Book Description

Hailed by The Boston Globe as "so poignant and beautifully written, so true and painful, that one can't read it without feeling the knife's cruel blade in the heart," The Car Thief was first published to enormous popularity, and sold over half a million copies. Alex Housman is a kid who at the age of sixteen has had fourteen cars, harbors many hurts, and seems to fade into his environment while raging inside. His father is an alcoholic, losing his grip on life even as he wants the best for his son. The Car Thief explores the love Alex and his father share, in a tremendously poignant story that is filled with unusual triumphs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is a truly great novel!.......2001-11-13

I read this novel in my high school lit. class and liked it, but it wasn't until I read it again just recently that I really came to appreciate this excellent piece of fiction. It is moving, and heartbreaking, and I couldn't put it down. I also feel a kind of connection to this book because it is set in my home town of Flint Michigan. If you like stories about teengae angst, and the classic anti-hero then this is the book for you.

I do however, have to disagree with another reviewer who said the appeal of this book is limited to men only. It appealed to me, and I felt a real empathy for the main character. Trust me, there are plenty of girls who go through these kinds of situations, and feelings.

4 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Novel.......2001-06-15

The only thing preventing me from rating "The Car Thief" with five stars is its limited appeal. In my opinion, this book should appeal to all men who have passed through (or are passing through) adolesence.

At first I felt the novel to be slow, and quite boring, but I realized that the more I read it seemed the author was doing something abstract to me, as the reader. The structure and pacing of the novel completely pulls you into a world of frustration and depression. More than most characters in literature, I found myself deeply identifying with the novel's main character, Alex Housman. His struggles depict the aimless melancholony one feels as a teenager. Having gone through the transition from child to adult, I found myself fully understanding (if not always agreeing with) Alex's actions.

Theodore Weesner should be commended for his portrayal of the father/son relationship, between Alex and his father, which is really the heart of the novel. Through deceptively simple actions and dialogue, Weesner brings to life a terribly complex relationship that, in the hands of another author, might be difficult to understand.

One reviewer said it best that the true meaning of this novel seeps up between the words. Weesner has placed something special into his work that is impossible to pinpoint, but communicates perfectly the intention of this story.

An excellent novel that might not speak to everyone, "The Car Thief" certainly has a lot to say to those willing to listen.

5 out of 5 stars MODERN CLASSIC.......2001-03-22

THE CAR THIEF is a book so poignant, so well written and articulate that you'd have to have a heart of stone not to feel the weight of it's sorrow.

I taught this book to all my Modern Lit classes and every student found it tremendously moving--and a great example of modern prose style. Ted Weesner is a fine writer, and I recommend his other titles as well.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible!.......2000-02-11

This is a crime of a book--not a single redeeming character in the whole lot, and that's saying something. I originally read this in high school and hated it, but went back to it to see if it was better with a little age. Answer: No. The plot still stinks, carried by characters you loathe and don't care about. Avoid at all costs...

The U.S.S. Merrimack was the finest battleship class spaceship in Earth's fleet, able to stand up against the best the Palatine Empire could throw at them, even able to attack and kill swarms of the seemingly unstoppable Hive. But nothing could have prepared the captain and crew of the Merrimack to face the Myriad-three colonized worlds in the midst of a globular cluster that the Hive had somehow overlooked.

Kirk, Spock, Bones and the gang are back, only they have new names and the intelligence of third-graders. Fortunately, there is always a scientist on hand to explain things to them in simple terms they can understand. Read along as the gang flits across the Universe making fast friends. Or just pour a bowl of sugar down your throat - the results are the same.

5 out of 5 stars Great punchy Sci-Fi.......2007-05-03

This is a great, fast paced sci-fi book that carries all the best elements of a great story: Great plot, great characterization, a fast-easy-stylish punchy prose or writing style that makes it delicious to chew on. There are also a couple surprise plot twists and turns that are like a knock out punch coming out of the dark. Very fun. Read this book if you like action-adventure sci-fi with intriguing plot! Great series. Cant wait for the 3rd book coming in 11/07

5 out of 5 stars Always liked this author.......2007-03-29

I've been a fan of her work since the 80's, and she's always been one of my favorite SF authors. I emailed her before I knew about this series coming out to let her know I really missed her work, and that was when I found out about this new series - she told me there was something new on the horizon that I ought to like if I liked her previous works. Since I hate waiting for each book in a series to come out, I now tend to wait till all are written before buying any, so I can read straight through. But I only lasted until this month, bought the first two. Figured I can wait for the last now since it won't be that long of a wait.

As usual, she goes above and beyond to immerse the reader in her universe. She doesn't bore you with trying to explain her technology as if to justify it - this *IS* sci fi after all, and I don't expect it to be forced to line up with current technology somehow. She creates a universe and makes you feel as if you're walking through it.

So often I find myself speed-reading parts of books that just drag out the descriptions too much, as if the author is trying to impress you with how many pages or words their book has when it goes to print. She doesn't write any filling fluff, so every page is something to linger over and absorb to its fullest.

Great series, finished this book today and am starting Wolf Star now, curious to see all the "history". And can't wait for the final book.

Needless to say I hope she puts out something else after this series is finished. I never tire of her work, and haven't read anything of hers yet that I didn't love.

3 out of 5 stars decent but last minute change negates much.......2007-02-10

This an engaging military sci fi book for much of the book. Meluch draws you into the plot line and characters thoroughly, especially Captain Farragut. However, there is a major plot swerve in the last 30 or so pages that basically negates much of what happens in the first 90% of the book. I would have rated 4 stars but this plot swerve really threw me off the book. Not sure I'll pick up the sequel for fear of the same kind of odd plot device at the end.

5 out of 5 stars Meluch is back without missing a step!.......2007-01-10

Since the other reviews blow the plot surprises for you, I won't bother repeating them. Ms. Meluch has finally returned after a too-long hiatus from science fiction, and her writing is as sharp as ever. I snapped this book up without question the moment I saw it on the shelf. There is nobody who can breathe life into characters the way she can; they lodge in your chest like a heartache and leave you thinking about the books long after you have finished them. Her stories move, they are imaginative, and they carry a thread of dry / wry humor through them that makes them a very human and thoroughly enjoyable read.

Other than the two Wind books, Meluch's previous stories have been stand-alone tales. I was expencting a more straightforward series of adventures for the Merrimack, and I confess the the surprise ending and subsequent changes in the personnel and their interactions was a wee bit of a bummer, because one hates to lose the relationships and plots that have evolved. However, staying put would have probably meant having to jettison some characters, and I like the crew of the Merrimack well enough to spend more time with them and see where the series goes.

If you're new to Meluch's writing, this is a good introduction to her style. If you're wondering which of her past books to try and get a copy of, I'd recommend starting with Chicago Red, and for a more fantastic, less military setting, Wind Dancers and Wind Child.

In the 33rd century, a dazzling empire is poised on the brink of annihilation… Born into the House of DeKoven Woolf, Lord Alexand is heir to a mighty industrial empire. But deep at the heart of the Concord brews dangerous unrest that threatens civilization with the specter of a third dark age.

The only hope for the future is the Society of the Phoenix—a powerful revolutionary group that has sworn to overthrow the Concord. By committing to the ultimate treason and joining forces with his own brother, martyred leader of the Phoenix, Alexand will forfeit more than just his birthright of power.

5 out of 5 stars As good as I remember.......2007-09-06

Meet Alexand and Rich, two sons of Lord Dekoven Woolf. Alexand is the heir, an intelligent, controlled young man undergoing his apprenticeship in politics. Rich is the gentle, brilliant younger brother who becomes fascinated -and deeply involved-with some sociological problems in their society. The brothers are very close, and they face many problems together. The bond between them brings about many of the events that occur throughout the trilogy.

Ignore the cover art. This is a great trilogy that spends time on characters, plot, sociology, politics and religion. The actual science in the science fiction is a bit lacking. So if that will bug you, you might have a problem with some of the issues in the series. Beyond that, the scope is wide, the plot is gripping, the characters are people you care about, and the writing is seamless.

I loved this story as a kid, and it still holds up well under adult scrutiny.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent future History.......2007-04-03

As a life long fan of SiFI and History I rate this book among my favorites along side the Foundation series. I found Vol. 1 at a used book sale and located the rest. Good Character development and realistic plot line based on past history. When I finished the series I was sorry there weren't more.

4 out of 5 stars Fun and suspenseful.......2006-12-20

I recommend this book, but only if you can get hold of all three in the series. This is the first, "Shadow of the Swan" is the second, "House of the Wolf" is the third and final of this "The Phoenix Legacy" series. I would say this is one novel in three installments. In my 1981 edition the second and third books both have maps, previous part synopsis (there are 6 parts altogether), and a cast of characters; the third book also has an extensive glossary. It unfortunately has some pretty lame cover art. You can easily find plot synopsis elsewhere. I want to say that this book nicely combines political intrigue with some hard science fiction and social idealism in the context of a far future feudal society. One plot element involves a pseudo-christian religion, but it is not thematic and there is no supernatural, fantastic, or faith-based action. There's enough action and plot twists to keep you turning the pages, but the real strength of the novel is in the characters and the drama. To my mind, there is nothing particularly profound or inventive about this series, but it is well written and entertaining.

                      4 out of 5 stars Great Series.......2005-09-27

The Legacy of the Phoenix series is a little soap opera-ish, but the characters grip you, and once you start on the first book you will get sucked in and want to read the next two. I recommend the series full heartedly, though I wouldn't start reading the first one unless I was sure I was able to procure the next two, as once you are hooked on the series you will want to blow through all three books back to back. Not five star, but the series is very close to it, and well worth the read.

                      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-04-07

Beautifully crafted. I was delighted to have the opportunity to replace my original extremely battered books. Among science fiction books that examine or explore socio-political structures, these books rank at the top of my list along with the Ender's Game trilogy by Orson Scott Card and "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" by Heinlein.

I was really disappointed with this cookbook. As much as I enjoy Paula Deen what I've cooked from this book turned out to be slop. The Sunday Morning Casserole was disgusting and bland. Maybe southern cooking just isn't my thing since I'm used to a different kind of palate of european style cooking. God knows I've tried to do the southern cooking thing, but I'll pass on this book and all the rest of her books. I still enjoy Paula's shows and adore her personality. She seems like a real sweetheart.

This cookbook is the best I've seen yet! It has tons of recipes for foods that Grandma made for us way back when. I am thrilled with the wide variety of recipes that it contains (and most are pretty simple to make).

Paula makes cooking easy and fun. Let's face it folks........this is NOT Cordon Bleu! The recipes are very good and makes use of plenty of 'helper' ingredients like canned cream style soups, cake mixes and self rising flour. Boy, does she ever use lots of butter!! It is a book I'll use often cuz it makes sense in our busy lives. The 'helper' ingredients were a surprise but so sensible. Plus, you get two of her books in one binding.

My wife is addicted to the Food Network, and her favorite hostess/chef is Paula Deen. I bought her this book for her birthday, and she proceeded to read it like a novel. She quickly picked out her favorite recipes and made a shopping list right away. She hasn't told me when I get a taste of the new recipes, but I can't wait.

5 out of 5 stars Just wonderful with a stick of butter!.......2007-07-05

I started watching Paula Deen and like so many folks just thought she was wonderful. Her Food Network Chefography was great and showed she had an idea and a need and went for it. I purchased these book for my cooking challenged cousin as I had tried a couple of her recipies and they were fabulous, just no way of messing up. I just recently tried her Red Velvet cake for a cousin and he was thrilled. What really made me look at her books was a friend who baked Paula's sour cream pound cake with caramel topping, this was wonderful!!! As a cake baker, myself, I really don't eat a lot of cake but I'm always willing to have a slice especially if I didn't have to bake it, THIS CAKE WAS WONDERFUL! I had a couple of slices!!! I went to library and got all of her books that I could find and now I am going to buy a couple of them for myself! I unfortunately did not like the format for her friends cookbook and would rather just watch Paula's Party then read it but the recipies are still great. I hope you'll enjoy her TV shows and books too! and keep a stick of butter handy.

Along with those decadent recipies, Paula is so funny and entertaining. Recipies are easy to follow....tasty and an eye pleaser. Enjoy using the book on a regular basis....favorite recipie....Shrimp stuffed wrapped with bacon....Delicious!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Paula H. Deen knows how to cook!.......2007-10-06

Paula Deen can cook, southern style! I have eaten at Lady & Sons in Savannah a couple of times, and enjoyed it.

These recipes, for the most part, are right up my alley! I am from the hill country of eastern Kentucky, and my Mom cooked a lot like this. My wife has used several of these recipes, and most always they are good. She is also a good "southern" cook, or "country" cook, as I call it.

If you like southern cooking--and butter and fried foods--you will like this recipe collection!

4 out of 5 stars Great Country Cooking.......2007-08-23

I love to read cookbooks and am always looking for ones with the kind of cooking I grew up eating--Paula Deen does a good job keeping her recipes simple and easy to follow plus she cooks with real butter and I fiqure anything is good with butter in it or on it. Some of her recipes are more heart friendly but if you are looking for a health food cookbook this isn't it

I guess butter and such doesn't bother me! I read the reviews of this cookbook and some complained that it wasn't good for people watching cholesterol, etc.

Here is a real cholesterol raiser that is soooo good...the cheeseburger meatloaf...it is to die for!!! Great recipe! I have also made squash casserole...really good!

                      These are good cookbooks!
