review of Emir's Education... by Jane Roberts.......2007-08-12
This is not only for children but for all ages, a different way of looking at things. Interesting and fun.
a world of wonderment for young and old alike.......2005-07-28
I often give this book as a gift to my adult friends. In a subtle way, it asks and answers questions which lead us to discover some of the universal truths. On the surface, however, it follows the adventures and trials of a small boy faced with the problem of solving overcrowding in his kingdom. Our little Emir actually discovers death as a solution to this problem and it pleases us to know there is such a thing. Death is intertwined with a reincarnationist view and may very well take the fear out of life ending for children who have not been exposed to this concept.
Emir's Education in the Proper Use of Magical Powers.......2002-06-28
Once upon a time, when the world was new, there was no death. There were no seasons, and everyone lived in one place, where the weather was perfect for most, although too hot for some, and too cold for others. A world without death, and without changes or places to grow in a friendly environment, soon ceases to be paradise and quickly becomes overcrowded and unfriendly.
And that's just what happened in the kingdom in which a small boy named Emir lived. Emir's Education in the Proper Use of Magical Powers, by Jane Roberts, is a charming story for all ages. The king, Emir's father, sent him on a trip to learn the names of all that he saw: plants, animals, lands, and seas. Being a child, and being used to getting his own way by simply stamping his feet and demanding what he wanted, Emir had much more than names to learn.
Emir journeys to the Land of the Gods first, then searches for the God of All Life. His personality keeps him from getting the answers he seeks. Unable to admit this, he tells a lie to his people, which makes him even more miserable. Luckily, he has a week in which to come up with the true answer. He sheds his pride and arrogance and seeks help from Conscience and Inspiration, from whom he learns that "all living things must have their own seasons of birth, growth, and returning to the earth."
Roberts is the author of the "Seth" books, spiritual classics published in the 1970s. Emir's Education in the Proper Use of Magical Powers, lovingly illustrated with pen-and-ink drawings, is a fairy tale for young and old alike, meant to remind us "to honor the cycles of life, the seasons, and world diversity."
Delightful, whimsical, thought-provoking, allegorical novel........2000-06-04
Emir is a young prince in a brand-new kingdom with some rather serious problems to solve. In his kingdom nothing grows old and always remains the same. At his father's request Emir (a rather self-important young prince) reluctantly undertakes two journeys into lands far beyond his experience. The first is a voyage to the Land of the Gods to invent the names of all the creatures and plants in this brand-new kingdom. Gaining knowledge and confidence in his own powers, Emir then goes in search of the God of All Life for help with the kingdom's growing population problem. Emir fails to obtain an answer from the God of All life and upon his return makes one up, and by doing so invents the first lie. Aided by Conscience and Inspiration, who show him the true answer he needs to help his people, Emir finally understand that every living thing should have its own season of birth, growth, and returning to the earth. Wonderfully enhanced with pen-and-ink illustrations, Emir's Education In The Proper Use Of Magical Powers is a delightful, whimsical, thought-provoking allegory and a treat for the mind and heart of all who read it.
Great book for children.......2000-05-31
My grandmother gave me this book for my sixth birthday, and I have been grateful ever since. This is the story of a young prince in the time just after the world has been created. Emir is a rather typical little boy (headstrong, selfish, etc.), but he learns some very valuable life lessons over the course of his journeys. While this is a children's book, it probably wouldn't hurt some adults to read it and take its lessons to heart themselves.
Book Description
Gauntlet Press announced last year that we are publishing all 92 of Rod Serling's scripts for The Twilight Zone, authorized by his wife Carol Serling. This is a 10 volume signed limited edition set entitled AS TIMELESS AS INFINITY: THE COMPLETE TWILIGHT ZONE SCRIPTS OF ROD SERLING. Except for The Twilight Zone Magazine and a few textbooks, this is the first time that Carol Serling has authorized (and will take an active role in) the publication of these scripts. The books are edited by Tony Albarella (co-author of THE TWILIGHT ZONE SCRIPTS OF EARL HAMNER and one of the Board of Directors for the Rod Serling Memorial Foundation).
AS TIMELESS AS INFINITY offers a unique and definitive look at Rod Serling's landmark Twilight Zone teleplays. The classic scripts are reprinted directly from Serling's personal collection, currently housed in the Special Collections Archive at Ithaca College. As editor, Albarella is working closely with Carol Serling to bring out material that has never before been made available to the public.
The scripts appear in their original format and are not typeset or altered in any way. In some cases this includes Rod's handwritten changes or notations. The Ithaca material also includes many revisions and earlier script drafts that differ, to varying degrees, from the final shooting scripts. We include these variant details where appropriate to document the creative process and track the evolution of the stories.
A commentary accompanies each rare script; in many cases this includes exclusive interview material with cast and crew and select comments from Serling himself. In addition, many of Rod's friends and colleagues pay tribute to the man and his work. Included are appreciations from contemporaries that worked with Serling as well as current talents who were inspired by him. Participating in Volume Two will be acclaimed author Robert McCammon, whose bestselling novels and short stories have earned scores of prestigious awards.
Preparation for this ambitious collection began in early 2002. Since then, over one hundred interviews have been conducted and the gathering of unique material is an on-going process. These books offer an in-depth, behind-the-scenes examination of Rod Serling and his signature creation, including examples of Serling's personal correspondence, vintage communications from CBS, rare production photos and much more.
Rod Serling was a true visionary - one of the pioneers of early television - and The Twilight Zone showcased some of his finest creations. AS TIMELESS AS INFINITY presents these ageless tales in a tribute worthy of Serling's legacy.
For only those ordering through Gauntlet Press, you receive a free chapbook entitled "I am the Night - Color Me Black." It contains variations of three scenes from this classic Twilight Zone tale. This presentation includes material exclusive to the chapbook.

Excellent Presentation.......2005-06-12
Ever since the release of "The Twilight Zone Companion" by Marc Scott Zicree twenty-two years ago, followers of THE TWILIGHT ZONE and Rod Serling have awaited the possible release of a second opinion, if you will. Zicree's comprehensive volume covers the series in depth, and everyone who calls themself a fan of THE TWILIGHT ZONE has a copy of this book. "The Companion" has been criticized for its brevity and lack of thorough coverage of many episodes, possibly due to publisher requests that the book serve as a casual episode guide.
Other attempts have been made in recent years to expand upon what "The Companion" did. Most recently and notoriously, the horridly-written and overpriced volume by Presnell and McGee (1998) and several other books on the series that have included episode guides with commentary. 2001 and 2002 marked the release of Richard Matheson's TWILIGHT ZONE SCRIPTS, and in 2003 Earl Hamner's eight scripts were released. The scripts of Charles Beaumont are also now in print (edited by Roger Anker, published by Gauntlet Press), the three TWILIGHT ZONE scripts written by Jerry Sohl (edited by Christopher Conlon, BearManor Media, c. 2004), as is a collection of eight scripts written by non-mainstream writers compiled by Andrew Ramage (c. 2005, BearManor Media). The eight ZONE scripts and stories written by George Clayton Johnson were released a number of years ago, in 1976.
Tony Albarella undertook the project of introducing all ninety-two scripts written by Rod Serling. Having gotten a warm-up on the art of commentary writing as editor of Hamner's TWILIGHT ZONE SCRIPTS (Cumberland House, 2003), Albarella's commentaries here are excellent. Although not cast as an episode guide, this looks to be the finest analysis of TWILIGHT ZONE episodes to date. After audiences have taken Zicree's words as 'the last words on TWILIGHT ZONE' for many years, Tony Albarella gives a particularly insightful look at each episode. He has taken the time to interview many actors who appeared in/starred in each segment.
Included in each volume are the original, unedited, typewritten copies of Serling's scripts, sometimes with handwritten annotation. Bonus items include a photo gallery with never-before seen production and publicity stills, and short but touching tributes to Serling and the series by actors. Also included are nice essay appreciations by well-known TV and sci-fi writers.
Volume 2 includes the scripts for "Walking Distance", "Judgment Night", "King Nine Will Not Return", "The Silence", "The Passersby", "The Trade-Ins", "Of Late I Think of Cliffordville", "A Short Drink from a Certain Fountain", and "I am the Night - Color Me Black". Albarella offers fine,
in-depth commentary on all, and they are generally right on the mark. They include fascinating anecdotes from over a dozen actors who appeared in these "classic" episodes.
Volume 2 also includes musical cue sheets for each episode, taken straight from CBS's archives, which list the composer and title of the stock music clips that underline certain pointed dialogue and give dimension to scenes. These have never seen the light of day until now; this is very welcome information to diehard Zone fans.
After years of being bottled up and not readily available, this series of script books may well be the finest, if not
the most distinguished, presentations of TV scripts
currently out there.

It Truly Is Timeless.......2007-09-08
Over the years, "The Twilight Zone" has grabbed us by the imaginations and refused to let go. It has given us things to think about, it has given us a good chuckle or two, and it's also given us nightmares.
But what made "The Twilight Zone" what it is today? Two things: Rod Serling and his stories. Rod Serling weaved incredible tales of value disguised with Martians, robots, and other fantastic things. Many believe him to be one of the best writers of the twentieth century, and this book is proof.
"As Timeless as Infinity: The Complete Twilight Zone Scripts of Rod Serling, Vol. One" is a magnificent book that contains exactly what the title says. Rod Serling's "Twilight Zone" scripts. "Yeah, that's really cool," you may think. But consider this. It's not re-typed or anything like "Richard Matheson's The Twilight Zone Scripts" or "The Twilight Zone Scripts of Earl Hamner" (also edited by Tony Albarella). Instead, this gigantic book contains Rod's actual type-written scripts, some even including hand-written notations from the creator of "The Twilight Zone" himself. Each script has been preserved quite nicely over the years (they're each a little over 40-years-old) and each has a wonderfully-written commentary by Tony Albarella, who dives into the technical aspects of the episode and even interviews some of the cast and crew. The book is even signed by Carol Serling, who has provided magazines and text books with Rod's scripts over the years. It also has some nice words from Richard Matheson and Rockne S. O'Bannon.
Scripts included in this volume are:
"The Time Element" - The hour-long unofficial pilot for the series.
"Where Is Everybody?" - The official pilot.
"Third From the Sun" - Based on a short story by Richard Matheson.
"The Purple Testament"
"The Big, Tall Wish"
"Eye of the Beholder"
"A Most Unusual Camera"
"A Most Unusual Camera" - Alternate version with different ending.
"The Mind and the Matter"
"The Dummy" - Based on an unpublished story by Leon Polk.
I thought it was the perfect "Twilight Zone" book, and even that is an understatement. We can all thank Mr. Albarella for doing the marvelous task of bringing Mr. Serling's unnaturally amazing scripts to the public. We can also thank Carol Serling for entrusting Mr. Albarella with such an unimaginable responsibility.
I found myself glued to this book. Rod's scripts are all incredible and each one is written so well. Rod truly was a master story-teller, there's no doubt about that. A truly fantastic book.
I give it 90 out of 10 stars.

Work Of A Master Craftsman.......2005-09-12
Rod Serling was so great as host of The Twilight Zone that it's easy to forget that he was also a writer of immense talent. His stories strike a reader with almost as much force as they do those who view them in televised form. Usually lacking the hamstringing luxury of excessive time in which to unfold a tale, Serling made use of economy and compacted irony and intelligence into his writing as virtually no other individual throughout literary history ever has before. This anthology is a fine presentation of some of this master's most extraordinary works.
Serling's Legacy in Good Hands.......2004-09-08
Rod Serling rode the leading edge of culture in his era. His work still resonates today, forty-five years after the debut of his masterwork. That masterwork has been on the air continuously ever since.
Serling's passionate commitment to equality and justice--and especially his willingness to fight The Powers of the Day for these beliefs--anticipated the social turmoil and progress of the Sixties. His use of fantasy to illustrate relevant points about the real world, transformed drama.
That's one hell of a legacy to document, but "As Timeless as Infinity: The Twilight Zone Scripts of Rod Serling" is up to the task. Its finest touch may be presenting the master's work in its original hand-typed and pencil-edited form. The script pages are as blurry and old-fashioned looking as the black-and-white episodes of Twilight Zone. And Serling's brilliance shines through this time-frozen fog as clearly on the page as it does on the screen.
The scripts are the core of this book, but they have elegant support: touching tributes, heart-felt appreciations, and sublime treats such as original clippings of ads and reviews and telegrams and contracts. And of course production photos. There is something for everyone in this volume, the first of a projected ten. These additional pages lend an unusual authenticity to the book; they frame the time that surrounded yet could not restrain The Twilight Zone.
Perhaps the finest aspect of this book that is external to Serling's work is the editor's commentary which follows each script. Tony Albarella is a lifelong fan and affianado of The Twilight Zone. He offers the same thoughtful analysis that he gave to Earl Hamner's Twilight Zone scripts in an earlier book, and so much more. You are treated to production notes, snippets from interviews, historical background, philosophical comment.
I found myself entranced by the tale of how the projectionst for "Where is Everybody?" got so wrapped up in the story that he left CBS President William Paley sitting in the dark between reel 2 and reel 3 of the audition screening. And my mouth dropped open at the real-life twist regarding Cliff Robertson's brush with death before production of "The Dummy."
You want the details? Buy the book. There's a treasure on every page.
Serling's Scripts Unleashed!.......2004-07-25

The list of scripts to appear in Volume One is as follows:
1) "The Time Element"
This hour-long was not an official Twilight Zone, but the widely accepted unofficial pilot. A Desilu Playhouse production from 1958 about time travel, it recieved surprisingly good ratings and that's what encouraged CBS to consider Serling's "sci-fi/fantasy" proposal. This show is seldom seen and has never been offered in print in any form.
2) "Where is Everybody?"
(the official pilot)
3) "Eye of the Beholder"
4) "Third from the Sun"
5) "The Purple Testament"
6) "The Big, Tall Wish"
7) "A Most Unusual Camera."
Two versions of this script are included with the book - one that is the "final shooting script" and one that is a complete, alternate version that varies from the other in several respects.
8) "The Mind and the Matter"
9) "The Dummy"
Volume One is 488 pages in length.
Book Description
Hearty boeuf Bourguignon served in deep bowls over a garlic-rubbed slice of baguette toast; decadently rich croque monsieur, eggy and oozing with cheese; gossamer crème brulee, its sweetness offset by a brittle burnt-sugar topping. Whether shared in a cozy French bistro or in your own home, the romance and enduring appeal of French country cooking is irrefutable. Here is the book that helps you bring that spirit, those evocative dishes, into your own home.
What Ina Garten is known for—on her Food Network show and in her three previous bestselling books—is adding a special twist to familiar dishes, while also streamlining the recipes so you spend less time in the kitchen but still emerge with perfection. And that’s exactly what she offers in Barefoot in Paris. Ina’s kir royale includes the unique addition of raspberry liqueur—a refreshing alternative to the traditional crème de cassis. Her vichyssoise is brightened with the addition of zucchini, and her chocolate mousse is deeply flavored with the essence of orange. All of these dishes are true to their Parisian roots, but all offer something special—and are thoroughly delicious, completely accessible, and the perfect fare for friends and family.
Barefoot in Paris is suffused with Ina’s love of the city, of the bustling outdoor markets and alluring little shops, of the bakeries and fromageries and charcuteries—of the wonderful celebration of food that you find on every street corner, in every neighborhood. So take a trip to Paris with the perfect guide—the Barefoot Contessa herself—in her most personal book yet.
Amazon.com
Ina Garten's much loved cookbooks, The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook, Barefoot Contessa Parties!, and Barefoot Contessa Family Style, offer relaxed yet stylish dishes that don't tax the cook. Her food works wonderfully for entertaining but shouldn't be limited to such times. Barefoot in Paris finds Garten (almost inevitably) in France, "translating" native dishes for the American home cook. The result is rewarding, and should get those reluctant to "cook French" to do just that. Covered are classics like Celery Root Rémoulade, Boeuf Bourguignon, and Chicken with Forty Cloves of Garlic, but also "newer" dishes like Zucchini Vichyssoise and Avocado and Grapefruit Salad. If Garten ranges wide from typical Parisian fare--in, for example, recipes like Rosemary Cashews, Tomato Rice Pilaf, and a distinctly American Brownie Tart--these nonetheless embody the French approach. Her sweets, including the likes of Peaches in Sauternes, Plum Cake "Tatin," and an exemplary Crème Brûlée, are particularly tempting. Included also are asides like "About French Table Settings," and "If You're Going," a resource guide, that, practicality apart, give readers a sense of French culinary life. With color photos, this is winning addition to the Barefoot collection. --Arthur Boehm

A Fan From Australia.......2007-08-20
I have had this book less than a month and have tried eight recipes already, all have been great. My family (husband and two boys aged 6 and 4 yrs old) have loved the meals I have made. I really like the informal style and layed-back recipes in this book. They are easy to follow and give great results. French food always seemed a bit fussy and formal until I read this book. The Chicken with Forty Cloves of Garlic and Creme Brulee recipes were winners!
Great Easy French Inspired Foods.......2007-07-28
I love this cookbook, but probably not for the right reasons. I love it because it again possess' Ina Garten's warmth, wit and passion. Most of all though, it is about Paris and French food. Simple, great food that you can prepare at home without having to attend a culinary institute. The problem is, I have used it very little, which means that alot of the recipes are not as suitable for families as her other titles.
At this stage in my life, I am still cooking nightly for a husband and three hungry children which means they are less inclined to try something new. So this is a cookbook for great easy french inspired meals but not necessarily for the average weeknight fare I have raved about in Barefoot Family Style and Barefoot at Home. At any rate, it is still a definite for your collection and bon appetite!
One of my favorites........2007-07-19
I have to admit, I am a bit Ina obsessed. This cookbook is great. There are lots of wonderful, easy and extremely delicious recipes in here. I have yet to try a recipe by Mrs. Garten that wasnt absolutely delicious. Paris here I come, well at least in my kitchen! :o) Wonderful cookbook!
Barefoot in Paris/Cookbook/Barefoot Contessa.......2007-07-09
This has become one of my favorite books. If someone wants to do a little simple - but outstanding french cooking, this is your book. It has all the essentials and is "easy" (compared to other "french" cookbooks). Ina writes cookbooks just as she speaks - very easy to understand. ANYONE can cook very, very good french food with this cookbook.
a Francophile opinion...................2007-06-22
There is not much that I can add to the reviews already written, but as an admitted Francophile, I wanted to put my 2 cents in. As all have stated, this is an incredible book, not just of French cooking, but a slight peek into the French way of living and thinking. Obviously, Ina loves Paris, and all that is French, and you get that feeling as she deviates from strictly recipes, and goes into the various nuances of French life.
Those nuances are scattered throughout the book and peppered (no pun intended) in the introductions to her recipes. The photography and food styling is excellent as usual, and as long as you aren't expecting a Jacque Pepin or Julia Child style of French cooking, then you will enjoy Ina's more simple, peasant-style fare. She talks about the visual preparation of the French table and all the ways that you can make your dining experience as simple, fresh, and carefree as the dishes. And for those who are fellow "Parisians", she guides you through the streets and markets of Paris and gives you a tour of sorts, of that magical city.
