Book Description

The Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily is one of the most important stories of the Anthroposophic and Rosicrucian streams. It is a timeless, allegorical tale of initiation and had a profound impact on Rudolf Steiner and on the formulation of his teachings. He called the fairy tale a kind of "secret revelation," an "apocalypse." As the authors point out in The Time Is At Hand! Goethe's fairy tale begins with a specific image: a river separating two lands that contrast to each other, as do the sensory world and the spiritual world. The story ends with a bridge, created through sacrifice, that spans the river between the two lands.

Indeed, Rudolf Steiner was so deeply impressed by Goethe's fairy tale, that he used it as the model for his own first mystery drama, The Portal of Initiation. It is said that, prior to its first performance, he told friends, "I know how long and deeply you have loved Goethe's fairy tale, and today I am happy to tell you that you will see it performed on stage."

The twelve paintings in this book represent the soul experiences of the "Youth" in the fairy tale. These images are the fruit of an intense collaboration between the artist Hermann Linde and Rudolf Steiner, who commissioned the work. Steiner visited Linde's studio every day and gave him detailed indications for the treatment of the various motifs. The result is this beautifully illustrated, full-color book.

This is a fairy tale for meditation—and for building bridges of the soul and spirit.

5 out of 5 stars The Rosicrucian Fairy Tale.......2007-05-09

Steeped in symbolism both evident and obscure, haunting to the memory and both quaint and noble in its imagery is Goethe's miniature masterpiece of a fairy tale in the German romantic tradition. This is a tale that must be worked with, a superficial reading will find the tale tedious and pointless by the average reader. To those that appreciate the western esoteric tradition there is much food for thought here. In many ways I think of this as Goethe's "Magic Flute"- a Rosicrucian, possibly Masonic inspired fable for personal transformation. Marjorie Spock's (sister of the famous Dr. B. Spock of child rearing fame) work, "The Art of Goethean Conversation" is a set piece to a greater understanding of this fable. Enobled human speech, deeds and thoughts are keys to transforming society.

Though appreciated for many years by Anthroposophists and other students of Rudolf Steiner's thought, this work will never find broad appreciation. But if it serves to introduce one to the genius that was Goethe, then its esoteric intention has been fulfilled.

4 out of 5 stars About the book and essay.......2006-01-19

A group of people live in a world turned upside down. They realise that the efforts of one alone can do little to create a new society. But by waking up to each other at the right time, they bring about profound spiritual and social renewal.

Goethe originally told this magic tale in a group of travellers during the French Revolution. Today, this magic still sparkles in Thomas Carlyle's original translation. Michael Burton's play invites you to enjoy the tale afresh through his punchy dialogue.

Jay Ramsay writes that this ' ... inspiring script is a genuine contribution, combining the grace of the original fairy tale with a brilliant use of the modern idiom.' And when the Green Snake is asked by the Gold King, 'What is more quickening than light?' she replies, 'Conversation!' We come alive when meeting each other in real dialogue. Marjorie Spock's Art of Goethean Conversation shows how true conversation has transformative power.

This book was published specially for the 1998-99 European Tour of the Mask Studio's production of The Green Snake, a new play inspired by Goethe's fairy tale. It also meets readers' requests for the Spock essay and Carlyle translation in an accessible form.

5 out of 5 stars A fairy tale for adults rich in imagery and symbolism.......2005-02-06

In the finest tradition of tales of adults this story is filled with rich symbolish and imagery. It can be read and re-read and never exhaused.

              5 out of 5 stars A true collector's Item.......2006-03-16

It was just by dumb luck that I happened to make up my mind to seek new editions of my old, dog-eared paperbacks of Hodgson's work at the same time these became available. There's no need to review the work of the author--if you're looking for Hodgson's books these beautifully-bound new hardbacks are th ones to buy.

              5 out of 5 stars A Very Handsome Volume.......2006-02-15

I seldom review a book before reading it completely, but here I have to make an exception because I was bowled over by the appreance of this book as soon as I opened the Amazon box. This book is obviously a very loving treatment of Hodgson's works, the picture here doesn't do it justice. It is nicely bound and the cover is a deep blue textured faux leather, the drawings and lettering on front and spine, and the portrait of Hodgson on the back cover are deeply embossed in brilliant silver and quite stunning! WHY OH WHY someone had to slap a barcode sticker with strong adhesive on the back is beyond me, it took me 30 minutes of soap, window cleaner and knife to carefully remove it without marring the book. This book also contains wonderful line illustations at the beginning of several of the tales. Heads and tails above the quality of most books purchased nowadays.

The stories themselves (I've only read a few so far in the Sargasso Sea section) are quite enjoyable. I'm a fan of Lovecraft, Blackwood, Machen, et al and also love a good sea story, so these are right up my alley. Well-written, interesting, and atmospheric while still having enough action to move things along.

Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys stories in this genre and who wants a beautiful set of books on their shelves. This would look great in a nice glass-doored bookcase. I'm looking forward to buying the whole set.

              5 out of 5 stars The Master.......2005-05-12

If you haven't ...you should. Hodgson is a master of his craft from the fog bound streets of London to the tropical heat of a becalmed ship in the Pacific. This is a beautiful presentation which will eventually consist of five volumes, I am already impressed by my first two volumes....and eagerly await the rest.

5 out of 5 stars The wait is over - complete Hodgson is coming!.......2003-10-16

It's great to see that finally ALL the works of William Hope Hodgson are being published. It's about time that this great storyteller is about to get his masterpieces printed in style. I just bought the first volume and I must admit it's been done with care: the book cover is intricate + the nice pictures, layout, design, and editing work ensures that the volume can only be marvelled with content. As a fan, I for one have been waiting for this event to happen and will ensure that I will collect all these editions from Night Shade Books. So, if you're a fan then this is a must buy. And if you aren't acquainted with the author yet and are into stories of the tall and dark seas, then this is a great place to start on your sea journey to the worlds of William Hope Hodgson.

P.S. For those wondering which stories are all there, here's the complete list:

This is the best Young adult Star Trek novel ever. Ted Pedersen did an outstanding job writing it. I hated that they canceled the YA series because they were a fairly new series and they didn't give them a chance. If they would done more like this it would have been a sucessful series. (They shouldn't have changed the spine of the DS9 books colors for 9 10&11 either.)

Yakoub was once the legendary King of the Rom, the Gypsy race that has evolved from the days of caravans into lords of the spaceways--the only pilots capable of steering ships safely between the many worlds of the Galaxy. Weary and proud, Yakoub has relinquished his power and lives in exile on a distant, icy world. In his absence, chaos fills the vacuum of power. The fate of the entire Galactic Empire hangs in the balance. Yakoub must journey across the cosmos and fight to regain his throne. Only then can he fulfill his dream--to return his people to their ancestral home of Romany Star.

The Rom need the Yakoub of legend once more. Can the once-mighty King overcome time and tyranny and inspire his people in their darkest hour?

4 out of 5 stars Of Gypsy King and Gypsy Kingdom..........2007-02-25

I'm a pretty big fan of using a creative formula in presenting your character and his/her story. And I think that's one of the reasons I really enjoyed this novel. The first two-thirds is comprised of flashbacks interspersed with present action. It's a beautiful way to reveal a character as well as show how he/she has matured and changed through the years. I also found it neat that the main character was actually in his later years, because I feel like almost every sci-fi book I open has a young dashing hero or heroine (not all, of course, but far too many).

Silverberg's pacing, characterization, and vision - as always - are amazing and complex, and he's woven quite an entrancing story here. I was hooked shortly after I opened it. This is quite a beautifully complex and thorough "what if", and I loved every minute of it.

So yeah, all you science fiction buffs out there, grab a copy and sit down to be enthralled. Silverberg weaves a beautiful web, and this is one gypsy spider you'll not want to miss.

5 out of 5 stars All Flame from Tip to Tip.......2005-09-14

Here Robert Silverberg utilizes a milieu that is surprisingly creative and effective for a mainstream sci-fi novel. The Gypsies (or Rom, their self-given name) are elevated from a persecuted minority in the present world, to the most influential leaders of a future in which humans have spread across the galaxy. They are not just nomads on Earth, but have wandered throughout the Milky Way in a quest to return to their original home in another solar system. Silverberg makes outstanding use of Gypsy folklore here, as well as their view of the world and their place in the human scheme of things. If Silverberg isn't a Gypsy himself, he sure has made himself familiar with their worldview. The book centers on the future King of the Rom, Yakoub, and his travails as he tries to get his widely scattered people back on track, and lead them to the promised land (planet). Yakoub might also have to use his influence and leadership to save all of humanity from the dark ages. This novel seems pretty understated and mellow on the surface. But Silverberg has created a very poignant and perceptive treatise on the power of mythology, ethnicity, leadership, and humanity. [~doomsdayer520~]

5 out of 5 stars An exquisite masterpiece.......2005-09-01

I've been delighted by this unusual book of the great Robert Silverberg. A persecuted minority, the Gypsies, is used in this fictional tale, to show rhe folly and cruelty of those who despise human diversity. Here is a fantastic apologue on human potential, inventiveness and potential, both for greatness and utter stupidity, the latter represented in the three pretenders on the Imperial crown. These grave matters are narrated in a very witty, brillant style, where Silverberg's humorous persona is at its best. Yakoub is a magnificent trickster, ironic, rckless, self-centered and caring for friends and his people at the same time: you'll love him, and his friends, Julien, Polarca, Damiano.
Other than that, you have a grand panorama of a Universe, planets unspeakably horrid as Trinigalee Chase and Alta Hannalanna, and beautiful planets like Xinamu and sthange Mulianu. an influence of Douglas Adam's Hitch-hiker's Guide cannot be excluded. A magnificent work, Silverberg at his best!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Tour de Force from Sci-Fi's Brightest Star.......2005-03-15

If any of Robert Silverberg's many fabulously colorful, brilliantly conceived, and intoxicating addictive novels would make a fabulous movie, Star of the Gypsies would. In fact, if I knew how to write screenplays, I'd write one for this gem. The story? Where to begin? Complex, rich, juicy--becoming raucous good fun. I fell in love with the Gypsy King and the huge universe of the future in which he lives. Love, love, LOVE this book. Think I'll read it again!

                    4 out of 5 stars Really good..........2000-05-09

Silverberg is very inconsistent and I can't say I like any of his latest books, such as "Starborne" or "A Hot Sky at Midnight". Luckily, "Star of Gypsies" appears to be one of his earlier works, and it is quite good. Not quite like "Lord Valentine's Castle", but still great. Adventures of Yakoub, the King of Gypsies, and the worlds they take him to are varied and wondrous, and Yakoub himself is quite a character. This is definitely a book worth reading!

                            Book Description

Esu is the dynamic element of everything that exists in the universe. He introduces disorder and quarrel in the human and divine world to maintain cosmic and social order. He keeps this continuity of order by submitting everything to movement and dependency. The universe is in a perpetual state of balance and unbalance ruled by dynamic and structural principles. He is the kinetic order behind all opposites in life, expansion and contraction, anger and joy, prosperity and poverty, love and hate, etc. He is a trouble-maker and a trickster, his nature is to put us in a state opposite to the one we are until we discern the real purpose of life. The main quality of Esu is to open and close the paths and establish harmony between the visible and invisible worlds. He represents the forces of these worlds that puts in motion the whole tradition of the Yorubas. He possesses a neutral energy that represents the individual Orisha of each animate and inanimate thing. Osanyin-Erinle Osanyin is a restless and proud Orisha with a vast repertoire of sorcery (Ashai) and magic (Ogun). He rules the whole plant kingdom together with a vast group of servants called elementals. His presence is associated with the preparation of medicines, magical potions, sorcery and talismanic magic. Osanyin has the whole plant pharmacopoeia at his disposal. Formerly this task was the sole responsibility of Erinle. When he received the authority (Ase or Ashe) from Olodumare, he gained at the same time the monopoly of all plants, and the secrets to use them.

Being the author of this book, I cannot say anything bad about it. It took almost 10 years to write it. I also assume that is currently out-of-print. It is nice to know that everybody is profiting from this book except me. Your comments for a better-improved version are greatly appreciated.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive guide to African Plants (herbs).......2002-02-05

This is the most authentic and comprehensive guide to west African plants/herbs available. This is one of those rare instances where sacred oral tradition is written for the benefit of humankind. Ferreira's lifetime of experiences using the plants to prepare medicines, magical potions, sorcery, and talismanic magic is evident in the book. He is an adept and the contents of the book reflects his mastery of this very specialized area of the Orisha tradition.
