telling. This story is almost single-threaded, meaning that the narrative never departs from the two Warrows' point of view. And since they're together for most of the book, you end up with a single, simple plotline to follow. (If only some other authors had this kind of focus.)
I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a light, quick fantasy read. Whether you've read any of McKiernan's Mithgar tales or not, you should be able to jump right into this one. If you're looking for something totally original or with a more complex tangle of plot lines, you probably want to give this one a pass.
Not very good.......2004-11-29
This is the story of two hobbits, I mean warrows, who set off on a journey to deliver a ring, I mean coin, that may help save the world from the evil mage Sauron, I mean Modru. Along the way they are aided by elves, dwarves, and sorcerers, and threatened by various magical monsters, not to mention clumsy prose.
McKiernan has an ugly habit of switching between a sort of bastardized faux-Middle English and normal modern English, as well as stealing all his plot ideas from Tolkien. The charcters are pretty good and their adventures at times exciting, but there just isn't enough here to recommend.
The journey of two twits and a coin.......2004-09-26
Don't expect Dennis McKiernan's earthshattering War of the Ban to be half as epic as it sounds. Instead, the first book of the Hel's Crucible duology, "Into the Forge," focuses on people as far away from the actual war as possible. Paper thin, poorly characterized, this is a mind-numbingly slow journey with a pair of little twits.
The book opens in a small village (mostly populated by Men), where the Warrow Tipperton Thistledown is woken by weird noises in the middle of the night. It turns out to be a Man, fighting Rucks and who ends up being killed by them. Before he dies, he gives Tip a little coin on a thong and tells him to go east, give the coin to "Agron," and "warn all."
So, for reasons not entirely clear to them, Tip and Warrow healer Beau Darby set out through the Drearwood. They have to get to this guy Agron and give him the little coin. They hang around with Elves for a very long time before actually getting moving; in the meantime, the sinister Sauron-clone Modru is trying to take Mithgar over...
It's not much of a plot description, because there isn't much of a plot -- this duology might have worked better as a single work. It opens strongly, with some action and suspense, but as soon as Tip and Beau meet up with the Elves, the action stops dead. Apparently the weather is so rotten that they can't keep travelling, so they're forced to hang around and talk for hours with the interchangeable Elf lords. (Every Elf is a lord or a lady -- is any Elf NOT of the nobility?)
The only sense of urgency that McKiernan can summon up is the need to finish the book. Readers are told how horrible it would be if Modru conquered the world -- then are treated to pages of the Warrows and Elves ambling around, waiting for the weather to improve. The dialogue is absurd -- what half-asleep person thinks "distant metal striking metal"? What's with all the medieval English? And how many times can Beau say "oh my" before someone strangles him?
McKiernan's writing is not much better, full of odd old words like "siss" and "whelm." It's trite, flowery and overblown. And McKiernan throws in some obligatory romance for half the characters, usually involving lots of googly eyes, soulmates, and "making sweet, gentle love" several times. Yick. There's even an Elf pervert, who keeps talking about seeing Tip naked.
Tip is annoying and immature; it's hard to imagine entrusting a shopping list to this little idiot, let alone a fate-of-the-world mission. Beau is a little more memorable, but he also responds to any crisis by saying, "Oh my." You can guess how annoying it gets. Phais and Loric are dull, generic Elves. Warrow girl Rynna is apparently supposed to be spunky, but ends up being irritating -- what's even stranger is that Tip finds true love with her, merely because she's the first girl of his own kind that he's met.
"Into the Forge" is one of the worst fantasy books in publication -- a slow, lumbering, brain-dead behemoth of a story. Only to be read by aspiring writers... as an example of what NOT to do.

The McDonaldization of Society--scares me.......2001-12-10
George Ritzer's book, The McDonaldization of Society was one of the most eye opening books I have ever read. Ritzer did a fabulous job of breaking down society into a simple example of fast food chains. Refering to our society as following the idea of fast food chains- predictable, calculable, efficient, and controlling, Ritzer not only described society today, but also used clear examples of how society will adapt and be effected by McDonaldization in the future.
I was so unaware of the effects of McDonaldization on society, not only are we becoming robots in a way, but also we are starting to move so quickly in everything we do that people are forgetting to enjoy life. I loved everything about this book, from the examples Ritzer used to the knowledge it brought forth to me.
The only downfall of the book was how synical I have become since reading it. The McDonaldization of Society informed me with so much knowledge it made me take a step back and analyze the things around me. All I have to say is I think we have a scary world ahead of us. I mean seriously who want to live in a robot society?....I certainly don't .
Overall The McDonaldization of Society is a book I would recommend to read, but be prepared of what you are about to embark upon.
Comedy, Political Theory, Social Theory Rolled Into One.......1999-10-26
Finally someone to critique this whole SUV-driving,fast-food gobbling, ATM, credit-card debting, Banana Republic we have created...
This book, for me, almost read like a comedy, especially when Ritzer describes the "iron cage of McDonaldization" - how devices that were designed to save Americans time and money - fast food windows, ATM machines - actually end up wasting more time and money. Intelligent theory underlies his arguments. I'm thinking many aspects of the Internet could be the same way...Best quote was from the teenager in Dale City, Va., who, when McDonald's came to their town, said: "Nothing this big has ever happened to Dale City."
Excellent thesis on McDonaldization's impact on society.......1999-06-17
Ritzer analyzes the way McDonaldized systems work to increase efficiency while lowering quality, how we accept bland homogeneity for the sake of convenience while stifling diversity. An outstanding book of sociology, written with uncommon grace and humor.
Excellent Insight into the Destructive American Machine.......1999-02-17
George Ritzer's book serves as a brilliant eye-opener into the workings of America's consumer society. It is obvious after reading his work that very few aspects of the American way of life are immune to the sickness of McDonaldization. The most astonishing aspect about this sickness is that the vast majority of those who are afflicted with it do not realize it. McDonaldization is distorted by it's proponents to appear as some sort of blessing from heaven. All such forms of manipulative propaganda are addressed in the various chapters of the book. Ritzer demonstrates genuine nobility by concluding his painfully realistic criticism with countermeasures to be taken to prevent the destruction of free thought that often happens when we live in mechanized society's like that of America. The reader below, from Colton, WA, apparently has been so heavily inflicted by McDonaldization that only the short term benefits are realized while the destructive, long term effects are beyond this person's short-sighted vision.
A book everyone should read.......1998-12-01
George Ritzer's book on McDonaldisation of society makes fantastic reading, while being loaded with sociological observations. It is absolutely impossible not to stop to rethink our modern attitudes towards the easy way of life, after having read it. It is essential that we realise the extent of manipulation we undergo in our everyday life. Moreover, Ritzer's book is especially valuable to the countries of the former Communist block, where whatever is American is considered pefrect and undergoes the process of idealisation. Perhaps Ritzer's observations will save some of the readers from the life in the cage, which is created by McDonald's and its offspring.

The Escape from Jungle Island, book #3 of the Commander Kellie and the Superkids Adventures is one of the best books I have ever read. My mom and I read it together. It keeps you in suspense throughout the entire story. There are some really funny parts and some really scary parts. You never know what to expect. Valerie goes on vacation to see her parents with her friend Rapper in the SuperCraft. On the way, the NME Frightcraft shot them down on Jungle Island. Valerie went for a walk while Rapper fixed the SuperCraft and got lost. She met a boy who had leprosy and was banished from his village. Their adventures while trying to get Valerie to Calypso Island were really awesome! It was really exciting how they were able to witness to the villagers and Valerie was able to overcome fear. I highly recommend this and all the Superkids adventures to children of all ages and their parents. It is a fun read-aloud book.

Vitamin D: New Perspectives in Drawing (Themes)
ASIN: 0816640696 |
Book Description
During the spiritual revival known as "Mother Ann's Work" or the "Era of Manifestations" (1837-1850), Shakers throughout the eastern United States experienced instances of intense communion, believing they served as instruments for heavenly spirits. Moved by a dream state or ecstatic possession, these (mostly) women and girls perceived images, songs, and texts that were recorded in writing, drawing, or a combination of both. A flourishing of art in a culture that had previously condemned all forms of image making, the works were considered spiritual bequests, not individual creations, and became known as "gift drawings" and "gift songs." Thousands of gift songs were written down during this time, becoming an integral part of the culture of the Shaker community. Only two hundred rarely seen drawings remain in existence.
Published to accompany the most significant exhibition of Shaker gift drawings and songs, Heavenly Visions includes close to one hundred color plates-including two newly discovered pieces-providing a comprehensive overview to these stunning works. Characterized by complex, precise graphic quality and elegantly written words linked to delicate imagery, these now treasured folk-art pieces range in size from two-inch squares to sheets several feet long. Unified and powerful, the interplay of words and images combine to creates a fascinating and beautiful genre of art.
Illuminating the images, essays by France Morin, Mary Ann Haagen, John T. Kirk, Ann Kirschner, and Sally M. Promey examine this body of art from a variety of perspectives, considering women's roles as spiritual mediums and the construction of gender within Shaker spirituality. This long-awaited volume serves to connect Shaker artistic and spiritual life and reveals their continuing relevance today. France Morin is curator of the exhibition Heavenly Visions: Shaker Gift Drawings and Gift Songs at The Drawing Center in New York City.
Customer Reviews:
Easy to understand, many never-before-seen pictures.......2003-11-27
"Heavenly Visions: Shaker Gift Drawings and Gift Songs" is a most impressive explanation and study of Shaker spirituality and the role of prophecy and gender within it.
Frances Moran manages in a simple and easily understood manner to see Shaker visions as a source of spiritual leadership and power for younger women within a community that was being increasingly hierarchical and bound up by the standards of "the world" (as Shakers referred to it). Frances explains easliy that gift drawings and gift songs gave Shaker women direct contact with the Spirit, which was characteristic of the earliest Believers but was lost during the early nineteenth century when Shakerism expanded. It is also show that the type of mediumship found in Shakerism is actually seen even today in native religions of the world.
The majority of "Heavenly Visions: Shaker Gift Drawings and Gift Songs", however, consists of some most beautiful pictures that show Shaker art of the period known as "Mother Ann's Work". The pictures are often much more beautiful and much more clearly laid out than those in less detailed studies of Shakerism and the book is made into an important purchase.
The actual pictures show there to be a great deal of structure and reason behind the gifts given to Shaker mediums during the 1840s and 1850s, as well as illustrating Shakerism's unique spiritual character. We find that there were many pictures of key Shaker leaders from the early period, and also a strong emphasis on the basic necessities of the natural world in the content of Shaker gift drawings. The written words on these drawings are beautifully written but I have not been able to read them.
A most important resource for the understanding of Shakerism.
